CanadaQuestion about entering the US...Please help!
If I remember correctly, based on other peoples' experiences, it takes around a week to get your passport back, because they don't necessarily ship it right away (the holdup is the security check, methinks). You're more than likely going to have to change your flight. Sorry! sad.gif

CanadaEI...in the US?
There is unemployment benefits, but I think you have to qualify or something like that. The difference is that in Canada, EI is paid through deductions on your paycheque and through the government, here employers have to pay half and I am not sure where the rest comes from.

CanadaDeposit a canadian check in a US bank
Yeah, I deal with a small credit union and they can't deal with American cheques at all without a major fee or holdup. So anytime my grandma wants to give me money for a gift, she gives it to my Mom and it gets deposited in my Canadian account and I either transfer it here, or leave it there for spending money when I go to Canada for a trip.

American banks for the most part don't like dealing with Canadian cheques -- major fees, etc etc. Since you are using Centura, it may be easier.

QUOTE(Team J and B @ Jun 24 2008, 11:15 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi guys, I am wondering where do you go to officially change your name to your married name? I know for the AOS you just write in whatever name you want your AOS dox to be in.

But for things like health insurance application, do you write in that same name as your AOS dox? Because my passport, I-94, Canadian legal IDs are all in my maiden name, so what should I be writing down in application forms from now?

Is there some department I should contact to make my name change legal? (Not just for USCIS.)

TIA!

J of Team J and B[/quote]

Once I was married, everything I applied for -- immigration paperwork, SSN, DL, insurance, library card, etc -- was filled out using my married name. I had my marriage certificate on me if there were any problems. My passport is still in my maiden name. It's been fine so far. smile.gif

As long as you don't receive any money or other benefits from the Cdn gov't that you are not entitled to, there is no problem. Even then, unless you update a gov't agency with your new address, no one will notice unless someone rats you out tongue.gif Even the different government agencies don't often communicate with each other on these things.

Even though I am pretty new to this fun game, if there are any get-togethers planned in Chicago, I would love to be included! I am normally there twice a month or so, so there is a pretty good chance I will be in town at that time.

They will notice when you file your income taxes and they realize your address isn't in Canada. wink.gif They communicate quicker than you think.

there is a form one CAN (does not have to) fill out, I can't think of it off the top of my head, but Im sure Cassie will chirp in with its name, lol I didnt fill it out, and from a few other tax forums I visited in the past, they said dont bother filling it out, but Cassie's tax dude said it should be filled out. On your Canadian income tax, there is a spot on the front page that asks when you ceased to be a Cdn resident, and thats all I did. There is a place on the Canadian gov't webpage that you can register and place your new american address. To do that, one requires some information from your past Cdn income tax papers (asks for an $$ amount from a certain line #) Very easy process. http://www.canada.gc.../intro-eng.html Epass is the name

hehe yeah I seem to be the poster child for this form tongue.gif

It's NR-73 and this is what the form says on the front page:
QUOTE
DETERMINATION OF RESIDENCY STATUS (LEAVING CANADA)

NR73 E (07) (Ce formulaire est disponible en français.)
Complete all areas of this form if you plan to leave or have left Canada, either permanently or temporarily. Give all the facts about your residency status
while living inside and outside Canada.
Mail only one completed copy of this form for the tax years in question (an additional form is not necessary for each tax year unless your situation changes,
or directed otherwise) to the International Tax Services Office, 2204 Walkley Road, Ottawa ON K1A 1A8. If you prefer, you can send the form by fax to
(613) 941-2505.
You can find most of our forms and publications, as well as information on taxes, programs and credits, on our Web site at www.cra.gc.ca.

I don't know why I seem to have been the only one required to fill this form out, but I did.
Laura, you may need to inform your province's health system about your intent to leave as well.

I had to fill out a form declaring that I was no longer a Canadian resident when I filed my last set of Canadian income tax forms.

You're not still considered a Canadian resident if you are only visiting twice a year.

We plan on moving back, but we're waiting until I get dual citizenship, because I'd lose my PR status and frankly, I don't want to start all over again if we need to move back to the US. But that's just us. smile.gif

Canadawhere did you first meet? online vs in person
We met online. smile.gif

Copied from a previous post:

we met online in a Christian chat room. We were in the chatroom portion of the website (he had just joined the site about a week before our conversation) and the group of us were talking about how fun it would be to go on a world tour and visit everyone -- first we would start in Paris, France to see our friend AJ, then to London, England to see our friend Tim, than on to Nova Scotia to see me, and on and on. That's when Jerry piped up with "Nova Scotia? Isn't that near Germany?" and then I piped up with I said "ah yes, another Yankee who didn't pay attention in Geography class LOL" We all had a good laugh over it and moved on with the conversation. Soon after Jerry PM'ed me wanting to apologize for offending me (if he had) -- I told him that I should apologize for calling him a dumb yankee!......and I think we chatted for five hours that day. We literally were together from that point on.

Then I wrote a brief letter on a separate sheet outlining the reasons why I wanted AP (visit family, in case something happened to my elderly grandparents who have health problems, possible wedding of my best friend, etc etc).

I have a question -- why is it that when a pro-US topic / opinion / comment is posted here, it's patriotism, but when positive things about another country is brought up, it's classified as US-bashing?

I'm not sure where all the rest of the articles you are reading are found, maybe I've missed them. Usually we have to sit and defend ourselves against the typical liberal hippie socialist commie comments we get thrown our way.

The point, when this thread was originally started on the old VJ, was to have links to all Canadian related information threads in one master thread. The links were organized according to topic (Montreal information, Vancouver information, moving, etc etc etc), so we could go to one place instead of searching through many many threads all over VJ. When we switched over to the current site, we could no longer access the old links, and this thread never really got organized like the old one -- and that was my fault. I might just get Ewok to unpin this thread.

Since you are currently residing in Canada, and don't plan on moving to the US until a year or so from now, I would humbly suggest you look into the DCF option. There's quite a bit of information on the DCF process, so start reading. :) If you, the US citizen, are considered to be a permanent resident of Canada, this option will work. That would mean you could get married in NS and then do the paperwork from there. You would also be able to submit the initial paperwork through Halifax (you'll have to do some research on that to make sure they can do that for you -- the office is quite small with odd working hours if I remember correctly), but the interview and the bulk of the work will be taken care of in Montreal.

Planning ahead is a good thing -- read lots, ask questions, and make informed decisions -- this site can be a definite help in that regards. :)

PS. I'm originally from Cape Breton, and I miss it!
