CanadaDo all police checks through CPIC go through Ottawa?
Ok, thanks everyone! I guess the officers (there were 2, plus a secretary) were ALL confused. I'll have to set them straight. ;)

CanadaDo all police checks through CPIC go through Ottawa?
I was at our local police station today, asking about getting a police check done in the near future. They said I need to make an appointment with them there to get fingerprints done, then the prints are sent to Ottawa to check against the criminal database. We didn't speak at length because I was in a bit of a hurry, so I didn't ask if I send the prints or they do. Anybody know?

And do all Canada wide police checks go through Ottawa? Just wondering.

It's on the right-hand side of the photo, a couple of meters from the corner.

When I zoomed in closer, I thought I could see a woman standing there holding a rather large envelope. Could that be one of us?

CanadaPost Decision Activity

Tim filed the I-129F petition - you will apply for the K-1 (sorry - technicality)

It sure sounds like you should be receiving an NOA2 soon!

Good Luck

I knew that. I just didn't WRITE that. Anyway...sooooo glad we didn't get any rfe's. I had been a little nervous about Tim's divorce certificate, but I guess all's well!

CanadaPost Decision Activity
Tim (USC) filed the K-1 for me at the end of March. A few weeks ago we started checking our case status online. It had always said "Initial Review" until yesterday. Now it says "Post Decision Activity" and we're expecting an approval notice in the mail. Would that be the NOA2? It just seems so soon. Should I be getting excited??

CanadaMixed emotions these days...
We are on a K-1 journey. We got the NOA2 about a week ago, and we were so happy. At the time I was in the States with Tim, planning on staying until August 3.

Then last Tuesday I got a call to come back early because my sister had taken a turn for the worst (end stage cancer) and I had to get home as soon as possible. I arrived at the hospital on Friday, and she passed away within half an hour. She was heavily sedated but she knew me and my brother and her husband were there. Her husband said she waited for us, and that she chose the time to go.

So now I have alot on my plate with tying up things here, and I probably will not be able to return to the States before I get my interview date. I miss Tim and my new home so badly, but I am torn between there and here at the moment. My place right now is here of course, but wow......what a mixture of emotions.

Just needed to talk...... :(

CanadaChecking status at NVC stage, then Montreal
Hi folks. Got NOA2 couple weeks ago. Will I be able to continue checking the application's status online when it reaches NVC, and then Montreal? I hear people talking about "touches." What's that all about, eh? :P
Tim and ErinFemaleCanada2010-06-24 22:31:00
CanadaHow long should this take?
We filed for K-1 end of March. We recently got NOA2. I was visiting Tim at the time so we could wait out most of the process together. I was to stay until beginning of August but was called back early for my sister's funeral.

My intention had been to come back in August and have my police check and vaccinations done then, and hopefully my medical and interview wouldn't be too long after. Now that I'm back in Canada, I figure I could get those things done right away, then possibly return to the U.S. until I get my interview date.

What I'm wondering is how long it usually takes to have the paperwork back from the police check. I'd love to hear from others about their experiences with this. I also need to see a doc at the walkin clinic to have a titre test done, and vaccinations if necessary. That part shouldn't take too long at all.

My goal is to go back Tim's as soon as possible. I'm also wondering what my chances are of being allowed back into the U.S. so soon, considering my last visit was cut so short.

Oh and I may as well ask this next question, since it's somewhat related... What are my chances of getting some kind of discount through the airline, considering the cirumstances (funeral) that I had to change my return date and was therefore charged an extra $150? I've heard that airlines are sometimes sympathetic to these situations and will waive the fee or give a discount on the next flight. Just wondering.

CanadaChanging your last name; thoughts?
Oh I forgot to mention...even though the kids will have the ex's last name...I'm taking my new husbands last name. I've had 5 years to think about it and I've come to the conclusion that even though he has said that its not necessary...... I figure at this point me not having the same name as the kids won't be a huge deal. I'll just spend alot of time correcting teachers etc. I had thought I would keep it till the kids were alot older (or gone lol) but it'll be a HUGE pain in the butt to change it later in the US and a lot easier to change it right after the wedding.
LiLMermaidFemaleCanada2009-05-01 13:43:00
CanadaChanging your last name; thoughts?
Well speaking as the "ex-wife" I'd GLADLY let the new wife be the one and only Mrs SoandSo. We have 3 kids together and I can't change their last names along with mine so I will unfortunately always be known as Mrs SoandSo by teachers, principals and anyone else who is involved in the lives of the children. When I get remarried it doesn't matter what my last name is cause I will still be known as MrsExlastname at the kids school and MrsNewlastname by anyone associated with my new husband. So as much as it may annoy the new wife....it annoys me hundred times more.

CanadaMoving down to US
I've yet to see anybody who had to upack their whole uhaul so immigration could rummage through it. If you hire upack they give you the forms to fill out and its not as complicated as it appears. My fiance moved to Canada from the US with a uhaul and he had no idea about forms and what not....they didn't care. They looked at his work visa and that was it. When he moved back he used upack and just gave them copies of his birth certificate, work visa and filled out the forms. I had this whole itemized list and he took it and changed it to "6 boxes decorations, 5 boxes books, 4 boxes clothes, 8 boxes kitchen items...etc" I think all they really look at is if you have all your documents in order and have a legitimate reason to be moving all this stuff across as we will. Don't stress about it....he did and both ways they really could have cared less.

I got one from the York regional police...I think I paid 40 bucks for it. The only main requirement is that it states that the national repository was searched. just try to hold on for a little bit you will get your good news soon, my case with nvc should be complete by mid november, then the real waiting game begin's, I just don't know why it takes montreal so long to schedule the CR-1 folks, the K's are flying by us at supersonic speed. Hopefully they will resolve this issue at the embassy.

P.S not here to offend the K filer's congrat's on speedy journy heart.gif

Well the way I see it alot of the K1's had to wait along time too, some of them recently scheduled sent back their packet 3's in June. So we seen June right up to Oct packet 3 filers given interviews. I think the same is going to happen to the CR1 folks. The next round of interviews is going to be a whole catch up thing. Hopefully once they get that backlog cleared up then the scheduling will be alot faster for us that are just sending in our packet 3's now. I'm feeling like I 'missed the boat' .....others that I filed with or before got their NOA2's faster and lucked out on fast interviews and I'm not sure I'm going to be so lucky. No one knows for sure with Montreal. I could still end up waiting 4 months or more to get a date and the lucky ones that send in their packet 3's 4 months from now could end up getting an interview the same time as me.

Who knows....its all a guessing game at this point.

I hope you're all right -- sometimes I get so angry and frustrated with Montreal but as you know, there's nothing I can do. I can't read any other thread where people complete at NVC and get an interview assigned like a week or so later.

But all in due time I suppose. And thanks for all your kind support, it actually means quite a lot....

I'd tell you all I loved you but that would just be SO weird...

So, was talking to my husband today and he was saying that his daughter, (whom i love like no other person) was asking why can't LGG just come and live with us? Why do we have to wait so long?
When is she going to get here...

I have to tell you? It freaking broke my heart into a million pieces. I mean, it's crappy enough when my husband is like, "gaaaaaah, we didn't get an interview AGAIN?" but he and I, we deal with it. It's depressing and hard but we're fine. But thinking about my little sunshine girl saying stuff like that and not getting was totally heartbreaking to me.

I'm only going on about it here because I know you guys can relate. I know you all understand what it feels like. It also feels like to me that it's going to be one of those months that NVC doesn't schedule any CR1 interviews and such. Most months when they do, they've started already by now and well...

Anyway. Its' getting really hard, this waiting. But I just wanted to say something -- you guys get it. I know that no one can tell me anything to make me feel better but sometimes it just feel good saying it to people who understand.

Thanks for listening.

I can totally relate. My fiance lived with us (myself and 3 kids) for 3 years and then had to come back to the US for reasons I won't get into but he had no choice at the time. The kids were crushed as obviously we couldn't just pack up and leave with him. It was a nightmare I wouldn't want to live over again thats for sure.

I'm a bit confused over this post. unsure.gif They do international text messaging and you can opt for the per-text billing..... I think it's 35 cents per message or something. I don't recall there being a restriction on non-domestic texts. Maybe that's a new thing.

Okay, there's an international texting package that you pay $9.99 for, and it gives you 100 text messages. With this package, you're paying roughly $0.09 a text message to Canada. Without the package, you pay $0.25 a text message, but there isn't a restriction. Should you get the package, every text past 100 will charge the standard $0.25 rate. There's no restriction on the number of texts, in general, just on how many you can get for the cheaper rate if you get the package. Does that make any sense?

That's why I just use the program I recommended with my iPhone. However, I know that not everyone has one, so the package is an option if you're willing to spend the extra cash.

You'd think they'd allow some type of unlimited international texting package... sad.gif I keep hoping they will someday, since my fiance texts all of his friends, and he'll likely just be added to my package when he moves down here. Silly AT&T...

Canada to US isn't considered international on any provider in the US and Canada that I have seen. I used Bell in Canada and he had verizon in the US and all txts were included on both our plans as part of the unlimited txt msging. Telus doesn't charge extra either....nor does At&t. I don't think any of them do.

QUOTE (Arabella @ Aug 14 2009, 01:03 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Has anyone found a good cell phone provider for calling and texting Canada? I use phone cards because my cell company charges $.29/min for calling Canada. Texts cost me $.29 per text so I got a "bundle" that lets me send only 100 texts a month for $9.99 (this is just for texts sent to Canada, I also pay for a separate US text plan). I know I am not getting a good deal on either. When Sean moves here I would like to just change companies to make it easier for him to call home.

I tried searching online but didn't come up with anything.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

We have verizon with unlimited txting, Canada is included. I purchased a 'skype to go' Us to Canada calling plan for $2.95 a month. It gives you a local US number to call and then you call the Canada number. I added that local number as a favorite so it doesn't use any of my minutes included in plan. Works great.

CanadaGot my Florida license and bank account open a few days ago
QUOTE (domegirl1978 @ Dec 1 2009, 02:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
HI everyone! So on Monday my hubby and I went to the DMV in Delray beach which is in Palm Beach County. I went with my birth certificate, passport, my Quebec license, my ssn (i already had one from years ago from when i went to college here), my marriage certificate and 2 utility bills with my name on them.

They asked me what I was there for and informed them I was there to change my license from a Canadian one to the Florida one. I got a number and was told to wait. When I was called the girl informed me that she needed my Canadian license, passport and utility bill to prove I had an address here.
I informed her that I used to have a Florida license and she found me in the computer. She told me that because I had had a license from FL in the past that I did not have to give up my Quebec license. However, for people who are getting their FL license for the first time, they would have to either give up the Canadian license or retake the driving test. They never asked for my ssn or marriage certificate. They NEVER looked at my I-94 in the passport.

She took my picture and printed out a temporary license and told me I would receive my real license within 30 days in the mail. The fee was 48$. All in all it took an hour. I got there at 7:45am and they open at 8am where I live. I was out by 9am.

We then went to Bank of America to open an account. They asked me for my passport, my Canadian drivers license, some Canadian credit cards, I also let them see my Medicare card just as another form of picture i.d. She also asked me for my ssn number and marriage certificate. The whole process at Bank of America took about an hour. I don't think they would have let me open the bank account without my ssn number but I can't be sure. She wanted my marriage certificate because I opened my own account but also attached myself to my husbands savings account.

I may be forgetting something but if anyone has any questions please ask away. Maybe a question from one of you will jog my memory as to something I forgot to mention.

We are going on our honeymoon on Dec. 12th to Disney and I'll be back on the 21st of December and that will be when I start all the AOS paperwork. I'm sure I'll have ALOT of questions for everyone once again. LOL.

They will let you open an account without a SSN at Bank of America. My fiance and I have a joint account there.

CanadaWhat the what?
My brothers friend has a house in Florida and one in Ontario and spends 6 months at each. Has 2 licenses and 2 passports. I guess if you still have an address in Canada like he does...he owns a home there and I assume he still files taxes in both countries....he's basically allowed to. Florida law does state that you do have to have a Florida license after being here for 30 days....so does Ontario so really...he HAS to. Snowbirds have that option as well but I don't know how many bother.

CanadaCanadians on US Health Care reform
QUOTE (Ontarkie @ Jul 25 2009, 10:02 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I worry about my asthma here too. 3 of us have asthma its under control but with as many allergies as we have it can get ugly fast. I hate how they give us the run around on the puffers we use, like the steroid. We left Canada using flovent and salbutamol ( we get down here and get put on symbicort then after a year on that we get switched to pulmicort cause the insurance felt like it. And how the manufacturers don't have a generic brand yet for albuterol so we have to pay an arm and a leg for the name brand. it irritates me because we have the generic brands back home for the longest time.

Anyways, living in the Sault my whole life I got some of the crappy end of the health care like no Doctor for 5 yrs and the walk in clinics being backed up 5 hours or just not being opened at all, to having my son break his arm and not having one of the 5 orthopedic surgeons come in so they send us to Timmins to get his arm set. My daughter and other son got treatment right away. My daughter had her appendix burst she had a CAT scan right away and surgery done before morning. My oldest boy broke his arm and had surgery right away too. It all depends in the Sault who's turn for their specialist to take off Timmins Sudbury or the Sault. I guess if its real b ad they get called anyways but its their way of making it known that the doctors need help out here.

Now I like the easy access of Doctors here they are everywhere, its not that long of a wait to see most of the specialist we had to see, but I can't compare Central Arkansas to Sault Ste. Marie cause its not a fair comparison. We are in the middle of it all here and in the Sault well your in the middle of know where.

The cost of insurance for the 6 of us is crazy the co pays are just dumb and we don't have vision or dental, drugs are still more expansive then we pay back in Canada. So ya I would love to have what I had back in Canada but have the extra doctors and easier access to them then the Sault. But I guess I could of moved out of the Sault and got that too. I miss health care in Canada.

Hope I didn't ramble on and made sense
Danielle

I was born and raised in the Sault as well. I haven't lived there in years but I have some family there still and the healthcare is ####### there right now. They are too busy improving their hospital and not concentrating on the quality of their care right now. My niece was there visiting some family a month ago and she had to go to the ER because she was puking up blood. They didn't even run any tests....sent her home and told her to go see her family Dr when she got back to Toronto in a week.

Now my family doctor has to type everything up and get it off to the Consulate doctor. We are hoping that this will be the end to the medical examination, which started on June 7th and I will have the documentation in my hands by at the latest mid August.

That's great!!! you should have that issue all cleared up before your interview :)

Right now we're not expecting anything from Montreal until September so for sure the medical issues should be resolved by then. I will call the doc in two weeks to see if she has everything and find out when I can expect to get the docs.

I'm as organized as I'm going to get .. just have to get myself there in one piece (travelling the 401 E don't ya know!!). There have been a few booked for July (mine's on the 18th) that were booked in June .. not many though.

I really don't think that they book the 15th of the month (I think that they just say that to buy themselves some time).. if you remember my posts, they sent out my interview letter on June 11th (it was booked the Thursday of the previous week). Just to update you, Still nothing from Montreal. I've been spending most of my time trying to convince Sharon not to give up, but she's about at the point of complete despair. She's been living in a room at the YWCA for a while since all of this was supposed to have happened by April, originally. Those 4 walls have been closing in on her for a long time now, and I can understand her frustration waiting for what has seemed like an eternity now. (Just to let you know, she couldn't renew her lease since she was anticipating the move here way back at the first part of this year, so the "Y" was a "temporary" stopgap for a month or two until the appointment. Well, that's turned into 6 months, and looking like it will drag on for at least another couple of months.) I'll let you know.

CanadaMTL Timeline to Interview
My apologies, but I would like to request that the bantering be carried forth in private PM's .. this is the MTL Timeline to Interview thread and I'm sure that the majority would not like to see it locked.

Now on to Alan and Sharon ... we haven't heard whether or not you have contacted Montreal recently .. I've been crossing both my fingers and toes for you :)

Lynette, could you please post here or PM me once you receive your Packet4/Interview letter in the mail. I just want to know approximately how long it takes from the day they schedule to the time you receive it in the mail.

Thank you

I received my letter today .. it was post marked on the envelope June 11th ... 3 days from Montreal to hear (it took from Thursday to Monday to pop it in the mail)
