CanadaSwiss Chalet Closing Restaurants

OBX-Lol..I never knew Swiss Chalet existed in the USA either..
Until I drove by one in Buffalo, NY...And then had to wonder, "Am I on the right side of the border?"
Unfortunately, I realized it too late..As now the US Swiss Chalets are closing....
Oh yeah...Swiss Chalet is now a "must" when visiting Canada! Since there aren't any here in the USA.......
I love the Christmas/Thanksgiving chicken dinners that they used to have there....(free tolberone (sp) chocolate bar too...yum!)
I love the Sauce too (can't find anything equivalent to that here in the USA either...It's the best sauce ever!)...
Ant

P.S. Does anyone know if they sell Swiss Chalet sauce in any Canadian grocery stores? Wondering if I can stock up on such, the next time I'm over the border...Hmm...I wonder how Swiss Chalet sauce tastes with Buffalo Chicken Wings....Now that's what I call a Canadian/American treat!

Yup they sure do! They sell the powder package stuff but I think I seen the sauce in cans as well. I figure the little packets will stuff nicely into my luggage before I move. Its on my 'to do' list before leaving Canada! lol

Canadanoa2

Hi all, i just got approved for my k1 visa last wednesday and have just received my hardcopy today. It says that we have forwarded this approval notice onto the listed consulate, and above my name in the beneficiary section i have a number that begins with A. wondering does this mean they have sent it directly to montreal and bypassed the nvc, i thought from vermont it had to go nvc and then they forwarded it onto montreal or vancouver, is it different for canadians

thanks fellow canucks.

It goes to the NVC first...we all got the same letter.

Canadahealth insurance

Hello Canadians... I really need your help and assistance with this matter...

I moved to the US on Dec 28th, using my K-1 visa, we just sent in our AOS package the other day. Now comes the problem, I am experiencing severe pain in my knee. I had surgery on it 5 years back, but am having problems now. I was told to go see a doctor but without insurance I am scared at how much it will cost me :( I was looking into getting health insurance, is it true Canadians have to wait 6 months before we can get health insurance? Does anyone know what I should do? Anyone know how much it would cost to go see a knee doctor? Has anyone gone back to Canada after they entered the US to see a doctor?

Please help... I am in pain and don't know what to do :(

Does your husband have any insurance? I know once my fiance and I marry I become immediately covered through his work. If he has insurance he should be able to add you as marriage, having a baby etc is considered a 'life altering event' in which his plan can be changed to include you. I wouldn't suggest coming back to Canada for healthcare at this point because you've lost your residency status now and would have to be here 3 months before you'd even be eligible for healthcare again. If you leave before you get your AP you're totally screwed and it just wouldn't be worth it.

CanadaCanadian Life Insurance Help Needed...
if you know which company issued the policy I would call and see if you can change your beneficiary. Thats what I did when I found out my ex husband was still paying on our life insurance policies after I told him to cancel mine because I couldn't afford it. I called and changed the beneficiary to my fiance. He's still paying on it even though he now won't profit from my demise.

CanadaKids at interview
Yeah I'm not worried about them asking the kids anything. I am just concerned with the cost at this point. I wanted to take the train but now its going to cost me 400 instead of 150 plus food expenses etc. The kids also tend to add to my stress in these situations...my girls are not ones to sit still for long and they will talk anybody's head off who gives them a chance. If the interviewer does ask them a question they'd best be in it for the long haul because those girls will spend forever telling them ALL about my fiance and how annoyed they are that he got to go to Florida while we had to wait here! I guess it could only help prove a relationship, not only with me but with them as well. Although one would think the fact that we lived together as a family in Canada for almost 3 years would suffice.

I do think the kids would enjoy the train though...for at least the first half hour!

CanadaKids at interview
Well I emailed Montreal and finally got an answer. They replied "Yes, the children should attend the interview".
I stated their ages in the email and they are all under 14. I guess this trip just got a whole lot more expensive. They were still pretty vague in their answer of course. Not "NEED" or "HAVE TO" just a "SHOULD" attend. So at this point I'm not going to leave them behind and take a chance thats for sure.

CanadaKids at interview
Do children of K1 visa applicants have to attend the interview at Montreal? I thought they didn't but according to the interview letter it says they do unless they get a waiver if they are under 14. I'm not sure if that applies to K1's or not. Anybody know for sure? I emailed Montreal as well but who knows when they'll get back to me. I'd like to book my hotel and transportation here soon and need to know.

You do not have to send in your birth certificate or the police search etc. These are required at the interview. Bring the originals and copies.

CanadaWaiting for NOA2 - 53 days - Worry yet?
Depends on which consulate you are interviewing at. Vancouver is usually faster but its hard to tell with Montreal. They have been painfully slow but they seem to have just about gotten caught up now. Possibly when your time comes it may be alot faster.

We were approved. We got there a tad late and were in a HUGE line so we didn't get out of there until 12:30 ish. I think I may have seen a couple of people from vj there but I'm not sure. I was the one with the 3 kids. With nothing to do but people watch for half the day if you tell me what you were wearing I'll know if it was you or not. lol

Canadaquick question

What info did they need regarding your son as far as proof that his father was aware of the move? I'm in the process of arranging for my son to move and I was told that all I needed was a notarized letter from his mother. Please don't tell me thay want more than this.

Cdnmn

I had my interview on March 30th and all I provided was a notarized letter stating that the kids had permission to relocate to the USA permanently. He did compare the signature on that to the signature on our marriage certificate so if you have a copy of that it might be good to bring. I also have it written into our court documents etc that I have permission to move but those weren't asked for, the letter was enough.

had my interview in April. Be early...like REALLY early...I wasn't and was there till afternoon. It was very uneventful, the guy that interviewed me was very pleasant and asked basic questions. Have all your documents prepared...he spent alot of time looking for one document and I found it faster in my pile then he could in his.

CanadaVisa on hold waiting for childs
Oh and if its a CR1 she doesn't need to AOS...only K1's and K3's need to do that. So if it was a CR1 it would have been done when she entered the country and she wouldn't be here as a 'visitor' only the child would be. If they let her in as a visitor and didn't activate her visa, then she will need to leave and re-enter at some point. Wow..pretty confusing stuff. Hopefully they can give her other options at the infopass appointment.

CanadaCanadians on US Health Care reform
I've heard the term being "lucky" alot when people are referring to how much they spend on insurance ... but I've also had conversations with people that are self employed that really aren't so lucky ... . I know people that don't go to the doctors when they really really should because they can't afford the out of pocket expenses and other people that have had to claim bankruptsy due to medical expenses from a car accident that no average individual could possibly pay .. for a child that was covered under medicare .. these are expenses that went over and above just to get their child taken care of.

I don't see a huge difference in what we pay for things here and what we pay for things in Canada ... except for of course gas smile.gif ... minimum wage is higher there adjusted to the cost of living... and I make around the same amount here than I did in Canada and my responsibility for health care on my income taxes was a whopping $300 ... a year ... I paid for medical and dental through my work ...and that was an option ... which I paid out about the same that I utilized.

My husband has worked the same job for 12 years and heaven forbid if he had to change jobs or worse yet lose it .. with his medical history ... I just wonder why this has to be a worry.

CanadaCanadians on US Health Care reform
I have never been very political but I find myself having more of a view and an opinion on politics since moving to the US.

President Obama was in the Cleveland area this past Thursday speaking on Health Care reform (I tried to get tickets without success) and just this last week a co-worker asked me about Canadian Health Care.

As I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario I never had a problem getting a doctor, acquiring an appointment and when I needed specialized care, there were never any issues ... and I never saw a bill.

Since moving to the US I have had to learn about the different plans available through my husbands work, about co-pays, deductibles ect ect and I have also had to learn about Medicare and AARP as we take care of my father in law (which I have to admit I'm still not up to speed). It just all seems to be so over complicated ... and it seems that the money paid for coverage is so overinflated with so many loop holes and gaps. The difference in generics and tier meds and the prices that you pay cash or the prices that are charged to the insurance company ... and I've been to many hospitals as my husband has had to undergo some major medical procedures and I really do feel that something with the way this system is right now is so brutally broken and complicated. I don't understand why it is that all Americans are not for Socialized Health Care. I've had a doctor find out that I'm from Canada and comment that I come from a health care system that acually works and two of my husbands doctors that are world renouned actually did their residency in Toronto, Ontario at St. Margarets. I've watched "Sicko" ... and I was just wondering if anyone else coming from Canada has a similar view ... why are Americans so against it?

CanadaSent I 751 yesterday and now a little freaked
Hi,

I just mailed my I 751 yesterday and today I got nervous that I was supposed to include passport style photos so I went to the uscis website and noticed that they updated the form 12/31/09 ... I printed out the form that expired October and sent that one ... is this going to be a problem?

Another question is how does one travel back to Canada with an expired green card with an NOA provided that I get one (my GC expires 02/21/10)

CanadaOne letter from employer as proof of ties to Canada on short visits?

My fiance and I know that for him to visit me in the US while the I-129F is in process, he has to provide proof of ties to Canada. His best option is a letter from his employer.

I'm currently seeking employment, so we don't know whether we'll be able to visit after Dave gets a car and before I get a job in which case we could visit for a week; or if I get a job before or around the same time as he gets a car, we'll have to make do with weekend visits. (If I'm not working weekends.)

Will the POE likely accept a letter that is written around now, that says he is to return to work until around September, 2010.. are they likely to accept that each time he is to cross the border? If his boss provides a phone number at which they can reach him, to verify? He doesn't want to inundate his boss with requests for ten or fifteen letters, once or twice a month... that seems a bit much.

Dave will need to get the letter(s) from the lady in the office instead of directly from his boss because his boss doesn't do his own paperwork.
The office lady will need to mail him the letter, because both Dave and his boss work out of the shop or field offices, not the main office.
So this means we need to plan ahead. And if we plan a visit, and my job calls me in for that weekend, we've wasted a one-weekend letter. >_< And we could have a planned visit, but the letter could have gotten delayed in the mail, and ruin our planned weekend visit. If having one letter would work, that would eliminate the need to plan ahead for weekend visits.

So our main question is whether or not he could use one letter for every cross-border visit he makes if it states he is to return to work until roughly September?

I used to do up the letter and have them sign it ... If he's not regularily in the office an easy way of doing it is by scan/email .. all depending on the relationship he has with the lady in the office .. have him bring her something as a thank you for her efforts :)

CanadaGoing to get Washington State Drivers License

I moved from B.C. to Washington State and got my WA dl in Sept 08, they just punch a hole in it and give it back to you (just found it in my drawer). You are lucky, they just changed it right after I got mine to being treated like moving from another state. I had to take my written and road test again.....pretty scary after having my license for 28 years!!!!!

I was in a similar situation here in Ohio. After taken the written I thought that they would book me for a road test another day but they were able to fit me in ... I was worried that I would fail and not be able to get home ... I felt 16 all over again lol. They didn't request my Ontario license.

Sorry...I know the answer to this question has been posted somewhere on here, but I can't remember the solution...

Thankyou all. :)

But really...no question can be a dumb question in here, right? lol

CanadaCanada to UK postal rates
I don't think this is the correct forum for my question, but I couldn't figure out where else to put it.

I'm in Canada, wanting to send a parcel off to someone in the UK who is expecting a baby any day now. I haven't got her address yet from another person, so I can't look up the postal rates on Canada Post website. I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever sent a parcel to the UK and if it's very expensive. I doubt this parcel will weigh more than 5 or 6 lbs. once it's all packaged up.

Thanks for any replies.
