If a recipe (like my carrot cake or muffins) calls for a lot of oil, I substitute half the amount with applesauce. Cuts the fat and calories, makes them moister, yet still keeps some of the oil's effects on the end result.

I like my cucumbers straight up and uncomplicated. Salted, peppered, miracle whipped and placed in between two toasted pieces of bread. or sliced up with onions and marinated in red cider vinegar. So good as a side dish to grilled steak. Or blended up as part of a gazpacho soup. that's all I can tell you. smile.gif

Well tonight we're going to have left over Greek Pasta that I made the other day. Now last nights chicken, from the recipe that Marilyn gave us...OMG....talk about DECADENT!!!! It was incredible. I pounded out six boneless skinless chicken breasts, and spread the onion chive cream cheese on them, rolled them up, wrapped a bacon slice around them, inserted toothpicks...and viola! They were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!! Reminiscent of a "special" occassion meal, you certainly couldn't make them everyday, but I highly recommend them. Warning however, you should love cream cheese...otherwise I don't think you'll like them. I made up some Israeli grain mixture. (That's what it was called...) from Trader Joes and it was incredible also. Very nutty...and grainy. laughing.gif A broccolli slaw rounded things out.

I also made a rhubarb coffee cake the other day that was out of this world. Let me know if anyone wants the recipe.

now I want to make them too! smile.gif

and yes please for the coffee cake recipe!

Happy belated birthday to your husband Cassie! Sounds like you had a lovely meal, and the venue looks swanky! (Does anyone say swanky anymore?? wacko.gif )

I say swanky! smile.gif And yes it was definitely swanky (with a swanky bill to match! wacko.gif ) , but sooooooooo good. Beautiful ambience, nice music, fantastic food. We very rarely treat ourselves this way, so it was a very special date night and absolutely worth it. smile.gif

Last night I marinated chicken tenders in my special sauce -- a mixture of spicy or dijon mustard, lemon juice, garlic (either fresh or powdered), herbs, and olive oil. Hubster grilled them and he made himself a quesadilla while I had a grilled chicken salad. So good smile.gif

I answered for my husband -- he's working in Canada and his job will transfer to the US when he moves here. Working/working. I work. We both have responsibilities so we needed two salaries. (Mortgages, kids, etc.) We considered the K-1 and K-3 routes but decided neither were a good fit -- we needed two salaries and couldn't wait for advance parole for travel back and forth.

That's why the person who wants to ditch their debt irritated me. When you have responsibilities, you have to cover them. You don't ditch and run because you want to be together sooner. Most of us who went the CR1/IR1 route would have prefered to be together sooner and go K-1, but could never see shirking our responsibilities to do it.

I was with you until the last sentence. Please don't paint all K-1ers with the same brush. smile.gif

Morally, I just don't believe in trophy wives (or husbands) but I understand that some people out there don't care that their SO's don't work or have careers and that they make enough for 2 people to live on. I consider homemaking an occupation because you're taking care of the children and that's a choice between you and your spouse. Anyways, I'm just ranting and I just wanted to get a feeling for how many Canadians become contributing members to the US workforce.

What is a trophy wife or husband to you? Is this simply a spouse that does not work?

Can you not be a homemaker if you don't have small children at home?

I've considered myself as a homemaker when I was home and not working. Keeping the household running is a job IMHO, kids included or not!

To add to the above answer: up until two weeks before moving to the US, I worked. I didn't find a job until a year and a half after coming here. Volunteered lots though.

For proof of our engagement all we really have is the receipt from my ring. I got him a silver ring years ago and don't still have the receipt or anything for that. We don't have any pictures or video or anything for proof (from the day of our engagement, we have a lot of pictures just in general) because it wasn't a big to do.. so what other proof can we provide? What did you take to the interview?

Thanks in advance!

Marina

I took:
--my ring
--the ring receipt
--pictures of when we were engaged
--pictures from our wedding shower, and the emails that flew back and forth arranging for Jerry and his parents to come as a surprise
--"Congratulations on your engagement" messages from family and friends

stuff like that. Not that I had to show it, but I took it in case. smile.gif

Keep in mind also the population density issue. Canada has a lower population density than most countries our size. What does this mean? Tests such as MRIs are harder to get. It doesn't make financial sense (even in a purely capitalist model, as opposed to a socialist) to have an MRI in Bumf***, Ontario, population 1000, which happens to be an hour from the next town. (Apparently, there are places like this up north) You can't make back the operating costs.

Specialists are the same. They go to the cities where they are inundated by patients and the "country folk" have to wait. Yes, there are some issues in the cities (overcrowded hospitals in the most crowded areas), but a lot of it stems from the fact that our population is so extremely spread out!

I live in a village of 500. The nearest place with an MRI is about 30 minutes away. That town didn't get an MRI until five years ago. Prior to that, I think we had to go an hour and a half to get an MRI. The reasoning was that our area simply didn't have enough tests per year to justify the purpose and upkeep. When the MRI machines came down in price slightly, the area fundraised like mofos to get our MRI.

We ARE underserviced, yes, but the problem is made worse by the fact that we're spaced out all over the place!

Aye that sounds like when they fundraised like crazy down home to get a CT scanner in our hospital, which is considered a regional hospital. Now they're run off their feet because now people don't have to drive all the way to Halifax to get their CT scans done.

Hi, We haven't quite reached our interview stage yet (still awaiting pkg 3). I am wondering since we are getting into winter - how soon after we enter the USA does our belongings have to follow? We plan on hiring a moving company but if it is -50 I don't really want my glasswares being thrown around in a truck!

Is there a grace period to bring your belongings in? I have looked a few places but can't find the information. Also - does anyone have any moving companies they recommend?

Thanks!

The vast majority of my belongings were shipped to me via moving company almost a year after we were married. They were efficient, professional and extremely helpful -- even better, nothing was scratched or broken (and we had lots of fragile stuff involved).

Hello folks,

I'm still fairly new to the forums here, but I am planning on sending in the I-129F in a few months. The only real thing thats holding me back is this:

I currently live in Salt Lake City Utah, but I am planning on moving back to my homestate of Phoenix, Arizona sometime in March. If I remember correctly, I have to call or fill out a change of residence form when I do this correct? Not only that, but my fiance will be changing her address in the middle of all this too. She currently lives in Nova Scotia and she will be moving back to her hometown in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Does she have to submit the same type of form or because shes not the one who initiated it, does she have to do it or do I have to do it? I need some clarification please on how to handle this when the time comes. Thank you smile.gif

J

I (the non-USC) moved in the middle of the K-1 process. Once we knew the I-129f petition had been approved, and was on its way through NVC to Montreal, my husband (the USC) sent an email to Montreal stating that I had moved and here's the new address. he made sure that they had my full name, the A#, my Montreal case number (which he got from NVC), my old address, and new address. My "Packet 3" came to me at the new address with no problems.

CanadaGetting to Know You -
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Both. Wrapping paper for gifts I have to ship, mostly gift bags for those that are hand delivered

2. Real tree or Artificial? My preference is real, but my hubby is "allergic" <--- I have my suspicions! tongue.gif

3. When do you put up the tree? Ideally around the first of December

4. When do you take the tree down? Ideally right after New Year's.

5. Do you like eggnog? Heck no.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Strawberry Shortcake dolls

7. Hardest person to buy for? My Dad, who guesses everything before he opens it, or my in-laws.

8. Easiest person to buy for? Any of my nieces or nephews

9. Do you have a nativity scene? erm, i have at least 7!

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Any gift of clothing that didn't fit because I was fat!

12. Favorite Christmas movie? The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (animated version please!)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I start planning what I am going to make starting around June.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My mom's peanut butter balls, and my grandmother's plum pudding. Oh, and the "bubble ring" my mom makes to eat after Christmas Eve service.

16. Lights on the tree? Most definitely, and they have to be coloured.

17. Favorite Christmas songs: too many to list!

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Travel, either to the in-laws or to Canada.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? Yes

24. Favorite ornament theme or color? Angels, homemade ornaments, traditional colours.

25. Favorite food for Christmas dinner? I just plain like turkey dinner with all the fixings. I only get it twice a year, so it's a treat!

26. What do you want for Christmas this year? To see our brand new nephew, and for a safe trip home to Canada.

I had a stroke 2 years before applying for my K-1 visa, and was still under my doctor's monitoring for my blood thinner medication as a result of that. I had no difficulties with the medical. You're welcome smile.gif I noticed it a couple of weeks ago when Food Lion here had it on sale twofer. A couple of the "discount" (Fred's, Dollar General etc.) stores carry it here too, maybe check some of those around you.

Again though, sometimes the store brands will cost less and also don't have HFCS in them, just plain ol' sugar.

Hubby thinks I'm crazy, and sometimes a single grocery trip can take over an hour because I'm reading all the labels, but I just can't stand the stuff. Sometimes though, you just have to break down and give in. I can't find any tomato soup without it in, and I can't afford the shipping costs from Canadian Favourites. I also haven't been able to get home in over a year, and I don't think anyone is coming to visit any time soon tongue.gif

I will have to start doing some scouting around, because I refuse to pay more than $2 for a bottle of juice, and I miss my Ocean Spray. We usually drink straight up apple juice (no added sugar), but there are times that I hanker for cran-grape!

I hear you, grocery shopping used to be fun for me, now it's a big drag because all the time spent squinting at the fine print on the labels.

No wonder people hate Ontario people in other places...

This doesn't make sense at all, no offense. Since when am I personally hated by another Canadian because I'm from Ontario? laughing.gif

Makes perfect sence when talking to people from other provinces. I have been told that by friends that were from British Colombia, cousins in Alberta and family in Saskatchewan and Manitoba that they do not like people from Ontario and resent them for their mentality of 'we're the country'. I'm sure the french provinces aren't too fond of Ontario people either especially Quebec...

The same attitude can also be seen in the Maritimes a bit, we don't like being treated like the backwards cousins by the "Upper Canadians" -- whether that is a fair presumption or not!
