CanadaQuestion about Tax Rebates (GST, HST, etc)
Okay, thanks guys. Pretty much what I figured.

I'll call up the CRA to change my address and deal with the rebates.

Do I have to call The Ministry of Health to change my address as well? (I assume this will automatically show me as a non-resident and thus not covered.) I'm covered by my husband's insurance already, so thankfully that's one less thing to worry about.

CanadaQuestion about Tax Rebates (GST, HST, etc)
Hey VJ, been awhile

I was advised while doing my taxes for 2011 that there was no issue in me accepting my rebates since I still lived in Ontario in 2012 (I POE'd in June of 2012.)

I've forgotten to contact the CRA though since the new year, and the two rebates were deposited into my CIBC account on January fourth.

2013 will be the first year in which I will not be living full time in Canada.

Where should I go from here? Who else do I have to contact?

Do you guys know how OHIP works now? I've heard that after six months of non-residency, you forfeit OHIP coverage.

Any input is great, thanks!

CanadaDon't you love it when...
I'm fairly new to VJ, but here's MY good news.......

Yesterday Tim called and said he's booked a flight to come see me for a week in September. What a surprise! kicking.gif He wasn't even eligible for holidays until November, but his boss told him "Go ahead...go see her!" (I've met the boss, and he's a great guy...even got invited out to dinner with the boss and his wife last time I was at Tim's!) good.gif

Last time Tim and I touched was June 1. I had just finished spending a month in Oklahoma with him.

We haven't submitted the K-1 application yet, but we're hoping to put some stuff together while he's here.

The next couple weeks are really gonna draggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg...............

CanadaVisiting Spouse
Hey all!

I am sure this has been answered before, but I always like to get fresh insight.

My husband and I are planning to visit his parents for a few days at the end of June. They live in Florida. He has block leave from the Army then (he is stationed in TN) and will be driving in and I will be flying in from Canada. We have not as of yet submitted our I-130 application so we have no impending visa stuff on the books. I will be flying back ( have a return ticket and my airline taxi already paid for which I can show) and I will have our hotel room reservation information available.

I don't have a great deal of financial ties in terms of a lease, etc (I live at home and pay my father rent but I don't have an actual rental agreement). However I do have established credit cards, debit cars, cell phone, school loan currently being paid back and a job here.

What else is there that I can bring with me should U.S. customs be concerned that I am not coming back? Having not seen my husband since January I really do not want to mess anything up in terms of being denied entry or anything that could increase my chances of such. From your experience, what exactly should I tell the customs agents? I am visting family? I have no intention whatsoever in lying I have just always experienced that you shouldn't offer up too much to anyone unless asked as it looks rather suspicious.

Thank you for all your help :)

CanadaCustoms Form Letter
Do any of my fellow Canucks have a template for a letter from one's employer confirming my expected return back to work date to present at U.S. customs? My employer wants to know exactly to put in the letter.

Is it also advisable for them to print it with company letter-head?

Any other sort of guidelines I should have them follow (pertinent information, etc)?

Thanks!

CanadaProabably a rather random question
Hey All!

So I want to send my hubby some of my kitchen uquipment. Much of it has been gifts his family has sent me over the past year or so for birthday and Christmas and since I live at home with my father who has a fully-equipped kitchen, it is just hiding away in packing boxes or my closet. Since we have an apartment of our own now where he lives and I would like to have my preferred arsenal of tools when I visit since he is rather clueless about buying kitchen tools. I have been contemplating sending a few boxes over the next few months (about $100 worth of stuff each time), but I am reticent to incur massive amounts of charges in postage. Does anyone know of more cost-efficient ways to get my stuff there? I can carry a bunch of my stuff in my suitcase on my upcoming visit, but things like a hand-mixers and a small food processor does not seem feasible, unless I check a second suitcase (which at $25 is certainly an option) and risk damage in-flight.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

CanadaOntario Long Form Birth Certificate
Excellent. I thought I had done everything correctly, but my father likes to fear monger everything I try and do, so I had to check. Should trust my instincts more.

Thank you for the quick replies!

That is the exact place I ordered mine from, it arrived on a yellow large sheet, signed, sealed and with a letter head type thing. Lists my parents and all the info that is not listed on my mini card one. They want the long form that has all the information on it. Parents, place, dates, names and signatures etc.

That's what this one has. Thank you!

CanadaOntario Long Form Birth Certificate
Perhaps someone can ease my paranoia here.

Last year I requested and paid for a certified copy of my long-form birth certificate from the Office of the Registrar General here in Ontario. At the top it says " Certified a TRue Photostatic Print of a Record and then below is the copy of the original Statement of Live Birth. With a seal stamped into the paper at the bottom. We are sending a copy of it with our I-130 since some people are getting RFE's asking for the beneficiary's BC, so I went out today to have it photocopied so I can have the original certified copy with me when we get further along in the process.

My father was with me when I had it copied and started saying this doesn't look like what he thought long-form birth certificate. This was the only long-form BC option I was offered from here: https://www.orgforms...eForms/start.do

Is this theversion of my BC I will need to send to the NVC when the time comes or do I need to get something else entirely? I know my small blue BC used for most other things is not what will be asked for but I am a bit confused now.

CanadaAnyone else interview wed? montreal

I wish, but I can relate to being a nervous wreck! I'm trying not to freak out about getting that far without time running out on our I-129F. Montreal just got the petition 4/19 and it expires 7/13. Complicating matters is the fact that my fiance put out to have his passport renewed (he paid to expedite!) on 3/20 since it wasn't going to meet the time requirements for expiration, and so far still no passport. Once you submitted your Packet 3 were you able to schedule an interview fairly quickly? As far as the nervousness, deep breaths, don't panic, and hopefully the worst is behind you. Best of luck with the interview!

hi evilsquee.....unfortunately you can't book an interview until you receive notice that your packet 3 contents were successful....and you receive notice of packet 4, which gives permission to book medical and interview. sometimes interviews take a while to book as they only release a certain amount of dates and times at a time....this itself can take a while. dont worry about passing the end date on your I 129F...I dd....and it happens. i sent the consulate an email and they replied with an okay....with no expiry date.....i think you have a year to get things rolling from the initial date of the I 129, but don't quote me. i also had to get passports renewed and got them back within a week! you also need to register with dhl for your visa return....all this info comes in your packet 3 instructions.

check out more on this site....particularly the pinned posts on the first page of this regional discussion....they contain loads of info to help you out.

good luck....and take deep breaths yourself...you'll need it when completing the forms online....I found this the most frustrating part!!

Canadabooking K1 interview

They changed it. You used to be able to pay at interview but seems recently they made it so you cannot book the interview without paying online. Thats why you cannot find it in " ready to schedule " like you could a few months back.

Thanks Inky...now this is all making sense....but it does put a damper on my booking both my son's and my interview as there are no refunds to canceled appointments should he decide he would rather get his education here in Canada. I wish he'd make up his mind!

I can totally appreciate why the Consulate would want to stream line their operations and make visa interview payments only by internet. I'm a plastic girl myself and hate having cash on hand. I will let Ralyse know about this so she can update the "interview" section of her very informative post.

On another note Inky...can you help to confirm something else...how long does a k2 visa have before they must enter the US? I believe I read ONE year after date of issue but can't seem to find where I read that.

Thanks.

Canadabooking K1 interview

if you are a K1 you have to click on Immigrate , not the non-immigrate....you will then see the K1. I made this mistake and saw all those other things you have listed. Give that a try. GOOD LUCK.

Yes, I'm there now and have to pay the MRV fee right now...which is what I don't want to do....and if I don't may via credit card or debit with Scotia I cannot proceed.

Apparently others have booked the other way and have paid cash the day of the interview...(you usually have to wait a bit longer to get an interview date)...I don't want to pay cash now....but I do want to schedule an interview.

Canadabooking K1 interview
Hey everyone.....think I'm finally ready to book my interview in MTL...yahoo!

however....

I don't want to book Permanently Immigrate to the US (Fiance K1/K2) as you need to pay upfront on credit card or debit with Scotia Bank.....I'd rather book Permanently Immigrate to the US (ready to schedule) and pay in person as my 18 yr old son who is supposed to start university in Sept may decide at the last minute to withdraw his visa application and stay here in Canada to attend unviersity....and not wanting to be out his $240 USD on my credit card I figure booking "ready to schedule" is probably the best way to go

but

when trying to book this way, I am asked "Visa Class" with no option for K1/K2...the selections are:
cert religious workers
DV
E1
E2
E3
E3others
E4
E5
F1
F2A
F2B
F3
F4
IR

I'm confused as to which category I should select.....can anyone help.

Much appreciated!

CanadaBorder Crossing question

Lewiston sucks!! I always cross at the Peace Bridge. I agree with Udella. And I wouldn't worry about it, either. You're visiting your parents and you're returning to Canada. You've not done anything illegal.

Hear Ye Hear Ye.....Lewiston is horrible for traffic, for line ups, for everything! I find it so much easier to use the Peace Bridge.

Yah, the officers ask questions but they have too. I've never been grilled and I've been doing the regular crossing bit since 2004 and never ever had any problems....and coming home is a breeze too!

CanadaMoving issue

air lines are making big $$ on bags!! I belive (check air canada's website) that ur only allowed 1 free checked bag!! And with that 1 bag it can only weigh so much! And they can be VERY picky! If the limit is 50lbs they mean 50 lbs!! I have been 2 lbs over and had to move stuff around. So not only is it the amount of bags, but how much each bag weighs!! But check air canada website! All airlines have similar baggage limits, but I avoid Air Canada like the plague--especially with their labor turmoil!!

Hi Elisinha,

Flames offers some good advice....however I know from travelling with AC (and have a close friend who work for them who flies me free or next to free) that first, second and so on bags are charged. The first bag is $25. second is $35. There are size/linear restrictions (and weight restrictions) that you need to keep in mind if not using 'regular' suitcases. If you are going to exceed the first 2, I'd contact the airline just to be sure they can take your extra bags....as sometimes on charters (which probably isn't the case) they don't allot extra baggage....you don't want that bag arriving after you, especially since this is your POE.

AC, along with many others, are adhering to the maximum weight restrictions and will make you shuffle things around to be within the weight restrictions.....however, remember you can pay additional for oversized and overweight bags.....and the surcharge might be worth it to avoid a 3rd bag!!!

As for AC turmoil, my friend assures all is well there and its business as usual....

Good luck!

And, best to be safe than sorry; I'm thinking its better to postpone the interview.

I think you can only reschedule an interview ONE time. And now you MUST go.

Can someone confirm Kaulie's reply for me please....Thanks!

Also, double and triple thanks to all my friends on VJ who offer their advice!!!!! You have really made this process so much easier....this process is so much more complicated than one initially thinks!

I'm going to try to see if I can get an answer in writing, so if its a 'yes, you can cross without activating the visa' I could use this as proof to the customs agent should I need to show my passport, get questioned. and turned away.

The last poster, CdnMom, brings something else to mind.....my son who would be entering after me on his K2....would he also have the same issues....that being, he potentially could have a problem crossing the border prior to activating his K2 visa should he cross to shop, have dinner or do an airport run?????

Thanks a kazillion!!!

Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3
Hey everyone...I'm happy for GitmeOuttaHere and all but I'm still looking for answers to my situation!!!!

Can we get back on track?

Nexus might be safe but is it????? I don't want mights!

I've used it crossing by land and air in Toronto and Peace Bridge loads of times (and so has he with and without me)....never a problem....in fact sometimes, I'm just waved on. But now that I'm further into the process will it be safe for me to use without activating the K!? Is Nexus linked with USCIS?

And, back to my 2 questions:

1) Is there anywhere I can call or write or email to get confirmation on this?

2) If I do reschedule this interview, it would need to be postponed until Sept. (as I have August plans to travel to the US as well).... Do they offer interview dates that far in advance? I recall someone in this post saying you can only reschedule once....and if dates are not offered that far in advance then how do I go about rescheduling for a September date? ....I can't let the June 18th lapse?????

Thanks.

Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3
Thinking now from everyone's comments that I should reschedule the interview...ahhhh!

But to vent!!!! Personally, on a side note.....I think this is kind of crappy especially if you live in a border town and cross often to go over for dinner, go shopping or do the airport drop off and pick up....and essentially that means should he fly here to visit me he cannot fly into Buffalo as I would risk activating my POE to get him from the airport....he'd have to fly into Toronto which we all know is bigger bucks!!

But, I have 2 questions....

Remember this is country specific.

Anyways to the OP - it could work out but it might be close. I had just about the same amount of time as you did to get my K-1 back before my leave date. Mine almost didn't work out but I got my passport back JUST in time to pick up my mover truck and leave the day we had planned.

Just a heads up - July 3 traveling is a freaking zoo!!!! last min rush travelers for July 4th celebrations.

Thanks for your words of wisdom Inky and Flames9_RN.....but the July 3 trip isn't for my POE....as I understand you are permitted to venture into the US after your visa has been issued. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Since I'll be flying out of YYZ...I'll be using Nexus and there will be no face to face with a customs officer. There won't be an issue flying out of Reno as there is no customs there....and once on Canadian soil again at YYZ, I'll be using Nexus again to return. So, unless Nexus red flags me where sirens and whistles blow from the computerized kiosok, no one will even be seeing that there is a K1 visa inside my passport. Of course, should I have to use my passport, do I not have the right to declare this is NOT my POE but a visit while I wrap things up in Canada and showing proof I have ties to Canada...eg upcoming doctors appt, house for sale, etc?

As for travelling on the 3rd...yah, it can be a zoo but we're both used to travelling on holidays...this is the only time we can see each other!!! Argh, but those days will be gone once were together....I long to celebrate our birthdays together...and other holidays like Christmas AND New Years at the same time!! Ahh, it will be so nice...

Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3
I finally got my act together....house is almost ready for listing....school year is almost a wrap.....(man, this is a BIG job!) so I booked the interview (yahoo!).....but date pickin's were slim....May 31st (too soon (I want to see my fam doc for vaccination update)) and June 18th were the first dates available....so I grabbed the 18th.

But I have travel to see the man on July 3rd! I can fly out as I have Nexus but I need my passport to return!!!

I'm really putting all eggs in one basket and expecting to have my passport/visa back by July 3rd....am I pushing it????? Thinking 2 weeks should suffice....but we all are familiar with Murphy's Law. I really wanted something the previous week.....and am thinking about rescheduling with hopes that a date for this week (being June 11) is released. Going to book the medicals tomorrow....and not thinking securing a date for this will be difficult since they do medicals in TO every Mon Tues and Wed.

Can anyone give insights as to timelines? I saw the timeline reference tracker for MTL passport/visa returns but I'm leery of relying on that.

Again, thanks everyone!

CanadaMontreal Interview Review

I stayed at Zero1.

Check Google... "hotels near 1155 rue st alexandre montreal" or whatever the address is.

Or go to any travel site and you can map them there and also find deals.

There was a Travelodge across the street from Zero1 - about an 8 minute walk from the consulate.

And, was it reasonable? I'm trying to find a room with 2 beds (not a suite) that's reasonably priced and is bugfree. Did some research today and some hotels are sold out for the date....others only have suites available...kind of seems foolish to arrive around midnight and checking out at 6am for a suite!!!!

I will be driving so I have a car that will need parking!!

Thanks for helping.

CanadaCan Interview Date Be Changed
Hi,

I know the CR1 interview process is different in that you folks are given a date whereas K1 chose a date. I'll share my experience with you.

I booked June 18th and then realized I could not keep it and could not interview over the summer months so I needed to schedule one in Sept.... so when I went into the system to change my dates it would not let me. I tried again and still the same problem...so that's when I called Montreal directly and had to listen to the automated voice and press a bunch of numbers BUT I did get a live person who changed my date, cancelled my old appt, and sent me both confirmation and new appt emails within minutes. The girl I spoke with was super helpful :)

Here's the number I called.

CanadaK1 and AP...can i return to Cda to work for 4 months?
I'm so glad i contacted my pension plan and made the inquiry....

I found out that in order to receive a pension i had to retire on or after my 50 birthday, otherwise I would have to cash out and receive lump sum (what they project is a cumulative value) which doesn't come anywhere close to the pension I could receive if I waited it out.

As if the K1 process wasn't enough....now this! But, I am glad I researched as I would hate to do something illegal.

#######, this info really throws a kink into the plans.

Upon further consultation, as it turns out, I would have to take a leave of absence for about 9 months, then return to work put in 4 months then retire. During those 9 months I would POE, marry, apply for AOS and begin the EAP and AP process. Then after the 9 month I would return back to Canada to put in those required 4 months, then retire. But, I am not sure this is legal and permissible.

I have looked on VJ but can't find any info about my particular situation.

Advice is appreciated.

CanadaNeed clarification on photo requirements
I did them myself and downloaded them onto the ds 160....then i printed them and i thought they were awesome, so i sent them in with packet 3. got a email back saying the background was too greyish.....yet the website states white or grey background is acceptable.....so I the next time I went and got them done at costco. be careful where you go though and ask to have them redone if you suspect the quality if off. I got my passports re-done this year and i thought the pictures were a tad dark but they were accepted by the passport office...the girl never questioned them.....well you should see my passport...really dark....i'm sure if these were the ones i submitted with my packet 3 they would have asked for additional.. I would not advise getting all 7 done at once....things happen and if you get an rfe or things delay you, the pictures could be too old....remember they are all date stamped on the back. I know its a pain....I;m doing the process with kids too.

CanadaSending Packet 3 to MTL via Xpresspost
submitting packets via expresspost is still acceptable....on the form log your MTL #....and all your return address particulars.

you need to reference your MTL # on all correspondence.

i packet 3 i included a letter outlining the contents of package which had my MTL #, both my name and my fiance name, my email address and other contact info and I also included the NVC log number on it too....just to be sure.

I did not have a problem and this was in may 2012

dhl is out of town for me so it was easier to pay and use expresspost.

CanadaHow Efficent is Montreal these days?
took me one week from the time packet 3 was sent to received packet 4 via email...from there you book and pay online (ONLY) now. you cannot pay at interview anymore... you need to register with DHL with CSC while booking your interview. from there you print out your confirmation copies and book medical ....you will need to bring these confirmation copies to the medical and interview....if you don't you cannot get inside the consulate for the interview....i'd printed out 2 copies just to be safe. when i booked my interview there was approx a 25 day wait.....but that was back in may. not sure what the summer months are like....i understand MTL consulate operates as usual but with staff taking holidays they may reduce the number of interview slots. you want to book the 8am interview as there has been talk that the guards may turn you away if you arrive too early. when i booked there was 8am was the only time offered.

good luck!Posted Image
