CanadaK3 or K1?
Just a point to make .. with a K3 you can travel back to Canada if your homesick .. with a K1 you have to wait for advance parole which can take 3 months before you can leave the county :)

No lynamon, I've not heard a thing. I check online about twice a week, and it says nothing other than my return has been recieved. Not even a DATE that it was received! It's been about 14 weeks now.

Just wondering if you've heard any news as of late? .... I've heard nothing yet ...

April.

To clarify, I don't owe them money. But my $2400 refund has been changed to a $1200 refund. The basic personal exemptions (let's assume for math purposes they're $9,000 for BC and $9,000 for Federal, have been reduced to $4500)

Going to try phoning again today and see what's up.

Did you ever get in touch with them? ... I filed with a letter attached stating that I was claiming full credits as my income was from Canadian sources for the year .... just wondering if it's the same situation ...

They will pay daily compound interest after the latest date of the following:
  • May 31st
  • 31 days after your tax filing has been filed (received by CRA)
  • The day after you overpaid your taxes.

Oh #######, really? Are you serious? wow.gif then we should ALL be paid interest if it will take them as much as they say, right????? [[[[getting greedy]]]]]

I knew that they paid interest ... just didn't know exactly when they were required to do so. Thanks Texanadian. Looks like I'll receive my refund sometime in August lol.

CanadaRe-establishing Your Girlie Connections..
Well ... I've been here almost two years now and have gone through three different hairdressers already. Up until about 6 months ago I hadn't developed any real girlie connections but I've finally found a couple of girls that have a similar mindset that I do. I didn't realize how tough that would be to do!! Once you do find those girlie connections that's where you will get all of the info you need. Where to shop, where to get your hair and nails done ... all the info you need from a womans inside point of view. My newest hairdresser is my friends sister that just graduated from hairdressing school ... she does a great job and is way less expensive than what I've been paying. As for getting nails done ... I get mine done when I travel back to Canada once a month (no fake nails) ... the prices down here are too expensive.

Hi everyone,
Im new to this site and I am an approved green card holder but I do have a question about past experiences crossing canadian/usa borders with a u haul. There is very little information out there as to how it works, which lanes to cross in ex. commercial lane, bus lane or car lane? Im going back to Canada this weekend to bring personal belongings to the usa and need some experiences and guidance. Thank you so much ! Cheers

As far as I know you can transport your personal belonging within one year of activation of your visa (for duty not to apply)... I orginally came over with a Uhaul when I activated my visa ... I crossed at the Peace Bridge and used the Car/Bus lane ... I had a complete listing of what I was bringing over ... quite frankly they didn't even open the back of the truck.

I went down to the walkin clinic the other day and they had a lineup. So I left my application with the receptionist so she could ask one of the doctors there if I could use his name as guarantor. Went back and hour later..."No problem.

I even called directory assistance, and when I asked for the number for "Service Ontario"........."We have a listing for Purvis. Would you like the number?"........."NO!!" laughing.gif

I challenge anyone here who is from Ontario, to find me a direct line to talk to someone at the Service Ontario office in Pembroke. The toll free number is 1-800-461-2156. Have fun. tongue.gif

My next option is to go down to the office again.

Hello Erin,
Unfortunately Pembroke doesn't have a Service Canada office. The Office of the Registrar General (they take care of Birth, Marriage & Death certificates) is in Thunder Bay and the best way to contact them live is on their Toronto based number 416-325-8305 you will be able to speak with someone live that can answer all your questions and provide you with possible alternatives.

Thankyou for the Thunder Bay number. I was referring to the Service Ontario office, and yes there's one in Pembroke. I got my application form there. Since I don't have a car, and it's a distance to go, I emailed Service Ontario using their "contact us" link on their webpage. I told them nobody at my bank would be a guarantor, I asked if a guarantor is necessary when applying for the long form, and asked if Pembroke had a direct number I could call. I got this reply:

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email. In the fall of 2001, the Ontario government passed a new law to change and strengthen the security and safeguards in place for issuing birth certificates and to protect Ontarians from identity theft and fraud.

The role of the guarantor is to certify that information provided on a birth certificate application is as complete and accurate as possible. If required, a qualified guarantor must also be available to verify the information with the Thunder Bay Production and Verification Services Branch.

We regret that this has caused you any inconvenience. We are sure you can appreciate why these changes have been made. Your Ontario birth certificate is the key to your identity. The rules are more stringent and more secure.

The phone number for the Service Ontario office in Pembroke, Ontario for general government information is:
1 800 268-8758 Toll free in Ontario.

They also gave me the number for Thunder Bay. So I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow morning, or perhaps bike down to the office in Pembroke.

I suppose I could go down to the walkin clinic, since I don't have a family doctor, and ask one of the doctors there if they'll allow me to use their name. But it's not like they know me personally either. Geeeeeeez! huh.gif

see here $35 for long birth certs, took about a week to receive. Also can get marriage certs.

I have the same form on hand that is available online.

I was at my bank yesterday and talked to 4 people (starting at the teller, all the way up to manager) to see if someone could put their name down as guarantor. Nobody would do it, regardless of the fact I have been banking at the same bank for 3 years now. They read on the form that they must know me for at least 2 years. They kept saying they didn't know me PERSONALLY. I pointed out that the word "personally" was not mentioned. They said they couldn't sign it, and I pointed out that there was no place on the form for a guarantor's signature, only their name, occupation and phone number. I explained to them that the gov't only needed to verify that I did indeed have an account there and that I WAS an actual person. LOL Nope...nobody would put their name on it. headbonk.gif

So.........I'll be on the phone to Service Ontario this morning..........blahhhhhhhhhhhhh....."Push 1 for English........." wacko.gif

Ok, the long form it is. I'm not taking chances. Besides, 6-8 weeks did seem quite a long time to be waiting. My mom applied to get a new birth certificate last year because hers was old and in bad shape, and I think she got hers within 3 weeks.

The reason I didn't order mine online is because I had questions about it before sending it in, so I wanted a hard copy to refer to.

I was told at Service Ontario, that the guarantor doesn't need to SIGN the application. I just need to enter their name, where they live, their occupation and a phone number where they can be reached. They only need to know that their name is on it, and to maybe expect a call.

I WOULD have used my family doctor, but I don't have one. You know how it is these days...you move from one community to another and have to get on a waiting list for a doc. I just use the walkin clinic, and I don't have the same doctor each time.

So hopefully someone at the bank can do it for me, since I've been banking there for almost 4 years now.

Thanks for all your replies.

CanadaApplying for Canadian long for birth certificat
1. Name and address of doctor attending the birth...I put "unknown"...(I'm pretty sure that's ok since my mom has no idea what his name was) I also put birth weight as "unknown." I'm assuming since I'm not applying for a certificate for a newborn, they've probably got all that info about me on file anyway.

2. "Why are you requesting this information?"...I put "Immigration purposes. K-1 Visa"...is that enough? Also in the same section it says I "MUST check one of the following boxes"...I checked "First time applying for Birth Certificate/Certified Copy of Birth registration."

3. For the guarantor, it says that one person I could use is a signing officer at my bank. Has anyone had an experience with this type of situation?

And a hypothetical question...

I already have my short for birth certificate (the regular credit card sized one). Is there any chance that this will be enough? I was told it would be 6-8 weeks before I would receive the long form. Just seems like such a longgggg time. *sigh*

3. Does Montreal require that medicals are done the same day as the interview, or is it to be done ahead of time with results sent to the embassy directly from the doctor?

I'm ready to send away the applications for long form birth certificate and marriage certificate. Nowhere on the applications does it mention sending "certified" cheques. Would a regular cheque be ok? Maybe someone else here has had an application sent back because their cheque wasn't certified? I just want to be sure.

I just called the family court office this morning to find out if my cheque needs to be certified that I included in the letter requesting a divorce certificate, and the answer was YES.

I've started thinking about this as well, it will be hard to only see them once a year. However with webcams the little ones can talk to them once a week if they want, so they can still be really involved in the kids lives even if they arent immediately there. I know its a small consolation, but for me it helped a little.

I was thinking the exact same thing as Danu when I read your post, Laura. So many people use computers and webcams these days to keep in touch with their loved ones. Just the other day a couple and their 1 year old son came into the restaurant where I work. When I was talking to them I learned that the father had just returned from 8 months in Afghanistan. While he was away they all kept in touch online with webcams...showing baby "there's daddy" etc. and having daddy talk to baby so he could hear his voice. Turns out that the baby didn't make strange with daddy at all when he got home!

I think your emotions are just running high right now because Nick's sister had a baby. Your time will come, and you will deal with things as they are handed to you. So keep your chin up. There are alot of people here who know just what you're going through. rose.gif

No, we haven't changed our minds about marrying and moving me to the States. But I was just curious to know more about Canadian immigration laws and how it affects people who want to bring a spouse/fiance from the States to live in Canada. Is it faster than the other way around? Less expensive?

Does anyone know of a website/support group who has good info about this? I'd just like to read more about it, for my own curiosity.
