National Visa Center (Dept of State)Tracking NVC packages to embassies
I've noticed that there is conflicting info here on VJ regarding how to track petitions shipped via DHL from NVC to the consulate.

In this post on the General K1 Guides and Info thread (pinned in the K-1 Process and Procedures forum), it suggests using "CORRESPONDENCE" as the shipment reference (and 03801 as the Origin Postal Code) on the DHL Track by Reference page. But on some of the NVC guides, I've read that the reference is "EXP 21 SEP 2009A," where the date is generally one day before NVC says the case left their facility.

In checking the DHL page, it appears that NVC uses both: both references return results from the U.S. Department of State to various embassy and consulate cities worldwide.

Is it possible that the EXP reference is for IR-1/CR-1 packages, while CORRESPONDENCE is used on K-1s? Could it be a matter of different mail clerks using different references? Does anyone have any idea at all what the difference is (if any)? biggrin.gif

National Visa Center (Dept of State)How will I know when NVC recives my petition
QUOTE (ScottThuy @ Sep 26 2009, 01:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
its handled differently for K visas... they dont send K visas emails and they are also not in the automated system...

good.gif Exactly right. Shortly after NVC receives your petition from USCIS, they will send you a form letter containing your new consular case number and stating that the petition will be forwarded to the consulate "within a week." This is generally true unless you get picked for additional processing (AP). The only way you'll know for sure when your petition has left NVC is to keep calling them.

Asia: East and Pacifichigh expectations from attorney?
My attorney was great. His receptionist was a right cow, but he was very professional and everything was done correctly and within a very short time. Half the battle is having to deal with receptionists or administrators who feel that they have every right to treat you like something they stepped in in a dog park. I told my attorney's receptionist that she needed to change her attitude, and finally refused to deal with her. I informed my attorney that she was in fact a hinderance to his clients and was possibly the result of a failed visa application herself, as she always appeared very bitter. Possibly some of these "support" staff are failed attorneys and maybe just can't live with it.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Forgive my silly question

I e-mailed to ask if they had recieved my case and if so what the status was... and they replied!

It does indeed mean that your case is on its way to London for final processing. Basically when I received that same notice, my interview date was 4 weeks later and I was notified by post. I have to say that I was so nervous going to the US embassy in London but including queueing in the morning, my entire wait was 1.5 hours. They asked me two questions, my fiance's name and what state he lived in, and then said "welcome to the US". I was petrified going in and elated coming out!

Oh and by the way make sure you pay for the next day delivery service when your passport with visa is returned to you. The company is called SMS (secure mail services) and they do all the courier deliveries for the US embassy in London. They are based in the embassy and you are asked to see them before you leave. I think the total was £28 for me and the company was great in delivering.

Good luck and Im sure by March you will have your visa !!

How long is the Extraits de Casier Judiciaire valid? I have several months before I receive the NOA2 but would like to prepare all the required documents. Is the police certificate valid for a short amount of time? How long will it take my fiance to receive one? Any help is definitely appreciated. Thanks!

hey
this extrait de casier judiciaire is the easiest thing to get in France. You need to fill in this form online : https://www.cjn.just...r/cjn/b3/eje20c
u will receive the extrait within a week (I got mine in 2 days once). don't know how long it is valid for but since it's so easy to get there is no need to try getting it way in advance. oh and it's free smile.gif vive le service public !! (et les impots qui vont avec tongue.gif).

I've seen various answers on this, so I'm not sure what is accurate. Does he have to pay to have his Dutch birth certificate translated into English, or is it acceptable for him to translate it? If he can translate it...does he just type it up and print it off or what?

I received my employment autorization and my advance parole last week!
I start a part time paid internship on Friday:) I applied late february and they contacted me mid March. They wanted someone starting in April. I told them I was waiting for my work autorization that should come mid April. I got the EAD on time so everything is ok!

Also I got my driving license last Thursday (I had a learner's that past month). We bought a car so now I can move around easily (well as much as the insane DC metro area traffic allows me to)!

Hi Jeff,
Welcome on this thread. it has been the best one for me on VJ so far smile.gif
As I told you by pm they contacted me by phone something like 5 days after I sent them a fax.
I also heard of a US citizen who managed to get them on the phone. I think no answer after 3 fax is a good reason for you to insist on that one.
In any case don't try to call the number that they charge you 15 euros for. I tried when I couldn't figure whether our case was in France or Niger and got a guy on the phone who was a pure idiot.
I'm not sure 5 weeks is that long though, is it?
well... courage!!!

I just found this thread in this subforum. it has been 5 weeks since national visa center sent me a letter regarding the K1 case which will be sent to US embassey in paris. we still haven't got the package 3.

I tried to call the embassey and was told they only accept fax for queries. now we have sent 3 fax, 3/11, 3/23 and 3/24. still no any response. i am going to call the embassey again on Monday.
Have any of you had this kind of experience? it's not smooth on every steps of this journey. i am so tired these days.

Hi all,

Things are moving on a little for me: last week I did the biometrics and I got my learner's driving license !!
After I struggled with the DMV the first time a couple weeks ago I called 3 or 4 DMV Services and they had never received the request that lady said she had sent. So I ended up going to another DMV (2 houres on the bus to get there.. and it's only 12 miles away... public transportation in Northern Virginia is a joke). I told them I had no foreign driving license (I have a congolese one, no kidding I actually had driving classes there). So they allowed me to take the test and I got my driving learner's DL. The first time I actually failed the test (on the road sign part you're not allowed to make a single mistake and of course I did ONE!) so I had to go again a couple of days later.
Now I can drive with kai during 30 days and then I have to take a road test.
In the meantime the little second hand 2 doors cute Toyota Yaris that I tried last week has been sold sad.gif
mais c'est cool je commence à voir le bout du tunnel de ma galère de transport smile.gif)

C&D I really hope you can make it before he gets deployed. brrr I hated when Kai was deployed. Right now he is in a reserve training for 10 days and it reminds me of it.

About the mussels I had very good ones here last month. The only thing is they were so huge it was obsolutely discusting to look at..

Hope all is good with everyone!

Cécy: the lady took all my information and she said they had it in the system blablabla, and I think she was the manager.. and I go to DMV with my bike, so going to the next closest one (milllles away) wouldn't be an option sad.gif hopefully I'll have this sorted out by the end of this week.

C&D: Kai was in the military too (we meet when he was deployed in Irak, He visited Europe for his holidays). Well when we filled he had just left but I read a few stuff about K1 and military back then. I guess it's about the same for K3. I understood you can expedite if he is deployed, not if he is at home. isn't it weird? I mean if he is deployed you won't be able to see each other anyways ... but I guess it's because they don't want someone who is deployed to have to think and deal with all the paperwork. and that make sense too. anyways the army is used to deal with this. In what unit is he? Kai was in the 82nd Airborn, based in Fort Bragg, NC.

Regarding mooving Lucie had found a company that seemed reliable and cheap. I can't remember what the name was! Me I choose the annoying way. I'm taking 2 huge suitcases everytime I travel, and anyone who come to visit me is required to make a stop at my mum's to load some of my stuff in their bags.. not the best way but we are broke!!

Hello and welcome to all the newbies smile.gif

Today I went to DMV. The lady was soooo rude with me it was insane. She was shouting: "DO YOU OR DO YOU NOT WANT TO FILL THIS FORM?" It was crazy. Virginia issue driving license to K1 visa holder but since I have a license from another country they said they had to send a foreign driving license verification form to the State DMV in Richmond. I asked how it was working, if they just had a list of countries they would accept the driving license from. On the form it said they were actually going to check with the autorities in that country. Given that my DL is from Congo I told her it seems pretty unlikely they could make that type of verification. So I asked if I could just do the regular driving test, that I'm happy to take (I trained on their website;)) She told me that it was impossible now that they know I have a foreign license. they had to go through that process. During the whole time she was talking to me like ######. I know french bureaucratie is not much better but at least in France I'm in a position I can shout back, and now we have very good online access to all information. Here being an alien I always feel very frustrated in that type of situation, plus it seems like there is never one answer to a question. There is many depending on who you talk to!

Anyways. On another note I have my biometrics on March 4 and I'm hoping to get my EAD before April!!

Hope everyone is ok, and congrats on all recent I 129, K1 in hand, EAD, jobs and so on smile.gif

- then they called me again at that same window, same lady, and she went through all the documents I had brought (not in dept page by page but she check that everything is there) + she ask me a few question (address, when he plans to fly to the US and so on).
- 3rd and last call (there is no actual call, it's a board that has the numbers) : I went to the window in the middle to talk to the Consul. The interview can be either in French or English. She asked me how we meet, what Kai was doing, what I will be doing there, when we will get married. she didn't ask me for any evidence (like photos, travels tickets or anything).
- + I had to go back to do the finger print a few day later.

1) logically yes (at least for a K1). Since you pay your taxes the year after the taxed year (does this make sense?). so in 2009 we're gonna fill for 2008, and we where then in France so we shall pay our taxes. If you have paid taxes before I believe you can fill online. if not I guess the best thing is to contact les impôts. you can find out more on www.impots.gouv.fr (what an exciting website to start the week with!!!).

2 et 3) I'm with Cécile smile.gif

Hello again

small technical questions for you about French taxes and marriage
I don't have the answers but just want to hint on the questions

1) at some point we need to wrap up our taxes situation and clear it before leaving
anybody clear on when it is
obviously varies depending on visa K1 K3 etc...

2) when you get married in the US you may check on your "regime matrimonial" . Regime will apply either by default depending maybe of the state you are getting married, or will be established by a contract. careful about consequences for the future

3) before getting married, should you get registered at the French consulate and ask them for guidance about registering your marriage in France? I have a cousin married in las vegas and I think her country does not have the info (not sure it matters)

1) I am not completely sure so far, from what I have read, the year after you arrive in the USA you still have to pay taxes in France. If someone else could tell us exactly what we are supposed to do that would be nice!

2) Are you talking about a "prenuptial"? each state has its own 'regime matrimonial', usually it's "everything that you or your husband get while married belongs to both of you, things from before the marriage stay separate. You have to check for your state. As for doing a prenuptial contract, I read that you have to have two lawyers (one for each of you) and yours should be bilingual to insure that you are well aware of what is in the contract.

3) You can check the website of the French Consulate closer to where you will live in the USA. They usually explain how to do things. The 'normal' way to do it is to do the "publication des bans" before to get married, and then after the marriage you do the "transcription du mariage". If you skip the publication des bans, the transcription may take longer and they may ask you to come for an interview to the consulate (but I never read of anyone who had to do that here). That is what I did for the K1, things may be different for a K3.

I thought so but at the county they told us the courthouse doesn't do it anymore. we have to go through a civil or religious officiant. they gave us a list. I would rather a civil servant or a courthouse person to do it honestly, but since it's the normal way here...

Bonne Année, et bienvenue sur la côte Est!
You can get a Magistrate to marry you at the local courthouse, it's the equivalent of a civil ceremony.
Of course if you want to have a bit more of a traditional wedding and plan to invite people it would be more fun to do with a religious officiant. If your fiance goes to a church already, go there and ask. Unity church are pretty open to various believes and it's also an option if there is one close to you.

it's never been so quick at the custom. I was outside the terminal with my visa stamped and my luggages in hand less than 45 minutes after the plane landed. seriously!! if you ever fly to Dulles DC from Paris here is a good advice: fly with the 10.15am flight cause you're the only international flight arriving in Dulles at 1pm. When flying with the later flight you get stuck after the Iberia flight coming from Madrid and it's a pain..
We got our mariage licence yesterday so now we just need to contact someone to perform the ceremony. it's really weird for me that it is not performed by an officier d'état civil!

about the money to pay to the American consulate it was actually 107,42 euros!! outsdrastist if you want you can pm me with your email address and will forward you my copy of packet 4, I have it in pdf.
the one thing that you want to make sure your fiancé has ready and signed by you is the I134 (affidavit of support). U were supposed to have it ready when u sent back the packet 3 so it should be ok.

the doctor is supposed to take your fiancé in priority. I had my appointement 2 days before my consulate appointement and got my medical file ready the morning of the interview. the medical cost me about 160 euros.

and don't forget the enveloppe gonflable !

bonne chance et bonne année smile.gif

bonne année les filles !

basically they want to check that the alien is up to date with vaccinations.
so if they have no documentation about it they will probably check your fiancé's blood. They did it with me for measles (rougeole!) cause I only had one shot of the vaccin when I was a kid, and they usually do 2 in the US. So at the same time they checked HIV and Syphilis (the 2 required analyses they do) they checked that I had enought antibody against measles.
The only good thing is he can use the sécurité sociale for these tests (and not for anything else in the medical..).
I would check with the doctor as Cécile said though. They might be another way to get his medical history..
Bon courage!
