Happy Sunday! kicking.gif

Well, Saturday was indeed an adventure. I gassed up the car about 1pm and hit the road.

Destination: St Louis Missouri
Mission: Suprise everyone at the VJ meetup
Travel Time: 3 hours 47 min (before Rest Areas)
Entertainment: Several newly burnt CD's

I settled in on I55 South and hit the cruise control. Pack of smokes and a bottle of water and I was ready for my journey. I was going to meet more VJ'ers in person! I have a hard time passing up rest areas, so I had to check them all out. I love the French Vanilla coffee from the vending machines.

I get to St Louis (saw the arch!) and I was kinda nervous walking in the restaurant. Everyone was so nice and it was really special to meet people that I have talked with over the years. Thank you Carla and Gene for organizing this meetup. good.gif

So, it gets to be time to drive home and as I leave St Louis, I call Amal. We talked, and talked, and soon I had gone 50 miles. Well why hang up now, I have free weekends. We talked for 155 miles til my battery died. Man, did I get sleepy driving that last hour. It sucked. I was all nodding off. I rolled down the windows and changed the CD to Metallica. Nothing like some heavy metal to wake ya up.

That was my big adventure. If you ever get a chance to go to a meetup,,GO!

Jackie rose.gif

Yay for another Jackie Adventure!

Hard to believe you're awake, after all that driving I think I would still be in bed!

I hate driving while fighting that urge to nod off, not fun. Glad you made it home ok! biggrin.gif

Happy Sunday!

Ladies, I finally tried a pumpkin spice latte. I went to Starbucks yesterday while I was out shopping hoping they had the gingerbread lattes (hey all the other stores are all geared up for Christmas.....).....and they didn't have those...so I thought of all of you and ordered pumpkin spice. innocent.gif

No, I wasn't out Christmas shopping, I was out shopping for the my wedding (in 2 weeks wacko.gif !!!!!!!!!!!!) but I did wake up with Christmas music stuck in my head.

And I'll be quiet about Christmas now before all of you come and beat me with turkeys.laughing.gif

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments!!

Hi Monnik,
Wael was looking at the waybill and found out the number was the same one we used to return our packet 3 to the embassy....not the one that he paid for at the visa interview....as far as we can tell by the tracking number at DHL that number has never been used...

What a system huh...

So now don't know what to think as where is the waybill Wael paid for to send his passport back from the embassy!!

The same thing happened with Ramy but he knew that was how it was going to work when we sent back packet 3, I don't know how exactly he knew that and I didn't believe him till it happened! laughing.gif

I haven't called DOS in a while so I figured it was time. I got a very nice woman and she said right off the bat, "ma'am I'm showing that Cairo got back the results they were waiting for as of today and have now started the Administrative Review process."

I said, "was that the last step they were waiting for?" and she said, "that is what it looks like. according to the system they are starting to review the results of his case as of today and that is the final step"

<insert holding my breath smiley here>

I"m not going to do any dancing 'cause we all know the story but at least it was quite a promising conversation! I wonder if my congressman's office actually did something to get it going again? If so he's got MY vote next election!!! kicking.gif

QUOTE (sarah and hicham @ Nov 1 2007, 03:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
That's the problem- we have no idea exactly which entity is causing delays.

And we should. It's total BS that those who are still in AR/AP are still in the dark with no end in sight and DOS is no help whatsoever.

I mean...come on. At your job, you're expected to have something to show for the time you spend at your desk. For those on AP the end result most of the time is the same--you get the visa. If you're not going to get the visa you know that up front at the interview (right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong). Was there anyone on VJ who has sat in AR/AP for months only to be denied in the end? I don't think so. So why were they left waiting 2 months to a year? And why don't some wait at all? (BTW, when I called DOS during time we were in post processing, they told us we were in AR...so I think the two terms definitely are interchangeable.)

Note that what I said above does not apply to those who actually got the paper with the 221G checked. It only applies to those who had the interview, were told something and not given a paper at all like many in Cairo who were told they would be contacted in x weeks/months and hear nothing.

Most customer service reps at real companies would be fired if they treated us the way DOS phone operators do--I had one woman answer the phone with her mouth full who just started interrupting me and not listening and all the rest. Give me a break, what the hell are we paying such high fees for for such poor service?

Medo and I are stll in AP. The lady who takes care of imagration at the senators office sent Cairo a email and is waiting to hear back from them. I emailed Cairo telling them I will be there and would like to talk to a officer. Dead End!!!! but atlease they know I will be there. And I will go to the embacy when im there. It took Medo 5 mo just to get that interview and now we have been on AP for 9 mo's. I read the artical in the Washington Post and thought it was great. Im happy people hear about how the uscis handles things. And yes there was some bad comments. But its not like we haven't heard them befor. I have heard them from my own family and friends. I can handle that. What I cant handle is this 9 mo's of AP and them not giving me a bit of info on our case. mad.gif

Welll Im not stopping with just one article. This isn't right to put peoples lives on hold for sooo long. This is the AMERICAN EMBASSY IN Cairo. Its OWNED by the good old USA. ALL embassy's should fall in the same regulations and have the SAME proceedures. When we go into that embassy WE are on USA soil. (So they SAY) Therefore when WE call, or go there WE are entitled to the SAME rights as here at home. We pay them for this service. Its not just the wait on the NOA2 that gets me...its the entire process. Some countries aren't so bad...but even Britain has its "terrorists". We (MENA) are being discriminated against on our OWN soil. If they were on AMERICAN soil HERE.....civil rights activists would be ALL OVER this. But the truth is they ARE standing on US Soil..when they enter that embassy. And should be treated with the same respect as if they were HERE. I dont care if the Embassy employees Egyptians, Brazilians, British or Turkish...its STILL American Soil and should be conducted under those rules of conduct. WE should insist on it. Not just asking for help with our petition s but help in changing the laws/rules that got us here.

Sorry...Im just rambling...Im just very passionate about the flaws in the system....

RIGHT ON WOMAN KEEP ON RAMBLING good.gif And I will be useing some of them words when I get there and go to the embassy! I will be insisting on getting in there and seeing a officer. If they dont let me in at lease they will know Im there.

Thats right girl..you ROCK. We get better treatment at the EGYPTIAN CAIRO AIRPORT as US Citizens than at that Embassy. I just feel the whole SYSTEM is broken. From start to finish. We Filed in JUNE. (19th) VSC used to be the fastest now they haven't even started June petitions yet. They are approving VJ memebers the last 2-3 months at 15 petitions a month..at this rate I'll be LUCKY to have my noa2 in January....7 months after filing THEN to wait in a super long AP/AR??? I figure why "signal" out MENA....most countries get their visas that day or within 2 weeks...If we have to do it...ALL should do it...if they dont have to...WE shouldn't have to. It should be FAIR and EQUAL. The process should be the SAME no matter what consulate you use. It should be seamless with USCIS and DOS. There should be ONE service center to call for questions...and every move made on our petitions should go into the computer that is linked to one central server..so CS reps can update our status...why Yes Mrs Medo...your petition has finished the name checks and is currently being reviewed by your consular officer. There should be set time limits for this work. Every office if it works the same as the others should have enough resources so when they are over staffed those employees can be sent to understaffed offices to help "catch up". English language should be required in all offfices so this can be done. SEAMLESS. Efficient...fast..informative. This is ONE process so why is it being handled as 2-3 "processes". first noa2..then nvc..then embassy..then DOS. And why isn't DOS and name checks done BEFORE going to embassy???????

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Yes, because tears work at the airport but not USCIS or DOS. The Cairo airport is so nice if you're bawling your eyes out! At least when it comes to a carryon bag being 7 kilos overweight....laughing.gif

Tears on the phone...nope. They're all cold-hearted parrot DRONES! "You mean...he might not be here for over a year? -sniffle- That SUCKS!" "Yes Ma'am, it does suck." blink.gif And yes, one of the people at VSC really did say that to me.

And then NVC entered my name wrong in their system...first of all, their freaking internal computers should be seamlessly integrated. Large corporations have integrated programs where they can pass info from an accounting program to a customer management system to whatever etc etc etc. And if we're paying so damn much, maybe they should eliminate a couple steps and integrate their systems or -gasp- even use the same one! What purpose does it serve to enter my name twice in the system? They're acting like their computers pre-Windows 95 and we all know that's probably not true. I'm amazed by how inefficient this government agency is especially for the amount of importance it carries.

I'm babbling, carry on! smile.gif

Don't leave! I mean it looks like you're sticking around now but pleaseeeeee stay. rose.gif

Can I function without Ramy here? Sure. But I'll tell you when I first came back from Egypt and started this process that it was damn near impossible to function for a lot more reasons than the fact Ramy wasn't here--mostly I hated my job at the time with a passion so who the hell wants to drag themselves in when they know they could have stayed in Cairo and the damn job would not have been an issue? whistling.gif

So I got 2 new jobs and worked myself to death and as the months passed I realized eastern CT isn't so terrible after all...but it really did take getting a new job to get me to realize I can function without him here. There were some rough patches like when my grandmother was in the hospital for a month right at the time he got his visa and I wanted him here NOW...but she got better and I got better.

But it's not easy, I wouldn't say it's easy for anyone.

From a journalism perspective, this article really pissed me off at how incomplete it was and how little research the reporter actually presented.

Polarbear, I don't have the link but I know it's floating around the topic "Waiting for an NOA2 from VSC for your I-129F?" Actually VJers are the ones who contacted the right people to get the article in the Washington Post. Amrssnowangel is even quoted in it (way cool!).

Somehow I missed the whole bit where there were some nasty comments and now I can't even read them! As negative as I heard they were, I still wanted to see them.

I have other comments on the article but I will keep most of them to myself for now, at least until I get home and read the article again. I just feel like the article, even published front page, really didn't do the separation and the anxiety of this process justice and dropped the ball. It had the potential to be so much more than it turned out to be.

We'll see, sometimes a ripple can turn into a huge wave (or however that saying goes)...

2, 3 months from now I'll either still be saying that or he'll be here. Or maybe I'm just like this because my house is far from being ready for him. I've been cleaning for like 2 months straight and it looks like I haven't done a damn thing! laughing.gif

Advance Parole sounds like something having to do with jail, doesn't it? laughing.gif

Advance Parole is what AP means for a lot of people on VJ, because it's something a lot of people file after their SO arrives in the states and they want to travel back to their home country without being barred from entering the states upon arrival. Like the K1 is a one-time entry visa, so if they leave they can't come back without advance parole. It's something filed during AOS. It has nothing to do with the MENA AR/AP. (Isn't that a relief? lol)

Does anyone know how to get a VHS tape onto a DVD?

Cheryl-- Maybe I do things the hard way but I have to hook up my VCR to this USB thing that goes into my laptop, and then I can pull the video feed from that and burn it to a DVD. The connector for the computer cost me about $50 from Best Buy. $50 might seem like a lot but if you need to pull a video feed from something else...say an older 8mm camcorder that doesn't have a USB connector, then the one I have can be used with that too...basically anything that has an audio/video output or an S-video output. It depends on the program and your computer too though--my 2005 laptop didn't have a fast enough processor for the DVD editing program so I ended up getting another laptop. lol (Sorry I'm a geek at heart and I could talk about this stuff all day, and I love to edit videos too--I just posted a video of my grandfather who passed in 1989 on YouTube and it was such a relief to have a backup of the old VHS!) Not only that but when you transfer from the tape to your computer it's amazing how much more clear the video is.

Jackie-- You can do it! I loved all your other designs.

Aymerlu-- even if you did sign a covenant not to compete, if he didn't do it properly then sometimes those wouldn't hold up in court anyway. I signed one for my last job but it was a ridiculous one line thing saying we couldn't work for any competitors for 2 years or something, it wasn't properly written and we weren't given copies of it...compare that to the 5 year one I signed for my current job, where it was drawn up by a lawyer and I have a copy, etc etc. I've never heard of covenants not to compete for Dr.'s offices...not like it's retail or internet retail or whatever! Best of luck to you smile.gif

Went for what was supposed to be my final wedding dress fitting last night. The dress is done...but the matching jacket was first two small, and now it's too big! We're not sure what we're going to do about it...we don't have fabric to make another jacket so I think we're going to let out the seams on the sleeves of the small one as much as we can and hope for the best.

Work today, work tomorrow....but tonight's the last night I have "free" to clean my house and as of right now I might be taking one of my coworkers who is helping me SO much with the wedding to dinner to meet my uncle, who is also helping me.

I can't wait for this wedding! It's going to be a blast...my uncle has all kinds of surprises up his sleeves because he used to cater elaborate weddings in Florida all the time. I know a few of the surprises, but I'm not telling Ramy a thing! laughing.gif

Hi everyone!!

Well, after a big scare about the flight being cancelled, it finally departed 4 hours later from Amman. This was not such a bad thing, there was originally supposed to be a nearly 6 hour layover for him in Paris, but because of the delay, it was only 2 hours. This was a good thing, since he wasn't tempted to wander off somewhere, lose track of time and miss his connection! He landed in Detroit at about 6:30 pm. The whole process only took about 2 1/2 hours total, including his POE. He said that the people at the immigration office were very nice and also very helpfull with his paperwork. Appparently the hardest part of his POE was finally getting home! I got lost on the way back and added nearly an extra hour to our drive. Leave it to me! LOL
So far everything is really great. One of my biggest worries were how he and my sons would adjust to each other, but so far so good. The biggest problem there is the communication issue, and the fact that they are loud and rowdy at times. Hopefully once the newness of him being here wears off some, we will find an even keel with that.
I can't describe the feeling of having him here, how good and right it seems. I had worried about how we would react with each other after 10 months of being apart. Where would we be when he got here? How long would it take to adjust to each other again? Everything just seemed to just fall into place so naturally that I guess I did all that worrying for nothing.
So far we haven't done much except to shop a little for halal foods and get used to the house and where everything is at. I expect this next week we will do a little more shopping to get him ready for a Michigan winter, and do some sight seeing.
I hope to read some really good news here on vj soon about some other's getting the interviews, some NOA2, some visa's issued! Knowing how hard the wait time is only makes the arrival so much more the sweeter.
Special thanks to Wendy for driving with me to the airport and waiting with me. It was so great to meet her and spend some time with her after having chatted with her for so long! Thank YOU Wendy.
Hey Melissa? Where are YOU girl? I miss our chats, and I worry that you are doing okay. Talk to me girl! Love you sis!
Prena! Sorry, but you know I am an addict to being online, I really tried to stay away for a whole week, really I did! LOL Love you sis! I can't wait for the four of us to get together!!!

Yayyyy Tammy I'm so happy for you smile.gif. I don't think I'll be able to stay away from VJ for a whole week when Ramy gets here either, actually I'll be around MORE looking up exactly what we must do for AOS! laughing.gif

What was his POE? Do you know how long it took from start to finish? I"m still trying to guage JFK. I can't believe you're online but again congratulations! lol

LOL I'd hardly say I'm back online laughing.gif From start to finish didn't take long, maybe 30 minutes after he got out of line...his plane landed at 2:45 (early!) and he was in line for 2 hours and then they sent him I guess to a place where everyone in front of him was getting deported, so he thought he was going to be sent back too. When they were done with him he asked them where to go next (he meant for his bags or for me) and they told him to go home laughing.gif He was such a wreck when he finally came through the gates at 5:15 though, and I'd been waiting at JFK since around 2:30 so I was a wreck too.

JFK is hard to gauge I think because if a lot of planes land at once (5 landed around the time of his) you'll get stuck in line a lot longer.

Ramy's in the shower so I'm checking my email and internet stuff as fast as possible ph34r.gif
laughing.gif His entry was ok, he was stuck in line for a long time and then at one point he thought he was being deported so when he finally came through the gate he was all nerves!

I show them the MO rcpt and they have my payment right there in front of them. Lovingly applied to apartment 813 instead of 513.

.........and that's the point where I would have blown a gasket! Don't they check everything twice before sending out eviction notices?!?!??!?!?!! I would totally be reaming them a new one over that.

-hugs-

Morning everyone! :energetic:

It's raining. I'm mailing my wedding invitations...I know it's wicked late to be doing so but everyone already told me if they're coming or not and the 4 I'm mailing is just because they asked for proper invitations...hahaha!

My uncle is helping me with the wedding and we started buying duplicate things so now we're trying to iron out things we have to return--I bought 16 plastic crappy table covers, my uncle rented actual linens...lol...sooooo I have to add "rushing around to return stuff" to my big to-do list.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Pumpkin spice stuff is still at Starbucks for the time being...

Morning!
I figured it was time to take dwn my halloween avatar....but I cant find anything I like that much. Thats all I'm doing for now, just avatar searching.
Who here has myspace? I started one a while ago thinking it would be cool to blog...and then I never wrote anything. Does anybody here blog? Somebody inspire me, please. (or at least set me up with something different to read)
Have a good day everybody!

I have myspace! For a while I was trying to do a weekly update to keep my friends and old co-workers posted on Ramy's immigration/wedding plans but the closer we get to the wedding the more my posts have just become bullet points because I'm so tired!

I also have a blogger account where I started the ME/NA VJ stories, but...I haven't posted yet either. I have two other blogs on blogger, one about "Is this your license plate" and another about local (CT/RI) history and abandoned houses.

And I have livejournal too, which is almost the same as the myspace but I had that first. lol
