Canadaa bunch of questions re: MTL interview
QUOTE (karina @ Aug 19 2007, 08:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi everyone,
My hubby's interview is coming up soon...

Do you think that I should redo my I-864? We submitted in late May 2007, and nothing has changed since.

Would you mind taking a look at our list and let us know if anything is missing....
- appointment letter
- copy of our entire I-130 case ( I-864, DS-230)
- copies of police certificate, marriage certificate, birth certificate.
- 4 photographs (2 extra), with my hubby's name written on the back
- medical, xray
- vaccination report
- expresspost envelope (filled out with his address, and label with "signature required)

proof of relationship
- 2 scrapbooks we made for each other (w/ letters/cards, photos, boarding passes)
- wedding album
- phone bills (do i need to bring phone bills from the past 18 months? since we've been apart)
- documents that show that we have a joint account, his life insurance with my name on etc

Thanks so much for your help!! smile.gif

I think you need your passport and $100 US cash

I haven't even been approved (K1) and I'm my mind is so boggled on all this.
I have stat days and an ann. day. Union rep told me to hold and use those at the end of Sept, and the first week of Oct. I'm hopefully leaving Oct 8.

I think I understand I have to apply within 14 days of leaving my employment. The problem is going to be, we're paid in 2 week periods, I will not even get my last pay in the bank until the 19th, then they still will have to mail my ROE. Previous experience mailing to the AR address is approx 2 weeks. So that won't even arrive until last week Oct or Nov. Will EI call or will I have to call and explain why I haven't submitted them?

And yes I have read everything, OMG.... wacko.gif

I don't know about you. But my company told me that as per employment rules, as I was leaving on April 12th, they paid me everything INCLUDING last 2 weeks of work,, my 4 days of work that were due on May 3rd and my 3 weeks of vacations ALL on April 19 th. And they sent me all my last paystubs along with my ROE on the week after. She said they ahd to do this because per law they have to pay the total amount that is due to the employee that is leaving within 2 weeks of termination of the position. So it sucked big time cause they took a huge chunk out of taxes mad.gif

Yeah that would suck by doing that they gave the Gov. some of your free time pay. When I left they owed me my 2 weeks pay ( paid bi-weekly ) and 1 weeks vacation on the sceduled pay periods. They gave me the option , everything I was owed in one pay or to just take it when the pay days arrived as scheduled. I opted for the regular pay period.
Guess it depends on who is doing the payroll

I left my employ in Feb. and filed for EI in June. I believe the only thing with filing late is you loose weeks eligibility. They told me if I'm approved I'm only entitled to 22 weeks

Yeah I'll be asking a lot of tax questions come that time too. I worked 2 months in Canada last yr. and I have a monthly company retirement pension payment being administered by a Canadian financial firm. They deposit each month and tax it in Canada
I don't know whether my company pension is US taxable I think it falls under a tax treaty the US and Canada have.

Where can I find out if Canada and the US do have an income tax treaty

How will receiving EI work when it comes tax time at yrs. end. I assume a Canadian tax form would be filed as the money was paid from Canada.
Does a person also have to claim the EI payments from Canada as income on a US tax filing. Just wondering how this works if I'm approved for EI

So they finally got around to re-instating my EI yesterday...but I'm a little worried.
It stated that such and such amount of money "was or will be deposited into your account on July 24, 2007"
I have yet to receive that deposit, and I have never had a problem with money going into my account. When it says it's going to be deposited, it's always been there that day.

Should I be worried? Or call?

I had a message yesterday saying that "was or will be deposited into your account on July 25" and at 12:30 am it was in there....SO I would definitely make sure your information is correct for your account or call them up.

I just received a call from Melanie at EI in Belleville. She informed me that the paperwork they sent to me here in Spokane has been returned as "undeliverable address". She confirmed the address with me and it's correct. Anybody have this problem before with receiving mail?

I had the Address problem as Misa stated , had to make them write the Address first and then the apartment number.

Another thing is the mailman told us if the name on the enveloppe doesnt match the name in the mailbox they return it. I had my EI in my maiden and my mailbox in my married name. So I added my maiden name in the mailbox and called EI to add my married name on the enveloppe. So now both show both names and the address is correct, so they sent me a bunch of cards.

Carla you might want to call them and file your cards on the phone because if its not done within 3 weeks of the last date it can cause delays in your claim. I did this because of all the undeliverable cards and everything worked alright  They also sent me the cards which I completed anyways even though my case was up to date online.

Hi Mephys, thanks for the info. What you say is exactly what happened to my mail. EI had my name on the envelope and the mailbox was in Lorry's name only. The mailman was only leaving the mail that was in her name.
I know now stuff that was sent to me in early July from Nova Scotia is probably on it's way back to there.
We went to the Post Office and got it all straightened out and changed the name in the mailbox.
Hopefully that will help me get my mail

Take care

As long as they receive cards on the return they'll issue the ones for the next 2 weeks covered. Your claim will be on going and any back money they owe they'll pay if qualified by them

Yeah gotta let em know whether you worked or not in the 2 week time frame the cards cover. When I was on EI I was allowed to work 1 shift in the steelmill without having to lose off my EI payment. Any more than the 1 shift and they deducted dollar for dollar
That was several yrs back though, things may have changed since then Maybe they allow more now

You have to return your EI cards each time you receive them in order to keep your claim active.

Normally there is a 2 week waiting period. Your first payment is usually for a single week which would be week 3
After that all other payments are on a 2 week interval basis

CanadaWe got our interview date!
QUOTE (MonopolyMoneyHoney @ Aug 28 2007, 08:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Jeeze.. I never thought it would happen. I think I'm solely responsible for the Montreal Consulate no longer accepting phone calls for case status--sorry everyone! They kept telling me that our interview would be in November, but surprisingly, it's in October!!

So.. panic arises. I feel like we're down to the wire now (ohgodohgodIhopehesapproved!), and we're gathering everything we need for the interview in Montreal.

Here's what we have- original and 1 copy:

DS-156K (unsigned!)
I-134 Affidavit of Support
Letter of intent from me
Proof of ongoing relationship (photos and proof of visits)
Birth certificate, long form
Police certificate
DS-156 (only have 2 copies, sent in original)
DS-230 (only have 2 copies, sent in original)
Name change document
Original tickets to support evidence of our relationship (from the I-129F packet)
Photos (same as above)
His passport
Passport photos (although they are dated in May--does this matter? If so, we'll get them re-done)

*We'll get the mailing folder closer to the interview date.
*His medical is on September 11th.

Is there anything we've overlooked??

How did everyone else arrange their documents? Right now we have the originals in one manila folder, copies in another, and the whole I-129F packet in yet another. Then all of the folders are put in one big mailing packet. Does the Montreal Consulate prefer that the documents are in any particular order?

It's true that the consulate works on a first come, first serve basis, correct? So even if they named a time for our interview, we can show up at 7:30 and be helped first?

Ahhh! I can't believe this is finally happening!!

Remember to take $100 US they'll be looking for it Congrats and good luck

QUOTE (monicatony @ Aug 29 2007, 08:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hi all. Congrats to my fellow VJ'ers who have finally been granted their interview dates!! kicking.gif
We are all nervously scurrying to make sure we are ready. Apart from document worries and "not being able to find the consulate or parking nearby in Montreal" worries .... I have another question. Do they just want to see pictures and phone records and such from K1 Fiance visa applicants or do we married folks have to show proof of our realtionship as well? Were any of you recent K3 interviewees asked for pictures or proof?
A side note... I purchased a blue plastic accordian file to carry my documents. It's not paper...do you think that is a problem for security? Can you bring car keys in with you?

Monica

That's the type of folder I had going there , no problem with it at all. As far as the keys I don't know they'll take em when you go through the metal detector anyhow and may give them back on your way out

You can buy your own envelope at the Post Office. My packet 4 had the size required I trhink it's the largest one they sell at the Postal outlets.
### for copying, yes it's wise to have copies of everything I even copied e-mails I received from Montreal

CanadaBehaviors, manners and overall attitude

A couple things I have noticed different. Where I come from in Canada it's proper to hold a door open for the person coming behind you and to also hold the door and let ladies enter first. I have noticed on many occasions here in the US some people don't care whether anybody is coming behind they just enter and let the doors go
Also have noticed on occasion where men don't hold the door for women and let em enter or exit ahead of them
Several times I've seen people struggling to get something into thier vehicle and people just walk by looking at them. I have helped people several times and they seem amazed to have somebody do that. In Canada it's no big deal

In the US I find the people working the cashier stands are far more friendly and talkative than home. Also here they cater more to the customers in the stores. Most times if you ask where something is they'll take you to it not tell you a route how to find it and they always ask if you found everything you were looking for.

I almost always hold the door open for women, but I've noticed on more than one occasion the woman in question will get annoyed. My fiancee, for instance, thinks it's silly for a man to hold a door open for a woman. She figures women are capable of doing it themselves. I still think it's a nice gesture, however, and will hold the door open for her as often as possible, but it's a challenge.

As for someone struggling to get something into their car, I've offered to help in the past, but most people refuse the help and some almost act as if they're insulted by the offer. I suppose they take it as a suggestion that they can't do it without assistance. So I no longer offer to help.

I also think it to be proper to hold the door for a woman. Haven't ran across any yet I've annoyed with doing it but maybe some day lol, lol. On my first visit here with Lorry last July she wasn't accustomed to having the door opened and held for her Now she's use to it
As for the helping people maybe they're s bit less trusting of assistance here than folks in Nova Scotia. Although those I did help were thankful they were a bit surprised
Yeah I suppose some people could take it as not being capable for themselves but if they're struggling enough with something they'll gladly take the help
