who do I tell!!!???

I obviously told EI...

Do I have to tell someone else??

Plus the canada revenue agency???

ohmy.gif

uh oh..I thought our gst rebate was from the PREVIOUS year spent on gst!! My accountant didn't tell me to do anything..and I'm due for a cheque ohmy.gif hmmm I'll see if I can get him on the phone tomorrow..

as soon as you move and become a resident of another country, you are no longer eligible for the GST rebate. I also was disqualified for a student loan reduction program because I was a resident of the US, even though the timeframe they would have looked at far as my income was concerned was before I moved. Doesn't matter to them. Even when I contacted them to cancel my GST rebate cheques, one still was direct deposited. They soon sent me a letter telling me to pay it back -- ever so efficient when it comes to collecting their money! tongue.gif

CanadaMoving from Canada to the US
QUOTE (Yomtl @ Mar 13 2008, 09:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi!

I have 2 questions for the Canadians on the forum who have already moved to the US:

1- Did some of you build some kind of checklist of things to do before leaving Canada (bank accounts, Canada Revenu Agency, etc....)

2- How did you proceeded with the actual move? Did you hire a moving company or did you rent a truck and did the move by yourself? (Did you have any problem crossing the border with all your belongings?)

3- Did some of you have experience with what documents are required to move with a dog? I guess I need to have vaccination papers up to date? Is there anything else?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Yohann.

1. Yes, I had a long list, including:
--checking with my bank on how to continue paying on my student loan, got set up with online banking
--get a copy of my medical file and/or dental file
--checking with my CPA who did my tax returns if there was anything I had to worry about in that respect (ie. when I get ready to file my last Canadian Income Tax)
--rerouting my mail to my parents
---get in contact with the tax people if you still get the GST tax rebate cheque, once you move to the US you are no longer eligible to receive it. So if you have direct deposit you need to make arrangements to stop the payments -- if that doesn't go through in time, don't spend any cheques that do get deposited after you move because they will make ways to collect it.

2. I choose to have my stuff moved through a moving company that was well experienced in Canada/US moves. They had a checklist for me so that I could assemble all the paperwork for them -- they made it really easy. I left the documents with my parents, they came and picked up my stuff, and delivered to me without a scratch or anything broken within a couple of weeks (it takes a while to get stuff from Nova Scotia to Oklahoma!). Was definitely worth the money for us.

3. Do a search in the threads here in the Canadian forum, this topic has come up a couple of times. smile.gif Vaccinations definitely need be up to date, and you need proof of that, and I think you need another piece of paper from the vet r/t health of your pet.

Good luck to you smile.gif

CanadaHas anyone gotten EAD stamp using Calgary as a POE
I used Calgary as my POE and I do not remember getting the temp EAD stamp. You can ask going through, but there are no guarantees on getting the stamp at any of the PFI's.

Have you checked out the EI thread pinned in this forum? I don't think the EAD stamp is necessary for applying for EI...... haven't checked on the requirements lately so don't take my word for it.

Canadacan we drive with the canadian driving license ? (Qc)
Since my DMV office in Oklahoma refused to give me a DL until I could prove residency to their liking (ie. green card), and since my Canadian DL at that point was still valid, I was allowed to use my Canadian DL to drive around until AOS was completed.

Thanks Gypsyangel. I'll report in, though not until Monday because if we meet in Chicago or meet in Windsor I won't be spending much time online! I really wish it was Darius doing this though, he's so much better at dealing with stress than I am. I'm terrified that they'll say no and he's confident they'll say yes.

Texanadian, why didn't you get EAD for 6 months? I thought they had to give it to you within 3. I promise, I know money-wise what I'm getting into and a weekend away will not mean we can't buy groceries when I'm in the States.

There's no law on the books stating that we get EAD approval within a specified time. The typical processing time for EADs right now is hovering around 90 days, but it could be more or less. And there are people that wait a loooooong time for their EAD.

My husband (USC) and I (Canadian citizen) would possibly like to move back to Canada at some point too. I am waiting until after I get my US citizenship though, so that there will be no problems if I ever want to move back to the U.S. sometime after we move to Canada.

I was of the understanding that if you leave the U.S. with only Permanent Resident status to live in another country permanently, that eventually you have abandoned your U.S. residency.

Is this not correct.... anyone?

that was my assumption as well, and as such is the only reason why I will be applying for US citizenship, I would hate to go through all of this to lose it if I was to move back before getting dual.

CanadaCrossing with kids
If I remember correctly, you may need a letter from your ex-wife stating that she knows and approves of you taking the kids with you, to minimize you being accused of kidnapping. When my best friend came to my wedding with her then 5 month old child, she made sure she had her ex's permission in writing, so that he couldn't pull that kind of a stunt (which he was/is perfectly capable of trying, because he's a butthead). I am not sure if this is a requirement, so hopefully someone here with a bit more experience than I will pipe up. smile.gif

Well guys, we got our AP documents on friday. We planned a trip to vancouver canada on saturday. So we drove there, crossed the land border into canada with nexus as we all have nexus so no questions asked. On the way back to the US, we crossed with Nexus as well into the states, the border guard asked my wife and sons status, we told him they are AOS and have AP, we showed him the AP and he let us threw. He didnt stamp it or send us in to stamp it. My question is, is this considered abandoning the AOS because we did not properly use the AP, but it wasnt our fault, and we dont want to stop so why would i hassle the guy to stop us and get it stamped. also, is there anything i must do with the AP document when entering canada, do they have to sign it. And if i go through nexus again, and no one asks anything do we still need to present the AP, or only if its asked for?

A couple of things:

Showing the AP to Canadian authorities when entering Canada isn't necessary.

You need to present your AP regardless of if you are asked or not when re-entering the US, and they are technically supposed to stamp the AP paperwork to confirm you have been "re-paroled" back into the US. I also had to fill out a white I-94 form and that was stamped as well. Perhaps Neiks or Zyggy will see this and answer your questions more crrectly. smile.gif

I resided in Greenwood NS (1.5 hrs west of halifax) and it took around a week to get my results MAILED to me. Think it cost me $20 for that. They sure were not speedy about it,lol

Dr doane office is right by the Canadian Tire as I recall, and one has to goto another place to get the bloodwork and Xray taken. Only a short drive

Yep, the QE II Health Sciences Centre on Robie Street. You have to go to the business office first to pay the fee, and then take the receipt to the radiology and lab units. Make sure they give you a x-ray film and not a CD-ROM.

Look for the sign for the Wendy's on Quinpool Road and you are in the right building area, you just have to go around to get to the entrance to Dr. Doane's office. The easiest way is to take the left where the sign for the Neighborhood Market is - go around and park in the big parking lot.

It's been a couple of years since I went to Dr. Doane's office, hope this info is still right. smile.gif

Mine were couriered to me in a week. I lived an hour away from Halifax. If I remember correctly, there was an option to pick them up myself, but with my work schedule at that time, I decided paying for the courier delivery was worth it. Just give them a call Monday am, they are a good office to work with, very helpful. smile.gif Just make sure to ask for a copy of the immunization worksheet that Dr. Doane fills out while you are there.

i just found out that my mom doesn't have my certified birth certificate and that i will need to apply for one.

my question is - will i only need one copy of my certified birth certificate for the process?

i am not entirely sure of the process and i am concerned that the montreal consulate will put my birth certificate in the 'sealed package' that i am to take with me. when would i get this back? i will need my birth certificate to get married in the state of IL as soon as i move to the US. any advice would be appreciated.

thanks! star_smile.gif

erin

ps. if any canadians could point me in the direction of some discussion on packet 3 and what might be specific to the montreal consulate, i'd greatly appreciate it. i looked but couldn't easily find anything... though i'll keep searching after dinner.

There is tons of information on Montreal in the Canadian forum (the link is in my signature) -- you may also want to take a look at the consulate reviews for information.

As far as the birth certificate is concerned, take the original and a copy to your interview. Give them the copy when asked for it -- if they need to take a look at the original, you'll have it with you. If you are worried about them taking your certified copy, order two and then you'll have the back-up for when you get married. However, I don't readily remember anyone going through K-1 having to leave a certified copy with Montreal.

To help you out a bit, I am going to move this to the Canadian forum. smile.gif

Many thanks to you all, for your responses and support!

Barring delaying the surgery, or delaying the interview (and that's NOT going to happen! LOL) I will just have to hope for the best. I'm expecting a full recovery, but at 52 years old, it is possible it could impact my ability to work and/or have a risk of future difficulties...which is a factor that's considered in approving a visa medical exam. We're not completely stressed out about this, but it sure would have been nice for this not to be occurring right at the same time.

Thanks again!
Annie

If that was the case, I wouldn't have passed the medical due to past history of stroke and its after-effects. They only want to do a basic medical, take down your medical history, and make sure you don't have anything communicable that is on the list of no-no's.

Your ability to take care of the financials of the relationship is addressed in the Affidavit of Support, not the medical. smile.gif

why is it illegal to have two different DLs? I really don't know why I want to keep my ON DL but I was going to change my name on my ON DL. I guess it doesn't really matter if I don't have it, I guess I just wanted it as a keepsake or something. I'm weird, I know!

umm cause it would be almost like having two different identities...

really? I don't know why but that doesn't make any sense to me. What about if you have dual citizenship, are you not allowed to have to 2 different passports, lets say a Canadian Passport and an American Passport?

You can have two passports as proof for citizenship, but you won't be able to have two passports for two different countries in two different names without raising suspicion, you know what I am saying? If they are both in your married name, or both in your maiden name, it's not a big deal. Same with driver's licenses.

People use DL's or state ID's with different names as aliases in crimes all the time. They are super sensitive about this at the DMV, hence you having to hand over your old DL in your maiden name.

QUOTE (Kathryn41 @ May 22 2008, 05:41 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Cassie, if I remember correctly, you worked in the Heritage field in Canada, right? I did too - and it is specialized field with not a great number of openings to begin with in either country, and unless you're the director of the Smithsonian, you are not likely to get rich at it either (VBG). I am again working part time (very part time) in the heritage field - but the part time is by choice - I don't want to deal with the 1 to 2 hour Atlanta commute twice a day which is where any good heritage sector jobs are located. Before I was married I could relocate to be close to where there were jobs in my field. Now, I have to try and find jobs that are close to where we live. That is the biggest challenge in finding good paying appropriate employment. Fortunately, my husband is the main breadwinner in our family; he does the daily commutes to Atlanta.

Indeed, you and I are an awful lot alike. smile.gif I worked in all sorts of situations, from a small community museum to a National Historic Site. I never did make a ton of money, but I loved it and was good at it (if I can pat myself on the back for a second wink.gif ) Tulsa has a few museums, but it's been a struggle trying to break in. The bulk of heritage jobs are a nice long commute away (from 1 to 2 hours drive one way). It's been hard letting that go, but I am now starting to look at finding a way to meld my two passions (history and crafty things/photography) into something that I can do at home and be satisfied.
