CanadaTo those of you finally home (US side)!

Wow! She was just trying to be helpful. Udella is one of the most sincere and helpful members of this board so your comment is really uncalled for. If you had posted your own thread, you would've probably received more answers, that's all she's trying to say.

Pocheros - congrats on the move! I just got back from North Las Vegas. My in-laws have a house there (they plan to retire there) so we go at least once a year, I'm sure we'll go more eventually too once we have kids and they live there for good. My husband and I really like it there! If it wasn't for our jobs in NYC, I could totally see us moving there as well. We went on a hike at Mt. Charleston and totally recommend it if you haven't been! Even just to get away from the heat (it was 70 degrees in the mountains, vs. 100 degrees back at the house!). I'm also from Mississauga, and see you're from Brampton :) Small world! Compared to NYC, the grocery stores in Vegas are much better haha! The produce is soooo much cheaper in Vegas compared to NYC. My husband and I were sooo jealous of how cheap the avocados were, LOL. You might want to check out the filipino grocery store, Seafood City for rice and other things. I haven't been in awhile, but you might find some things you're looking for. I miss No Frills too. And, the Bulk Barn.

I agree Udella has been in here a long time and is always more than helpful on inquiries. To make uncalled for comments is very unwise, never burn your bridges you may someday have to cross them again.

CanadaPaying Canadian bills from the U.S.

https://www.usps.com...oney-orders.htm

USPS will not give a money order in Canadian funds. I went down that road with them
when trying to get a money order in Canadian funds for Canadian passport renewal.
I had a money order from Canada sent to me for the renewal.
The International money order they refer to is issued in US funds.

CanadaWeird message from the CRA
It's a scam started about 4 months back. I remeber reading something CRA had in a newspaper about it.
They stated they never call a person, they only contact via mail.

Hi Ziggy

I have a couple points I would like you to clear for us before we have our taxes done this yr.

I've been here in the U.S since 07 and collect a monthly pension which is deposited in my bank in Canada.

Last yr. my first tax filing here Jackson Hewitt did our taxes and when I pointed out about my pension earnings in Canada they said it didn't have to be reported here in the U.S. as pension payments would be tax exempt and Canada already taxed it.
My question is. Was this correct, I'd like to know for sure I don't want the IRS chasing after me saying we failed to report foriegn income.

My 2nd question: Do I just file a normal Canadian tax return this yr or do I have to notify them again for a section 217 return. Last yr. I filed under section 217.
Also this yr I have income earnings here in the U.S do they go on my Canadian return with my pension earnings

Thanks
Allie

THe gentlemen at JH was most incorrect. Pension payments are definitely NOT tax exempt with the exception of SS payments. If your pension payment is CPP, then it may be. I need more information.

If you had the 25% non resident tax taken out, then you are not required to file with CRA. If you believe your worldwide income will place you in a tax bracket below 25%, by all means file the Section 217 and get a portion of that 25% back.

The pension is a company retirement pension. When I moved here I called Mellon ( the pension administrator) to inform them I was now living in the U.S. and inquired whether they would be taking the 25% non-residence tax and they said they would be taking a rate of 15%.
Does this now mean I no longer file a Canadian Tax return ? Also how do I now go about reporting to the IRS the pension payments from Canada that weren't put in last yrs. U.S. return?

Thanks for yourassistance Ziggy

Allie

The 15% may be due to Tax treaty and it's treatment of pension funds. But yes, you would no longer file a Canadian tax return.

You would convert the amount of your pension into US Dollars and report it on the pension line on the 1040. (Line 16) If it is a pension from employment (defined benefit plan), 100% is taxable. You would take a foreign tax credit on the pension amount.

I would really like to thank you Ziggy for assisting all of us here in the Canadian Forum with our tax issues. You make it a lot easier to deal with

Allie

One requires a ROE, otherwise Ei has no clue if u even qualify and for how much $$$ ur entitled to! You may be able to start the application process online, but not sure if there is info from the ROE you wil need, im sure others will chirp in. You have to mail in the original ROE as well, so make a photocopy of it for urself. Have u had ur k1 interview yet??

Some of the ROE's they already have electronically. If the ROE # started with I think it was a W then the numbers they have it. I'll dig the ROE out later to make sure on the letter

Right you are Flames I had to send a photo copy of the passport, the K-1 Visa and the I-94. I think I sent along a copy of the Marriage Cerificate too

CanadaThe Canuck EI Thread
How would collecting EI in the US work on filing taxes. I read in here where Flames was saying that Canada takes 25% tax off
When it comes time to file taxes on the EI I assume one would be filing on a Revenue Canada tax form as they deducted the taxes. What about here in the US does one also have to file a tax claim for receiving the EI and pay US tax on that money
I'm not sure how this is all suppose to work when filing taxes if I do manage to get my EI approved.

Could someone please enlighten me on how filing income tax on money received in Canada is done, while now living in the US.
I think my next tax filing is going to be quite an adventure lol lol

Thanks

But if I file in Canada right now would I be denied benefits because I left my job. They marked quit reason fo leaving as Relocation for anticipated marriage on the ROE
I probably won't be going State side till another month or more Will it only be a waste of time filing so late after leaving my work or should I just file and see what happens
thanks

I filed a little over 4 weeks after I quit my job. I quit on Oct 13, moved to the States on Oct 29, and didn't file til November 17. It didn't raise an issue. If you're not coming here til 5-6 weeks later, I would think you should apply now. There are spaces on the application form to explain your situation i.e. why it took you a while to get down to the States after quitting, etc.

Okay Thanks for the info I'll file now and explain the situation to them
One more question. Would I file at the local EI center here or is there an online form to use for this type of filing
Also when I file here in Canada do I refile in the U.S when I leave Canada

Thanks
Allie

Canadaquestion about medical
Hi visa journey world...I have a few questions hoping to get some answers

-Can the medicals be done in the Halifax area? From what I am reading it seems that Montreal is the nearest to me. If I have to have it done in Montreal is it possible to get it done the same week as my interview? Any suggestions welcome...what are other people doing?

-I have opted for electronic processing and sent the last of my documents last night...as a guess when do you think the interview would be? July or August?

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks for taking the time to do the review! I have my interview next week and it is helpful to get a heads up on what to expect. Did you bring your spouse with you or did you go alone? We're trying to decide what is best.

CanadaInterview Review
Hi everyone....Interview is done...very excited. Briefing of how it went down

Arrive at 7:50am , taken upstairs around 8:05am, went to the first window was given a number C2, after about 10-15 minutes was called to window number 10, extremely nice lady, asked for all my documentation, then asked to have a seat and wait to be called back. Called back again after about 15-20 mins, got my finger prints done. Ask to have a seat again and wait to be called to for the interview. Waited about another 10-15 mins then got called to window 8 for the interview....again a very nice man did the interview. First we had to swear in that the info we gave was correct, then some of the questions asked were....Where did you meet? What was the name of the website we met on? When did we meet in person? When was Craig last in Canada? When was I last in the USA? Was I ever denied entry at the border? Where did I work? How did I support myself and pay the bills? Was I ever convicted of a criminal offence? Out of there by 9:25am..
Then he gave the magic words and said welcome to the US!!!!!!!

The process was really a breeze and nothing to get nervous about but let me tell you I was nervous.
Being organized is definitely the key...there were others at the Embassy that were having problems due to not having the proper paperwork.

Good luck to everyone with interviews in the near future. Thanks to all of you who have answered many questions for us, we really couldn't have done this process without your help....again a big THANK YOU!!!!
