CanadaPolice Certificate in Canada?
I'll be going next week to get mine done, bright and early at 8 am :crying: (as I work a 9-5.)

I emailed their office last night and they got back to me promptly at 8:30 this morning. I asked what the fee is for the check I needed and I was told $42 and change, including tax.

Commissionaires seems a lot better than going to the cop shop.

CanadaPolice Certificate in Canada?
I'll be going to the Commissionaires. Toronto Police take forever, and I don't want to have to go out of the city to get it done - my local police station told me that would be faster than going through their main HQ. He told me they didn't even do checks at stations.

CanadaWanting to spend as little time apart (Canadian+American)
SF2007 pretty much covered it. You're better off going on shorter visits as opposed to super long ones. When you travel you must, must, must bring ties back to Canada to prove that you aren't trying to take off to the States (as this is a big no-no.) Lease agreements are one of the more solid means of evidence you can use. If you convince the Border Officer you're not trying to live in the U.S. as a tourist, you might get issued a B2 visa at the border (a stamp in your passport.) As Canadians we don't have to apply for them and can are granted depending on the officer you talk to. It gives you six months/180 days of unlimited travel between the U.S. and Canada. The stamp should include the date that the visa expires (mine always did - I've gotten three. One for a two week visit, two for summer long visits.) In general, when preparing to travel just put yourself in the shoes of the officer and think how they would. Hope for the best, expect the worst.

As for marriage/spousal visas, it really depends on the lives you two are living. Either way, she needs to show a certain level of income based on who will be living in her household, assuming there will just be the two of you. It varies depending on the state as well and if she's in the military, which I'm assuming she isn't. A lot of people forget about this vital part of the process. If she doesn't make the mark she can use a co-sponsor. Here is the table that shows her income requirement: http://www.uscis.gov...form/i-864p.pdf She'll need tax transcripts to back this up.

My husband (he's the USC) and I went with CR-1 (get married, then sit out most of the process apart) because I was still in university and didn't want my school to be interrupted by a move to the U.S. It just made more sense for us overall, and yeah being cheaper than a K-1 helps too. You can still travel to see her while the Visa is being processed, but it gets riskier and your ties need to be pretty damn great. I haven't been to the U.S. since last summer, but he's been here once - I didn't want to risk a denial at the border.

Good luck! Once you start to read over the information in guides and government websites things become a little more clear.

CanadaABOUT POE
Porter only serves a few American cities, so if Boston, Chicago, Myrtle Beach, New York or Washington are where you want to POE you're good to go.

If you're concerned try http://www.redtag.ca for cheap flights. Pearson definitely deals with more immigration cases, and I've never heard of anyone using Bishop for their POE. You might want to call them up.

How much did they charge for the flu shot? I'm all up to date on my other vaccines, but my doctor said the same thing - flu season is winding down if not over, so there's no need. Maybe there will be :\

CanadaWhite Cheddar Mac & Cheese
Best way to make the cheese sauce is how Annie's suggests: while pasta is straining, mix everything (milk, butter, cheese) in the warm pot (I'll sometimes turn the heat on very low to keep things melting) then add the pasta and stir together. You don't get any chunks of powdered cheese and the best coverage :thumbs:

CanadaAny luck scheduling a Montreal Inerview for K-1?

I am wondering if other people trying to book an Interview in Montreal for K-1 is having any luck? If so, what date did you get through and when is your appt? I am getting SOOOO Bummed waiting!

Same here.. still waiting and checking every hour all day and until I call it a night. It's so frustrating to finally get packet 4 telling you to book it only to log in and get the same thing every day "no appointments available"!

I feel for you and everyone else in the same boat right now. I'll post when I get one and hope we are all successful soon!! :blush:

CanadaTrouble scheduling an interview in Montreal

Thank you so much for all your help! I feel a little less frustrated now that I know I'm at least trying with the right process:) Thanks again.

We are in the same boat and yes it is a lot of work to keep refreshing the page every free moment but that is our only option. I understand that yes they do pop up outside normal office hours. Someone posted the other day that she was in the site at 6:00am and got one. Randy and I take turns so that we can each have a break but we've been trying since the middle of August.

Try not to get too frustrated.. stay positive and just keep trying. This is the last step and we're almost there!! :yes:
Good luck to all of us who are waiting. :thumbs:

CanadaHow does DHL know it's free for me?

Hello all you Loving immigrants, I've been referring to this website for a while now and just joined today, I feel like an idiot for not joining years ago. Amyways, this is really great that we help each other out. I appreciate this website and the people that have answers. I'm Canadian and my fiancee is American. I'm ready to send pkt 3 out tomorrow and I'm really nervous about it but i just gotta send it and stop worrying. Question please: How does DHL know it's free? How will DHL know who I am? the CSC website doesn't say anything about it as far as i'm concerned.

Thank you in advance,
Steven.

The consulate has a contract with DHL so if you're sending there they know. I assume you have already registered with the consulate and DHL if you are sending packet 3.

Good luck with the rest of your journey. :)

CanadaCanada Immunizations

I had my Medical in August so I did not have my flu shot, I assumed it would be waived because of the timing but because I haven't had my interview yet do you think I should get it and provide proof? Do I have to get it at a certain place (ie panel physician) or can my family doctor do it? My medical paper work doesn't have the box that says I don't have all of my immunizations it has the waiver requested box checked though. i'm hoping its okay!! It sucks we can't open it to see what it says!

Your family doctor can do it and yes you need proof, you will need it when you do your AOS. If you can get it done before your interview great, just bring it (and a copy) with you.

If your interview is before the vaccine is available in your area then give the proof to Immigration with the package you hand in when you POE if you can. Keep the original though just in case you have to submit another copy with your AOS paperwork. Worse case scenario is that you have to get it as soon as you get into the U.S. and pay for it.

That is my plan anyway. I have an appt. to see my doctor before my interview and if I can't get the shot that day, I'll get a note from her confirming another appointment to have it before my POE since I don't plan to move before mid November. I may not need the note but since the time to get them starts in October, I want to make sure I cover all possible questions at the interview.

Someone else who has had a Fall interview may have other suggestions.

Good luck at your interview!
Shirley AnnFemaleCanada2011-09-29 09:55:00
CanadaCanada Immunizations

Bring a statement from the Health Department that the vaccine is not available in BC until mid-November and ask if you can get it in the US - that 'may' work but I doubt it.

Why not contact a Panel Physician in Montreal and see if they have the vaccine available? If so, when you go to Montreal for your interview see you might be able to get it from them. It will cost you but if you can get it done, you can bring the proof with you to the interview. The only other option I can see is that they will interview you but hold off on 'making' a decision to approve the visa until after you submit proof that you have had the vaccination.

The vaccine is already available here at every corner pharmacy. Maybe you can take a quick trip over the border into the US if you are close and see if you can get a shot at a US location - they cost between $15 to $20 here. That may be another possibility.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also, moving this topic to the Canada forum as there may be others there who can address this Canada specific concern. :)
My understanding is that if the interview is before the vaccine is available, as is the case with Spring and Summer appointments, your proof is sent with AOS info.
I do not believe they hold up the decision for everyone waiting for the flu vaccine to be available. If that was the case there would be a huge backlog of approvals every year.
CanadaPHOTO REQUIREMENT FOR MONTREAL INTERVIEW
"This is one of those things where you want to say it probably doesn't matter, but the only person who's opinion matters is the interviewer at the embassy. For $10 I wouldn't chance it. At the very least, it will give you some peace of mind :)"
I agree and already have it on my "To Do" list for tomorrow. :thumbs:
Thanks for the quick response. :)
Shirley AnnFemaleCanada2011-10-15 17:17:00
CanadaPHOTO REQUIREMENT FOR MONTREAL INTERVIEW
Yes- you send two with packet 3 and bring two to the interview. You also need to bring three to your medical exam. They're all 2"x2", or american size. Just ask the photographer to do them american style, most of them (at least the places I went to) know what the requirements are.
I know it feels redundant to take so many photos but it's what they ask for. Make sure the photos are within 6 months of the interview :)
My interview is next week. My photos were within the six months when I sent pkt3 and got pkt4. They are not quite 8 months now because of the long wait to get the interview. I had enough made and was going to use those because they're the same as all of the others I sent which made sense to me.
Would it be wiser to have new ones taken for the matter of 7 weeks? I look the same... no change in hair length or color etc. How strict on exactly 6 months or less?
I'm curious as to the answer but perhaps I will get new ones made before I leave.. no need to add any unnecessary "what ifs" to the mix at this stage. :bonk:
CanadaAnyone ever drove to Montreal from Toronto for Interview?
We are driving there next week from Niagara. I've heard the traffic is bad and the drivers are worse but he is used to that where he comes from. If I were going alone I would definitely take public transit.. either fly or train!! I'll let you know how the drive was when we get back next weekend.
Just my two cents but I would say that if you are going in late November the weather will be unpredictable for sure. Really anytime in November you run the risk of snow storms North of Toronto.
CanadaHow to Pay "After" Scheduling Interview in Montreal
Thanks Shirley Ann! I will do that then, pay there. I feel like I've been gathering papers and preparing for this interview my whole life. I bought a 22 pocket folder at Staples and it still wasn't enough and some things are doubled in pockets. :lol:
With Christmas just around the corner, that song keeps coming to my head ........ "Makin' a list, checkin' it twice......" Although it's been checked more than twice and I'm sure I'll be checking it many more times before the interview. I'm now glad my appointment is in the afternoon as I don't imagine we'll get any sleep the night before. :wacko:
But as you and others have said, the interview is a piece of cake if you're prepared and organized..........then we can join the rest of you and do our happy dance too! :dance:
I know what you mean. We didn't get much sleep and had the long drive back to Niagara right after the interview.. :blink:
As long as you have everything organized it's a piece of cake for sure. I had way more than I needed but if I hadn't taken it they would have asked so more is better and safer for sure. You'll be happy dancin in no time! :dance:
Enjoy Montreal if you have the opportunity to see any of it while you're there. :-)
CanadaHow to Pay "After" Scheduling Interview in Montreal
Hi Again Fellow VJers .........looking for your help once again. I feel like I'm on that show with Regis .....can't recall the name - but where you were able to "call a friend". :lol:
When I scheduled my interview (Montreal) I chose ready to schedule but didn't pick the K-1 option - so no payment was required.
Questions: 1) Can I pay the fee before my interview (Nov 4th)? If so how?
2) If not and I have to pay at the Consulate - where and how do you do this? I don't want to be delayed because of it. (btw...my interview is at 1:45).
Thanks everyone! :)
I tried to pay before I booked the interview but was unable to by phone or on the site so we paid at the interview and it was no problem at all.
When you are called to the first window to hand in your passport and photos they ask if you have paid and if not you are given a slip of paper to bring to the cashier (the same window you get your number at when you arrive on the 19th floor) to pay and get your receipt which you hand in when you are called up the second time. You have to pay in cash.. either U.S. dollars or the Cdn equivalent. We paid in U.S. dollars to keep it simple. There was no delay at all, we had time to pay and still had a 10 minute or so wait until we were called to the second portion of the process.
If your appointment is at 1:45 I wouldn't recommend going to the consulate first thing in the morning or you will likely be asked to come back later.
It really is the easiest part of this whole process, just as everyone said it would be.
Safe travels and good luck!!
I got an email from DHL (the email is from Loomis, same company) saying it was in transit on Thursday and Friday morning they called me to pick it up. CanadaSample of a 3299 form canada to u.s.
Can anyone provide a source for a 3299 form sample filled out? For one thing... am I a resident or non-resident? What is this about personal belongings being dutiable? I am confused and my mover has no kvisa experience and is no help either.
plus I will be having my husband and friend bring over a bunch of boxes and so that will require another 3299... again how to answer questions re household, personal... resident...non-resident... and how detailed does a list of the boxes have to be? should the contents of each box be listed as in : one desk lamp, one flashlight, eyeglasses, medicine, etc.
thanks anyone if there is a sample filled out or if anyone has one filled out (take out your personal stuff) ... thank you canadians who have moved to U.S. My first day here, enjoying it but so much to do !
:dance:
I checked with the border and they say just a general description of the box contents.. ie. kitchen, linen, etc. and to head the list page "used" personal and household items. I sent you the instructions for how to complete the 3299 via email.
How about if my wife has at 11am? I've read somewhere on other thread that in similar situation the person was ordered to leave the building and come back later.
Well they say arrive 20 minutes before but for an 11:00am no reason not to arrive at 9:30 or so. That way you get through security and a number before the afternoon people start arriving. I think what they take exception to is the large crown waiting at 7:30 when some of them don't have aren't scheduled for another few hours. The first people being interviewed are beginning to leave by 9:00 making more room for others. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.
Should I still arrive a bit before 7 if my interview is at 9am? Thanks!!
Well I would because your appt.is before noon. When you get to the 19th floor you get a number (around the corner from the elevator at window 14 A/B) then you are called in that order. The couple in front of us had a 9:00 appt. ours was 8:00 and they were done and out half hour before we were. They got further ahead of us in the crowd at the elevators to go up and got C4 and we got C10. By 9:00 or so the afternoon people are starting to arrive and line up outside.
Thanks! :)
It's just really frustrating, it's been 6 weeks since we've been trying. I just wish it wasn't such a random and indefinite system.
I understand completely. We started about the same time and your right, the system is very frustrating in it's design. This has by far been the most frustrating and emotionally wearing part of the process for us so far. Randy and I talked about that a few minutes ago and how hard it was getting to stay up and positive. We really feel for those who missed getting in on the openings today because of work or appointments. There should be a more humane way to handle the scheduling that would be less stressful and time consuming for the applicants.
