I think it's great that he made the apology. I also think that no apology can heal what was done.

That said, if it makes at least some of the people affected feel better, it's got to be a good thing.

I thought the apology and Phil Fontaine's response were both very moving. The apology was long overdue and I for one am glad that the government finally stood up and took responsibility.

And Sprailenes, that was a lovely post.

CanadaRenting a truck in the US + Not activating K1 visa
QUOTE (Cdn_Ali @ Jun 12 2008, 11:24 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It is illegal for a Canadian to drive a US registered & insured vehicle in Canada - unless you are importing the vehicle. Despite what you may have been told by the rental companies, unless your US citizen fiance is with you and does the driving, I suspect you will have a hard time crossing the border with the truck if you are alone.

If your fiance is with you, it shouldn't be a problem - except for how to explain why you are bringing a truck load of goods to the US if you aren't activating the K1. If you plan to 'wing it' and don't have a good reason, I wouldn't take the risk. Imagine the expense you will have if you get turned away at the border.

I think the OP is planning to activate his visa once the truck is full and he is ready to move. smile.gif

The first part of this post was what I was thinking about when thinking about trouble at the border (as well as the potential problem about activating the visa).

CanadaRenting a truck in the US + Not activating K1 visa
QUOTE (flames9 @ Jun 11 2008, 12:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Keep in mind of the Mileage! Most rental outfits (like Uhaul) give you only soo much "free" mileage from point A to point b, and usually its is not much more than what it would take. Once you go over that "free" mileage you pay soo much a mile, so check into that as well. By the looks of things you could save some $$ and if ya got the time why not! If one saw $100 laying on the ground, would ya just walk by it?? I had a medium size Uhaul and got around 10 mpg with it, but I drove it pretty hard.

But your problem (which probably isnt that big of a one) is the activation of the K1 and that is up to the POE officer, but others have had success at doing it!! If it were I, I may give it a go, easy to say though when it isnt me,lol

Oki see ur going with budget, but check too see if it is truly unlimited milage, some say that, bu tin reality, they are only giving 500 miles, and the trip takes like 480, so one has a small lee way! best of luck

Yeah, flames was the one I was thinking of when thinking about your mpg and the mileage. make sure to read the fine print and also ask to make sure what penalties you may incur by going over mileage or what their definition of "unlimited" means.

And being the semi-paranoid about this kind of stuff kind of person I am, I'd be afraid of taking the risk of them making me activate the visa.

Gas to come back with truck from Vermont to Montreal : 30$ max.
I would save about 500$....(1300$ if renting in Canada vs. 800$ if renting in the US)

As far as the k1 visa goes I had the interview 2 days ago so I should receive it in a few days hopefully.

Are you factoring the cost of gas needed for the truck?? They get crappy gas mileage. And is the extra mileage going from Vermont to Montreal and back factored into the price?

I honestly think you're underestimating it, but that's just me. And you haven't answered my other question -- is the UHaul quote done by mileage or by flat rate? If it's mileage, and you're adding on extra by taking it up to Montreal, they might ding you hard. You may also have troubles at the border.

QUOTE (Kathryn41 @ Jun 15 2008, 09:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Unless there is something medically related that is in the way of getting your visa I don't believe that the medical exam will be discussed at all. If there is something medical that may interfere with being granted a visa you may wish to disclose that now to your spouse rather than have it come up for the first time at the interview. Generally, it is my understanding, that if the medical reveals a problem you are notified when you receive the results and advised about how to correct it (ie. positive TB test, etc.). That being said, while medical results are personal your spouse should be aware of any medical issues you might have just so he/she can be prepared. My now husband and I thoroughly discussed our personal health situations - and I do have a medical condition - before our marriage so we each had a better idea of what we were getting into.

CanadaWhere did you keep your bags when going for your interview in Montreal
When I went for my interview, there was a cafe right next door to La Tour, that would hang onto your bags in a semi-secure area for a small fee ($5??). Not sure if they still do that, but I went in for an orange juice after my interview and they had quite the stack of bags off to the side behind the counter.

The reason why I said 'pretty much when you cross the border' was because of a run-in I had with the Student Loan people. I had qualified the year before for the loan reduction program (where you have to show your income for a year to prove you qualify to have an amount removed from your loan total). So for October 31 2002 to October 31 2003, I qualified. They sent me a "you can apply again letter" so I collected all my proof for October 31 2003 to October 2004. I was told (by letter and by phone call)that I was subsequently disqualified because I moved to the US November 1, 2004 (one whole freaking day difference!!!!!) and even though I was a resident during the dates mentioned, it didn't matter because I was currently in the US.

I'm not sure what you are trying to handle, but they will demand their money back that they paid you after leaving Canada.

Sorry. I hope I didn't give the impression I was disagreeing with you. Like Neiks says..... it depends on who or what you're dealing with. I was just trying to get across that no matter what else goes on, you are officially deemed a non-resident after 183 days. However, there are definitely other factors which come into play. I don't think I'm explaining this properly. Maybe do a search on the Gov of Canada site for a better explanation. I think my brain is too mushy to be any clearer right now. Sorry. blush.gif

No. You become a non-resident of Canada as soon as you move to another permanent location. Actually, Canada considers you non-resident once the IRS considers you a resident, which is pretty much once you step across the border.

If you had asked me this question a year or so ago, I would have said "I wouldn't have moved to the US 4 days after getting my visa, and I would have waited until after US Thanksgiving, Christmas and the birth of my niece."

But now that I look back on it, I am glad I moved when I did, because my mom was diagnosed with leukemia in March of that year, and if I had still been in Canada, I don't think I would have left them at that point. It all worked out in the end, the experience of being away from my family during a crisis helped me grow personally and Jerry and I grow closer as a couple.
