CanadaI feel completely hopeless
Lyric,

It's heartbreaking reading what you have been going through and my thoughts and prayers are with you. My fiance went through brain surgury this past summer for a tumour removal so I somewhat understand the frustration of being tied to job and responsibilities when all that you want to do is be by their side. I wish that I had some advice for you ... it's aweful when you try to do things by the book and our governments will not compensate for humanitarian issues. If I think of anything I'll let you know .. (F)

CanadaCar Insurance tips?
Hey Caladan ... Looks like we've been in the same boat as of late smile.gif

I tried the other day to get my Ohio drivers license but I need my receipt notice for my aos paperwork to get it (I filed July 28th .. so you know where I am with that)

I was able to get a title on my 2004 Honda Civic that I brought with me and plates. My insurance company in Canada is State Farm and are insuring me for 60 days from point of entry. We have tried to get insurance with Allstate (which is my husbands insurance company) but they are state regulated and need the ohio d.l..

I was paying about $140 a month in Canada with State Farm (never an accident perfect driving record) and here with an out of state drivers license another insurance company was able to quote about $156.00 a month which I don't find too bad considering that it's a temporary fix. Our Canadian license is supposed to be good for anywhere from 6 months to a year (I've heard differing things)

I just got off of the phone and state farm will cover me for 120 per month here ... so it is possible to get insurance ... in Ohio at least .. hope that helps.

CanadaAdvance Parole RIDICULOUS for USC/Canadians
My son would love to be able to see his father but because we wait for advance parole (which I'm assuming will take even longer to get considering the backlog of applications) my little 9 year old will have to wait .. for why?? .. doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

CanadaAdvance Parole RIDICULOUS for USC/Canadians

As said in my ealier post, we didn't KNOW about the other options until after we were well into the K-1

Unfortunately .. I wasn't well aware of the difference either until I was well into the process. For my sons sake .. in hindsight .. the K3 probably would have been the better way to go ...

CanadaDr. Seidens Medical Review
I received my medical package today by courier ... I was curious about the contents (regarding the results of the tests) ... I called and spoke with Seiden's and asked if they would have informed me if there were any issues with the results... they told me that I wouldn't have received the package if I didn't have a clean bill of health. I just had to be 100% sure lol.

CanadaDr. Seidens Medical Review
Just thought that I'd post a review.

My son and my appointment was for between 7 and 8 am this morning. We left Hamilton at 6:20an with my GPS telling me that I would arrive at 7:25 am. Traffic was horrible and I was so stressed that we were going to be late but thankfully there was street parking a block away (metered of course) and I walked in their doors at 7:55am.

I waited at the front for a couple of minutes impatient that there wasn't a receptionist available (just a sign that said "Visa appointments - Line up here" and an empty seat where the receptionist should be sitting) so I stood in front of the hallway leading to the back until someone realized that I was waiting there (they were fixing themselves coffee).

My son and I were ushered to the back to an office where a nice lady took our information. The letter with our names on it from the Consulate, passports, immunizations the fee of $280.00 with an extra $20 for it to be couriered. I asked about maybe needing a copy and she advised that copies were $50 and that I should wait until I definitely needed a copy and at that time I could call their office and request it , and only one picture each (I was ticked as I had had three sets of us done each costing $68 on Monday night stressing about the size ect because the letter from Montreal said that I would require 3 at the medical and 2 at the interview).

Once she was done, around a corner I had my chest xray done (she had me put my hair up in an elastic and strip from the waiste up and put a disposable gown on) once that was done (no xray for my 8 year old) we were brought to another room like a Dr's office and a nurse came in and filled in some forms by asking health questions (chit chatting all the while .. she just came here from Nova Scotia .. very friendly). She took my Blood pressure and then sent the Dr in. Dr. Malcolm was his name .. very nice .. joked with my son about not getting any needles no matter how hard he tried to find one to give him :) ... He left the room and they took my son to weigh him, check his height and vision while I stripped down to only socks and once again put the disposable gown on. The Dr. came back in and checked my lungs while I breathed and had me lie on the table to check my abdomen .. very discrete about making sure I wasn't exposed to the best of his ability and then told me that the nurse would be in to give me a breast exam. The same nurse from Nova Scotia came in and did the exam chit chatting all the while :)

Once done and dressed I left the room and my son was right there having his eyes checked (20/20) and I was sent to the very next room to have blood drawn. Another nurse .. very nice chit chatted while taking my blood while another lady was in the hall with the sucker jar sugaring my son up hehehe and gave a sucker to me as well for being a good patient.

Once done I brought a couple of pieces of paper given up front and the sucker lady took them .. asked if the Dr. had requested any more info (I said no) then told me that everything would be ready on Friday for pick up (which of course are being couriered) and reminded me that when I go for my interview to make sure that I eat first because we would not be allowed to come and go. I thanked her and I left with the time being 8:45am

It was all extremely painless ... I give them two thumbs up!!!

CanadaSo now for something completely different.....
QUOTE (misa @ Sep 7 2007, 10:34 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Mmm... my biscuits were really good today. I used a different recipe that called for shortening instead of oil. It was a lot yummier. This is only the third time I've ever made biscuits. Never made them before I moved down here... it's a southern thing!

biscuits and gravy are a big thing here .. my husband makes it with just self rising flour and buttermilk (nothing else) coated in a little bit of the bacon and or sausage grease baked in a cast iron pan in the oven .. mmmm ... good

CanadaI know you've probably seen this question a million times....
I married the day after I arrived in the US and waited the two weeks to apply. No problems, only they completed the paperwork not using my married name as they told me that immigration may not recognize it and it would take much longer. I've received my SSN card and simply have to go to the office to have them change it into my married name.

CanadaLast day @ work
I had told my work from filing the paperwork what my plans were and how the process worked (they had been like family to me). There was huge training involved and I didn't want to leave them in a bad spot. They had no problems with all of the Montreal delays and would have kept me on as long as needed. I was really lucky in that department.

CanadaWhat happens if we're denied?
And don't listen to everyone else asking .. what will you do if you're denied?

I must have been asked that question numerous times and in my stress induced frenzy of trying to get my things packed and organized I would just stop and blankly stare at them and say .. that's not an option ... and then just go back to doing whatever it was that I was frenzily doing smile.gif
lynamonFemaleCanada2007-09-18 21:22:00
CanadaWait here or not here?
A lady that had started work at my office just before I left for the US had come from South Africa into the US and then came into Canada. She's applied for immigration to Canada and while her application is being processed she is legal to work in Canada (regardless to whether or not her application is rejected). You should look into this option while you wait for your interview in Montreal.

CanadaCanadian friends and Temp EAD stamp
So I spoke with the Supervisor and he told me that he knows that there are discrepancies with the system. There has been since the start of Homeland Security in 2002. They apparently have not provided the stamp since that time and he knows that some major points of entry are still providing that stamp. He took my name and number and is going to ask around and see if he can come up with anything for me (he was a duty gard in Toronto and went through the immigration process as his children were born in Canada .. it took him 2 1/2 years). I asked him who I should contact and he told me the 1800# on the CBP website would be a good place to start. He also told me that contacting congress would be a good idea. I asked him about the I-9 requirements and he gave me the phone number for ICE in my area .. I've called and left a message for the duty guard.

CanadaCanadian friends and Temp EAD stamp
I'm on a quest to find out how to obtain the temp EAD stamp when they don't give them at the boarder even though I only have another month left since I came across ... I'm trying to get some info for those of you that will be coming across on a K1 since frankly .. I have a little time on my hands these days smile.gif ... this is my post in working and travelling ...

So my husband and I were checking out at a Self serve check out in Home Depot today and I noticed that the uniformed man in front of us was with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and I told my husband that I should ask him a couple of questions ... so I did (apparently he was on the clock and more than happy to chat for a few minutes).

I told him that I was a K1 entry and USCIS advises that we are work authorized for the first 90 days upon entry but we can only satisfy the I-9 requirement with a Temp EAD stamp which was not provided at point of entry with the excuse of "we haven't given those out for quite awhile". The officer knew what the K1 was and about the temp EAD stamp and seemed surprised that the only guaranteed POE giving the stamp is JFK because as he said "I see them given all the time".

I told him that I had gone down to the immigration office in Cleveland with no help other than a number for the Cleveland airport which the immigration guy told me that I was no longer a K1 because I got married and am no longer able to get the stamp because of that fact .. that my status had changed.

This DHS officer was nice and polite .. gave me his card and wrote on the back the supervisors name with whom it is that I am to speak with tomorrow .. which I will be doing .. and when I do I will post more information
