Go see Dr. Doane, get that over with, and then he'll send you on to the right building in the QE2 complex (he even gave me a map LOL, but it's not hard to find). You'll go to the business office first to pay the fees for the X-ray and the bloodwork, get the receipts and then you can get them completed in whatever order you wish.

Look for the Wendy's and Quinpool Market on the corner, turn left at the lights and go around back, lots of free parking there. If I remember correctly, Dr. Doane's office door, or the outside door, is green, hence his receptionist stressing it. :) It really is fairly quick and painless (except if you don't like having your blood drawn. ;) )

Get the RCMP record ASAP, that won't take very long. Oh, and pay the $20 to get your results couriered to you, it's worth it, especially since you have a long drive to Halifax. :)

Congrats Joel, you'll be getting your interview in no time. :)

My employer knew of my plans (seeing as we had a staff of 5, it's kinda hard not to!), and as far as I know, she was not directly contacted.

The instructions on the packet from the embassy is what you must follow.

Indeed. Some embassies/consulates require that you hold onto the form and bring it and the required documents that go along with it with you to the interview. Check to see what they require.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhat do you do to keep from losing your mind ?
1. I worked. Lots. fortunately, the job I had needed me to do lots of OT and I had like 5 projects going on at any given time, so my mind was occupied a lot. :)

2. Took lots of walks with my mom, and spent time with my parents/family as much as possible.

3. Spent time at my favourite place (the beach)

4. Packed up my apartment, and sorted out all my stuff.

5. Talked to Jerry lots. :)

6. Planned my wedding, and spent time with my mom making things for it (favours, invitations, etc).

7. Spent lots of time on VJ :P

The key is not to dwell on the immigration process TOO much, or you will seriously go nuts. I had my ####### days, but I managed to not stress about it too much by doing other stuff. It isn't worth the potential ulcers. ;)

When my husband and I were doing the whole fiance visa thing, we didn't find VJ until after we filed the initial petition. We included two separate and individually signed statements of intent, addressed "To Whom It May Concern" and that's it.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresflight itineraries....

Evidence will vary from case to case. And there really is no definate list of what one MUST send. What is required is for one to show that they have met within the required 2 year period. Its about the entirety of that evidence in being able to create an image in the minds eye of an adjudicator that you have indeed met. It will even vary with some adjudicators. In general, most of the time no single piece of evidence will stand alone.....it needs support by other evidence. This can be any number of things. Sometimes its that tiny little bit of what one might think insignificant that will tie it all together.

Exactly. Like I said in another very similar thread, the key to the I-129f submission is showing that you have met in the last two years.

The I-129f petition is like a puzzle, and the documents you send along with it are the pieces. Do the pieces fit together to make a complete picture?
CassieFemaleCanada2006-03-12 23:15:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresevidence for k-1 interview
beyond what the forms asked for, I made up envelopes of evidence: one for every time we met in person (pictures, emails before/after trip, souvenirs, boarding passes, etc), one of evidence of engagement (pictures from the proposal day, cards of congratulations, ring receipt), and one of correspondance between our mothers, hehe. I made it fit in a open ended cloth bag (or a big plastic bag, can't remember) with everything else.

I wasn't asked to show any of it (although I almost did, to prove that we had met each other's families), but organizing it all the night before the interview helped me to relax considerably. It helped to remind me why I was doing all of this! :)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresNew member, same worries...

a) When starting the K1 visa process, I do NOT need these papers, correct? I don't need to have them to begin the process, as they're only needed for step THREE, when I'm doing my part here in Canada, correct?

Correct. Your fiance and your co-sponsor(s) will each have to fill out an Affadavit of Support when you get to the visa interview stage of the process. You will also (by the sounds of it) need co-sponsor help when you get to the US and apply to adjust your status.

2) I know there are no specific wait times, but with people on these boards being from all over, maybe I can get some estimates. She's from Arizona, and I've READ that they're not SO bad for delays. I think I saw about a 2 month backlog or something. Does anyone from that area, or anyone that would use that same outlet have any knowledge of the length? I'm curious because I'd like to file while down there, then leave when my part comes into play and I have to come back to Canada.

This all depends on how quickly the service centre you are dealing with is processing K-1s. Arizona is either the California or Texas service centre (sorry, I am not sure off the top of my head, I am sure someone will pipe up with the specific one), and both of those centres are kinda slow right now. You may want to do a timeline search here on VJ to get an approximate timeframe. Once your petition is approved, it will take 2 weeks to a month (maybe more, maybe less) to get to and go through the NVC and onward to the consulate.

3) Along the same lines, where would I go in Canada to get my part done? I thought for sure there'd be a place in Ottawa, but I hear there are only two, one in Vancouver, and one in Montreal, is that true? I can make the day trip up to Montreal if I must, but if there's one in Ottawa, or a place in Toronto, that'd be great. Unfortunately, I've heard only Montreal, but on the plus side, they're supose to be on the fast side...so, bonus for that I guess :)

You will be dealing with Montreal, sorry. The consular offices in other Canadian cities do not deal with these kind of visa. Hey, at least you are relatively close. :) And with Montreal, when your visa is approved, you do not get your passport back with the visa in it until the next afternoon. So you can either wait and pick it up in person, or give them a pre-paid Expresspost envelope for them to mail it to you.

FINALLY...should we get a lawyer?

that is completely up to you, and your comfort level. Many people here in VJ have done it themselves, with great success. But if you are nervous, consult with some and see if you want to go that route. Make sure you do your research and find a lawyer that is AILA approved and completely aware of immigration issues.

I read something about a police report? What's that about, and could I get that before I left, just to have it?

You will need a Canada wide name check completed by the RCMP. In the case of some cities (in Ontario in particular), the Commissionaires do this for the RCMP. You will have to go in person with appropriate ID, and let them know it is for a US visa. If I remember correctly, these reports are good for 6 months. Some offices charge a fee, so be prepared for that as well. Oh and some offices get your check done same day, others take longer. If you have had prior offenses, and that comes up in the report, you will then need a fingerprint check report done, and those take ages to get.

Just asking what the person coming INTO the US needs to have ready for when their part of the process comes along, and what I can do now to speed that up. I know there's a checklist that comes, I've read that, anything I can check off of it beforehand that anyone who's been through it all can say?

Thanks again! Sorry! :innocent:

Seeing as you are from Ontario, you may want to look into get a copy of your long form birth certificate ASAP. They are getting quicker at sending those out, but they do have the reputation at taking their sweet time.

The key right now is completing the I-129f form and assembling the documents required for that. You have some form filling-out to do this trip if you plan on filing while you are there. :)

As far as working once you get here is concerned.....right now the only point of entry that is giving out the temporary EAD with any regularity is at JFK airport. If you want the stamp, that's your best chance, but you can do some research on point of entry/EAD stamps and see if there are others. The problem is, all major international airports in Canada, with the exception of Halifax (this will be changing in the next couple of years) have US Immigration onsite, so that you clear American customs on Canadian soil. And they do not, as far as I have seen, issue the temp EAD stamp.

However, to minimise the "downtime" without work, marry as soon as possible from your date of entry, and apply for your AOS and EAD as soon as possible after that, and your social security number. It's taking a couple of months for EADs to get processed, but if it is taking too long you can go and get a temporary EAD from your local district office 90 days after your NOA1. So that is a bit of a better scenario than 6-8 months. :)

Don't worry about asking questions, but do take the time to search around and read the wealth of information on this and other sites. I also humbly reccommend checking out the two Canuck Clearing House threads (the links are the first two links in my signature below) -- we've tried to assemble links to all Canadian related content in the "old" VJ site and this one in one area to make searching a lot easier.

Many best wishes to you both as you go through this process. :)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresDescribe how we met
The key to this is: whatever you decide to put in this answer, make sure you back it up with other evidence. :)

I think our response was 2 paragraphs long, about 5 or 6 lines in total? And then we had the passport stamps, boarding passes, photos, etc. etc.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresEvidences for K-1
This topic seems to come up again, and again, and again. Someone much wiser than I (methinks it was Andy) once wrote that it's not the amount of evidence that is important, it's WHAT that evidence shows, and how it fits into the overall picture. It's all about balance, IMHO.

And Passport!

The good thing is if he takes a morning off work and can get to downtown Toronto he can get to all these places,
medical, police certificate, passport & long form birth certificate

I momentarily forgot how much this process sucks ;)

haha I forgot about the passport!

Yeah, immigration is not for the faint of heart, that is for sure!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHELP!!! Got my NOA1 I believe and need some answers...

Myheart, I just noticed your Dan is in Toronto (me too!)

If he goes to Seiden for his medical he can also go to the Commissionaires for his police certificate, they're pretty close to each other. I went for the medical, went over to get my Police Certificate and picked both up a few days later.

Here's a list of who can do the medical

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHELP!!! Got my NOA1 I believe and need some answers...

I was actually referring to the visa itself as I believe his medical will be free as he is from Canada. So if I am understanding this correctly, he will need $100 on the day he goes for his interview to pay for his Visa? Then after he gets here we will need more for his AOS and EAD?

His medical will not be free, as he is getting it for an American visa, and not as part of standard medical care. He will also have to pay for the x-ray, and bloodwork. I had to pay a chunk for the medical, and then about $125 or so for the x-ray and bloodwork. When he calls the doctor's office for the appointment, they will give him the rundown on fees.

For Canadian consulates, you pay your $100 fee in US dollars the day of your visa interview.

If you are looking for more Canadian specific information, check out the top two links in my signature.

Best wishes!

I took my engagement ring reciept, wedding ring receipts, letter of intent to marry, pictures from a wedding shower (that both of us attended), and cards of congratulations from family and friends. The only thing they looked at was the letter of intent to marry.
CassieFemaleCanada2006-03-20 13:52:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresletter of intent

"To whom it may concern" will suffice. The I-129F instructions ask for signed statements from both of you attesting to your intent to marry verses formal or informal letters.
A statement requires no addressee.

Thanks for your help. I guess im so uptight about thise whole process because on my last trip to brazil, I sat next to a guy who had gotten married to a brazilian and said that he hired a lawyer and people were turned away at the embassy because they got one little thing wrong or whatever. ive been paranoid about it ever since. I guess i dont need the ``fiance leter of intent´´ written in big bold letters either like the example. I was under the impression for some reason that everything had to be just like the examples.

the examples here on the site are provided to give you an idea of how things should look. However, quite a few of us found VJ after we sent our original K-1 packets, and what we did wasn't exactly like the samples, but we got along fine. :) Use the examples as a guideline.

However, if you are attaching extra pages to the form because you ran out of room on the form, a good rule of thumb is to make sure that you add a notation on the top of the page that identifies the question being answered on that page.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresdivorce..need help
My husband got his final divorce decree 4 months (mid-february) before we applied for the K-1 (June). But if we wanted to get married in Oklahoma, we weren't allowed to get married there before mid-August. So that meant we applied before the waiting period was over. We personally had no problems from that.

The key of the visa is proving that you are free to marry.
