United KingdomWhy did you decide to make the move to the USA and not the other way?
My fiancee has a house, two dogs and is an accountant, so she'd need to do some re-training to stay in the same field if she moved here instead of me to the UK. Along with that, our combined salaries would barely reach an apartment here, let alone a house with room for the dogs.

On the flip side, there's a chance I could continue working remotely for my existing UK employer after moving to the US, otherwise I start again over there. I sold my apartment here in 2009, and am currently living back with my parents, so there's not as much upheaval from this end.

As previously mentioned by others, once I have US citizenship, we may choose to come to the UK until my fiancee (wife, by then) could eventually obtain UK citizenship.

United KingdomFor everyone between NOA2 and interview in London
Seven days is about right - interviewed on a Monday, passport and brown envelope arrived the following Monday.

I held off buying the plane ticket until I saw it appear on the DX website for delivery - at least then you know that it is on its way.

I fly two weeks tomorrow - and can't wait! Finish work this Friday, so these are my last working days for this year, probably Posted Image The joys of a K1 and waiting for the EAD after marriage!

Good luck Posted Image

Take a book - I was there for 3 hours and there's no TV or anything.

Do keep your eyes and ears open though - while I was there two 'I' numbers were called multiple times over the loud speaker system, including one having a 'final call' - why you would chance missing the interview itself I don't know!

So, for those who've just had interviews, what's the latest on the embassy - what did you take in with you?

Did you have your paperwork in a backpack, carrier bag, anything like that?

I know that phones and other electronic equipment aren't allowed, but a backpack would be useful to have with me Posted Image

Congrats to all - based on your timescales, assuming I get approved on Monday, my passport should be back with the visa in it before I am! Eek, I have to sign for it, don't I! #######! I'm away with work from Tuesday to Saturday afternoon..

Waiting on my interview date.
A couple of questions, since this thread is active..
What is the average packet 3 processing time for London (Rough estimate)? I read somewhere it's around 3 weeks.
Can you only find out about what they've "logged" by phoning that expensive number?

I returned my packet 3 on 17th May, it was delivered on 18th May, and according to DoS was logged on 26th May, so just over a week in my case.

United KingdomFor everyone between NOA2 and interview in London

Hi all

We just got our LND number. Our case was sent to London on May 27th. I'm going to call and book my medical today. For those of you who already had theirs, what is the medical like? What do they check, how nice are they and how long does it take? I'm always a little worried when it comes to hospitals/check-ups and stuff like that!

Mine was Friday, probably the first appointment after their lunch (12.50) - I was probably in there for about 45 minutes in total. Vaccinations nurse, straight in to x-ray, back to waiting room for 5 mins or so, then in to the doctor for height, weight, eyesight test, blood pressure, check your eyes with an opthalmoscope, listen to heart and lungs, prod the stomach area and check that you are the gender you are supposed to be, and finally blood test. All three medical people were nice.

Check that you've had two MMR jabs, normally around a month apart - I hadn't and was offered choices of 1) do at own doctor's and they'll give me a form for the doc to fill out and return 2) wait until AOS in the US or 3) pay £37 to get it done there and then - I paid the money and had it done, so that there's no delays

Packet 3 was sent in on 17th May, and I had my medical last Friday (27th).

Results of the medical should be at the embassy by the start of next week.

United KingdomAmazon & UK Treats

When I first moved here a girl I worked with told me Hershey's "tastes like sick" :(

I can see where they come from, although, to me, Hershey's just tastes smokey. It isn't greatly enjoyable to my palette, though.

There are a couple of UK stores around Salt Lake City, and Whole Foods in SLC carries small jars of Marmite & Colman's, Heinz Baked Beans and Weetabix that I've seen.

Organic Ketchup is the one to buy (by whichever manufacturer) as they use cane sugar, not corn syrup, and find Mexican sodas (or Throwback/Kosher) if you miss the taste, as they are sugar rather than HFCS. My brother-in-law's wife is Mexican, and she recommended a Mexican grocery store for bits and pieces too.

One thing I do miss is not being able to buy a gammon joint in the store - I wanted to make Nigella's gammon in coca-cola recipe, but that'll have to be next Christmas, giving me time to find some decent uncooked gammon.

United KingdomWhat do you say when Americans tell you they are Scottish?
Haven't had any of that, luckily - the closest was the delivery guy from RC Willey (department store here in UT) telling me about how he lived in Manchester for a couple years. I have had the standard "Are you Australian?" question asked a couple of times though - not sure how close a Zummerzet accent is to an Antipodean one though Posted Image

I don't think that Americans tend to mention English heritage very often - it's not as "glamorous" as one of the Celtic nations or other countries where English isn't the native language.

My wife is part Swedish, part Dutch, part Scottish, but makes no real mention of it - her last remaining grandparent is Dutch born (came to the US when she was 5) - she does tend to focus on the Scottish bit though (member of a Scottish society, for instance) although, as she (and her mom) have actually been to Scotland, it is slightly better than some claiming Scottish ancestry.

My family, having gone back to around 1800, are still mostly stuck within about 50 miles of where I was born in Somerset, so we're not huge travelers Posted Image

Do you have to list every single item separately, or, say, 50 books, 75 CDs, etc?

<grumbles> :P

I'm not sure how I would redeem my miles for ... erm... miles. Or how many 16,000 would buy me. Wish I'd thought of that.

How much did the miles cost you?

An extra 10,000 miles with AA cost me $275, I think - that took me to 33,000 miles, and the flight uses 30,000 of them.

I have 50,000 will that get my honey anywhere?? (never used miles before)

Are they all on the same airline? If so, then you should be able to choose to use air miles from the airline's own booking website - for instance, on AA, when I go to book a flight at www.aa.com, it gives me the option of return, one-way or redeem AAdvantage miles.

On most airline airmiles systems you can also transfer miles between people, I think.

Of course, by the time I get visa approval, it will all be for nought as the qualifying miles will've shot back up to 60,000 Posted Image

Assuming the price doesn't go up, which it probably will once I've got my visa approved Posted Image, I bought some extra AA air miles, and according to their website, my single from LHR to SLC will cost the grand total of £120 (plus 30,000 air miles) Posted Image

How long does it usually take before you recieve your visa? I don't want to book my flight until I have it, but am hoping to fly pretty soon

I think the guide is 7-10 days, but it seems that people tend to get it quicker than that, around 3-4 days, but it depends where you are in the country (London gets it quickest, for example).

Did you send in the DS-2001 checklist already?

If so then yes just waiting for the interview (assuming you've paid for it).

It won't hurt to call the DoS either.

Yup, DS-2001 and accompanying forms were logged at the embassy on 26th May. Gin will be calling DoS on Monday to see if the medical results have been logged too.

Gin was told by the DoS guy that London will send out the letter "when they have time to get around to it" (paraphrasing slightly Posted Image )

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionThe medical & vaccinations
I've just received my vaccinations list from the doctor, and amazingly it goes all the way back to my first childhood ones in 1973 (yes, I know, I'm older than a fair number of people on here ).

From the list:

1973 DTP + Polio (booster in 1976)
1973 Measles
1984 BCG (TB vaccination)
1986 Tetanus
1986 Polio
2000 Tetanus booster
2000 Polio booster
2000 Hep A (booster in 2001)
2000 Typhoid

From that, I would assume that I now need another Tetanus booster and, presumably, the MMR? I had chickenpox in my early 20s, so the Varicella issue should be fine, I think

Where did you get the EXP 24 MAR 2011A bit from?

Our NOA2 for London was on 27th April at the NVC, so putting in EXP 28 APR 2011A, would the result shown then possibly be my case?

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJust filed for removal of conditional GC and lost GC

Kathryn,

thanks for the link.
All SB-1070-like state laws have so far been challenged on their constitutionality. I read Georgia's HB 87 bill for the first time and it requires " that officers who have "probable cause to believe that a suspect has committed a criminal offense" would be authorized to verify that suspect's immigration status.
That's pretty heavy stuff to begin with.
Yet, Georgia issues driver's licenses for non-US citizens only for a certain time period, so that alone gives the police officer a clue about whether or not the driver he (or she) just pulled over is a USC or not.
I expect more Arizona/Georgia style laws to be introduced in the near future; on the same token everyone with some kind of competence in constitutional law states that those laws will be struck down by the US Supreme Court eventually based on the Supremacy Clause.

But, in the mean time, it may be wise to carry either the GC or a copy in those states that have enacted such laws?
