Canada2010 Tax thread - For Canada and the U.S.
Does anyone who's done the filing of the Canadian Tax returns since coming here give me an idea on how long it took them to complete your return? Basically I just wanted to know if it takes longer because of "not" residing in Canada.

I had my expresspost envelope folded in half, the lady at the consulate actually unfolded, took out a ruler and measured it and then compared it to the one she had posted on the wall. GIVE Me A BREAK!! I tell ya, its the whole make them jump through hoops thing! I bought the biggest one they had, and $25 bucks later it passed the test! LOL

I've had many people send me PMs regarding the forms and the number of copies we had to submit. So, I thought I'd post our experience here!

Anyway, I printed one copy of everything (156, 156K, 160 online and confirmation page, DS-230, and I-134). Then, I made 2 copies of each. When we were at the first window the first time, he asked for 2 copies of every form - I think except the 156K. That's the "don't sign until in front of consular officer form". So, with my original and 2 copies, I gave him the original and one copy of everything. That way, just in case, I'd still have a copy for my files if necessary. Good thing I did!

I think some people think 2 copies means original plus 2 copies. From our experience, what they're looking for is an original signature on at least one on a form plus a copy of the form/signature is good OR two original signatures on two forms (if you can't make copies).

Hope this helps!

I really think it depends on who you get at the window. A fellow V'jer was beside me, and I noticed he asked for originals and copies of things the lady asked only for one copy from me. The only original thing she asked to see was my 1-134 and I had a notorized one that was sent to me and the original birth certificate. Everything else was just a photocopy. I had all this paper with me and took the majority of it back with me. I hardly got asked any questions, at the window or at my interview. She sent me to pay my $131 visa fee and told me to come right back to her. Alot of people I noticed were went to pay their fee and then had to sit back down and wait. I had good luck all around. At least I have copies for myself!

I actually bought work with me. YUK! But its things I need to get finished up. I think I will go roaming today or tomorrow. I'm getting a cold so I would rather just stay in bed! I bought a GPS for myself at Christmas time, its paid for itself 10 times over on this trip. Those things are wonderful. No matter how many times I didn't make the turn it told me to, it still got me where I was going. Well for those that are there on Friday, see ya then!

Hey guys had my medical today at Medisys. Got there an hour early, since I didn't know where I was going, or where to park or anything else. So I went in and they started me right away. I registered, filled in a sheet of paper asking about previous illnesses, etc, the normal stuff and before I had it completed I was whisked off for my x-ray. Then I sat for about 45 minutes, then the doctor called me in. Very quick medical. Just asked me about my meds, and hospital visits. Then put me behind a curtain and told me to get undressed leaving on my undergarmets. Then he came back in, took my blood pressure, checked my throat and ears, listened to my lungs. Then I layed on the table and he listened to my heart, pressed on my stomach a few times, then he squeezed my ankles and that was it. Then I sat back out in the reception area and about 20 minutes later got called my the nurse for height, weight, quick eye test, and the blood work. Then I sat back out there again and about 10 minutes later, got called to the reception, paid then some cash and told I could pick it up in two business days. YEAH!! Consulate interview here I come!! FYI- parking in the Medisys building was only $5.00 for a close to 4 hours. I was impressed. Its not that far of a walk to the consulate so I think I will park there on Friday.

My Petie wants to do the whole Vegas Drive Thru Wedding. I really don't care...I get the same end result, I get to marry the love of my life! I'll still get to have my dress and him in a tux. Then he wants to have a little get together at our house in Wisconsin. I don't know anyone but his family so it really doesn't matter to me. I will get a wedding cake though. I know... usually the woman is going crazy planning a wedding, not me. Doesn't interest me in the least. Now, planning the interior decorating of the new house... I'm all over that! LOL

Well my packet 4 came today. So I thought I would take a run to the post office and get my National Express Post Envelope. Another $25. bucks gone. WHOLLY! Just wanted to tell everyone that doesn't know already when you buy one of those envelopes you need to tell them that you want to purchase the signature sticker ahead of time. I said to the guy at the counter, it's going to need signature request, he said no problem, when it gets dropped in the mail they tell them at the post office. (However, they are charged to put the little sticker on it to require signature.)
The lady that was working at the next wicket overheard me and said to him, I think she wants to purchase the signature required sticker ahead of time. Just in case anyone didn't know. We don't want anything holding up the process.

Hey I also seen it the letter it says you can pay US 131. or the Canadian Equilv. I think I will just go get the US cash.

Ok so now that we have our interview date, we are stressing a little bit and begin to be so confused about what to bring at the interview .. lol

So in the interview letter, they did not specify what to bring at the interview except for pictures, visa, express post envelope, DS-156, DS-160, 131$ US in cash and such. So my question is ... What documents do I need to bring at the interview and which ones need to be notarized ????
I know a lot of people asked similar questions but we can not seem to find a thread where all the information is together and right now we are very confused.

Also, they ask to bring DS-156 and DS-160 .. do I need to bring both ? I thought DS-160 was replacing DS-156 unsure.gif

Thanks in advance for your help everyone smile.gif

Your packet 3 has the checklist that tells you everything you need to bring. I know alot of people bring extra, myself included, I think it just makes a person feels better for some reason. They sent me a I-134 Affd.of Support that had to be notorized. I noticed some people had ones that had to be, while others not. Mine was, so Peter had it done. We had the letter from the bank stamped and signed as well just to be on the safe side. That was it. We made copies of everything and I am bringing the originals for inspection if needed as noted in packet 3. Good luck!

So he called them first thing this morning, and they had it ready for him at lunch time. They charged him $16.00 for the letter, and then when he got to the post office the soonest they could get it to me is 5 business days and they charged him $26.00. Talk about an expensive letter! Oh well, I should get it by Wednesday next week.
Now its just picking up the express post envelope for Montreal and photos to get done and I will be all ready.

$16 for a letter that states when he opened the account and the current balance? That is indeed an expensive with the shipping sad.gif

I agree, We're almost scared to actually sit down and figure out how much this whole process has cost so far with the running around to get things, the costs and fees for everything. Today I called about my emission standards letter to bring my car across the border and that's going to cost me $85 dollars. When will it end! No wonder there are so many illegals living in the US.

We didn't bring any taxes - just his W2 from 2008, a letter from his employer and pay stubs and the affidavit. However we also had a bank letter with a bank account with a very large sum of money in it, so I think that definitely helped our case.

They took these documents from us when they took all the other documents and never mentioned them once. So if you or your fiance make good money and have ample support, I don't think there is any need to worry.

I think if you make less money that might make them ask for more information etc.

My Petie is very financially secure and it shows that on his affidavit as well as bank statement. I guess I was just worried I didn't have an actual letter from the bank. I was just talking to him in Wisconsin about it. He's a little worried as well and tells me he will stop at the bank tomorrow and get one and get it in the mail to me ASAP. He's friends with one of the employees so he tells me he can get it by noon. It will make me feel better having it. THANKS SAPPHIRE.....you've been great!

Do you think I should get him to send me anything else, oh and he sent me the letter from his employer showing his position, salary, length of time etc.

I also realize he has his W2's for the last 3 years. For anyone who has already interviewed did you get asked for a letter from the bank? I have his statement from the bank showing everything, but I am wondering if you acutally need a letter from an officer of the bank?

Anyone know if HOTWIRE is in US dollars? also, can you search specific hotels????

Yes, it is in US dollars, it says it on the left hand side when you hit continue on your choice of hotel. I hit the continue just to see the total for the entire stay plus taxes, then right below it is says US Dollars. It will tell also tell you the brand of hotels that fall under the price. I went on Hotel.ca just to read reviews on different hotels in the area. You don't get to know what the hotel name is till after you book it on Hotwire, but I find you can figure out which ones it could be.

Then for two days I couldn't get on the website to do it. Then on the third day, it let me on, and it let me try again with a different picture and it still didn't meet requirements but this time it allowed me to continued. I assumed they were down for maintenance making changes to the online form.
I was a little nervious sending it without the picture but the confirmation printed off with directions to bring to the consulate with a picture attached. I then emailed the consulate and they said everything is good to go.

So I guess everyone who sent their packet 3 a few weeks ago is going to be nerveous at each beginning of the month. That is good to know though so if we're not scheduled the first week of April then we have another month to kill and wait for May

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but May is unrealistic. I would aim for June for you, perhaps MAYBE even July.

It makes it easier to wait if you set yourself up for realistic expectations. I sent my packet 3 in January 20th and am still waiting for an interview. I am HOPING for April (VERY slim chance) but think May is a better bet. One of the Montreal operators even told me maybe JUNE. I think he had no clue though.

Thank you everyone for the reply. I read on the photo instruction page that pictures need to be Canadian size. I don't know why it says that. I would think it should be US standard size.

Did you notice on one of the sheets from the consulate "Information on Photographs for Immigrant and K Visa Applicants" it gives photo requirements 2" by2" and then the measurements of the head and then at the bottom it says NOTE: This photograph standard is the same as that of a Canadian Passport Photograph.

That statement is incorrect, a canadian passport photo according to the website says they have to be 2" by 2 and 3/4". Makes you wonder how sticky they would be if you actually did have Canadian Passport Photos done.

Hi, I haven't done my medical yet, I plan on staying in Montreal a few days before my interview to get the medical done at that time. The DS-160 took me about an hour to fill out online. It only allows you so much time and then it times out. I didn't get to the point that it did that. It allows you ample time to fill it out. As far as the picture goes, you can continue without one, when the form first came out you couldn't. Now it does let you continue without one. At the end you print off a confirmation sheet and it tell you to bring it to the interview along with a picture. So I just plan on having an extra one taken to attach to the confirmation letter. It says this on the screen after you send it. I have confirmed this with the consulate and was told the same thing. Good luck.

I wasn't allowed to continue without a picture. So i saved it, scanned a ID picture and uploaded it the next day.
I knew we should be able to continue without the picture but it gave me an error message and the button NEXT was not an option if no picture was uploaded

She doesn't have a interview appointment letter yet? and she said it takes about 2 hours to fill out form DS-160 online. Anybody has encountered that long of time while filling it out and she hasn't submitted it yet. and She said she needs to get digital picture to upload it. I understand these pictures need to be Canadian Passport standard. Is that right?

It only allows you so much time and then it times out. I didn't get to the point that it did that. It allows you ample time to fill it out. As far as the picture goes, you can continue without one, when the form first came out you couldn't. Now it does let you continue without one. At the end you print off a confirmation sheet and it tell you to bring it to the interview along with a picture. So I just plan on having an extra one taken to attach to the confirmation letter. It says this on the screen after you send it. I have confirmed this with the consulate and was told the same thing. Good luck.

Well i couldn't do it guys..I couldn't hold out to Friday to call on check on the interview. I got "Sarah", who I have talked to before. She is very nice. There wasn't one schedule so I asked her, (I told her I didn't want to keep calling and bothering them blush.gif) do they book throughout the month and she said no, usually in the first week of each month is when they schedule the next batch. Then they don't do anymore usually till the next month. So she said for me to wait till after the first week of April and hopefully my date will be scheduled then. YEAH! I feel better now, so I can wait. I can concentrate on selling my properties and getting other things done. Oh, and quick qestion, has anyone booked their room through hotwire (excellent rates) and stayed longer at their hotel then they originally booked at the same rate? Thanks

Well thats not that bad of an upper limit to the estimate then, ty. We need a version of Igor's list for people waiting interviews lol. Crossing my toes for an August move.

I SOOOOOO agree! I'd LOVE to have some sort of list to follow and track to find out when our turn will come. Captain Ewok...???

Actually there is someone on here that has a link to such a spreadsheet...if I remember correctly it tracked Canadians from the NOA1 right to the interview. I can't for the life of me remember who that was........anyone also remember it?

This one?

I'm actually not sure, I thought it tracked it from the NOA1 stage, but this could be it cause I do remember it being all colorful! LOL THANKS...appreciate it.

I'm hoping with the selling of my properties, and finished off things that I have to get done before I leave list the time will go by quickly. I've given up on a April date, so May is ok if it has to be! Give me more time to spend with family & friends. And, more time to save $$ for the week long stay in Montreal....I am doing my medical 3-4 days ahead of interview hopefully. I don't want to make 2-14 hr one way drives. Better get ready for work...have a great day guys!

Not to bring anyone down... just trying to be realistic... almost everyone who has had an interview in the last 6 months or so had to wait at the very minimum 3 months, most people 4 months to get their interview from the date they sent back their Packet 3.

Going for my interview I noticed that there are A LOT of people waiting for these interviews and the sheer amount of time it takes to go through everyone's file and give them all the paperwork is a lot for the amount of staff they appear to have (not that many).

Chances are they will be scheduling the May interviews for people who sent back their Packet 3 in January and possible some February people in the first or second week of April as you'll see there is a pattern with their scheduling.

It will happen soon!! Just give it a couple of months!

When you see other people who sent their packet 3's at the same time who have HAD their interviews or at least scheduled it gets a little depressing. Even more when you call them and they tell you everything is in order, your just waiting a interview date..... I know, there is no rhymn or reason to how they schedule. According to their guidelines you are suppose to be completed from the NVC to Interview within four months. They definately need more staff. Congrats on your visa! You must be so excited!! Take care.

Of course, and I totally know what it's like to wait 4 months, I did! - and I know when are on a cusp like you are being in January, it does suck. I sent back my Packet 3 in November, but had people who sent theirs back in December scheduled before me, so it sucked, but I prepared myself to wait 4 months and it really didn't feel that long afterall but it helped that I didn't call them at all until I knew it was almost time to be scheduled. And, when I called it was scheduled, so there was no heart break!

Calling every single day in the same month you send back the packet really just makes it harder if you ask me. (This is not in reference to you as I think you are going to be scheduled any day now!)

I know, I try not to call, but then I look at my sweetie's picture on the fridge...and then I melt and pick up the phone!! How pathetic is that. I was just going through some old emails and I found one from the Montreal Consulate from February 20th that said you will be sent a letter within 4 weeks to notify you of your interview date. Regards Op 5 . They have passed that mark. I am going to try hard not to call till Friday. Wish me luck! LOL
Have a good day.
