CanadaK1-INTERVIEW FILE PREPARATION
I'm not nervous about the interview at all....I'm concerned that I can stay awake to drive the 14hrs to get there! I am going to head to my parents place on Saturday, that will get rid of three hours, then drive the rest on Sunday. I have my medical on Monday. They said I can pick it up on Thursday, and then the interview Friday, then 14hrs back home driving. YUK! Then to top it off I work a 12 hr shift Sunday. Ain't like grand! hahaha I did do a search last night and found a parking lot that the prices aren't bad that says they are 500 meters from the embassy. Parking is free if you spend $25 bucks in the shopping complex or $16 for the day. Now to get my hotel info from my sweetie! He's looking after that for me. The week long process will end up costing us about $1500. Its my goal to try and get it down to $1300. Hey guys I'll let you know how I do!

Don't worry, Poprocks. They don't ask for proof of the wedding. I also don't recall being required to bring additional proof of relationship. The interview is pretty much a formality for the straight-forward cases. You'll be fine.

Thanks Krikit, makes me feel better! smile.gif I just hope the IRS trans make it in! I would hate to be turned away for insufficient docs sad.gif gotta stay positive!!!! smile.gif

Well, even if you do have insufficient docs, they'll just hold the visa until you send them in. Not a biggie.

Hi everyone,
Im new to this site and I am an approved green card holder but I do have a question about past experiences crossing canadian/usa borders with a u haul. There is very little information out there as to how it works, which lanes to cross in ex. commercial lane, bus lane or car lane? Im going back to Canada this weekend to bring personal belongings to the usa and need some experiences and guidance. Thank you so much ! Cheers

As far as I know you can transport your personal belonging within one year of activation of your visa (for duty not to apply)... I orginally came over with a Uhaul when I activated my visa ... I crossed at the Peace Bridge and used the Car/Bus lane ... I had a complete listing of what I was bringing over ... quite frankly they didn't even open the back of the truck.

You actually have 10 years from your initial crossing with your visa to bring your personal belongs across. I haven't brought stuff yet, we are going back to get it. I asked the Border Patrol Officer so I would know for next time and he said to use the car/bus lane and they will redirect you from there if necessary. Here is a great reference guide to look at.

CanadaCan outstanding student loans keep me from getting Canadian Passport?
QUOTE (SapphireDreams @ Oct 23 2009, 10:47 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
OKay, well take a deep breath and take things one step at a time.

First, get your passport. Before you even think about the immigration process, get yourself a passport and that will act as your valid ID. Or, if you need to take a step back and get ID for the passport, figure that out first. There may be some hiccups along the way, and just deal with those as they come.

Once you get your passport, move on to getting yourself in-status in the United States. Ensure your husband has a passport/birth certificate as well for this step.

Once you get all that sorted out, then you should start the AOS.

You've made some mistakes and the only way to fix them is going to be to stop freaking out and get started on fixing them.

Good luck. And, I seriously mean that. I'm not here to judge you. People make mistakes and that's okay. Now, you are in control of your own destiny, so if you want to gain respect from others you need to do everything in your power to fix things. You have the resources and information to fix this, so there is no excuse to hold off on things anymore.

CanadaCan outstanding student loans keep me from getting Canadian Passport?
Well I would think, and this is just a personal opinion, that if your loans are up-to-date then no it doesn't affect it. But if you are in default and they can't find you, so to speak, when you apply for a passport,...its government..who would share your contact info with the Student Loan people, also government. So if your up-to-date then no it won't effect you. Good luck.

Canadahow much tax do we pay when we import a car
As long as you just didn't buy the car...no you don't pay anything other then the $6. bucks at the POE. Make sure you have your letter or letters for the manufacturer. GM did separate ones, one for the safety and one for the emmission controls standards. Then you'll have to register and lisc. it in whatever state your moving to. They also tell you that if you sell it within two years, then you will have to pay duty on it.

Honestly looking at your timeline, its not bad. Ours left NVC December 31, 2008 and we didn't get an interview till April 17/09. At we really didn't get much notice from the time we were notified of the interview and the interview. If you decided to do it, I would address it as a letter of concern as opposed to a complaint letter. Good luck and I hope your interview comes soon.

I know that my timeline is not bad yet. I'm so frustrated when I hear that I have to wait 4-5 months just to get an interview.I thought I can do something before it gets to that point.

I feel for you both, I do. I called to check to see if we would have an interview soon...that was after 3 months and they said it could be another 3-4 months before I got my interview....I still called every couple days. Then two days later I had my interview. If you want to write a letter I would write one on your own....from your heart rather then a form letter that they have seen before with just different names on them. Tug on their heart strings!
Good luck.

I left my job two weeks before moving, then applied for EI a couple days after entry. I didn't have any problems, they keep sending me cards, I keep sending them back but I won't get a cheque till after I give them a copy of my EAD once I get it. They have yet to tell me that though. I get a letter from then every couple of weeks that says "keep sending in cards while they are working on my case". Best of luck with you move.

CanadaCandian marrying American in U.S.
My only concern is that you stated "you made the move" to the US considering marriage and if this would be considered moving with intent to marry. If you left a job etc and actually "moved your life" here it may be hard for you to prove no previous intention to marry. We thought about me coming to the US and staying six months, seeing how it went, and then getting married but then it wasn't worth the consequences if I ended up deported. We did the K-1 visa, which seemed like it too forever but looking back it wasn't that bad. I am here now, legally and are getting married next month. I only wish the K-1 allowed more time the 90 days. I am sure more people with previous experience with this will post and give you advice. Good luck.

Hi again, your sending him passport papers, he has to apply for his passport in the US, not a Canadian one. He's a US citizen, so he needs a US passort.
Also, I found this on the web, check it out....

CanadaDeferred Probation and Visitation Rights
I can't tell you that, you might want to check into it more. Its ultimately the POE officer who decides if entry is allowed. I know I've read of DUI convictions, drug convictions etc, keeping people from entering Canada. If he's done this month with probation, check to see if he has to apply to have the record closed or if its automatic. Does he already have a passport?
Wis-CanFemaleCanada2009-11-10 11:26:00
CanadaDeferred Probation and Visitation Rights
Now this is just my understanding of it, but if he got deferred probation, then he pleaded quilty/no contest as thetreble stated. And, as long as he doesn't violate the conditions and its completed a record will still exist. I think he needs to file a request or petition to close it. You might want to get him to check on that before you apply to bring him to Canada. You don't want anything to possible get in the way of you being together. Good luck.

CanadaVehicle Compliance/Clearance
Like I said previously, I was told by the POE that it didn't have to be when I crossed. I actually had to ask about my car when I was there. And he replied, "oh, you want to import your car now...you can do it at a later date" but I already had everything so I did it then. You have to have it done before you can register it so they know that now or later, either way that you will get it done. Good luck

CanadaVehicle Compliance/Clearance
I went throught GM in Ontario and got both my letters. They faxed me both, but sent me hard copies in the mail. They took copies of both at the border and gave me back the originals to take to the DMV when I go to license and register my car. You need your compliance letter and your recall letter. They asked me for both at the POE along with my ownership paper. It has to state that your car meets emission control standards for the year it was built.. I just went on the Honda Canada Website and it appears they do theirs a little differently. There is a number there to call for US Honda to get what you need. Hopefully they don't charge you twice. Mine was $85 bucks for the two letters. I didn't realize when I crossed that I didn't have to import my car at that time. He said I could have done it at a later date. Oh well... here's what the website said.

What documentation do I require if I am moving to the United States and I want to take my Honda vehicle with me? Will my warranty be valid in the United States?
Usually, Canadian Honda vehicles can be taken with you when you are moving to the United States. There are exceptions based on whether a vehicle complies with State and Federal Safety Regulations for the United States. If a vehicle is eligible to be brought into the United States, you will need to obtain specific documentation to produce either at the border crossing point, and/or at the state motor vehicle licensing office at your destination, as follows :

You will need a recall clearance letter from Honda Canada stating that there are no outstanding recalls on the vehicle. Contact the Honda Canada Customer Relations Department on our toll-free line, at 1-888-946-6329 and request a "Recall Clearance Letter". Have your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available when you call, as we must quote it in the letter we prepare for you. Recall Clearance Letters will only be provided for individuals who are exporting a Honda for their own personal use. Letters are not supplied for commercial exporters of used vehicles.
You will also need a compliance letter from American Honda to stipulate that your Canadian vehicle complies with the applicable U.S. safety and emissions requirements. You must contact American Honda at their toll-free number, 1-800-999-1009, and request a "Compliance Letter". Have your VIN ready as American Honda will require it in order to provide the letter.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

CanadaImporting a Vehicle: Is the compliance letter always necessary?
I really think it depends on the POE. My guy took out a manual to "follow along to make sure he got it right". There are guidelines to follow, but like anything else..its only as good as the person doing to job. Better to have too much info then not enough to get the job done. Good luck.

CanadaImporting a Vehicle: Is the compliance letter always necessary?
I came through in September at Sault Ste. Marie. I had to ask to import my car, (you can wait and do it at a later date, just an FYI). They wanted both letters and a copy of my ownership paper. They made photocopies for themselves and gave me back originals. He had to pull out his manual he told me to make sure he was doing it right. Then they stamped my ownership paper and wrote on it. He laughed and said its so much easier to import a car into the US then it is to import it back to Canada. I told him hopefully that won't ever be necessary!

CanadaDeadline to submit document after interview
QUOTE (maplestar @ Nov 19 2009, 04:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I had my AOS interview on Tuesday morning and it was pointed out that they needed my long-form birth certificate. I had submitted the only birth certificate I have, the wallet-sized card, but because it doesn't have my parents' names on it, they won't accept it.

I received the letter today giving a 4-week deadline of Dec. 17th to submit the document. So (having heard back from somebody who is eligible to be my guarantor), I submitted the application online for the birth certificate.

Now my worry: the province doesn't make any guarantees about service times, if it's being mailed internationally. If one submits online and it's being mailed within Canada, they guarantee it within 15 business days. If I take that guaranteed time (ignoring the fact that it doesn't apply when the birth certificate's mailed to the U.S.), and work forward, I get Dec. 10th. Which is a little close for my comfort.

Is there a procedure to extend the deadline? If so, should I pre-emptively request an extension now, or should I wait to see if the document arrives in time to meet Immigration's deadline?

P.S. I wish they wouldn't use such black-and-white language in their notices "You have until December 17, 2009 (4 weeks) to submit the required documents or your application will be denied."

I ordered mine online (Nova Scotia), came in like 3 or 4 days if I remember correctly.

CanadaWeird Things Americans Have Said To/Asked Me
While working at a 93 room hotel and convention facility in dear old Nova Scotia a few years back we had a bus tour in from Kentucky and one of the passenger came to the front desk to ask me where we bought our groceries at. I had a hard time keeping a straight face. Then another American couple on another occasion brought out a map of the town of Amherst and asked me where she could see some wild animals...I replied, the Elm Tree Tavern...or as I like to refer to it, the Pick a Pig.

I don't exactly know why Reagan was so bad. I'm guessing they didn't have as much snow removal / deicing equipment as the other two local airports. IAD (Dulles) and Baltimore do a lot more international flights too, so perhaps they get a bigger budget? I've never flown through Dulles, so I really don't know what it's like. Reagan is a relatively small airport.

Just be glad you're flying into Baltimore!

Apparently my honey said that the gate agent told him when he wasn't sure if he should to take the Washington flight into Dulles, that it was his best bet to get a connecting flight into Canada that wasn't booked solid. She recommends it to most travelers when weather is an issue to try and get where they want to go.

CanadaThe weatherman is the Grinch
You've been lucky never to have had a problem. Here's hoping this year will go smooth as well. Last christmas I was in Nova Scotia and my honey flew up from Wisconsin. What was suppose to be a six hour total flight, ended up being three days before he reached me, and lost luggage that was never found till the day before he went back home...he came for two weeks. They flew him all over hells creation trying to get him on a connecting flight, then the agent I spoke to told me they could fly him into Montreal right away, could I pick him up there......yes, its only a 14 hr drive, let me jump on Santa's sleigh as he goes by. As I was trying to get him on a flight that came into Halifax, he actually jumped on another plane to Washington in hopes of a connecting flight, and it paid off. He arrived Christmas Eve at 1 in the afternoon. I was so happy to see him! Oh, this probably depressed you...wasn't my intent. We kinda laugh at the whole thing now. Take care, and hopefully smooth flying for you both ways. Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the visit.

HI there, you need to inform your insurance company of your move. They need to decide whether they will insure you or not. My insurance company, (Wawanesa) covers my car, I've been here since September and they are covering me till 7th of January or longer if I need it. Now I have my Wisconsin license, car registration and lisc. done so I can now get insurance here. They weren't going to cover it at first, and then after a couple calls they agreed to. But not before doubling my premium. Good luck.

CanadaPOE Review and a couple of questions...
Sometimes they take the fingerprints, sometimes they don't. I don't think it really matters considering they make you take biometrics when you adjust status anyways and they do your fingerprints then. My I-94 also says multiple entries on it. Apparently according to border patrol when I called they "all" say that now, but that its up to you to know that your a K-1 visa is a one time entry. Glad you POE visit went relatively well. Take care.
