I just called them to let them know of my move. I was receiving GST and child tax credit so I needed to put a stop on the funds as soon as possible. They will ask for the money back.

tee hee..

that one made me laugh..

"see a specialist immediately"

In Canada..

tee hee..

*sigh.. I'll shut up now..

Puts on her serious hat..

MandE... i'll add my voice to the others who said. it's probably nothing.. and I think i would bring additional documentation from my Dr.. as well.. I think that's a good idea..

Is there anyway they could Re-do the x-ray (the US approved Dr. that is?) for your peace of mind?

I am not from C-a-n-a-d-a so don't get the humor but still recommend that a specialist be seen quickly. Lung problems truly isn't very funny to me

The humour comes from the fact that we have socialized health care ... you have to see your doctor who refers you to a specialist and then it takes a while to get an appointment ... so immediately isn't really immediate at all smile.gif

CanadaTaking My Daughter to USA
I've sent you a PM regarding my situation ... I also wanted to add that the only thing that my ex can do at this point now that I'm here is request a change to the amount that he pays for child support. Considering that he has reasonable access on reasonable notice he can request to have the monthly amount lowered so that he can put those funds towards a hotel room to visit.

The I-94 is something that the boarder will staple into her passport when she crosses ... I believe that she'll also need to pay $6 american at the boarder for this. (you do not fill out anything for the I-94)

So, I stopped by the county clerk's office this morning on my way in to work to apply for the marriage license. Brought in my birth certificate and Kristy's birth certificate. The clerk had me take an oath that I would tell her the truth, copied the information from the birth certificates to a form, asked how old I was and how old Kristy was, and whether either of us had been married before, had me sign it and give my SSN, gave her twenty dollars, and I can pick up the license on Tuesday. So, anyone getting married in Michigan, the three "day" waiting period is business days, not calendar days.

Congrats!!! Just remember you have to tell the truth to the clerk, not necessarily the wife. laughing.gif

If your familiar with the Peace Bridge I would appreciate if you could tell me how to get there exactly as I can't really picture it in my mind. I come off of the thruway peace bridge exit ... do I stop at the duty free and walk over? or is there a separate entrance?

and I did think that is was odd his irritation ... seemed to slam the Canadian guards with his comment which I didn't appreciate much .. but quite frankly I just want to come and go as quickly and easily as possible (the extra 45 minutes at secondary adds to my already 4 1/2 hour drive time smile.gif)

Hi all ... my son and I have gone back to Hamilton twice now since we received our AP papers so I thought that I would share our experience.

The first time we crossed over the Peace bridge no problems getting into Canada (my car has Ohio license plates) they didn't even look at our passports. On the way back I wasn't quite sure how to explain our status and gave the guard our passports letting her know that we had our AP docs. She kept our passports and sent us to secondary where an officer only took one set of the AP papers and after 1/2 an hour we were free to go (the officer told us that each time we crossed back into the states that we would have to come into secondary to get a new I94 ... they did not charge us for it).

The second time the same thing happened going into Canada and on the way back the guard asked for both the passports and the AP papers and sent us to secondary. She told me that each time to just hand the guard the passports and the AP papers right away. After 45 minutes the guard handed our paperwork back to us and told us that the next time we cross into Canada to tell the guard to take the I94's out of our passports ... that they are supposed to do this and there have been problems with the Canadian boarder guards not following policy ???? (he seemed irritated).

Sooo ... you now have the precedure for traveling back and forth via car. At the Canadian boarder tell the guard to take your I94 out of your passport and on your way back into the States hand the guard your passport and AP papers and all will be grand smile.gif

Do they keep the I-94's?

We can't wait until we get my AP!

The Canadian boarder is to take your I-94's when you leave the States and the States boarder puts a new one in your passport when your return ... that way they can track when you are in and out of the country.

CanadaZyggy .. I need your advice before I loose my mind!!
Hi Zyggy ... I feel badly to ask you questions as I know you get bombarded at this time of year but my tax return is driving me right 'round the bend!!!!

I should have a fairly simple return ... I lived and worked in Canada up until July 26, 2007 and then I collected employment insurance until the end of the year. I always claimed my son as an eligible dependant and I also had daycare expenses while in Canada ... I cashed in a very small amount of RRSP's before I left and I was renting (so no sale of a house).

I'm not fully grasping the whole Section 217 thing ... I'm not sure if I put anything on line 256 of my return and when I called the Interstate office they told me that I would have to complete a T2203 for provincial taxes which they have not updated from 2006 and appears to be more for business than personal. The lady today told me that the tax withholding amount for Employment Insurance is 25% when I complete Schedule C Part 2 as there is nothing in regards to that Canadian Source Income in the Tax treaty between Canada and the US (quite frankly I got the impression that they really have no idea from the two people that I have spoke with and are just reading from cues). I'm so confused!!! What exactly is a Foreign tax credit? and does it apply to me? Arrrgggg!!!

I'm leery about taking my return to a tax person in fear that they will do it wrong ... is there tax software that you would recommend?

Your response would be deeply and sincerely appreciated smile.gif

Glad to hear Honda is pretty good then! ( I plan in importing my honda)
I still have a lein on it tho from Honda finance, has that caused anyone problems?

I have a 2004 Honda Civic that I brought down with me last July .. no problems getting the proper paperwork from Honda and it was free ... some manufacturers charge (there is a post somewhere here with the contact numbers). I was leasing it and had to pay it out before moving to the US. If you still have amounts outstanding for financing they may not let you take it with you across the boarder and if you still have warranty on it you will have to get special permission from the manufacturer for the warranty to continue once you're in the states.

All in all importing the car was a breeze .. in fact I had to ask the customs agent to give me the proper paperwork in order to register it and obtain a title. No duty paid as I owned it for longer than a year.

CanadaDual status for 2007 taxes
Okay .. I'm angry and confused .. taxes aren't supposed to be so brutal!!!!!

I moved at the end of July 2007 ... I was planning on filing using all my income on my Canadian return and therefore taking full tax credits as 90% of my world income was derived from Canadian Sources and then my husband and I were going to file married filing jointly with me as a resident ... Publication advises that if you are going to file married filing jointly you must include and are taxed on your world income otherwise you must file married filing separately ... does anyone else here know this???

Nonresident Spouse Treated as a Resident
If, at the end of your tax year, you are married and one spouse is a U.S. citizen or a resident alien and the other spouse is a nonresident alien, you can choose to treat the nonresident spouse as a U.S. resident. This includes situations in which one spouse is a nonresident alien at the beginning of the tax year, but a resident alien at the end of the year, and the other spouse is a nonresident alien at the end of the year.

If you make this choice, you and your spouse are treated for income tax purposes as residents for your entire tax year. Neither you nor your spouse can claim under any tax treaty not to be a U.S. resident. You are both taxed on worldwide income. You must file a joint income tax return for the year you make the choice, but you and your spouse can file joint or separate returns in later years.

Resident Aliens
Resident aliens are generally taxed in the same way as U.S. citizens. This means that their worldwide income is subject to U.S. tax and must be reported on their U.S. tax return. Income of resident aliens is subject to the graduated tax rates that apply to U.S. citizens. Resident aliens use the Tax Table or Tax Computation Worksheets located in the Form 1040 instructions, which apply to U.S. citizens.

And to top it all off my husband made me take our taxes to a tax professional whom we are paying THAT I'M TEACHING TO DO MY TAXES!!! cause she has never dealt with this before ... omg .. I'm gonna have a breakdown

CanadaQuestion about ex-spouse
Hi ... I have sole custody and I did not have a letter (I brought with my my court documents) .. my son was with me and they simply asked him if his dad knew and was okay with us leaving.

If I did get a letter it would have said something like I acknowledge and consent to our children (their names) moving to the location and said location being their permanent residence with their parent (name).

Hope that helps smile.gif

Sorry to be a pain-- sad.gif but I posted here a little while ago about my husband's ex-wife and getting a statement from her allowing the kids to go with him to the States. He has sole custody but with the interview in Montreal we want him to go prepared for anything- we can't afford a second trip back to Montreal. We are running two households and have five kids between us-- lol ! Anyway- I know we should get her statement notarized but what should the paperwork say?

Thanks so much and sorry for all the questions. I do appreciate everyone who has read and has answered my many questions. I don't know what I would do without this message board- everyone has been so helpful and supportive and for that I am so very grateful.... smile.gif

There is a bathroom on the floor that you will be hanging out on.
And yes you can go first thing in the morning, even though ur interview is at 0900. Pretty much first come, first served

I know they don't issue the Visa's the same day anymore. How long does it take to get mailed? My interview is on a Wednesday and I've booked the Uhaul for the following Saturday. If it doesn't come on the Friday, I need to cancel on the Friday so I'm not charged the cancellation fee. Thanks.

I had my interview on a Wednesday .. they assured me that it would be sent out by Friday ... don't believe what they say as they didn't physically send out the package until Tuesday and it arrived to me on Thursday. U-haul was great .. I had picked up the Truck and loaded it on Monday and picked up the car hauler on Tuesday .. because I did this the three day rental started on the Tuesday. It would have only cost me an extra $60 I think if I had needed it for an extra day.

Dear Fellow Montreal Consulate Visitors!

We're BAAACCCKKKKKKKK :D

Okay, here's our story......

Got up at 4 AM to drive from Ottawa to Montreal and beat the rush hour traffic (hah cussin hah!). NO time is non rush-hour time in Montreal. Okay, got there at 6:35 am, just in time to get crushed in the rush. By the way, coming into Montreal, every exit is on the RIGHT side EXCEPT the $*^#(%*3) one you NEED to take. So, took a nice tour of some local neighborhoods and woke up a few unsuspecting people with my cussing out the window of the Jeep. Got back on the right road. Cussed a few more folks and made it over to the left lane. Made it off THAT exit ramp. Shock absorbers replaced. (The roads?) in Montreal haven't been repaired since 1902, BUT, they are busy closing a lot of lanes making it LOOK like they are repairing them. Got Sharon to quit cowering in her seat by promising NOT to actually kill anyone, and shouted out MY window for a bit. (She says she'll still marry me even after seeing my worst, WOOHOO). Took the proper exits and turns, found the Consulate, and got a parking spot quickly in a paid parking area. Saw a bunch of folks sitting out in front of a building, and figured that was the embassy. Walked that way and found out it was a local university, turned arouond and saw the BIGGEST BLACK dild* of a building I've ever seen in my life. This was OBVIOUSLY the embassy. Woohoo. Walked up, looked in, and was suprised by the NICEST young guard who told us to come on in, take our clothes off and get comfy (not really, but Sharon thought he was cute). They were ALL extremely nice and polite, and helped us right on up to the 19 floor. We were there for about 15 seconds and they started telling people to go to window #9. At 7:30 no less! We had an 8:45 AM appointment, but they just started tellin us to go to this window and that window. Well, we waited a few minutes between windows, and then got called by the NICEST woman and she took all of our papers, sorted them for us, and was generally very cheerful for that time of morning. She mentioned we needed 2 copies of the K-156 which we had, and the letter just mentions ONE. Be aware of that! We then waited for the interview, which we were called to soon enough in room 7. Some young fellow all dressed up asked us a few questions, made us swear an oath (Not THAT kinda oath, which we've grown accustomed to swearing over the past year and a half). He looked everything over, then asked if Sharon had an RCMP report for ALL of her names. WOOPS! She had told the RCMP fella that she thought she better have that, but he told her that her current name would be just fine. NOPE! You HAVE to have a report for every name you've ever had, Maiden, previous married, etc. Our faces sunk. Well, he gave us some paperwork that told what to send in, and Then said just get it to them in the mail, and it would take from one to two weeks to get it processed and her Passport back to her. Not sure what that meant, but in reading the letter, it basically states that That's all they need to issue the Visa :) (Send it ATTN. to the IV ISSUANCE ) SO, while we are not 100% positive, It looks as though we are through and just awaiting the Visa in the mail. We sent the info out overnight next day Noon delivery as soon as we got back from Montreal (and only got lost 3 times leaving there, woohoo!) Note to ANYONE wishing to VISIT Montreal; LOOK for a date when everyone there has their car in the shop and won't be on the roads, cause you WON"T enjoy driving anywhere in that city! Oh, and get new tires and shocks, you will NEED THEM.

Love ya all!

I'm all weepy (an emotional bundle of nerves lol). Old Montreal is beautiful and very romantic (I had wished that my Ed had been with me :)). The interview will be a breeze .. and I can say that only because of all of the information and support that we receive from VJ (I would have been totally lost without this place). Off I go to continue to pack with a great big smile on my face

CanadaSo Canadians - tell us about yourselves
Our story is along the same as quite a few here.

I am the USC and my dear hubbie is Canadian. My husband is originally from B.C. but had moved to Ontario to pursue some opportunities, and I am from Illinois.

We met playing an online game called Everquest. We had known of each other for about a year or so, but we both had been other relationships,so when we did play together, it was very formal.

In October of 2004 we had been chatting one night, chatting so well that he ended up missing his bus to work. Poor hubbie had to hoof it to work unsure.gif The next night he asked if we could start talking outside of the game. Since I had known him for some time,I did not mind going out of game to talk. After talking for about two weeks solid, my computer decided to die on me crying.gif I had left a message on one of the boards we visited letting him know I didnt know how soon I would be back. Needless to say, I did all I could not to be gone to long.

We ended up meeting in person in November 2004. We ended up leaving Everquest, and we both moved the game, World of Warcraft. We spent our free time together playing WoW, Pogo, or just chatting on the headset.

I drove to Canada and spent two weeks with him in December of 2004. On the way home (was a HUGE snowstorm) my cell provider died out on me. Took me several extra hours to get home, and by the time I got home, I was so exhausted that I just crawled into bed. The next morning he called frantic on the phone. He said, "did you listen to your voice mail?" and I said, "nope, was to exhausted, just went to bed." He then said, "well......I said something I have never said before....." so of course that had me curious. Listening to his voice mail made me cry. It was then that we realized we had found our soulmates. We were married in Feb 2005.

When looking at who was going to immigrate where, it was pretty obvious in the given time frames, that I would be moving to Canada. It is kind of odd though, my immigration from beginning to end took 3 months, and hubbies immigration took 3 months 2 weeks, from beginning to end. Kind of funny eh?

My name stems from the night we started looking at getting his immigration packet started. Canada as a whole has been a unique experience for me, but as the saying goes, theres no place like home. No matter how hard I tried to make Canada a home, just wasn't the same. ( I am not trying to put Canada/Canadians down, as I am sure some of you will understand where I come from.) And surprisingly, it was his idea to move back the States!

CanadaOK , Im getting run around about my car =/
Thanks for the tips and advice =) I am more frustrated due to the fact that when I bought this car ( 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE), I explained my circumstances to the dealership and I was assured that the car would be complient. At the time, the car's tag was a lil more than what we really intended to spend, but we figured it would save us from buying a non-complient car then have to sell it and after we landed, try to find another car. Probably wouldnt be so bad except my ex-husband messed up credit horribly cray5ol.gif (dont really want to get into to much detail there, but lets just say it will be a LONG time before my credit is any worthy to look at) and since my husband will have NO credit at all, we figured it would be more logical to spend the extra $$ for the car. It just makes me want to headbonk.gif the guys who gave me all this misleading information. Plus I have sank quite a bit of extra money into the car to get into good shape (just in the past 6 months we put on new tires, new starter, new alternator, replaced all the electric window controls, new brakes and pads, new a/c-heat modulator(think that is what it was called---but car had no heat/a-c so replaced the whole unit), new alignment and few normal things that is normal maintenance. The only thing that is left to do is put shocks/struts on the front end and replace the muffler (my bro-in has everything, just need to get the car there for him to fix it) I really love this car, so far the best car I have ever owned. I can get from Niagara Falls area in Canada all the way to Illinios/Iowa border on 1.5 tanks of gas. I dont want to hand it over if I dont have too sad.gif

So let me see if I understand this, I can drive the car to the poe, and just explain to them that we will be importing it within (lets just say for ex 6months)?

That would be wonderful if we could just tell them we are going to import it at a later date. I would be able to get everything fixed and hopefully get whatever needs to be fixed for the complience letter. I am hoping to find exactly what would need to be fixed and get some kind of quote. If it just a few hundred, that I can swallow, but not 2k .

I am going to give the Vintage Vehicle Services a call too and see what /and if they can help me.

Thanks a million everyone, there seems to be a lil bit more hope now dancin5hr.gif

CanadaOK , Im getting run around about my car =/
So I have spent most of today trying to find out about what is needed to import my car. I have a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix, so I called GM. The lady on the phone did not even let me finish, she rudely asked, "what year is your car?". So I told her 1997. She said, "it doesnt meet complience, so best off to sell it. Have a good day" and she hung up. I was like, wth????? mad.gif
So started searching some of the links provided and I couldnt find where my vehicle was not complient. Figured I would try again and try to get more info. The second time I had guy who seemed like he was eating his lunch while trying to help me(he actually belched in my ear ranting33va.gif ) I was actually able to fully ask my question before he started to ramble on. He said that since my car was "made in canada" I would have to take a "holiday" and go to the states and have it fixed. He said, your looking about $2000 to have it fixed huh2.gif . I told him there is a message board that I go to and that several people have imported vehicles from Canada, and could he explain to me why mine was not compatible. He said, "The USA absolutely refuses any vehicles from Canada. They are made in Canada therefor USA denies them all." He gave me a document id # and told me to drive my car to the states and have it fixed headbonk.gif . I asked him, "so, if I land with my husband, can we get it fixed after he lands ( I remember seeing a post that someone had taken their vehicle across, then later had it updated and then applied for permit for the dmv, but I cant find link now.). He said no you cant, you have to fix it before. So very frustrated, I called a local GM dealership to see if they could decipher this document ID #. The service dept guy said, well I can print that up for you. I was like , hmmm OK?????? He said it is the same thing people need when they bring their car from the us to Canada. He said all he needed was my VIN #. I am very unsure about this.

My head is swimming atm and I feel like I am about to drown. Our vehicle was going to be our transportation into the states, but now.......... crying.gif crying.gif crying.gif

Can anyone help me out ? Have any idea's? Suggestions ?? helpsmilie.gif idea9dv.gif

CanadaMoving back to Canada
Treble...I can feel what you are saying crying.gif . I send the warmest wishes to you and I really hope things do get better for you rose.gif rose.gif .

I moved to Canada in 2005, and it has been a very long and at times painful two years. My family and I are very close, and everyday seemed like an eternity(even though it was only 24hours hehehe). I finally had my cup overflow around easter. I have missed 2 family deaths, 2 weddings, and the first two years of my nephews life. For some things like this may not matter, but for me it was heart wrenching. On top of the fact that many people could tell I was from the states (darn accent! dry.gif and sometimes hubby wouldnt know when to NOT mention my citizenship hehe) and would treat me quite rudely and down right nasty to me. The only good thing is that I had my loving husband with me everyday, and that is what has kept me going. (and yes I know not ALL Canadians are like that wink.gif I have met alot of very sincere and friendly Canadians, and same goes for Americans, you can have some very rude and down right nasty individuals, and then there are the very sincere and friendly Americans smile.gif )

It does take time to adjust, which is never the fun or easy part of life (my dream solution would be that we have magical golden wands! laughing.gif ). I do agree with what several other folks have mentioned...maybe you could move to a bigger town and stay long enough to get naturalized. I know personally after going through both the Candian and American immigration, I would not want to ever go through either again no0pb.gif That way if down the road, you decide that you would want to move back to the USA, you wouldnt have to deal with all the pressures again. Before moving to Canada I lived in a fairly large city with an extremely large variety of things to do and see ( the area I was from had lots of music, art and theatre, and sports)so it was not hard to find something to do. The town I live in now is probably 1/4 the size of back home, and certainly does not have the selection of things to do here. I went through the same withdrawls yes.gif

I can say that if you do decide that you would be happier moving sooner than later, I would suggest filing out of the country. From the time my husband submitted his packet to the day I became I landed immigrant was 2 months. Now granted....that was 2 years ago, but ... I still watch the boards, and some of the folks that applied within Canada at the same time I did just finished up 2-3 months ago. Not every situation is the same, but would rather give you a realistic possibilities. At least if you do out of country, when your husband lands, he can start looking for work right away (after applying for SIN card at least). There will always be positive and negatives when it comes to immigration packets, just depends on which approach suites you the best.

Again, I really hope things get better for you! I hope that whatever path you decide to take, that you and your husband find peace and happiness in that journey. rose.gif rose.gif

CanadaDo I undertand this right ??
I didnt want to hijack trebles thread, but I did see someone mention that a Canadian PR can maintain PR status so long as they are living with the Canadian Citizen. Did I understand that correct ???? I was under the assumption that once I moved back to the States, I would have to give up my PR status because I am no longer living in Canada.(and unfortunately will not be able to stay here long enough to even consider Canadian citizenship). That would be awesome if I can retain my PR status, never know where the future takes us laughing.gif If anyone has any links to this info, I would appreciate it.

Thanks a million guys!
