Elisha and I went down to the Social Security office to apply for her SSN this afternoon after lunch. No hassles whatsoever. I had printed out the policy document about K-1s, but the lady who waited on us seemed to be familiar with them and didn't ask for anything other than the application form and Elisha's passport. She should have the card in about a week. good.gif

I believe Odessa (of Michey and Odessa fame) is here and married to Michey now, going by the dates in her signature timeline.

OMG Richard, another delay... BTW, my fiancee never got packet 3 from Warsaw. After a week long wait after they said they sent it to her, we just faxed the checklist and DS230 pulled from their website. It looks like they have some problems after all. Ah, the Government...

We had Packet 3-related confusion as well. The Seoul consulate and Department of State computers showed that Packet 3 was sent to Elisha on September 29, but we didn't receive it until I sent them a message on the 30th—and the "re-sent" letter was dated October 1, not September 29.

I HATE letting go of my originals. But I'll do it.

For vital records like these, there really is no such thing as an "original"—not that you'll ever have in your possession, anyway. You have a certified copy of the record as it appears in the court's official records. The original remains in the possession of the court clerk or registrar in perpetuity.

You can always obtain additional certified copies, which carry the same legal weight of the originals, from the court clerk or department of vital records. Of course, there are varying degrees of expense and hassle involved in obtaining them, but losing one isn't the end of the world.

Good morning everyone!

I have a question - I think I have misunderstood something. Does the embassy need the original copy of MY divorce decree or just Lars'? I have plenty of time to send it to him but I didn't, yet. Also, do they need MY birth certificate? I have reached saturation on all of these forms and packets and immigration issues....nothing else can sink in!

In my experience, the embassy is only concerned with the beneficiary's documents. So they'll want to see HIS birth certificate and divorce decree, but couldn't care less about yours. The petitioner's eligibility has already been determined by USCIS; the consulate's responsibility is to ensure the beneficiary is eligible for the visa.

That said, the VJ guides suggest that you send him originals of everything submitted for the I-129F (which would presumably include your birth certificate and divorce decree) just in case the embassy asks to see them. But most likely they never will.

No idea—I haven't been able to find anything specific. There was a Los Angeles Times article earlier this month saying that they may have to increase fees due to budget shortfalls, but that's all I've been able to find.

I'll ask Elisha and post more if she can point me to something.

Strega! We've missed you around here!

Elisha and I are loving life together. We're in the midst of setting up housekeeping—we took delivery of our genuine Korean rice cooker yesterday—and making plans for our civil wedding and our reception. We're most likely going to go to the Social Security office next week, but we haven't settled 100% on a date for the civil wedding. We do know that we want to get it all done by the end of 2009 though, as Elisha says there are plans to raise the fee for AOS next year (per the Korean VJ-esque site she uses).

As for the DS-157, some consulates require it for K-1s, others don't; it doesn't appear that Naples does. Most (if not all) of the info on that form is covered on the DS-230 that you faxed, so it's probably unnecessary; in many cases, the consulates that don't require the DS-230 require the DS-157 and vice versa.

Thanks for the update, good luck, and don't be a stranger! smile.gif

If you want to try a different tactic, you could try faxing a letter to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services or, one step higher on the DOS food chain, the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs. The text of my letter is here: http://www.visajourn...h...t&p=3324199

For your I-134, you know the part at the bottom where it says "Intend" or "Do Not Intend".... did you copy the example on VJ with the "NA" comment, or did you put something different?

I'd love to know! Thanks!

Good morning, March!

Last night, I took Elisha to a third Korean supermarket here in northern Virginia. This one was the furthest (all of 15 minutes!) away from our house, but is the largest, newest, and nicest of the ones we've visited. In particular, she was utterly thrilled by the selection of Korean produce at this one—"They have everything!" as she put it. I know from my time in Korea how much little things like finding comfort foods from home can mean, so it's great to see her put at ease by the ready availability of these familiar items.

We're doing well. The first couple days of the transition were a bit rough, but things are going more smoothly now. We still have some logistical issues to figure out—Elisha's used to being very independent (and I certainly don't want her to be stuck at home all day!) but our current abode isn't very well situated for public transportation and she's in no hurry to start driving. But we're getting there. smile.gif

Angry at the system, not at the couples getting approved.

For sure! It's great that they have gotten things moving, but why in the world did they allow the backlog to build up as far as they did—with us as the "beneficiaries" of their neglect/incompetence—before doing something about it?

There seems to be a fairly strong consensus that if you comfortably exceed the minimums on income alone, there's no need to include information on bank accounts or other assets.

For what it's worth (as always, YMMV), I provided a letter of employment, the last six months' pay stubs, and my 2008 tax return and transcript with my I-134. We sailed through the interview.

But I bet you sailed through because you are such a good looking couple AND you are super cool, right?

Stephen... wonderful update... sorry it seemed stressful for you two... but you both are here and in the end that is all that matters!

It was a bit stressful, but that was mostly on account of the time crunch. And yes, the fact that we were able to come back together meant the world to both of us!

QUOTE
At your POE did you go through the Citizen lines or the Non-Citizen ones?

Some airline putz told us she had to go through the non-citizen line, and that I was welcome to wait and go through with her—or leave her and go through the USC line by myself. Needless to say, I waited with her. We ended up being waved over to the USC lines anyway, as they cleared out much faster than the non-citizen lines. When we got to the officer, he told us we should have gotten in the USC line from the beginning.

Another interesting note from the POE: the CBP officer told us we only needed one customs declaration for the two of us, even though we're not "legally" a family yet. Wanting to err on the side of caution, I had filled one out for her too, but he tossed it and just handed back mine.

Stephen!!!

Richard!

Back in the States, time for an update...

Wednesday evening, September 30 (Thursday morning in Korea): We finally got the Packet 3 email (dated October 1), which the Seoul Embassy and Department of State computers showed as having been sent on the 29th. Elisha promptly faxed the DS-230 Part I (after a minor meltdown occasioned by my failure to tab-separate the paperwork I sent her with Post-Its), and I submitted the interview request via the embassy website shortly thereafter. I called during the visa unit's service hours to see if they'd received everything, only to find out that they were only working 'til 1 pm as it was the day before the Chuseok holiday. Hence, no one would be in the office again 'til October 5th, the day we were penciled in (but had no confirmation) for an interview.

Thursday morning, October 1: Off to Korea! During my layover in San Francisco, I called the Department of State in Washington to see whether the interview had in fact been scheduled for the 5th. The answer: a big depressing no. The system didn't show them as having processed the Packet 3 return yet either. Then onto the airplane for the 12+ hour flight to Seoul.

Thanks to the wonders of the International Date Line, fast forward to Friday evening, October 2: I arrive in Seoul! Elisha and I have a wonderful reunion, not allowing the disappointing news on the embassy front to get us down. We spent the night in Seoul, then packed up most of her remaining belongings from the storage room at her apartment building to take back to her hometown. Got down there Saturday afternoon, greeted her mom and dad at the train station, then headed to their apartment. Spent Saturday and Sunday relaxing with Elisha and her family.

Monday, October 5: The good folks at the Seoul embassy were back to work! We received the interview letter, timestamped at 7:30 am. Our interview was scheduled for the next day, October 6! We were to report at 8 am for intake; as there was no express train that would get us there early enough, we determined that we'd need to take an overnight bus to Seoul. The rest of the day was filled with errands, errands, and more errands!

Tuesday, October 6 - INTERVIEW DAY! We arrived in Seoul around 5 am, made our way up to the embassy area, and killed time at McDonalds until it was time to head over to the embassy. We were first in the door when they opened up at 7:30, and grabbed number 1 from the machine (aside: what do you call those things, anyway?) when we got upstairs to the Immigrant Visa unit. Waited 'til just before 8, when they called our number to submit our documents through the window. Then waited... and waited... and waited. Shortly after 9, a consular officer and a Korean staff member came out to announce that they were sorry for the delay, which was due to computer problems (minor oh ####### moment) that they were working to resolve. Fortunately, about 20 minutes later, they called Elisha up for fingerprinting. 5 minutes later, they called her back up to do it again. Then, perhaps 20 minutes later, they called her up for the interview. The very kind and friendly CO swore us both in, and then proceeded to ask Elisha a couple simple questions (how did you meet? when did he propose? etc.). Last question was "When do you plan to go to the US?" She was a bit surprised when we said "this weekend," and gave us the standard "we advise people not to make travel plans prior to receiving the visa." But she was very sympathetic when I explained about getting tied up at NVC (she actually apologized for that!) and that we were trying to make up time at the embassy stage. She then told us that we were approved pending the clearing of final checks, which usually take no more than 24 hours, and that we had a shot at making our timetable.

Wednesday, October 7: I called the visa unit in the morning during the embassy's service hours; the woman I spoke to said that the fingerprint check had cleared and that Elisha's visa had been issued. This information led to a lot of confusion and stress over the next couple days! Elisha called the courier service, which told her that they hadn't received the visa yet from the embassy. This put us in a bit of a bind, as we absolutely needed the visa by Friday in order to fly on Saturday—but the visa unit only accepts calls in the afternoon on Thursdays. So we were stuck waiting.

Thursday, October 8: Still no visa. I called the embassy in the early afternoon and found out that while the visa had been approved the previous day, it wasn't actually being printed until today—and wouldn't be picked up by the courier service until Friday morning. Elisha called the courier service, where the jerk informed her that no, they wouldn't be able to deliver it the same day, and yes, we would still have to pay their $10 fee if we asked them to deliver it to another courier who could get it there the same day. That would be on top of the second courier's fee, mind you. It was looking more and more like I'd have to go back up to Seoul on Friday to collect the visa from the embassy myself. I called them to arrange that, which they graciously agreed to—but stated that it would have to be in the afternoon, as they were doing interviews all morning. Ugh! After getting this all arranged, however, we get a call back from the embassy 5 minutes later: when she went to pull the courier slip from our package, she found that it had already been picked up by the courier service after all. Another call to the service confirmed that they would indeed be able to deliver it on Friday.

Friday, October 9: This is getting long, so I'll cut to the chase: the visa arrived, but of course not until the afternoon!

Saturday, October 10: We flew back to the US together! POE at Washington Dulles was fantastic: no secondary inspection, waved right through customs, and it was off to the taxi stand for the ride home.

So, now the next phase of the journey begins: adjusting to the US, dealing with homesickness, and getting everything lined up for the civil wedding and AOS! Wish us luck, and know that all y'all are in our prayers for your journeys to progress swiftly and smoothly. And I'm sure I'll still be haunting the boards checking up on everyone and correcting the know-it-alls for the foreseeable future wink.gif

Man, sometimes I hate people.

This morning, I got this snarky private message from some witch-with-a-capital-B who's in AP at NVC. The entire text of that message was:

QUOTE
are you the one who claimed to have that fax number for the DOS and said you didn't want to share it because you thought the rest of us might "flood" the phone lines?

So (mistake #1), I responded.

QUOTE
Yes, I managed to obtain the fax number for the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs. It took a fair bit of research and, in the end, some luck.

As I stated in the public thread, I am not yet willing to divulge the number. The reason for this is simple: The Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs has jurisdiction not only over NVC, but over visa issuance at the embassies as well, and I am not willing to do anything that could possibly jeopardize Elisha's visa in any way. The fax number I obtained is not a publicly available number; it is not published anywhere on the Department of State website or anywhere else. If they suddenly start getting a ton of angry faxes from people stuck in AP at NVC, they're going to have a fair idea who passed the fax number around. I've been burned too many times in this process?5 months at VSC, then 22 days in AP at NVC?and I'm just not willing to take any chances until we have a visa in hand.

Good luck to you—I hope you're out of AP very soon. If, God forbid, you're still in AP by the time Elisha gets her visa (hopefully next week), I will gladly share the number with you. Until then, however, I simply cannot risk it. Thanks for understanding the position I'm in.

Regards, etc.

And this witch-with-a-capital-B just kept it up. Called me selfish, accused me of gloating and showing off, said posting about it "reflects badly on your character."

Good grief! Posting my letter gave people a name and a title that they could use to obtain the information. Am I selfish for not wanting to piss this woman at DOS off and have her make trouble for Elisha's visa at the consulate? Sheesh...

My NOA2 was on a Thursday (8/27), and NVC didn't have it in their system 'til very late the following Monday (8/31). Remember, NVC works two shifts, and you can call them 'til midnight EST.

I'm not there yet! I wonder why.....in the past it seemed like everyone moved out of USCIS to NVC like greased lightening.

Even more important is moving out of NVC like greased lightning. blink.gif

Heh, I've ticked off another one of these guys who thinks he knows it all. What can I say? I have a very low tolerance for stupidity and hypocrisy.

link please, I'm too lazy to start combing through...

I love to read what you, Scott and Jim post. You guys really know your stuff for those embassys.

I just read a lot on here, and I remember what I read. And if I'm not sure, I do a little research or refrain from posting rather than just spouting off nonsense.

Y'all are making me hungry! I can cook a few things reasonably well, but y'all put me to shame. And Elisha's from the Korean province that's known as the culinary wasteland of the entire peninsula (and she'd tell you the same thing). I love Korean food though, and everything she's cooked for me has been fantastic. I'm looking forward to whipping up Korean dishes together when she gets here smile.gif
