I have bought turnips here and they are tiny little things, not the big ones we always got in Canada. I asked a few produce people if they ever get the big ones and they looked at me like I was weird.

The small ones are real turnips. The larger ones are known as rutabagas here. They're known as that in Canada, also..... it's just that they make them interchangeable there.

to me, turnips have yellowy flesh and have a strong taste, and rutabagas have white flesh and a much milder flavour

CanadaPOE experiences you've had
QUOTE (AntandD @ Oct 12 2008, 10:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi Krikit,

Sorry about the misunderstandings about the time it "actually" takes for a person with a "visa" to cross the border at the POE. I didn't know that it takes longer than 10 minutes, as I was just guessing there, thinking that since a person has all their paperwork and visa ahead of time, they should have no problems and be processed quickly too. I guess I was wrong before in assuming that before...

By the way, what exactly is "secondary processing"? And what happens during this "processing" at the POE? If you had to go through this, was it a positive or negative experience overall for you?

Secondary processing is basically being taken off to another room or area and the officers take a look at all your paperwork to make sure it is in order, passport gets stamped /I-94 gets filled out and stamped. This can take 10-15 minutes, or it can take a while (like Krikit's experience), depending on how well-versed the officers are in the various visas or how many people are in secondary in front of you. I've seen people going through land POE's (particularly the lesser-used ones) are usually the ones to have the lengthy waits in secondary, because the officers may not see them everyday and may not be familiar with the procedures. The longest I had to wait in secondary was when I was going through JFK using my AP, because there were a ton of people waiting before me. So I sat and waited for about half an hour.

Hey everyone!!

Need your help.. please!! I tried searching for the answer but can't seem to find it.

Before I moved, I notified the Government that I was moving. I gave them my new address and they said no worries, that they won't be sending me anymore GST refunds. Butttt I received one last week. I know that I can't deposit it.. so, what should I do with it? Call them? Write return to sender on the envolope?? Any suggestions??

Also, Eric and I have moved, so is there anyone in Canada that we should notify?? Like for Tax purposes for next year?? If I remember correctly, I don't need to notify USCIS... I just write my new address on all of the AOS forms?

Thanks guys!!!

I held onto my extra payment, and when they sent me a "pay back the money" letter, I paid back the money. smile.gif

I think you have to fill out the "I've moved" form besides putting the new address on your AOS forms.

I've gone through Halifax a number of times using various assortments of USCIS paperwork. Haven't had a problem with the new PFI at all -- except for the time they confiscated a small pair of scissors that were within regulations, but I digress.

When entering Canada through Halifax, you'll get asked are you here for business or pleasure, how long you are staying, and you may get asked what I call "level 2" questions, like are you here for vacation or to visit someone, etc etc. If they ask tell them -- my fiance got her US visa to move down and marry me, and I am here to help her pack and move. They should be ok with that. An officer may come out to find her and check to make sure your story is bonafide (I speak from experience on this one), so she may just want to bring her passport with the K-1 visa in it.

You'll be fine. Halifax is an excellent airport, especially now with all the renovations completed. And yes, there is a little pub in the US flights waiting area. smile.gif

I really do wonder about how doctors are chosen for immigration medicals - whether it's up to USCIS or the doctor. I suspect that it's USCIS, because there are many more doctors here in the US that are willing to perform immigration medicals, and their costs vary from expensive to stupidly expensive.

Wow, this sucks. It was bad enough that Dr. Doane was the only doctor for NS, PEI and NFLD-LAB, but jeez louise, people will have to go to Toronto now? That's rediculous!

I think it has to do with USCIS, but I don't really know.

CanadaEvidence of relationship
I brought a ton of stuff, wasn't asked to show a bit of it.

Another K-1'er who I met in the waiting room told me about being asked about his relationship with his fiancee's son. He was happy to have been able to produce pictures of all three of them during a trip to DisneyLand, which satisfies the interviewer.

Many people aren't asked to show any extra evidence, but I'd bring stuff along, because you just never know.

I'll move this to the Canada forum.

Hey, yea we had to... she had fleas and we wanted to wash her asap. We went to PetSmart and they told us to use Mild Dawn on her. They said that it wont dry out her skin.

We found out that our little puppy is deaf. I didn't know this... but supposedly it is more likely in all white dogs. Anyone hear of this? We are gonna start training her with sign language. CanadaHow do I know if I'm US resident or Canadian resident
QUOTE (Kathryn41 @ Nov 14 2008, 07:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Actually, that is not technically true. I did not receive my green card until May 26, 2006. I physically left Canada May 7, 2004. For income tax purposes I ceased to be a Canadian resident on May 7, 2004 not May 26, 2006. For GST purposes, the day you left your permanent residence in Canada - gave up your address and your belongings - and moved to the US, you are no longer a Canadian citizen. Tax residency requirements are different than immigration residency requirements.

You will be required to repay that GST amount, if not before your income taxes are filed, then when they review your exit income tax returns early in 2009. You are required to state the date you left Canada on your return and that is the date they use for tax related calculations. Your "tax' residency for both countries is the date you physically move to the US to live in the US, not when you apply for or receive your green card.

yes.gif

jhunjhun, as far as Canada is concerned, particularly the tax people, you are no longer a Canadian resident, and you will have to pay back anything that was paid to you (GST, etc). You also need to inform them that you no longer reside in Canada.

think about it, if you have the temp EAD or the regular EAD, and are working, you are already paying taxes on your income (which means you are a resident as far as the IRS is concerned), but you aren't a resident yet (conditional or permanent) as far as USCIS is concerned.

Considering our driving is 99.9% the same, I am really confused as to why some states allow Europeans to practically exchange their licenses while Canadians have to be re-tested? Do any of you find that at all strange?

I find it odd. I'd normally think a Canadian DL would be accepted over a German or French license. Please do note that I don't have anything against Germany or France; however, since the U.S. and Canada are neighbors and alike in many ways, it'd seem logical for each country to accept the other's driving license.

To be fair, Canada isn't easy on American drivers, either. I've been driving for 14 years. Because my DL was recently renewed, the DMV here will probably make me retake the driving and written exams. Why? Because my license isn't over five years old and renewing it after having well over a decade of driving experience isn't enough.

My Canadian DL was accepted -- I only had to do the vision test -- but not until I showed up with a green card smile.gif

Thank you.

Do you (or anyone) know how the process works? When you cross the Canadian border (from the US) they ask for your passport or whatever and scan it... then that information goes to the Americans and they say "hmm she left, must have abandoned it"?

Or does it work the other way? When she comes back in she has to have the paperwork?

The POE officers when re-entering the US will look at her passport, see the K-1 visa, think "hmmm look at the canceled visa, now where is her green card or AP papers?" and then, my friend, you will have some 'splaining to do smile.gif

Canadaemployed vs unemployed
QUOTE (jedinite @ Nov 19 2008, 06:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ok, I am curious as to how many people on here are employed or going to school, or are just unemployed.

After being a part of the LJ community for some time now, I've noticed that there seems to be a large number of people that are waiting for visas that are just unemployed. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I've always been someone that has earned his meal. I'm just curious for those people not employed or working what do you do to keep your day busy and are you unemployed by circumstance (i.e. cannot work b/c you are in the US awaiting visas) or by choice.

I don't mean to be judgmental but it seems like in the last few months there are more an more questions about collecting EI or asking questions about remaining in the US for longer periods, etc. I am just wondering how some people can afford the time to just up and leave Canada to live with SOs in the US and not have a job, career or something other than his/her significant other as a purpose in life. And I'm curious as to what happens to a lot of these people after they get visas because they don't strike me as the type of people to be very proactive about pursuing some sort of career afterward.

1. A lot of people are inquiring about collecting EI when in the US while waiting for: getting a job, or getting their green card -- not collecting EI while still in Canada. It isn't all that easy to get a job here, you have to overcome questions about qualifications / education / etc transferring over to the US, so being able to collect EI while looking is helpful. We paid into it, why not use it since it is available?

2. Some people have the means to spend more time with their SO, and they choose to use it in that way. Why judge them for that? When I first moved here, I wasn't in a rush to get a job, I wanted some time to settle in after getting married, get my SSN, my green card, etc. My husband supported and actually encouraged that decision, because at the time we could afford to do so. it's also a good way of gathering evidence of an ongoing relationship (before getting the fiance or spousal visa).

I have lived here for four years. In that time, I have worked in 4 different temporary jobs, all having little to nothing to do for my former career. It took me a while to get over that mentally, because I wanted to continue in my career (I was really good at it if I do say so myself!), but I continually came up against a brick wall, and it was really depressing. But I have let that go, and began keeping my eyes open for something that was challenging, but would use my skills in a different way. I didn't go hard-core searching for something. I have been fortunate and managed to find something -- I start around December 1st.

Just my two cents.

That's why the person who wants to ditch their debt irritated me. When you have responsibilities, you have to cover them. You don't ditch and run because you want to be together sooner. Most of us who went the CR1/IR1 route would have prefered to be together sooner and go K-1, but could never see shirking our responsibilities to do it.

No I didn't see the above as a complete diss of all K-1/K-3s, but I feel an inference is there that the people that want to be together quicker and choosing the route that would make that happen are obviously looking for ways to get out of their financial responsibilities. I just wanted to make the point that not all K-1ers act/ed like the debt-ditcher. smile.gif I could never see dumping my debts and running off to the US, I knew that we planned to come back to live in Canada someday and I wanted to still have some semblance of good credit when I came back! So we made a plan and set up online payments, and in the next year my credit card and my student loans will finally be paid off. At the same time, we wanted to be together quicker, so we went the K-1 route and made sure we took care of all loose ends.

I don't know, the original premise of this thread must be still making me cranky. wink.gif

I do feel bad for my parents thou. :( They live up a very long lane. So they will be stuck till the plow gets to them. The winter before I moved here. We got hit with that storm that left 90 cm of snow on us. That was a nightmare. My parents couldnt get down the lane for 5 days. They are 70 & 75. I shoveled a path for them incase they had to get out in an emergency. That snow was up to my neck in the drive way and I am 5 ft 7 in. So you can imagine how long it took me :crying: I mean I am talking a LONG lane. Thats what scares me the most, them not being able to get down that lane, or someone to get up it if something were to happen.
