It turns out that Jerry's sister and cousin contacted everyone on his side of the family (it's a big family) and said "hey, jerry's getting married, most of you haven't met his wife to be, but you will, and we won't have time to have a wedding shower for them before they get married, so how about sending them a letter and pictures to introduce yourselves to her and something seasonal to decorate their house with". they boxed up everything and voila -- the big box on the floor. It was a wonderful thing for them to do, I just wish that I could have gone through the box after a good night's sleep!

Oh Cassie! How lovely. I mean timing is everything - and after a good night's rest would have been much better, but what a nice welcome into the family.

When I had a chance after the wedding, I went through the box again with my mom and really read all the little notes that were enclosed -- it was a very sweet thing for them to think of and do. smile.gif I just wish I had been more than semi-conscious when I first opened everything!

CanadaJust curious . . . . . . . . .
I had been up that day at 3am AST, and rolled into Tulsa at 9pm CST after 4 flights. Let's just say that all I wanted to do was lie down and sleep. My in-laws to be had other plans though. They all showed up at the airport in force ..... I vaguely remember a camcorder.... I think I was polite. tongue.gif They wanted me and Jerry to come to their 5th wheel which was parked down the street from Jerry's house at the local campground, and then go to supper. I was NOT in a sociable mood, so it took a while for Jerry to convince me to at least go down to the camper. I walked in the door, and there they were (with that dang camcorder in my face!) with a huge wrapped box on the floor. It was full of gifts for us, and letters/pictures from his family. I managed to unwrap everything and smile and nod enough for everyone's satisfaction, and then I finally got to go to sleep!

CanadaCanadian Bank Accounts
One of the lovely things that you will notice with Canadian banks (well, at least with the Royal Bank branch I deal with) is that they are totally cool with dealing with foreign currency, particularly American currency. Cashing or depositing a cheque from an American account does not send the tellers in as much of a tizzy as it does when one tries to cash a Canadian cheque here in the US.

And I get charged with fees here in the US as much as I do with my Canadian account.

Necrotica -- those pics cracked me up!

Marilyn, I've found white chocolate melting wafers at Hobby Lobby in their cake decorating / candy making section. I've made cranberry almond bark with them. Is there a Hobby Lobby near you?

My sister-in-law made our wedding cake and groom's cake. They seriously were the best cakes I have eaten in a long time, I think she used Sprite or something in it. You could see me in my wedding video talking about my cake too (glad I wasn't the only one that did that, Marilyn!)

Really these are great!! So krikit, where are yours hmmm? We don't have any as we had a civil ceremony and the Daughter of the officiant just took some photos, which she promptly lost (can't remember if she lost the camera or the film).

Alas, I have the same story. We took a disposable camera with us and the officiant took the pics during the ceremony. (Civil wedding.) When they were developed they didn't turn out. Then I realized that my husband had packed that camera in his suitcase so it got zapped during the x-ray process. (Cameras should never go in checked luggage.... the x-ray machine is much stronger than the hand luggage x-ray machine.) We keep meaning to have them redone by a photographer but we just never seem to get around to it. blush.gif

that does it! The two of you need to have a double vow-renewal ceremony and all of us will come and Carla and Marilyn and Kathryn will cater and flames will bring the Timmie's and Spirit will perform the ceremony and Mumsie will be the Emcee at the reception and the rest of us will take pics!! laughing.gif

female: Look dear, the Canadian Prime Minister has called a federal election, and they will be voting in mid-October.

male: so let me get this straight. Your election is called, campaigned, and voted on in 6 weeks......and even after that is done I will still be waiting after two years of campaigning to vote in mine???

My fiance Danielle will be going to see him soon. Thanks for the information. Was the hospital visit for blood work and xrays fairly painless?
She's gone to Dartmouth medical for lab work before and it was simply a nurse taking blood. Similar situation as best you can remember?
Thanks!

When she goes to the hospital after the medical, she'll have to go to the business office first and pay for the x-ray and the bloodwork, she'll need to show the receipts to the two different departments and tell them she needs them for a USA visa and theresults need to be sent to Dr.Doane. They are used to this. The set-up is a typical hospital -- lab techs will take her blood, x-ray techs will take her x-ray. It's fairly painless, although getting around the QEII hospital can be a bit confusing.

Dr. Doane's office is very efficient and he is very efficient, it was a pretty painless process.

If you go back and read my post, you will see I wrote dual citizenship, not residency. I plan on keeping my house here in Canada which is why I would go the dual citizenship route. Some social programs may be available to the original poster if he were to go the dual citizenship route, which is what I was saying,... that's all. Since I don't know the details of his disability its hard to comment on whether he was entitled to coverage or not, and from who. I am very lucky as my disability pension continues no matter where I live. I have a friend, who was married to a man in Texas, who came home for medical treatment as they just couldn't afford it. She stayed a green card holder and didn't want to do the naturilization route. Its hard to comment when you get so few details....hopefully with what everyone posted he can find some answers...take care.

If you are not physically present in a province for a certain amount of time each year, you will not be covered, citizenship or not. Each province has their own rules and regulations when it comes to residency and covering healthcare expenses.

For example, here are the eligibility requirements for the province of Nova Scotia:
QUOTE
To be eligible for Nova Scotia Medical Service Insurance (MSI) benefits you must be:

* a Canadian Citizen or ?Permanent Resident? (Landed Immigrant)
* a resident who makes his/her permanent home in Nova Scotia and is present in the province 183 days every calendar year.
* You must be registered with MSI to be eligible for benefits.

You can keep your home in Canada all you want, but if you don't plan on staying in it for the bulk of the year, you won't be covered, sorry!

Talk about a topic getting off course......the original poster has a disability...I responded as I too have a disability that is covered by the WCB of Nova Scotia and is covered no matter where I live, in terms of payments, medical treatment, doctor visits, meds, physio, anything relating to the injury. I was letting him know that depending on the cause of his disability, it could be possibly covered. He needs to check that out. Nothing to do with MSI. I don't know where he lives at so each province does have their own rules on medicare. I don't think personally, that if you have a major medical issue or issues, that moving to to the US would be a good idea under any circumstances. But that's just a personal opinion. I am choosing dual for a number of reason, my home, and if God forbid,I get seriously ill, I can come home, and the main reason, I am a Canadian born and breed...now possibly once I do move it will mean more to my honey that I am a US citizen and not a landed permanent resident but for now that's our plan.

I don't think the topic has gotten off course at all, actually. The OP wants to know the ramifications of moving to the US when one has disabilities/medical issues and their medications are covered by provincial healthcare. We are giving him info based on that.

The OP has a disability, but he did not mention Worker's Comp, which is a different kettle of fish, methinks. He mentioned WSP, which is British Columbia's healthcare program. This is what they list initially as their eligibility requirements:

QUOTE
An individual must be a resident of B.C. in order to qualify for medical coverage under MSP. A resident is a person who meets all of the following conditions:

* must be a citizen of Canada or be lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence;
* must make his or her home in B.C.;
* must be physically present in B.C. at least 6 months in a calendar year; and
* dependents of MSP beneficiaries are eligible for coverage if they are residents of B.C.

Pretty much the same as Nova Scotia.

The questions the OP must answer are: what are the requirements of his wife's healthcare insurance plan for adding a spouse? What are the ramifications of adding him to her coverage? Does he get disability payments, and do they carry over into the US? When all the information is gathered, what is the best plan for them -- together in Canada, or together in US?

I have a few major medical issues, and technically I had a short term disability at the time, but we did our research as far as health insurance was concerned, because it was a major factor in whether or not I would even be able to move to the US. Fortunately, my husband has been blessed with jobs that have pretty good insurance. Before the OP can make a decision, his wife needs to do some research into her policy and other things that we have brought up in this thread and then make a decision that is best for them.

CanadaVermont I-130 approvals
Everything -- and I mean everything -- at Vermont got put on the back burner around May or so to process naturalization petitions and I think it was the B2 visa?as well. It also didn't help that VSC absorbed a lot of different visa petitions from TSC earlier in the year. You think VSC is slow? TSC was horrible with a capital H. I don't know if they have ever recovered from that priority processing, sure doesn't look like it.

But like trailmix said, a year ago people were kvetching about how horrible CSC was and how fast VSC was......it flip flops back and forth all the time.

CanadaIf it wasn't for immigration
Interesting article, but I must respectfully disagree, particularly this paragraph and particularly the bolded:
QUOTE
Marriage is primarily an economic arrangement, an insurance pact. It differs from the ordinary life insurance agreement only in that it is more binding, more exacting. Its returns are insignificantly small compared with the investments. In taking out an insurance policy one pays for it in dollars and cents, always at liberty to discontinue payments. If, however, woman's premium is her husband, she pays for it with her name, her privacy, her self-respect, her very life, "until death doth part." Moreover, the marriage insurance condemns her to life-long dependency, to parasitism, to complete uselessness, individual as well as social. Man, too, pays his toll, but as his sphere is wider, marriage does not limit him as much as woman. He feels his chains more in an economic sense.

I don't see myself condemned to uselessness at all!

CanadaIf it wasn't for immigration
If it hadn't been for the immigration process -- and ours went relatively quickly in the 129f part -- we would have been married sooner, if my husband had anything to do with it! I, on the other hand, would have preferred to have taken some more time, but it's all worked out the way it was supposed to. smile.gif

CanadaWell
I came across this thread and I had to smile wryly.

I have been here just short of 4 years and this weekend I finally let go of what I call "my past life in Canada". And I think this is the first time I have truly felt settled here. Now don't get me wrong, there are days when I just want to be walking on Risser's Beach and then come home to my mom's blueberry muffins. But I have come to realize that the longer I hold onto the past, the longer I hold on to what I used to do and what I used to accomplish in my career and where I used to go, the longer it takes to focus on the here and now and the future with my precious husband. Trust me, I didn't get to this place overnight, but I am glad to finally get here. Don't get me wrong, this girl is a proud Canuck through and through, and that will never change, but I'm no longer counting what I have "lost" or all that I have given up or what is different.

And thetreble summed it up pretty well methinks:
QUOTE
Things will fall into place. Maybe your homesickness will never truly go away. Who the hell knows! Do know though, that it gets easier with time. You just broke off your relationship with your country and you may feel like she's mad with you. She is not. CanadaQuestions regarding cooking/baking
Heavy cream when whipped holds its shape better and longer. smile.gif

I found this info for you on a baking website:

"Whipped cream won't stay whipped for long, and it's best to prepare it immediately before using. If you need to work ahead, you can refrigerate it for up to 24 hours.

Just before serving, whisk the cream briefly by hand to thicken it up. It's not as billowy as on the first day, but it is fine to use. For longer storage, whipped cream can be frozen by teaspoonful on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. When frozen, remove to a resealable plastic bag and place back in the freezer."

oh, and for best results, make sure everything is super cold -- the cream, the bowl, the beaters/whisk, even the room you are working in shouldn't be overly warm.

omg today we went ALL over the place looking for a turkey breast. Wegmans didn't have it, shoprite didn't have it, finally went to Whole foods and found a free range breast but it was like 17.00! We could have just bought a whole turkey for that price. But after driving all over for most of the morning we decided to just get the free range turkey breast.

The phrase "free range" always makes me think of vast herds of chicken or turkeys being lassoed and herded by men on horseback...

hehe

My grandfather used to raise about 20 or so turkeys every year for Christmas dinner. He would let them out of their pen for a daily run around. The day they saw my mom hanging out sheets on the clothesline is a day of infamy in our family. free range, indeed! tongue.gif

Sprailenes: we had to settle for turkey breast loins (which are yummy, but kinda expensive). We then spent 40 minutes in the express line at Walmart to pay for it, sweet potatoes, and canned whole cranberries. If it wasn't for the fact that I really wanted to make some semblance of Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, I would have just dropped everything and left. mad.gif

The small ones are real turnips. The larger ones are known as rutabagas here. They're known as that in Canada, also..... it's just that they make them interchangeable there.

to me, turnips have yellowy flesh and have a strong taste, and rutabagas have white flesh and a much milder flavour
