Middle East and North AfricaLets talk about shampoooooooooo...
I have very thick hair which I bleach and highlight. Luckily my hair stands up to a barrage of mistreatment and is in good condition, but I could not live without my GHD hair flat irons They are $130 on Folica.com but you ladies with curly hair will think its the best money you have ever spent. Poker straight hair in 2 mins. No other straightener comes close. Also I use Treseme shampoo and conditioner. I love the conditioner it really makes my hair shine.

Middle East and North Africamenu ideas for reception
what about some homemade falafel? Its very filling so you don't need too much. Lots of different breads and dips are always well received, and maybe some kibbeh or simple chicken kebobs. Ooh and some yummy tahini. Im an event planner and did a lot of events in Cairo and Dubai so I could go on forever !!!

that woman sounds like a complete pain in the a$$. My approach to this would be never acknowledge her existence again. So many decent people to speak to in this world so just completely ignore her if you can.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresThrew out my old airline tickets, am I in trouble?
I never kept boarding passes or ticket stubs/email tickets either. I panicked a bit when I realized that I might have been stupid throwing them away, but I contacted the airline who sent me a letter confirming all the flights I had taken to the US (because I travelled a lot with work, there were about 20 flights in total to the US over a 3 year period but the airline still took the time to detail every one). Maybe you could try this? Also, as someone else has said, your passport is stamped at entry so you can prove where you have been and when.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHelp! Processing time
As its the beginning of February you really need to think about filing your application if you want to get married in June. I filed late July 2006 for K-1 and I received my K-1 visa at the beginning of November (just over 3 months in total). Some people wait quite a bit longer than that so by all means keep June as your wedding date but don't be surprised if you have to move the date ! Best of luck.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAnother Uptight Question

Question for y'all:

How did you organize your papers? I punched two holes in the top and planned on attaching them with one of those metal fasteners, but it turns out the holes are too far apart. Any alternate suggestions?

And I was going to affix sticky tabs to the bottom with the different types of info so they could be flipped to easily...but then I was thinking that they might not like having a sticky tab on things like the I129F form. Any ideas?

Or does this sound okay?

After wrestling with the fasteners and realizing that the holes were too far apart, I started writing the check. Hadn't noticed that I had given myself a papercut and proceeded to bleed all over the check. Unbelievable.

my lawyer put together my papers and they were in a simple buff coloured folder with the holes at the top and a sliding metal bar fastener. He also added those coloured tab insert sheets (the ones with the little coloured tabs sticking out with the subject matter printed on the tabs). I guess this was the alternative to sticky tabs. I think generally they dont consider the presentation too much but if its easy for the officer to read and flip easily to the different sections, it cant be a bad thing! Bad luck with the paper cut though - probably best to write a new check!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresCan my fiance enter the US if his fiance visa is being processed?
I visited my fiance in the US whilst my K-1 was being processed (Im from the UK). My POE was Washington DC and to be honest, I had no idea that there would be any concerns with me visiting him whilst I was being processed. Needless to say I arrived with no documentation detailing ties to the UK and when the immigration officer asked my reason for visiting, I simply told him I was visiting my fiance. I went on to tell him I was currently being processed for a K1 and hoping to get my interview soon. He wished me a nice holiday and wished me well for my future wedding. Moral of Story: Do not ever ever lie to immigration or try and hold anything back. If you are honest and upfront about your situation then any reasonable officer should be fine.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAny problems with attorneys?
I did use an attorney for my K-1 visa and for my AOS and I can honestly say that it was an excellent decision. I consider myself an intelligent person and would have certainly been able to do the paperwork myself, but both myself and my fiance felt that a legal entity who had done this countless times before may know the "ins and outs" of the process. My attorney was an immigration attorney and absolutely knew everything about the process, where problems lie, actual response times (rather than USCIS website times), and a whole array of useful information.

Yes my case was pretty straightforward, however, I filed for K-1 end of July 2006 and received my K-1 from the London Embassy on October 3rd. My AOS was filed on 31 December 2006 and I received my green card on 16 February 2007. With those timescales, I feel my attorney was worth his $2,500 fee (that was for both services).

My greencard arrived with my incorrect birth month, and whilst this isnt a problem as I can still work and travel, it has to be returned for re-issue. I have been told by others that it takes 6 months. I am using my attorney again just to file the one form but I am very confident I wont wait 6 months for the new card, and its the peace of mind that counts for me.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresCSC Processing

Thanks for all your responses and ideas.....

Does anyone know WHY my case was sent to California when my fiance lives in Tennessee? Is there a system to the referrals or is it quotas? It seems a little odd that it wasn't sent to Texas for processing.

Cheers guys, it's good to hear about your experiences.

x

there is no rhyme or reason in my opinion with where your case is handled. CSC is in my humble opinion one of the faster service centers and its generally considered a good thing if your case is passed to them to process. I really wouldnt pay any heed to the processing times on the USCIS website. My K1 visa was processed in 3 months, and I received my green card (AOS filing) within 8 weeks of filing. I know that my timescales are very good indeed and many others here have much longer waiting times, but I was processed at CSC so they are clearly faster than their website timescales indicate. Good luck.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresQuestion about evidence of in person meeting
the circumstances seem very reasonable. She entered on a K1 but didnt go through with the marriage and abided by the terms and conditions by leaving the US within the appropriate timeframe. As you met during the 3 month period she was here and fell in love, you have evidence you have met and spent time together. As far as I know (and someone will correct me if Im wrong), having held a previous K-1 is not held against her. I would call one of those visa law attorneys that give you 10 mins chat for free and see what they say. Sounds fine to me! Good luck

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresIs it in my best interest?
This does sound monetary in its entirety, and if your fiance is an earner then naturally her family are terrified that without her working, they will suffer. Maybe you could offer a dowry when you visit? and like others have said, promise to send a regular monthly amount to the family. Your fiance is probably torn between being with you and ensuring her family are ok. Personally if I thought something would adversely affect my family then I would be torn too no matter how much I loved my fiance. I know its sounds harsh but money could resolve this issue.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresIs a K1 the best option?

Many congratulations to you both !! I think the K1 would be your best bet here. I really think you should speak to a competent immigration lawyer to get a professional perspectivce on this. I filed my K1 and AOS through a very good lawyer in NYC, and I received my K1 within 4 months of filing. I also visited my now husband twice during the time the K1 was processing(I am a UK citizen), and based on where the USC lives in the US, Dulles Airport (WAshington DC) are quite lenient with that sort of thing (my experience anyhow). Good luck to you both and if you need the name of the lawyer I used just let me know.

Thanks Britty, that may well be useful. Having read many forums and guides on the internet, (especially the one's on this site) I was quite happy that we could sort this ourselves, but I know Laura has expressed a desire to have a lawyer involved if the costs aren't too high, to ensure we fill everything out correctly and supply enough correct and relevant information. Does the firm you used have a website I could look at?

We used Michael Solomon at The Law Offices of Michael Solomon (make sure you speak to him directly). The website is http://www.k1-fiance...1-fiancee-visa/
You get a free initial phone consultation and all the forms etc are done online. Cost is $1500 and you can pay in 3 monthly installments. We had to chase Michael for info on a couple of occasions but he was clearly working on our case as the K1 came through 14 weeks after first filing. He also did our AOS and we got the green card 8 weeks after filing.

Please understand something here...using a lawyer does not make this process faster than others who don't use lawyers. It would seem that your case went fast compared to some. That isn't always the case, even when using a lawyer. Each case is processed individually and where one goes through rather quickly, others may not. Example: my husband is from Canada. Our K1 took 4 months, AOS took 9 months. Another couple from VJ whose spouse was from Canada was AOS approved in 31 days. Neither of us used a lawyer.

I was not suggesting that using a lawyer makes the process faster. I just wanted to share my experience with using a lawyer. I do believe that all cases should seek competent legal advice before embarking on their journey, and many lawyers offer free consultations. With the OP's current situation, and new babies to consider, I think legal advice is paramount.

the one way ticket is all you need. The plan is to come to the USA on the K-1, marry within 90 days, then file for AOS. If you dont marry within 90 days then the non USC has to return to their home country and you have to purchase a one way ticket back !!

Cool then good.gif You are one of the lucky ones. I've seen so many people get messed around by "immigration" lawyers who have no idea as to what they are doing.

My lawyer was very good. He kept in constant contact with us, regularly updating on our case. He was very efficient with all the paperwork and very reassuring. I know we were very lucky as there have been some horror stories about some supposed immigration lawyers. We might attempt the removal of conditions ourselves though !

We did use an attorney. We are both very organised people and although quite capable of doing the paperwork ourselves, we both felt we wanted a dedicated immigration lawyer to oversee our paperwork. We also used the same attorney for AOS. Our case was very straightforward and our timeline was very short indeed both for K-1 and AOS. Whilst I think the timeline was just good fortune and pure luck on our part, I have no regrets using an attorney.

If you had a straight forward case like you say, a good attorney would have told you you could do it yourselves instead of wasting that money on something you could have done together.

I just can't fathom spending up to 2,000 dollars for something you can do yourself for free. Oh well.

To the OP: My opinion is to save your money, but reading RebeccaJo's post...it seems you may have a battle on your hands with the consulate. If you believe a lawyer will increase your chances, go for it.

I would say the majority of people on here did not use a lawyer and were just fine.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhy does it is take so long to get a K1 visa
You must also remember that timelines vary greatly for processing. I received my K1 within 3 months of filing, but others have waited far longer. Cases certainly aren't processed in the order they were received at USCIS, however, this may be linked to requests for further info and any investigations that USCIS may wish to undertake. Just make sure that your paperwork is complete and error free, and have someone check it over for you if necessary. I used an attorney to file my case but as long as you are diligent you will be fine. Good luck.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedureshow to best use the 90 days prior to marriage k-1
My husband and I filed for a K-1 after 4 years of dating. He asked me to marry him, and being madly in love with him, I said yes. Regardless of government requirements and policy, you should file for a K-1 when you decide you want to spend the rest of your life with your SO. If you have ANY doubts, then you are simply not ready for marriage yet and should wait until you are, IMO. If you think the 90 day grace period could be used as a vehicle to really test your relationship then again, why would you even contemplate marriage in the first place? My husband and I had a few fights during the 90 day grace, and there were days when I could have killed him (and him me), but NEVER did we have any doubts about marrying. We all go through such an emotional rollercoaster on our K-1 journeys. I can't believe any two people would put themselves through that if they weren't 100% confident in their decision to be together.

QUOTE (Drew and Tik @ Oct 25 2007, 01:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think moxcamel made one of the best analogies I've heard in a long time and it was lost on most of the people reading this thread.

This visa is basically one of the ONLY rational ways to be with your fiancee. Therefore, if the government told me to say my favorite color was pink, I too would lie and say that I loved pink if that's what it took to be with Tik!

(PS, that had nothing to do with the OP).

If you're outraged because someone would lure an innocent person to this country and then decide they don't want them anymore, you have every right to be completely irritated and pissed off...but if you're mad that they are not being 100% honest to god truthful on their visa application about what intent to marry means to them, I don't know, that's a little nit picky.

So same end result, but you should be mad about the principal and immorality of using someone you supposedly love, not about lying to the government. I mean, they never lie to us, right?

Just want to note that I didn't lie, I have every intention of marrying Tik. I seriously don't think anyone with my sad income would shell out this kind of money to bring her here if they didn't.

but the point is you WANT to get married to your SO so you don't need to tell the government anything but the truth.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsHow many times have you visited your fiance?

It's Amy again, the American fiancee. :)

I don't think anyone is saying that they feel that truly getting to know someone is a bad thing, but you assume that people can't know each other without meeting in person multiple times over many years. What you say is required to truly get to know someone isn't necessarily required for everyone. I think that's why people found your post a little insulting.

In my initial response to Victor's response I was trying to illustrate that time and amount of visits can't possibly be the same for everyone because of different life circumstances, so it's not fair for you to say that a relationship isn't stable or valid based on the amount of courtship or face-time spent before submitting the I-129F. I feel it's somewhat condescending to assume that everyone who hasn't had the resources to travel as much as you could to see your significant other is flakey and flighty about this decision.

I agree, with Ben and I, we had spent so much time talking about many things, and he had helped me through personal family problems that I had had, that as soon as I saw him waiting for me at the bottom of the escalator in Australia I knew in my heart that this was the man I'd marry. My brain, which had been emotionally hurt by my ex boyfriend of 6 years, was warning me to be careful though, so we took it slow and arranged to live together for a year before we rushed into marriage even though it was on both our minds and we had talked about the possibility. Now that we've been living together for this past year, our brains finally caught up to our hearts and realised that they were right.

I used to think that if you didn't live with each other for a while before marriage then you were rushing into it and setting yourself up for failure, but I have seen so many couples who don't fit into that mold and are perfectly happy and united. So I know now that everyone has their own path, their own timeline, their own speed and their own way that works for them. And no one should ever try to impose their rules on someone elses relationship. Some things that other people do don't work for me and Ben at all but they work for others, and vice versa. The only sort of judgement anyone should have to worry about is what the government says, because thats the only sort of judgement that matters :)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress Reportshow did you meet your loved one
I love this thread, its so cute how little miracles happen and we find our Ones from far away :)

The story of how I met Ben is a long one. In 2002 after I graduated High School one of my good friends was on a creative writing forum and I had drawn pics for the characters in an RPG she was in, so I decided to join so I could join the story too. Ben had (unknowing to me at the time obvs) joined the site in the same month and year as me (Sept 2002). I knew of him since 2002 since we both were in some of the same rpgs, but he was just some random person, not really one of my friends at the time (which happened to be a good thing since at the time I was 18 and he was 14 XD if I had gotten to know him well then it would have been awkwardddddd). Time went on, I got a boyfriend, he became a sort of friend of mine in 2006, although he was slightly annoying since sometimes he would get overly enthusiastic and always wanted to chat me up. He mildly flirted with me which I was with someone at the time and I don't cheat so that contributed to it XD

More time went on, I broke up with my boyfriend in 2008 because he was a huge loser and I was stubbornly trying to make something work that never would, we were totally incompatible but it was my first love so I didn't know how to let go. Afterwards I was going through a rough time with everything in my life changing and nothing was safe or stable. Ben stuck with me (which I still at first thought was annoying XD) and would not take a hint until I finally opened up to him and poured out all my troubles. He was calm and steady and supported and encouraged me, not just with his words but with his actions and how he was living his life. I came to realise he wasn't just that annoying slightly flirty guy I thought at first, he was very wise and deeply caring, but it took awhile for me to realise.

We'd have deep conversations, we collaborated on writing and art projects, we'd play chess on facebook and voice chatted karaoke on msn. So in August 2009 when I had paid off my debt accrued due to my ex, I wanted to take a good vacation. Originally I'd always wanted to go to Hawaii but he convinced me to visit Australia (it didn't take much convincing XD) I was still a bit scared about trusting but I knew I needed to meet him, I loved him more and more every day and I had to see if it would go anywhere in real life. I worked 2 jobs for a total of 14 hours a day just to save up enough for the trip. I met him in Feb 2010 and spent a week with him, he was all I thought he was and more. I knew as soon as I saw him from the top of the escalator that he was the one I would marry, but my brain was all logical and was like "well you need to see if you can live with him first nag nag nag!!". So after that trip we both worked on finding him a visa to come stay with me for an extended period of time, and found that since he was graduating from college in Aug 2010 he was eligible for the J1 exchange visa. He saved up and in Sept 2010 arrived here in the US to begin our year of living together.

It quickly became apparent that my heart was right all along and my brain got the hint as well and we were engaged in Sept 2011 just before he went back to Australia. Now we are in the K1 process, keeping sane through various writing projects, our music video save the date project, msn, emails and skype :3 And this year in Sept (if all goes well) we will be married 10 years to the month of us both joining that forum that started it all :luv:

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsAny August filers?

Hey guys, I registered on the uscis website so I can check my case status. I got my NOA1 on the 11th, the last updated was Aug. 12, not sure if I can consider it a touch or not, it was most likely just to process the payment, or forward it to CSC. Either way, pretty cool that we can check that on there!

So, I was thinking we should get to know each other! We'll all be around here for a while! How did everyone meet their fiances? Seems like a good way to get some discussion rolling. :)

I met mine on a forum we both have been posting at since 2002, but I didn't really get to know him until 2006, and even then, not very well until 2009! We also were both on an art site (deviantart.com) and were friends on there for awhile. In 2009 we really started to get to know each other well and gave each other support in our lives. I met him in Feb 2010 and he came to live with me on a J1 visa in Sept 2010 :) It always amazes me how to world works, people get put into your life in weird ways and things just work out <3

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsIs a male engagement ring likely to be an issue?
Before we got engaged we both wore promise rings on our right ring fingers and he was able to get not only a J1 visa but a K1 visa the following year :) Australia is different than UK I know but I'm sure it will be fine, just explain it to them at the interview if they ask! :)
