Wow. What a ride, Cassie. No wonder your head hurts. Congratulations to you and your Mom! (As a side note... I registered as a bone marrow donor years ago but have never received a call. I think that's a good thing. unsure.gif )

My brother and I both registered while we were in university (mid-90s) on the unrelated bone marrow registry. He got a phone call in the late fall (2007)-- at first he thought something had gone wrong with Mom's transplant that had just taken place, until they explained that he was one of four possible donors for someone. I need to ask him if anything will be happening with that, I think he had to go have some blood taken again and they would get back in touch with him.

So last week my mom finds out that her bone marrow transplant may not have "taken" and we would have to wait for a set of results to confirm it.

She gets a call from her doctors today stating that December's test results are back and that the ratio of donor cells to her cells regressed even further.

Mild panic ensues.

15 minutes later Mom calls. The doctor read the test wrong -- the ratio is actually 2 to 1 (donor to recipient), instead of 1 to 2 -- because they reversed the order on the test printout.

Mild positive hysteria ensues.

10 minutes later I call to make sure the doctor is really sure she read it wrong. In the middle of that call the doctor calls.

Mild panic ensues again.

5 minutes later my mom calls back. The doctor called to tell mom that she ran the test results by the head of the transplant team to make sure she was right that she read the results wrong the first time. He confirms that the ratio is 2:1 and the planned bone marrow biopsy is now on hold until further notice.

Mild positive hysteria ensues again.

My head hurts. I need a stiff drink.

My roommates in college broke out a Ouija board one night and had most of the dorm in our room. Apparently it was going quite well and they were "talking" to something or someone until I walked into the room, and it started to flip out and start spelling out the word hate over and over. I told them -- ask him (apparently it was a civil war soldier or something) if he likes me. The immediate answer was no and the word hate over and over. I then told them to ask it why ---they spelled out c-h-r-i-s-t-i-a and then it went nutty again. I laughed and walked out, and apparently they had a hard time finding anything else to talk to after that. I am convinced to this day that it was reacting to the fact that I am a Christian. My roommates did not know at the time that I was, and I did not tell the people operating the stylus. That has been my only experience with a board.

So Americans are encouraged by the government to be loud and unruly when they visit foreign nations? blink.gif

In a sense, yes, they do. I say this because the U.S. educational system teaches virtually nothing about other cultures and societies between grades 1 to 12. Once a student reaches college, they can take classes on such material, but it's usually optional.

That's not the entire point of my comment, however. I don't understand why it's okay for "anyone else but an American" to act out when in the U.S., but a major ordeal if an American does the same in a foreign nation. Why the double standard? unsure.gif

Speaking as someone who worked in jobs for ten years that dealt directly with visitors from all over the world, I had the most trouble on the whole with American tourists, and it wasn't just with one or two of them a day, it was with the vast majority per day. Quite honestly, it was a very rare occasion when we had trouble or atititude with someone who was not from the US. So for me, it's not a double standard or holding US visitors to a higher standard of conduct (I would get just as frustrated with someone rude from Timbuktu as I would with someone from Texas), but reality.

Good idea, but many are just too lay to do a search, lol and they just ask away anyhow, but doesnt hurt to try!!

common questions:

1) can I visit the USA while my visa application is pending?

2) What kind of police check do I need? Do I need to get 1 for every place in Canada that I have resided

3)Which consulate do I go for the interview

4) Why are the Maple Leafs the worst team in the NHL?

My question is - why wouldn't we use the Wiki? A pinned thread always becomes old news and no one wants to read 48 pages to get their answer. Even if we pin all the questions at the top, sometimes the answers change and sometimes it may not address the person's situation. Plus people always post in the pinned thread.

Ideally people would go and look at the Canada Wiki and THEN post their questions here.

For example, all of the questions Flames has mentioned above, are answered in the Canada Wiki - except for the Maple Leafs one tongue_ss.gif

If we steered people to the Wiki - when they ask what kind of police check they need - then when they come back with a question that might provide us with information on how to expand it. But we don't, we just keep answering - which is ok, I have no problem with that - i'm just saying I like the wiki because it can be updated at any time.

Maybe instead of a FAQ we just need a nice link at the top of the Canada forum to the wiki page.

I agree trailmix. I was thinking after I posted of this as well. Does anyone remember that Cassie was also updating and was asking for input to revamping the Clearinghouse Thread which was pinned up top as well? She put a lot of work into it. Maybe we could have a Wiki link up there. Someone should see what Cassie has updated and what she has already that could be just placed on Wiki.

Aye, the way the ClearingHouse thread was set up was that I updated all the links and information on the very first post on the very first page, so that all the info would be current. As people found links and info, they would post it in the thread and then I would take it and put it all together in categories in one easy place. The idea kinda petered out once VJ was switched over a couple of years ago and all the links were broken. we tried restarting it over again and it just didn't keep going. I brought up the idea of reviving it but no-one seemed to care much about it, so honestly it should come down as a lot of the info in the pinned thread is kinda outdated.

Things I see a lot:

POE experience questions

Medical questions

importing a car

importing pets

moving stuff across a border when activating the visa

moving stuff across a border after activating the visa (someone bring it down for them, like family member or moving company)

montreal interview experiences

hotels in montreal

vancovuer interview experiences

vancouver hotels

where to find Canadian food in the states

access to Canadian TV shows, particularly HNIC

renewing passports while in the US / changing maiden to married name in passports

I'll add more if I think of anything smile.gif

Agreed, the first two statements are valid...

But why are you filing an NR73... did CRA request it... if CRA didn't request it, I would not file that form. It could open a whole can of worms that you don't want to open. All you need to file is a Leaving Canada return at the end of 2008. If CRA request an NR73 at that time, then I would do it then.

Hi zyggy,

In my case, I am permanently leaving Canada and have no plans to return as a resident in the near future; the earliest would be our retirement. That is why I am filling out the NR 73.

By a whole can of worms, what do you mean? whistling.gif

My wife and pretty much everyone on here was in the same boat.. the NR-73 is an optional form.. it is not required. Cassie is one of the only people that I know of who have filed that form.. All you have to do is file a leaving Canada reurn at the end of the tax year. Your responses on the NR-73 may lead Canada Revenue to classify you as a deemed resident of Canada even through you may not and once that determination is made, it's very difficult to get them to unmake it... Deemed residents of Canada must pay Canadian taxes on their worldwide income... until CRA decides that you are no longer a deemed resident.

I will say it again in the most strongest of terms.. Do not file that form unless CRA formally asks you to... you wouldn't want to paint yourself into a corner that you could have avoided.. Most cross border tax experts recommend that the NR-73 not be filed unless CRA formally requests it..

Only because my tax accountant told me that they couldn't file my last tax return without it, and they got that information from the CRA.

CanadaDaughter wants to return to Canada
My youngest son was 16 when we moved to the USA. He struggled for over a year trying to fit in here and make GOOD friends. He hated the school he went to, so he quit in grade 11. He did get his GED but I wanted him to graduate from High School. It is now 3 years later and sometimes I wish I have never brought him here. Alot of times I feel like I ruined his life by taking him from his home in Nova Scotia.

This is a way different life then what we were used to living. The US is gun crazy. Everyone and their dog owns one. I hate guns and am still not used to the idea that people carry them in their cars and on them 24/7.

Best of luck with your daughter. I know how it feels. rose.gif

So DCF still took around 6 months!! Thought it would be faster than that!! Guess things have really slowed down in Mtl!! I went the traditional way and had my cr-1 in 6 months! Guess its taking over a yr now!! How times chg!

Yeah.. the IR unit in Montreal is swamped... They've been swamped ever since they added DCF... it puts a lot more on their plate because they have to do a lot more work processing their own CR-1 visas. In the past a lot of the processing was performed by the NVC which really freed up their resources. So they esentially got a lot more work, with probably no increase in Consular Officers.

yeppers. DCF makes things easier for those couples who qualify, but it definitely has added to the workload in Montreal ( I still don't get why Vancouver can't process CR/IR-1s, maybe that will eventually change??? dunno).
