CanadaMoving to canada
Why not work on contract. My wife works on Contract for her old company she left in Canada. That way the company just writes out a check and writes it off as a business expense.. no further tax reporting required. If you want to keep your old benefits and whatnot.. fawgett about it.

CanadaTims.
Well, The wife and I went to Mystic Connecticut for a weekend getaway and wow! There are 2 timmies in this little town! The coffee tastes the same as I remember it too! And the Crueller, pronounced Crawler down here, was all nice and gooey like I remember too. The only thing different was the napkins which were not the thick brown ones with the logo on them. They were the cheap thin white ones. All and all, a nice experience.

Long Live Timmys.

CanadaDid any Canadians use James's shortcuts for CR-1?
I had good luck just being prepared. I knew what was coming and what had to go back immediately. Plus the DS3032 was easy cause my wife was with me in the states when it came. Everything went back to them the same day and the shortcuts can take 20 days off that easily. I would use them but be carefull. You have to know what you are doing.

CanadaFingerprints for RCMP Check??
Well, chances are like 1 in 10000 or something probably.

Hey Now! Its a fun piece of paper to have. Minutes of fun I think.

NO Criminal record ever, NO Fingerprinting, simple as that!!! (unless the USA governement specifically says that you do!!)

Except for in rare instances where this advice will cost you a 5 month delay as opposed to 35.00. You should be good to go :-)

CanadaFingerprints for RCMP Check??
AHA! Confirmation! I used to always say do both but everyone laughed at me.

See, I had my wife do both.. she came home and told me she didnt need the fingerprints.

Grrrrrrrrr...

I made her go back and do it. The paperwork arived from the RCMP about a week before her interview. It was spooky.

We did not need it but I was kind of hoping they would ask anyhow..

CanadaFingerprints for RCMP Check??
You have to remember too that the RCMP doesn't sit around waiting to run fingerprint checks for Canadians leaving the country who need to satisfy a request by the foreign government. Thats why it makes sense.

I am waiting for the first baboon to come on here who gets a name check with a criminal record, goes to the interview, gets told they need a fingerprint check, and comes on here bitching about how long it takes.

Hasn't happened yet though.

Canadapolice certificate
Yes, and the Finger Print check takes many months. (4-6). So, even though they never went to Canada, they want a police certificate from Canada because she applied for a Visa to Canada.. how the heck did they even find out about that? You didnt tell them did you? When they ask if you have applied for a Visa before, they mean to the United States I think not anywhere in the world.

I dont get this. You have the registration papers, (What Americans refer to as title) and the title, when you get it, will say MAY BE SUBJECT TO UNDISCLOSED LEAN on it or something..

Canadabank account in US
Royal has a miniscule US presence. Also, get a US dollar account, you can transfer Canadian funds to US funds then write yourself a check down here. An AMEX card is a good thing because you can transfer that when you move.

CanadaOne final question before leaving to Montreal
You don't NEED to take them but its good to have it all in case something gets lost on their end. I doubt you will find anyone who needed a copy of their original petition. Unlike the Fingerprint security check they ask for once in a while that nobody gets.

CanadaImporting my car - I WANT TO SCREAM
Sell them and buy a used one when you get here. Probably less hassle overall. And a US model is at least saleable in the US. If you try to sell a Canadian model down here later you wont get much. Nobody wants a registration with MAY BE SUBJECT TO UNDISCLOSED LEAN on it or a dashboard that makes you look like a speeder. Plus whats up with that mileage?

CanadaBank Suggestions
Ok, whats the deal with customshouse.com.. I tried to set up an account on there and they want things like credit references? I just want to transfer money between accounts. Right now, I transfer the money from my Canadian Chequing account into a Canadian based US dollar account on-line. Then I just write a check on that account and deposit it into my US checking account. Im looking for better exchange rates. This clearinghouse looks like it might be a better deal but I cant get past the sign up page.

how did you open the account? If it works good I can close yet another Canadian account which is always a good thing to me. Less paperwork!

CanadaFees/Taxes to anticipate as result of moving from Canada?
I left both mine and my wifes. They are both self directed RRSP's and at two different brokerages. Both brokerages are licenced in Connecticut so they had o issues with me maintaining them there.

You have to report them to the IRS each year and disclose how much tax deferred income was made. For example. If you have an RRSP with 100,000.00 in it and you leave on August 31st, 2006. Then on December 31st your RRSP account has 110,000.00 in it you have a gain of 10,000.00 which you must declare. You can elect to defer the gains indefinately. You must also report the 110,000.00 as a foreign trust account.

Other than that, no problemo.

CanadaFees/Taxes to anticipate as result of moving from Canada?
What Reba said.. the best option, if your worried about CCRA considering you to be a Canadian resident for tax purposes is to close all of your accounts. That might not be the best investment option though.

There is a number (100,000.00) in one account / investment that triggers this behaviour almost automatically. Its reasonably difficult to dispute. (There is a hearing) and at that point you will have to show you are a bonafide US resident and not a border hopper who has kept their provincial health plan and maintains a home in both countries which is what they are looking for.

Or just ask for a US dollar bank draft. They cash those at BOA no problem.

Canadaduel residency to retain Canadian Health Insurance
As long as you meet the test that Alberta has for residency you are ok in this. If you both want coverage you both need to meet the test.

you must be

1) legally entitled to be or to remain in Canada and makes his/her permanent home in Alberta;
2) committed to being physically present in Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12 month period (NOTE: Periods of temporary absence will be counted as being physically present in Alberta. If you are planning to be away for more than six months, contact our office.);

3:) not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another province, territory or country;

4) any other person deemed by the regulations to be a resident not including a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta.

CanadaCanadian airports that are pre-clearance for U.S. Immigration?
The bus is there to take you to gates that are far away. Just like any other significant airport with multiple terminals. I dunno. I normally walk cause I know the way. If you fly on a carrier out of the same terminal you normally dont have to take a bus. Sometimes from Gate F though, you have to take the tram thing.. Whatever.

CanadaCanadian airports that are pre-clearance for U.S. Immigration?
Confusing?

I can see that. First you need to know which terminal 1, 2, 3 or whatever they are up to now.

Then you need to know arival or departure deck.

Then you need to know your carrier.

Then walking up to the desk.. one foot in front of the other now.

Canadajust starting out
The process is somewhat designed around the American citizen marying in the foreign country. So yes, the process is the same. You have to get that marriage certificate and get yourself a few additional certified copies of it. At the same time get certified copies of your long form Canadian birth certificate and get certified copies of the USC's long form birth certificate.

You need police certificates from every country you have lived in for 6 months or longer since you were 16. The police do these checks, at least in Canada based on your name. They only want your current address. If you have ever been arrested or have anything else nasty on your police certificate, you will need a fingerprint check.

The first form you file is an I-130. It gets filed in the service center having jurisdiction over the USC's current address. After you get the receipt from the I-130 you file a K3 petition (I-129F).

Ottawa! Thats a new one.

Weird. Hopefully the NVC will straighten it out.

Your approved petition should travel to the NVC, have a case number assigned to it, and then what happens I forget. I think it goes to Montreal where it sits for five months till they feel they have time to see you.

CanadaCar to the US- Duty??
Yeah, you need to pay duty on Japanese made cars. The VIN number denotes the point of mfg. Ie JN1CAXXXXX is a Japanese car imported into Canada. Remember, not all Hondas, Toyotas etc are made in Japan.

That J means DUTY. It is a small ammount.

When I imported my Maxima, as the USC returning, I was asked how long have I been in Canada? I said Oh, I dunno.. 40 years.. he went pfft. and didnt charge me the duty. Its only like 1% of the Kelly blue book value. So 10K = 100.00 Not a big deal.

CanadaShuttle from airport to La Tour Centre Ville?
You can take a bus right downtown. After deplaning and gathering your baggage. There is a sign that says Busses. You will see a big sign with bus numbers and where they go. The maps are available on the Web too. A Cap is flat rate probably 40.00.

CanadaPost dated visa

So if I understand correctly, my NOA2 will expire March 7th? So I should get my visa before then, and if I need an extension, the COnsulat will give it to me? The earliest I could get my visa is Feb., cause I don't move to the US til July. Make sense

Normally the extension is granted by the consulate in order to make up for their slow processing. Lets say you got your P3 today and they couldnt set a date prior to March 7, they will then extend the validity of your NOA2 in order to cover the late interview. Im not sure how long it is taking to send out P3's and schedule interviews at the moment but it looks like you should be fine with that July date.
cmartynNot TellingCanada2006-09-09 21:39:00
CanadaPost dated visa
The NOA2 is valid for 6 months. This means the Visa must be issued prior to that. However, the consulate can extend the validity if required. They are inclined to do so if they are backed up all to #######. However, what you are talking about is getting an extension now rather than later. Thats more tricky.

Canadaestablishing credit for us canucks
Sadly enough, it does help. Unlike in Canada where it does not. Good Luck. My wife has a better credit rating than I do because of this and the fact she got a Macys store card a year before she even moved here. Macys used her Canadian ID Number and issued her the card. Then when she got her SSN she changed it at Macys and the entire history (all 1 year of it) Moved onto her credit file. So, she has a years longer history than I do on that one card. Couple that with the two cards of mine she is authorized on and voila, even though she has no job her Fico is 745 and mine is 719.

Gufawwwww!

Oh Brother.

A Mars Bar in Canada IS NOT THE SAME AS A MILKY FRIGGIN WAY.

They are similar but different. A Milky Way in the US is the same as a Milky Way in Canada.

A Mars Bar, is smaller in length, thicker and is more dense. The taste is in the same family but it is not as light and fluffy.
