Philippinescan someone tell me if I broke an unwritten rule?
When i first started talking to my fiance, we've already talked about how society has stereotyped people dating foreigners getting $$ sent.
I think your girl's pride was just challenged, that's all. When my fiance bought me a book online that I needed when I was still preparing for my Nclex exam(this was before we met) I felt so embarrassed. I really did not want him to spend more than he does for phonecalls and he just bought me that book. I appreciated his thoughtfulness but yes, my pride was challenged lol i come from a well-off family and a LOT of times I meet people asking me if he sends money and even have the tenacity to ask how much! lol

Before my fiance left, he also told me he wanted to send me some money every payday, either to spend or save. I kept telling him not to do that because I can just ask my parents for money, and he knows that but much like you, he wants me to have some money to go around.

That's just what it is with money and filipinas i guess. I still feel embarrassed when we talk about money coz much like your fiancee, I never want for anyone to think I'm taking advantage. But, instead, I set my pride aside, and appreciated his thoughtfulness. It's good to have money set aside anyway, plus as a previous post stated, we women can get shirts/clothing for our man lol

so yeah, just tell her to set it aside for rainy days or the sort, or she can have herself pampered as what my fiance would say lol
i do think though she's just overly reacting to the whole thing, there's no need for the temper tantrums lol at least you're quite thoughtful

PhilippinesCalling Manila Embassy @ +3012000 from skype isnt working! HELP
you can only get thru them through a PLDT landline or Smart landline(if that's what they meant with smart phone) we only have PLDT and globe lines in my city..anyway, back then, i actually tried going to RCPI to call the USEM, i was told that only PLDT can get thru.. and our phoneline was pretty crappy because of the weather..but even through the static i got through and the person whom i talked to on the phone was great.. i actually called USEM 4 times, 1st was to ask if i can set an interview date but was unsure so i just gave her my info; 2nd time was to ask when would be the soonest date, 3rd phonecall to set the actual interview and the 4th one was to make sure my visa was ok since the envelope was precut on the corner.. and i kept calling on different dates, so i think you'll be able to talk to someone nice.. all of those i got a hold of were nice smile.gif and God bless on the interview smile.gif

btw, call them around 8 am-6 pm manila time, monday-friday
if there's a national or US holiday, you'll be sent to the answering machine

US Embassy and Consulate Discussioninterview question for people who passed already
QUOTE (SamAndDorothy @ Sep 17 2009, 06:24 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Do they keep all the pics and all the stuff you bring? Reason i ask cause i would like my birth and her birth cerificate. If not, i would need her to go ahead and get another one before she leaves to come here.

Thanks in advance!

they will keep her birth certificate on file and her cenomar, and NBI clearance, they wont ask for yours though so no need to worry about that; when i had my interview, the consul asked me for my name, birthdate, parents' names, to countercheck my documents, i brought along my fiance's birth certificate but they ddnt ask for that.

So just tell your fiance to get a few more copies of her birth certificate from the NSO as they will issue a few more copies without any problems smile.gif God bless her interview smile.gif

and oh yeah, do tell her to separate her DS-156, 156K, and 157 as those are the 1st 3 documents she will submit as soon as she gets inside the building to get her priority number smile.gif

during the 1st interview, they will ask for:

1. birth certifcate, cenomar, NBI clearance - they will ask her the basic information, name, bday, parents' names, if she's been married before, where she was born.

2. affidavit of support, bank statements, W-2s, 1040 - they ddnt ask for my fiance's employment letter as he is in the military, and i ddnt have 1040s either but that was ok, one girl i met there doing the K-1 visa too ddnt have any W-2s but she passed so either one will do smile.gif

they will also ask for the fiance's full name, date of birth, address, work, and if you have any dependents

P.S. just block out the account numbers as they will keep the bank statements, or use a marker to block em out smile.gif

3. they asked for proof of meeting, proof of ongoing relationship- i gave her the copies of receipts from when he was here, i had only about 3, then 1 boarding pass from manila, she asked for photos, i gave her 20 (they Will return that when they give her the pink slip smile.gif

i also gave her the emails, and skype call records- they don't return those

so tell her to separate all those documents together as they will ask for them in that order smile.gif

hope that helps happy.gif

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionOn RED Flag taking Medical..(Females Only)
i read on here a while back that you will be told to come back again after your period. from what i experienced during the medical, you only need to be not having your period on the 1st day, im thinking it has a lot to do with the derobing part, you have to lie on the examining bed whilst the doctor assess your whole body, and yes, they even look at the butt, so common sense would be gross to have the period on that day lol..
but the 2nd day only consists of the vaccinations so it doesnt matter if your period starts

mAYbe you can try the DOS hotline, otherwise try contacting USCIS. If your file has left NVC they will actually tell you when it was sent.

Our file was sent to the embassy about a few days it was recieved by NVC when i called it had been three days since they sent it off so they would be able to tell you if has alreay forwarded to the embassy.

when did you get your NOA2? sometimes NVC receives, meaning opened your package, a few days after they got it from USCIS. But if it has already been 30 days post NOA2, then I think you should be concerned already as that is an awfully long time already.. OUr NOA2 was july 27, on the 28th NVC received our case and was sent off to the embassy on the 31st of July; but the embassy received it on august 6

btw, NVC will give you a case number that starts with MNL(manila) and that is a very important number, to schedule yoru interview and even during the medical exam... NVC will have a record that they can look even after they send it out

US Citizenship General DiscussionAM i eligible for the 319(b) naturalization?

To be honest with you, I have no idea about your traffic citation and its impact on your case (have never been in simillar situation), BUT, from reading online on different forums generally it shouldn't be a biggie. Just list it there where it asks on the application form, and then when you are called for the interview have your paperwork ready with you, just in case.

For the address thing, I sent mine to Vermont and it was processed at the National Benifit center and ended up at Nebraska lol, so cut the story short and send it to Nebraska, so you can save some waiting time. As they have to do all the final checks and immigration background checks before transfering your case to the local office. And at the same time it's the best cause they can provide you with detailed info about your case and where it stands when you call the military help line.

oh ok.. so I would need to mention my traffic violation then? oh well, anyway, ok so Nebraska it is.. lol i saw that pdf from that website with vermont so i guess I should just do yours then send it to nebraska.. when you sent yours, did you send it to this:

Vermont Service Center
75 Lower Welden Street
St. Albans, VT 05479
Attn: Expedite Naturalization – 319(b)

there's this too: from that website (
http://www.hoodmwr.com/acs/Media/Program_folder/IRO/Naturalization/319b_FAQ.pdf )

USCIS/ District Office #7
2675 Prosperity Avenue
Fairfax, VA 22031
Attn: 319(b) Case – EYES ONLY

but that information could be outdated lol coz I just saw that from a previous post.. so who knows :) I looked at the USCIS site, and it was just for the regular N-400

US Citizenship General DiscussionAM i eligible for the 319(b) naturalization?
oh, I was researching too.. you should to send it to nebraska, and i read on this site : http://www.hoodmwr.c...on/319b_FAQ.pdf that i send it to vermont.. should I do vermont instead or nebraska.. which will be faster?

And one more thing: Copy of your spouse's "Command sponsored" military orders to the overseas assignment.

I do have that too, I have the copies when they issued that for my husband. So I guess that wil be enough to show I can stay here legally after naturalization then. :) And I talked to my husband to talk to his CO, but he said the CO will be on leave so the acting CO will likely make that for him instead.

BTW<
You must meet the applicable naturalization requirements outlined in sections 312 and 316 of the INA and Title 8, Code of Federal Regulations (physical presence is not required).
what are those requirements under the 312 and 316?

US Citizenship General DiscussionAM i eligible for the 319(b) naturalization?
a friend of mine said there is a US consulate here in okinawa island so we could just go there too for the fingerprinting otherwise yes, the MPs would be a good thing.
By the way, I have had a citation from the MPs for a driving accident here. Do you think that will halt my application? I mean a month after I got here, i tried learning how to drive for the 1st time, I had my learner's permit I was going to have my driving class a week later but I got into an accident and we learned I wasn't supposed to drive off-base but we live offbase and I hit our neighbor's gate. So the japanese police here did an investigation on that, I had an interrogation done and all that since it raised questions about me driving without a license.I didn't know the learner's permit issued on base was only for onbase driving. We have yet to wait what goes on with the Japanese prosecutor, anyway My question is, will I need a police clearance? will that whole traffice violation affect me or something? I've never been into anything like that, so I'm scared it might affect this. ^_^ thanks!

US Citizenship General DiscussionAM i eligible for the 319(b) naturalization?
Hi,
somebody told me to look up the 319(b) naturalization. As much as it is all very exciting for me. This is my situation, I entered the US thru a K-1 visa, did the AOS, got approved for the GC feb. 2010.
My husband is stationed in okinawa, japan since august 2008 . I have command sponsorship and has been here since february 19, 2010. We do have a US embassy on Naha city here on okinawa island. (so i think I can go there for fingerprinting)

I read some of the posts and I noticed they have been legal permanent residents for more than a year. Anyway, My questions are:

1) is it too soon to start gathering for it now and apply ASAP even if my 2-yr green card had just been approved since february 2010?

2) My husband doesn't leave until march 2012, do you guys think I will have enough time to be eligible for this:
The term “regularly stationed abroad” means that the overseas employment contract for your spouse clearly shows that your spouse’s employment will continue abroad for at least one year after the date that you will be naturalized.

how long could it take? I want to apply ASAP because we leave march 2012, and I'm afraid what if they wil deny me because of that since we'll go back to the US after his DEROS(date of rotation)

3)what should my requirements be?

4)what address must I send my application once we have everything done ? someone told me about fairfax, VA for a one day test taking, oath taking.. will I have to fly to the US to do that by then?
and oh, this may be a stupid question but is there also an interview for naturalization?

thank you so much! ^_^

US Citizenship General Discussionquestion on filling out n-400 form for 319(b)

ok, I will do that, I guess I will have to ask them to mail it. How long do you think will that take for them to send me a copy?

what address do i put on part 4? our physical address, the japanese one? because it says "do not write a PO box"
we live in an APO, AP and I was planning on just writing that but now, I'm not sure.

do you know how I can get a hold of tax returns copies? we did it thru turbotax and when we looged bakc in, it doesn't show us anything anymore. They didn't save it or something/. SO we don't have a copy pf our 2009 tax returns with me as his spouse on there.

US Citizenship General Discussionquestion on filling out n-400 form for 319(b)
HI! I amplanning on applying for the 319(b) and is on the process of gathering all my stuff ^_^
i got my GC from doing AOS from K-1.
I have A few questions though
1) is it correct that I put my married name as my legal name on the N400?
or will I have to put the married name on the part D. name change?
it may seem like a stupid question lol but I just wanna make sure :)

I am from the philippines and we're used to chaning our names when we get married. Our maiden name becomes the middle name after marriage and taking up the husband's last name.
for example: name when single: TRIXIE PAZ CRUZ
married: TRIXIE CRUZ SMITH

my military ID has my new married name, and the new married name is also the one on my GC. I have no other ID with the new married name except those two. should I consider my married name as my legal name now?

2) what should I put on the part 1-D? EXPEDITED NATURALIZATION 319(b) ? will that do?

3) i should check "no" on part 3-H, right? just making sure

4) On part 8-A, should I put one? this is my 1st marriage, and this is my husband's 1st one too.. so on part 8-G, should I put one or zero?

5) part 10.C 14. my husband filed for our tax returns, thru married filing jointly, so should I click no? The thing is, I do not even know if and when we would get a copy of our tax returns, it would show me as a resident, since we couldn't remember and my husband said, that all's that he remembers is just writing my name as his spouse and my social, and since i'm not working, i am not earningany income.

6) 10-D I'm not sure which ones to check no or yes to.. this is my case:
I got into a traffic accident and was given a citation by the military police, so I know I will have to be honest with USCIS explaining my citation from the MPs.
It was my 1st time driving, i had a learner's permit which I did not know was only for on-base driving only, since we lived offbase, i tried practicing driving with my husband in the car, panicked when doing a Left turn, crashed into the neighbor's gate. So since I got into an accident offbase, they provoked my driving privileges, giving me a 6-month citation.

Thanks so much! I really want to be able to answer everything correctly to avoid RFEs pr anything of the sort :)

US Citizenship General Discussionn-400 form questions
Hi, I have asked questions on a thread but i guess no one seems to notice it or i'm not lucky enough for people to read it lol
i'm applying for INA 319 b

PART 4 address
1) part A. should I write our actual physical japanese address, coz we live offbase or can I just write the APO, AP ?

2) part B. CARE OF -can I just write my husband;s name on it?
3) part C. daytime phone number - can i write our japanese mobile numbers?

PART 7 travel outside US
I am overseas but on command sponsorship thru military because of my husband

1) what should I write on the trip questions? I have been outside of the US since february 18 and had only taken one trip to come over here in Japan..
so should i start counting the days i've been away now?

part 10. affiliations
1)8 A. i have volunteered in the american red cross here on base so should i check yes, and then just list that on B?

2) 10 C (continuous residence)
13-14 I don't remember if we had put me as nonresident or resident when we filed for the tax returns since
when we did that I didn't receive my GC on the mail yet.
we don't have a copy of the tax returns since we couldn't print it back then and somehow on turbotax we don't see it saved up

part 10 d. good moral character
1) question 15, should I check yes on it because a few months ago i got into a car accident and ended up getting a citation for driving offbase.
2) question 16. The MPs were the ones who gave me the citation, so I should click "yes"?
3) question 17. I only had the citation for 6 months, so i guess it should be "NO"?

***should I include a copy of the citation that they gave me? when I gather the package when I send it in?

part 10. H oath requirements
1) should I click yes on all of it?

Thanks! ^_^

US Citizenship General DiscussionAnybody else heard the rumor...?

If I gave all of the differences between a military marriage and a civillian marriage we'd be here all day, so I'll just stick to a couple of basics:

* Not being able to put down roots ... I've had 4 addresses in under 2 years.

* With constant moving, the chances of having a career of our own is severely affected.

* Birthdays/Christmas/New Year ... even giving birth to children, is something we know will sometimes be done alone.

* We're bound by OPSEC (operational security) because WE live our day to day lives with more information than what a civillian will EVER see on CNN etc.

* We live with the fear of our spouses returning as nothing but "bits in a bag" ... how often do you discuss your possible death with your family??

* The percentage of military members returning from deployment disabled/limbs missing/PTSD is higher than you can imagine.

* And of course, the big one ... while you snuggle up to your spouse tonight, take a moment to think of those military spouses out there who for next year will cry themselves to sleep ... alone.

Some will say that being married to a military member is a choice ... good for them, I happen to love my Husband, so there is NO choice.

You want there to be a bit of fairness in the processes between a civillian going through the immigration process and a someone married to the military? ... so would I ... tell you what, pack up your belongings, live out of a suitcase for 2 years, and spend a year apart from your spouse every other year, during which time your spouse is dodging bullets and IED's ... and don't forget to kiss your spouse goodbye first 'cause you may never see him/her again ... now, that's what I would call a bit of fairness!

A passport on a plate is the least the government could do for a military spouse.

you could not have worded it better.. it's true the military does so much. If it weren't for the veterans who gave their lives up for the freedom everyone enjoys.
And yes, i agree there are so many times you'd have to be alone, can't just go on vacation because something comes up. Everyday you have to pray a little bit more for your spouse's protection. I think it's just that they give the opportunity for expedited naturalization, it's already stress enough for one spouse to be sent to different assignments, at least the whole immigration will be dealt with and not be an issue with moving, PCSing and all that stuff. As my hubby would say, this immigration stuff is actually more stressful though especially when something comes up with the RFEs or when USCIS just feels like you need to be tugged a lil bit more.

I can't say for those who are in uniform who were only heartbroken as a price of citizenship. It lies greatly on the kind of person you get in a relationship with, citizenship aside there are so many ways people can screw you over. But it does not mean that male/females go for the person in uniform because immigration will be easier. People might think that way, but safety and the life of your loved one is so much more important than citizenship in any given day.

US Citizenship General Discussiontax returns with unmarried name on it

Wife used that maiden-married format name throughout the entire USCIS process, that was the tradition in her country, but found its too confusing here for all of our computer records, even the phone book. Her maiden name put her under the "T's", married name under the "D's". She dropped her maiden on the N-400, wasn't even considered a name change by the USCIS, no problem with that, nor for her new SS card, nor with the IRS. After we did that, her name follows mine in the phone book.

What gets a bit messy is providing a paper trail for names. When she petitioned for her son that has her previous marriage name on his birth certificate and her application with her new married name on it, as proof that she is the mother, had to provide proof of her maiden name, her birth certificate, her first marriage certificate, her divorce, then our marriage certificate. The USCIS does have all this stuff, but you always have to send it in again.

oh wow, i guess when it comes down to it, i'll drop my maiden name then lol don't want to deal with so much changing middle names, i can drop my middle name though right? it's weird to carry my mom's maiden name as my middle name lol i wonder if when i would apply for dual citizenship in philippines they would make my maiden name my middle name.. oh well

I agree with a previous poster. WHY are you applying for citizenship when you were only made a conditional LPR in Feb 2010?? You need to ROC first (I-751) before Feb 2012 but after Dec 2011, and you're only eligible for citizenship after 3 years of marriage (minus 90 days) which seeing you got married Oct 2009 is still July 2012. You have at LEAST 2 years to go still and a bunch of paperwork in the middle before Naturalisation.

thank you so much for all the answers. I read up on so many threads here regarding the name change, for some it wasn't questiond because they said maybe it had something to do with the IOs maybe used to the whole thing because there are so many filipinos and mexican in the area. I was so confused when I looked my Marriage certificate and it still said my maiden name on it, I know I don't want to undergo the whole judicial oath, so I guess I will have to see on the interview. I have been really stressing out on what I should do about that, and what I write on the legal name, so many people who had done the naturalization whom I've asked said it wasn't asn issue with them, so i guess it's more like dependent on the IO if he/she makes a fuss out of it... I wonder if the ones from fairfax, VA will.. I am gonna specify I want my interview to be done there when I apply because they are used to the military expedited naturalization.

I know i was supposed to do the ROC 1st, so i actually didn't care about the naturalization yet until someone told me to look into it because of my husband's overseas miltary orders. So I'm just praying everything goes through well with this so we will say good bye to immigration then lol

If you just received your green card in Feb. of this year, how is it that you are able to apply for citizenship? I believe you will not be eligible until the end of 2012. Maybe I am missing something

I am trying to apply for the article 319b of the INA, it doesn't require the 3 yr because of my husband being stationed overseas :)

Did you change your name legally when you got married? If yes, then you may need to see what you should do to get it corrected (if you even have to). Else, there is no written law that the name needs to be changed upon marriage. In my opinion, I think showing married filing jointly and showing that both of you still "donate" to uncle Sam, then that covers 99.9% of their approval of your tax returns.

after the wedding i started using my married name, and adopted the Philippine way of name change, drop the mother's maiden name(which is our middle names before marriage), and the father's last name takes its place and finally my last name is my husband's.

It is kind of a cultural thing but it's an automatic change and very much like a rule in philippines. I thought it was like that in the world lol i never heard about the names and all not until we got married. My husband said I can keep my maiden name but i want to just keep my new name now.. will that be a problem during interview and oath? i don't really wanna do the whole judiscial oath which could drag on for so long

I am envious again, only four months from the time you sent in your AOS to receiving your green card, was more like a year for us.

I am up in the air about if a woman really has to use her married name period, many of the women doctors around here stick with their maiden name because it would cost a fortune to get all of their certificates and licenses changed to their married name. Even use their maiden name on their passport, SS cards, and drivers' license.

Is there a law that says you have to use your married name? I really don't know. Even filing a joint return, can use any a different last name on the 1040. To change your maiden name to your married name, have to bring in your marriage certificate. Anyway, you have three more years to find out.

lol thanks! ^_^ i actually thought it took forever for AOS lol coz we got RFEs but after the CSC transfer it went on so smoothly lol

I am so happy I am finally able to get answers lol I am trying to process paperwork for the INA 319b so immigration wont be such a hassle anymore especially being stationed overseas. i wanna say goodbye to immigration and get my blue lol

anyway, our marriage certificate shows my name as maiden name still.. was too excited/anxious during wedding day that i forgot to bring it up with the pastor lol
i did read different threads here about the name change ordeal some had no issue, others did..so i'm not sure lol

Hi i am in the process of putting together my n400 application and
i just noticed that our first evern tax return that was done as married filing jointly,
shows my unmarried name, I forgot why that was, my husband filed it thru turbotax,
will that be an issue with my n400 application? I mean on the n400 form I put my married name as my legal name..
coz it's what I use now and my forms of identification for it are my mil ID and GC so I figured that would be my legal name already right?

thanks
