Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionK-2 Biometrics
Our daughter got her "Verification of inclusion of a dependent in filing of form I-751" letter first, then my wife got her I-751 Receipt Notice, then she received her biometrics appointment notice. We haven't received a biometric appointment notice for our K-2 daughter, nor a separate receipt. Normal? My wife's biometric appointment is on Monday, and the letter doesn't mention our daughter.

Africa: Sub-SaharanLaptop power cord while in Africa
D'oh! I wish I'd known that before I spent 300+ dirhams on a surge protector!! Well, you live and you learn!

QUOTE (We_Destiny @ Feb 10 2009, 04:27 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Also, becasue a laptop stores the power on the battery, it is usually not affected by power surges or power (generator) cutting on and off like a desktop. You can use an adapter purchased in U S or a surge protector purchased in Nigeria that has the proper plug. Or if you layover in in Europe buy the proper connecting cord. The cord coming from the computer with the box attached remains the same only the cord that goes into the socket changes, and can be purchased at the airport or on line. This is the surge protector I use.

I hope this helps.

Africa: Sub-SaharanLaptop power cord while in Africa
Not sure what the current is in Senegal, but I lived in Morocco (also a former French colony, so maybe similar to Senegal?) and just used the little adapter thing which changes the shape of the prongs (the kind you buy at RadioShack or wherever). Most computers and ipods nowdays self - convert, so you don't need anything fancy. Just change the prongs with the adapter thing (I can never remember which is an adapter and which is a converter/transformer, I mean you just need the simple, cheap thing). When you get there, you may want to invest in a surge protector, because the electricity can go on and off a lot in Africa. But I found these difficult to find and expensive in morocco (like $30 or more), so if you won't be there a long time, I'd just risk it and not buy one.

Hope that helps!

Africa: Sub-SaharanMakeup Help!!!
I don't wear a lot of make-up either (and I'm fair), but I think people always look better if they put a little powder on their face. Just to even out the skin tone and so your face doesn't shine. You could also try a mary kay salesperson. My mom got me this powder/base foundation, which is a little creamy and applies with a sponge, and yet isn't heavy like a lot of foundations. mary kay isn't as expensive as some of the store brands, yet you still get someone who will let you try on some stuff. also, i wore that foundation stuff in Morocco often, and it didn't smear or sweat in the changing temperatures over there.

other than that, i'm a big fan of curling my eyelashes. I don't use mascara (it's gross!).

have fun and i'm sure you probably won't need it. the flush of love and after a little necking the flush of lust will make you gorgeous!

Africa: Sub-SaharanMorocco transport sahara tour desert trip ,Casablanca Marrakech Desert Fes
For sure do the train. You might want to check on whether you'll be travelling during holidays. If you are, I would get a first class ticket (not more than $20 more than the 2d class) so that you have a reserved seat, a specific seat. There are 6 to a cabin in first class, and 8 to a cabin in 2d. It's fun to ride in 2d class, you'll meet more people, but during the holidays, they don't limit how many tickets they sell and people are standing in the hallways and sitting more than 8 to a cabin. Definitely worth first class to have a more relaxed trip.

Although the good part is that you'll be getting on the train in Fes at the terminus (generally) so that there should be plenty of seats when you get on.

Have a great time!

Are stocks and mutual funds good? I don't mean money in Roth IRAs or any IRA or 401K. Just straight investment accounts.

QUOTE (Bobby_Umit @ Feb 23 2009, 08:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Also, the assets must be readily available to turn into cash, without causing hardship.

Assets may supplement income if the consular or immigration officer is convinced that the monetary value of the asset could reasonably be made available to support the sponsored immigrant and converted to cash within one year without undue harm to the sponsor or his or her family members. You may not include an automobile unless you show that you own at least one working automobile that you have not included.

Thank you both Yassine and Gary, for finally answering me. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself that no one had responded!

I will prepare the I-134 form. I will definitely get together letters from my bank and investment information. Do I need a special letter from my bank, or would the final year statement which shows January 1 balance and December 31 balance work? Or, if I just provided annual statements for several years? (Or I guess, re-reading your text, Gary, I should just ask my bank to send me a letter setting forth what you suggested!)

I'll also get copies of the taxes. I'm still considering asking my brother to co-sponsor, but I'd rather not bother him!

Thanks again very very much!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionI-134 - no income (yet) but lots and lots in investments
Hi, I'm hoping/expecting our NOA2 in the next couple of months. Because I returned from the Peace Corps at the end of December, I don't have a job yet, and I'm thinking of returning to school next year, so it's likely I won't have one in time for the consulate interview (which may require the I-134) or maybe even in time for our AOS filing (which will require the I-864).

The I-134 form instructions (which reference the I-864 form instructions) indicate that if your income doesn't meet the 125% of poverty level, you can make up the difference if you have investments, savings, etc. which are 5x the amount your income falls short. The current poverty level for 2 people is about $18k right now, I think. I have well over $100k in savings and investments.

So my question is: Will this work? Has anyone else done this?

I know I could get a co-sponsor, but it seems like I shouldn't have to if I have plenty of other resources. Clearly, I will if I must.

I'm just seeking to hear from people who have done this. Also, if anyone else who has interviewed at the Casa consulate can confirm exactly what my fiance will have to bring with him. The Casa page on VJ doesn't indicate the I-134, but it does refer to form 156k which says we must attach Evidence of Financial Support. Does this mean we attach the I-134?

Thanks! Rebecca

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionI-134 bank question
I don't think the consular officer is going to sit there and reconcile your income and your deposits. But if you're worried, why not write a cover letter explaining that deposits include salary and business expenses?

We haven't done the interview yet (so maybe I'm full of it!), but I think the best policy is to set forth everything so straight-forwardly that the consular officer doesn't have to think too much. So write a letter. Something like:

Please find attached the following:

1. Signed I-134
2. Letter from so and so bank dated ___, regarding my account, the date it was opened and the present balance.
3. Bank statements from so and so bank showing deposits for the period ___ to ____. Please note that deposits exceed salary because of reimbursed travel expenses.
4. Tax Return(s) for the year ___.
5. yada yada

What do you think of that? I would think the officer would like to know on one page that you've provided everything you're supposed to, and probably will be impressed you're organized.

And good luck!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionMissing Interview appointment
He said he'll reapply in a couple of months? I wonder what is going to happen in a couple of months that would make it ok then to apply. Is his mom on her deathbed?

I'm sorry for you, this is hard, I know. But he needs to understand that he can't just expect the world to wait while he works things out. You, and the US government, will have moved on by the time he's convinced his mom!

But definitely, he should try to reschedule. If that's what you want!

Good luck!
dimanuniFemaleMorocco2009-03-18 22:38:00
US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionMissing Interview appointment
Could he call the consulate and request a later interview date? I don't know if anyone has done this, and what the implications are, but it would seem to me that the consulate would be more annoyed by someone not showing to an appointment than if someone calls and says they can't make that day. He may not even need to explain why, it may be that the next time they have availability will be a month or so later, so he'll have time to work on his mom. If they ask why, make up a reasonable excuse. Like unavailable transport, I don't know. I sort of doubt they'd even ask why. He could simply say that the papers you've sent him haven't arrived. Or, if he already told them that they've arrived, he could say that you needed to send him an updated form or something. [I hope people aren't going to start freaking at me for advising you to lie. I'm not advocating fraud!!! Don't LIE, OK??]

I sympathize with you, foreign mothers seem to have an unnatural hold on their sons (as opposed to Americans), and it could be just that he's not given her enough time for it to sink in. So maybe another month or so will help.

On the other hand, if she's had plenty of time to understand this is happening, then I don't have sympathy and think he's a mama's boy and you'd be better off without him. If that's the case, tell him that you'll call and withdraw your application.

Good luck! It's a hard choice for both of you. I don't blame these guys for getting cold feet. It's a huge change to leave your country, possibly forever!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionJust moved to new address - whom should i notify?
Hi, I just moved into an apartment, but everything I've filed has my parents address. They live about a mile away and therefore I can easily pick up mail there. However, my bank statements now say my new address. My fiance's interview is April 29, and I'm sending him the I-134 and back ground information.

So, everything says my parents address, except for the bank statements. (I've literally only lived in this apt for about 2 weeks, but unfortunately, the bank statements were just issued!). Should we fill out all the forms with the new address, and send an update form to the USCIS? Or can I keep my parents address and maybe make a note that my parents address is my permanent address? They've lived there for 28 years, and I consider it a more permanent address than any apartment I may live in for a year.

I don't want to confuse the consular officer. Also, when I emailed the consulate, they told me NO financial information is required, however, people who reviewed the Casablanca consulate advised to bring it, so I want to include it.

Hope this makes sense and hope someone can answer me quick, I want to mail this stuff today!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionCR1/IR1 Interview in Casablanca
My fiance had his interview today. He had translated everything himself, and certified it. He was asked to get them translated by the translator across the street. He was able to do so and got them back to the consulate the same day. We had translated the documents ourselves in the package we sent to the California service center, but clearly that's not enough!

So, the lesson clearly is: just get them translated in Morocco, by the translator across the street!!

But the good news is, he was approved! Lhumdullah!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionCR1/IR1 Interview in Casablanca
What do you mean "moroccan translation?" I can't imagine why they won't accept your translation. Are you conversant in Arabic?

And who actually did the final translation? Did she have to pay a lot of money? My fiance is doing the translations himself over in Morocco. I hope that works. But maybe he should go to the same people you did. Was it like a certified translator?

Thanks and good luck!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionAffidavit of support
Also, recently, the Casa consulate hasn't required any financial information. My fiance interviewed April 29 and the consulate specifically told me in an email that no financial info was necessary. So you still have a couple months before the interview (f you just filed and got your NOA1 April 14, you may have another month before you get the NOA2, then a couple of months for the interview), then he has to come (insha allah) and you have to get married, THEN you file for AOS and provide the financial information. So you should have a few months at least!

that being said, of course I'm sure you want to get a permanent job and fast!

Good luck and cute photo!
dimanuniFemaleMorocco2009-06-11 20:17:00
US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionProof...
Hiya, my husband says that he shouldn't bring a bag in, but that it would be fine to have the binder. He probably won't hand the whole binder to the consular official at once, but that the CO might ask for evidence, and then your fiance can pull out of the binder what he wants to show.

I send my husband (then, fiance), some loose papers and a small photo album, the one dollar kind you can get at walgreens or wherever. That worked fine for him. He introduced the photos when the CO asked if he knew any of my friends and family. He said, yes, I do, and here are some photos. Then she asked him all about the photos. She also looked at our skype logs, but quickly. If he brought up something, like "we chat through skype", then she would say, "let me see it".

So I think the binder is a good idea if your fiance can use it to find the information he needs quickly. and it's good for him to mention things which are in the binder. Sort of a back up to what he's saying.

Good luck!!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBijad's Casablanca Interview Experience
I think you should expect two months AP, just so you're not disappointed. I think that's very typical. That's how long we had. But to be honest, I think he'll get his visa before then, because they kept his passport. They didn't keep my husband's (then fiance), and we waited two months. but i know of other people who had shorter aps, and their passports were kept.

Congrats and good luck! You'll be amazed when it's finally over. Ahmed has been here for four months. It basically took 7 months from I129 filing to visa, and then we awaited two months for him to come, and now it's been jsut a little over a year since it all began and it seems like it went so fast!!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPost Interview: Delays in receipt of Visa
hi guys!

congrats on getting approved!
now, the hard work is over and you just have to wait.

from my experience i can say, somehow between the embassy and the courier, things sit around for a while.
my husbands interview was july 11th. he was approved but they needed additional paperwork to issue the visa. so we mailed in the additional paperwork on the 13th (a friday). on july 30th the courier arrived with his passport and a letter dated the 18th, stating they weren't accepting my paperwork.

so in actuality, is that a word? they must have received our stuff on the 15th and wrote the letter on the 18th, that's pretty fast of them to process something, but then it didn't get to us til another 2 weeks!!!! so what is the passport doing sitting somewhere? who knows!!! this made us crazy waiting nearly 3 weeks to hear we weren't getting our visa yet! agh, all that time i could've been getting the correct paperwork done!

so if you've been approved, it definitely will get to you. it just takes forever to find its way from the embassy to the courier.
anyways, that's just my experience from the last month.

yours should show up soon, don't worry!

US Embassy and Consulate Discussionno 2006 income tax
hi,

at my husbands interview they didn't give him the visa that day because they didn't have my 2006 tax return. they weren't accepting my letters from the irs stating non-filing for the past 3 years. i had been living in the uk for the past 3 years, so i never thought to file in the us.

BUT i have since learned they just want to see that you've filed the 1040, regardless if you made any money or not. so i have done my 2006 1040 in addition to a 2555 foreign income exemption form, showing i made a small amount in the UK.

so now, they are holding my husbands visa until my paperwork gets to them. we've also submitted a cosponsor which is really easy, to be sure that they have a financially able person to sponsor him.

so, i would expect a problem if your husband hasn't filed yet for 2006. the letter stating an extension may appease them. i can't be sure about anything with immigration anymore!
my husband and i were worried about his past police arrests from 10 yrs ago affecting his visa outcome, when in reality they didn't care about that! they cared about MY 2006 TAX RETURN, when they had evidence that i wasn't residing in the states and was earning in the uk. so go figure!

good luck with your interview! my husband said it wasn't so bad as expected.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionHELP! Got request for tax return at interview!
hi tracy,

this exact thing has happened to me and my hubby. at the interview they w/held the visa until they received my 2006 taxes. i hadn't filed 2006 taxes, because i was living and working in the UK & made about $4000. so, last week i backfiled (really easy) at the local IRS office stating my foreign income (2555 form). this has been sent to the embassy but I also had my mom co-sponsor (at the last minute). the courier picked up this paper work and my hubbys passport last tuesday.

i have been calling the dept of state to check and see if they have begun processing it and they don't even show it has been received. all the lady could tell me was that sometimes it takes a while for paperwork to make its way around the embassy! i'm pretty p/o about the slow state of the courier getting packages delivered. i just imagine it sitting somewhere waiting in a big pile! this past month has showed me that they were pretty quick processing paperwork (4 days) but from the courier to my husbands hands it took almost 3 weeks!
so i'm pretty anxious about the wait ahead.

from what i heard (read) they should process it quickly. but it's the time inbetween the embassy and the couriers that bothers me. too long!

just sending in your paperwork should be fine! i'm telling myself the same thing!
just waiting is the worst part.
i think you'll get it done definitely soon.

good luck!

Today is Natasha's birthday and the government decided to give her a present - her EAD card! Of course, with the interview coming in less than 3 weeks, she probably won't get to use the card, but still it was nice of W to get it to her. Not only that, but she just put a dollar into the soda machine for a 50 cent (no relation) soda and got back 4 quarters in change, so my employer has also given her a gift as well! YPA!

I do not really rush to get it,i am just worried if they sent mail and i never got it and missed in terview..could this happen?
Anything is possible. It's even possible that you are secretly being vetted for vice president.

It sounds like nothing is going to make you happy until you call them and hear "your case is being processed" so go ahead and call them.

I'd vote for that ticket! At least the visa community would get some representation!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusRussian city you would most like to visit?
I agree with Slim - most of us have been to Moscow already so we'll pick someplace else. Haven't been to St. Petersburg, so that's my pick. Sergeiv Posad was very nice, even in winter (or perhaps especially in winter). On our first trip back to Russia, we plan on travelling to the Urals to see where Natasha (and much of her family) was born.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusLess and less people in russian forum
Yeah, I do need to update my site. I keep the photos and videos up to date, as I take them, but the blog posts are time consuming. I've written several, but my home PC has died (PSU I believe) and I don't have the cash to replace it (it's a frankenstein machine, with 8 or 9 harddrive, 4GB, server mobo, etc - needs LOTS of power) and that's where my Russian translation software is. I hate posting things I can't also translate to Russian for Natasha's family. One day (soon) I'll get it back running and post some of the things I've written in the past few weeks.

That's my excuse. I still lurk about here (not that I was all that active to begin with) but only add the odd comment, in between duties here at work.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusIntroductory Vacation after arrival
The first weekend we were here, we drove down to visit my Mom, but that's only about 3 hours away. Other than that, we haven't been further away than Kansas City yet (about 4 hours).

When we need to stop, we stop. I know when I drive a long way I don't like to stop very often, because I'm in that 'gotta make time' mindset, so I suppose I've yet to discover if this will be an issue for us!

"what the #### have you f*cktards done with my shining city on the g*ddamned hill?!?!"

I think there's a haiku, or some iambic pentameter, or something somewhere in this quote....

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusRussian traditional condenced milk
Her Mom is shipping a bunch of things so Natasha asked her to throw in a little bit of Russia too (aka the milk). Natasha has tried the sweetened, condensed milk here and says it's not the same - she wants 'the brown one'. We will be placing an order on the site Mox gave, though!

Mox to the rescue! Natasha says this is exactly what she was looking for, though she balks at the 'high price', lol.

Natasha is also VERY interested in this topic! Her Mom is currently shipping her a couple of cans...

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusBecause it's the Russian Forum....
....so I thought I'd save time and just derail this thread from the very beginning.

This one is for you, Mox!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusCongrats kevin & Natasha!!!
Thanks Bill. After we got home, I didn't see Natasha for 2 or 3 hours, as she was posting on forums and making MANY phone calls. We are very happy to be 'done', even if it is only for the next couple of years.

Good luck to all!

Hey, offering naked pics is probably a very good way to entice new friends!
