United KingdomWhy USA and not UK?
Although I am closer to my family in the UK, we made the decision to live in the US mainly due to my husband's work. I was also so tired of watching the UK go "to the dogs" with all the immigration problems, taxes, and left wing spineless government that would have me support all the freeloaders and leeches. Also, the crime rate in London is getting worse and criminals do what they want knowing they will get a smack on the back of the hand for their crime. I go back twice a year to visit family and friends, and family come out twice a year to visit (they love it and we intend to have them relocate here in time). The money issue was also tempting. My cash doubled overnight so that was a bonus. My job here pays 30% more than the same job in the UK which surprised me as I thought my salary may suffer here. My standard of living is higher, I eat out 4 times a week, I am able to drive around without worrying that the gas bill is going to cripple me, I can defend myself and my home in the event of attack, I have fantastic healthcare where a doctor can see me the same day, my employer gives me 6 weeks paid vacation, the weather is lovely, and of course I have hubby.

For all those interested, Harris Teeter has just started stocking Galaxy chocolate bars !! kicking.gif kicking.gif Quite pricey at around $4 (small bar too), but oh its worth it. Harris Teeter are really jumping on the UK imported food bandwagon. Every time I visit they seem to be running a new line so pretty soon the Brits will have a full aisle !!

United KingdomHow did everyone meet?
We met in 2001 when he joined the company I worked for. I was based in London and him in the DC office. He was sales and I was marketing so we worked closely together. Emails turned from professional to friendly, and we both travelled extensively, so we would always see eachother at events around the world. One night we got really drunk with a bunch of others from work but we ended up the last two at the bar. That night was the beginning of our relationship, and we did the transatlantic thing for years until he proposed in early 2006. Thank god because I had just about run out of Virgin airmiles at that point. smile.gif

United KingdomWedding Registries - did anyone use them for gifts for the wedding?
I have no problem at all with registeries for other people's weddings. Its very easy now to buy online so you dont even need to leave the house to purchase a gift. The store always keeps the gifts for the couple so there is also no need to wrap your gift or carry it to the wedding. I find requests for money a little distasteful. I have known a few couples who have requested money as a present and I got the impression from all of them that they wanted to cover the cost of their wedding. They could have married quietly for next to no cost, but instead had a big "do" and wanted to burden all their guests with the cost. Tacky.

Anyway, we didnt ask for any form of gift and only asked for people's presence (not presents). Most of my guests made a charitable donation to the cats home I volunteer for and that was lovely.

United KingdomTraditional English Sunday Roast
My yorkies always come out really well. Here is the recipe I use and it does work. Just sift the all purpose flour and make a well in the centre. Mix the eggs and milk together, add some salt and pepper and slowly whisk into the batter mixture. Leave the batter sitting at room temperature for one hour before you cook it.

Use a deep muffin pan and add a tablespoon of regular cooking oil. Heat the oven to 475F and then heat the pan for about 5-6 minutes. Have the batter ready when you take the pan out of the oven. Immediately ladle enough batter into each muffin hole to reach around half way up, and put straight back into the oven.

You won't see any action for about 15 minutes, and it will look like the yorkies are burning on top, but the top bits will fall off as the yorkies grow and then after 25 minutes you will have huge perfect yorkshire puddings !! Good luck.

vegetable oil
100ml full-fat milk
50ml sparkling water
115g all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 medium eggs, beaten

=D Yeppers. I do know that Alaska Airways and Lufthansa (in addition to Continental and a couple of other companies) allow up to one or two pets in the cabin. I'll be booking a month or so in advance so I can be utterly sure of having a place secured for him. I also do have an approved in-cabin carrier (Sherpa, as recommended by VJers!) which Bean does fit into. I had to roll a ball into it so he'd crawl after it so I would have an idea of how well he fit =D.

I did have a look at the pinned topic, but I have had previous experience where it takes a little time for people to respond on there. Hence, posting here =D.

Thank you guys for all your responses!

Magpie.

To be honest, in cabin is the only way to go, imo. The cat is with you at all times, the cabin is much quieter and you can keep an eye on your precious cargo! biggrin.gif

Sherpas are a great little bag. I still have my two and use them for vet visits! Well worth the cost and very sturdy.

One thing I will mention is that even though the carriers are supposed to fit under the seat in front of you, they actually don't. You kind of have to squeeze them a little. I ended up with my feet on the seat, curled up. It wasn't comfortable for me, but my 2 cats were fine. laughing.gif

I was clearly duped by BA and a greedy vet. Both informed me I had to have all the shots and checks etc before the cats could get their passports, and AirPets made me pay for the containers the cats flew in and for the cats to stay at the heathrow pet hotel before their flight. I wasn't even on the same flight as them ! Still. now they have their passports they can travel in and out of the USA if needed in the future.

United KingdomBooking Flights With Pets
QUOTE (KnightAndMagpie @ Feb 21 2009, 05:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Heya guys,

To those who've travelled with pets over a long distance (in my case, from the UK to Anchorage, Alaska), how did you go about booking? You can imagine what a new experience this is to me...I'm not sure whether I should approach a specific airline or just turn up at the airport and poke around. I'm going to have my kitty in the cabin and I know that the flights + pet fares can be expensive. I want to plan how much money I should be saving right now so I'm not panicking about it later on.

This is the little troublemaker in question.

Advice would be great!

Magpie.

Magie, there are a number of factors to be taken into consideration before you can fly your pet to the US from the UK. Firstly, no pets can fly in the
main cabin - they must travel in the hold. They must also have a flight approved carrier to transport them. A vet must approve your pet for travel and it will need shots before it leaves the UK. The vet will provide you with a signed certificate of health, however, there is a wait required between the rabies shot and the actual travel. You need to contact your local vet in the first instance, then contact a company who deal in transporting animals (I will post the company I used later today). Your cat will not be allowed to fly unless all the above is complete. Its not cheap - the total for my 2 cats including vet and shots was $3,200 total. Expect all this to cost around $1600.

United KingdomTo the Brits - do you think everything here in the US is too sweet?
i find the bread here revolting - its so sweet that it really qualifies as cake. There is a store called Bloom that sells a "baked on the premises" plain white unsliced loaf and that is the only bread I can eat. It actually tastes like bread from a UK baker but it means I have to drive 10 miles to get it! I think the chocolate is really too sweet and hurts my teeth so I buy UK chocolate. Everything else tastes more or less the same though.

United KingdomTo the Brits - do you think everything here in the US is too sweet?
they should just call the bread here "cake" and be done with it. I think desserts are no more sweeter than in the UK but certainly other foods are. I cant eat the bread here at all unless Im having toast with marmalade. I really miss the big blue warburtons loaf. Luckily my family bring over tons of it when they come over.

In VA you now need a SS number in order to take the driving test. I was amazed at the two part test (especially since a girl I sat next to in the waiting room informed me that as I hadn't studied for the multiple choice questions part of the test, there is no way I would pass. I was terrified thinking it would be really hard. OK so the first question is : "spell your name correctly". Seriously - and when I got that one right, I got a point !!! yeah !!

The remainder of the questions were a little harder - like this gem: What should you do at a red light? (a) stop (B) increase your speed © honk your horn and shout loudly (d) indicate to turn left .......... I am very surprised I passed......

The actual driving test was a drive around the large car park with a left turn to turn into the parking space (took 3 mins in total).

Yeah I just used an adaptor. To be honest I could have got more heat from the hair irons by blowing on them. I had some pink (yes pink!) kitchen appliances which were really nice, but I left them at my mum's after finding out that the irons and hairdryer didn't do much. To be honest, your kitchen appliances will be a lot to carry or expensive to ship, so I would kiss them goodbye and find them a new home. If you have time before you are due to leave, put them on ebay and at least get some money back for them. You can buy really nice small appliances out here, and I recently found a pink food mixer so I am very happy indeed !

When I came from the UK, I took my hair irons and hair dryer with me. They were expensive in the UK so I didn't want to just leave them behind. Because of the voltage difference, they both lacked power over here, and the irons especially were practically useless. I'm not sure about small electrical kitchen goods, but I'm guessing you might have the same problem. They may not do what they are supposed to do due to the lack of appropriate power.

Okay, so we've had the threads talking about all of the wonderful things regarding the UK and the things we really miss etc etc. How about things you DON'T miss or can't wait to see the back of?

Me? The London Underground and the buses in the Summer months. 100f+ temps, no air at all, clothes all stuck to your legs....ick. Don't miss it AT ALL. The buses were even worse, little greenhouses on wheels, they really were!

So, what about you? :D

I whole heartedly agree with not missing Ken Livingstone !!! What a complete to$$er that man is.

I too do not miss the tube at all (summer or winter), especially the extremes of temperature, and the over packed carriages. I certainly do not miss office life and trying to grab a sandwich on Oxford Street in London without being trampled by the masses. A few other things I am glad to see the back of are: annoying teens with hoodies and fake Louis Vuitton bags, anything to do with the useless labour government, and house prices.

United KingdomIrritating BS your SO does

Two things to this thread, I KNOW it is a lighthearted thread, so please don't get angry with me for being a little more serious with this question:

1) My ex-husband was such a complete and total jerk to me for so many years, I don't think much of anything Rob could do would ever compare.

2) Rob and I have a mutual friend named Scott. We've known Scott for over 4 years. Scott and I talk on a pretty regular basis, as he is a wonderful person and a great friend. He's been married the entire time I've known him, and has two precious children with his wife. Aside from the fact that they are both completely wonderful people, the thing I adore most about Scott is this:

In four + years, not once, not ever have I heard him say a single bad thing about his wife. Not once. He never has anything but positive things to say about her. He found his dream woman, and they are living a dream together.

I've spent time watching the relationships of others around me, and I have to tell you, Scott has one of the best I have ever seen and I generally think it is a mutual respect they have for each other. They don't pick at each other, degrade each other, or try and "fix" each other. I HATE watching it when people are mean to each other.

Sometimes the little things are the things that end up breaking up marriages. Don't waste precious moments together in your lives arguing over silly things or trying to change one another.

I am going to add the Optomists Creed in here, and underline a line of it I have had to chant over and over to myself on occassion.

I promise myself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person I meet.
To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature I meet.
To give so much time to improving myself that I have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on my side, so long as I am true to the best that is in me.

- Christian D. Larson

I have to agree with the spirit of the above post. I'm not really sure of what good can come from a complaint topic about your fiancee/spouse topic other than to stir the pot of discontent which may some day lead to the disolution of the relationship. Or is that misery loves company? If people are that miserable with their significant other, they may need to re-evaluate the relationship altogether.

My fiancee is from way up north in the UK and when she was visiting northern Virginia (Washington DC metro area) we found a place here called the British Pantry. They can get food items including the HP brown sauce - so it's nice to know we can have access to important things like that. I imagine it's a little more different for those UK folks immigrating out into the sticks or a "back water" part of the US where the cultural and geographical differences are more stark.

In the case of both me and my fiancee, weather is an important factor. Extreem cold affects us both negatively but in different ways. I grew up in northern California where the weather is hot and dry and winters are very mild. However, I lived for the past 15-20 years in upstate New York (Rochester and most recently Syracuse) and the winters are long, bitter and snowy there. Due to some changes in my life I have moved to northern Virginia and the winters are a bit milder here, very little snow typically.

As for food, its an adventure. I love many different kinds and I've sound so far that what she makes is similar enough to what we eat here. In the DC area there is a huge ethnic diversity so you can get just about anything.

United KingdomUK electrical appliances in the US
Most US houses (not apartments) that I have seen usually have in certain parts of the house wiring for 220 plugs. These are not something people generally plug things into other than what they are set up for, which are the Stove/Range in the kitchen, and sometimes cloths dryers have a plug set up for 220 where ever the laundry is set up. These options generally do not help for things like stereo's or hair appliances because of location but in some cases it might be worth looking at running a heavy duty extension cable say, to a stereo or something. More often that not it wouldn't be practical. There may be rare cases where it might be worth having an electrician run a 220 outlet in a US house if certain items are "must have's".

Another factor besides the plug sockets and voltage differnces is the alternating current frequency, which may matter for some electrical things. In the US the house power uses 60hz or 60 cycles per second alternating current, whereas in Europe it's 50 hz or cycles per second. My guess is the UK is the same as Germany for type of power (ie 50 hz). Of course German wall plugs are a different shape than the UK or US from what I've seen.

Be aware that some appliances, especially bathroom appliances like hair dryers, curlers, electric shavers etc, are often sold with the ability to change power settings for travelers. I had an electric shaver which I could flip a switch on it depending on 110 volts in the US or 220 in Germany or other countries. I simply added a plug adaptor so it would fit the wall socket and I was good to go as long as I selected the correct voltage for the country. Hair dryers often have a switch like this but you have to check when you buy them. This feature often doesn't make the hair dryer any more expensive either.

I work on computers in the US and I've noticed for desktop computers, nearly all of them have a switch on the back power supply that can be changed to 220 volts from US 110. Thus, all you need in that case is to remove the power cable that fits US sockets and replace it with one that fits UK sockets and flip the switch. For laptops, you can probably buy a different power plug that goes into it that is made for whatever voltage it will be operated. Monitors have a built in power supply so those would be a different story - and need to have a converter or be switchable.

Of course in many cases it may not be cost effective to ship over larger electrical items from the UK to the US, and many can be replaced at low cost here in the US.

Ok sounds like its good I started asking questions. The devil is in the details once again! One thing that caught my eye was the chicken pox vericella vaccine. Nich says they don't even offer it in the UK so by that meaning someone in the UK can't get 100% of the vaccines required for the AOS? The simple reading of that says to me that most UK folks still has to get at least one vaccine in the US after coming over and getting married. I hope I'm wrong about that because it would be nice to have 100% of vaccines done before traveling. If not, its not a huge problem but again, I'm hoping we can do all possible and have the vaccines and documentation all complete for the AOS.
CoffeeMuseMaleUnited Kingdom2010-11-12 12:46:00
United KingdomAdvance Parole
If the listing posted above for the vaccinations is what the AOS process requires, then we should be able to double check those vaccinations against it to make sure they are all done. I remember early on seeing feedback here in VJ that you could be granted the K1 even if you didn't have all of the vaccinations required, but you could get them later once you were in the US - I assume in time for the AOS. But of course we'd prefer to have it all taken care of before she comes here just so its done and we don't have more things to worry about along with getting married, settled and filing for the AOS etc.

Coffeemuse, it does seem quite hard to get things right. I was just looking at your dates - it seems you waited a really long time (July to November?) between the interview date and the K1 being delivered. Did it take that long to get all the medical stuff together?

Yes it took that long, And it could have potentially taken alot longer if the checkups asked for didn't come up all clear, fine and dandy.

I have been getting aquainted with the vagaries of the NHS over the past several years and from everything I've heard, it ain't pretty at all. I'll just leave it at that because it is outside the scope of this topic and forums.

This discussion regarding immunizations for Knightsbridge K1 vs AOS is enlightening and a bit confusing. My fiancee, as far as I know, went ahead and got all her vaccinations taken care of for the K1 medical at Knightsbridge. Obviously she wanted to make sure she had EVERYTHING done although I think after Knightsbridge, she still ended up needing a couple more vaccinations, although on of them may have been the flu jab. In the end, to satisfy the Knightsbridge doctor, she sent in correct documents and that finished things up which were pending and the K1 was finally sent about a week ago.

So if what I read here is correct, you can satisfy the requirements in London for the K1, and yet the AOS may require further vaccinations? I would like of course, for my fiancee to have all taken care of before she leaves since her GP can take care of here over there rather than have to find a doctor here etc.

I believe as long as everything passes (Medical + Interview) then you can be handed your K1 and walk out the door. There have been people here on the forums who had to fulfill one or more requirements before the K1 would be provided. Examples of such things might have included documentation involving a divorce, additional medical stuff, whatever. Because you can't be 100% sure until you have the K1 in your hand, you can't make hard and fast dates for things like travel, weddings etc. It all depends on having the K1 approved and in your hand (and your big brown envelope). In my case, the doctor required my fiancee take care of a list of things for the medical side and until that was all turned in and satisfied, we had to wait on the K1. It delayed us by exactly 3 months getting the K1. Hopefully you'll be able to take yours with you directly after the interview.

Yep! I wasn't sure to put you in July because of your interview then or the approval now....

I think it was appropriate to wait until we had the K1 officially delivered. Until then we didn't know the outcome and I try not to county my chicks until the eggs are hatched (old saying since my mother grew up on a farm).

Right! The month and day are backwards from America! Well, I think when my dad was in the Air Force they did it day/month/year also, which actually makes sense going from smaller date unit to larger but oh well, America is dafty about some things or as Twinkles would say "crazy Americans".

It was a long wait for sure. I updated my post in the general K1 section also. Muchas Gracias!

Yes, I'm pinching myself too!
