PhilippinesOn the wya to Cebu

Run Herschel Run - hey I'm always looking for insight and tips on how to help my fiance adjust here in the U.S. It'd be great if you could describe things she liked, things she didn't like, things you did that helped her adjust that actually helped her, anything like that. Thanks.
:)

Rice my man... Lots and Lot's of rice... :)

I think one of the biggest things for me was that I already had a group of friends that were married to Pinay. Her second night her, we all meet for supper just like we always did. It gave her a support group of people to talk to, lean on and question. That made it very easy for me. Seek out some other Phil-Am couples if you can. It was like she had her own sponsor. The adjustment was not hard.

You are on the East coast , from the West Coast I had 19 hour flight in Delta with no private TV. Enjoy you trip buddy. My fiancee will be here in less than 3 weeks

Imagine how good you think it's going to be and multiply it by 4. We have been married 10 months and I don't regret it one second. Of course there are going to be some adjustments, you will say something very normal one day and she will take it wrong or vice versa. I know your excited. I think the last 3 weeks of waiting were the hardest. Your tired of chating, your tired of paper work, and your just ready for your new life.

Good luck.. P.S. carry rice to the airport.

My total travel time is 23 hours. 3.5 hours in Korea.

PhilippinesOn the wya to Cebu

If you are on one of the Asian-based airlines it won't be too bad at all - they have great air staff, and you get a private TV with tons of great movies to pick from to watch, or you can get free booze and go to sleep. ;-)

I enjoy Cebu. Check out Ayala Mall - beautiful place to hang out and have coffee or lunch in the terrace area.

Oh and one crucial tip. When you are flying back out of Cebu leave plenty of time to get to airport. You might think it's a 1 hour cab ride but if traffic is bad or it rains and creates flooding on the roads it might be a 3 or 4 hour journey to the airport.....Cebu has terrible drainage infrastructure, made worse by the trash and litter that washes into the drains when it rains creating clogs in the little drainage infrastructure that does exist.

We will be staying Talisay. My brother in Law will drive us. Ayala is nice, but I spent most of my mall time at SM. That is one big mall. We are already married but flying back to have a family wedding.

PhilippinesProtests at USEM?

Don't these guys realize because they are making such fuss about this film that more and more people are curious and will now look at it?

All they are doing is re enforcing what a lot of us already think of the "religion of Love and Peace"

Beheading ok

PhilippinesHow long will it take to receive the visa after we get approve?

It can take 5 to 10 days after approval. My fiancee received it 8 days after her September 7 approval.

Seems like it was about 7 days for us also...

PhilippinesPoint of Entry and Travel Questions

When possible AVOID Chicago. I came back from the RP late FEB 2012 and they were RUDE, PUSHY, RAISED VOICES, NO SMILES, FROWNED FACES and being an Army Veteran of 30 years I am no wimp!!! I would NEVER send My Sunshine through that all alone. I will bring Her through Detroit DTW POE instead.

Mr Pangga :)

Good Luck & GOD Bless

I had the same experience in the workers affirmative action paradise of Atlanta. The clerk actually threw papers he did not need back at me. If I had not been on the wrong side of customs in a secure area it would have been on

PhilippinesWhen to buy plane tickets through K1 process

Korean Air in my opinion is the best Airline on the earth! Planes are comfortable and the flight attendants boy (i wish they made a Korean Air Flight Attendant Calender!)I would buy that every year until i started to Rigor. I just bought my tickets for October through ASAP and choose to go with United. I am traveling from Tulsa to Houston. Houston to Hawaii. Hawaii to Guam. Guam to Manila. The lay overs are less than an hour and a half. Monreal's cousin just recently took the same flight and said that it pretty easy. I always flew from Chicago to Seoul and i just can't do it again. My dream is to fly business class on Korean Air with my own flight attendant! lol!

I was in a position to fly business last trip on KAL. Just a one time thing, I doubt I could ever do it again, especially now that I am married. It was just a once in a lifetime present to myself. Yes it was nice. More than anything the seat. Motorized foot rest. It lay down almost vertical. The stewardess ( I was single then Disclaimer ) were beyond smoking hot and so friendly. The best part was the seat. As far as the food and service, I was content just to have some water and watch movies. No one sat on my whole row. They actually put me in first on the leg to Cebu, because there was so few people.

This Sept it will be economy all the way. I am a big guy but my wife is tiny so hopefully that will offset each other. However the 14 hour leg scares me.

Tell me about the united flight ? How long are the longs. I would love to land every 6-7 hours and stretch for an hour.

PhilippinesWhen to buy plane tickets through K1 process

Which site did you use? I am buying 2 round trip tickets for me and Monreal for october tommorrow. I have looking at ASAP tickets and they are pretty darn cheap. Like 2,200 for both of us.

I checked several sites to confirm price then called Korean Air directly. It was about a hair under 1400 apiece. I probably could have found a little cheaper with another airline, but the Atlanta to Korea to Cebu flight on Korean Air is the fastest in the industry and goes straight to Cebu with only one stop. 23 hours. It is well worth the extra 200 or so per ticket.

Also I have a Korean Air Visa and I charge anything and everything I can and then pay for it at the end of the month. Once this trip is posted to my Skypass miles I will have more than enough miles for a free ticket, lounge upgrades etc etc. May even get lucky and be able to upgrade to business at the last second on the way over there.

Not trying to advertise but hit this girl up on FB for ticket help. She works for Virginia Beach Travel in Manila ( Yes go figure the name) anyway she got us a last minute ticket on KAL. Manila to Korea to Atlanta, for dirt cheap 1 way. Saved us a lot and that is the best flight to the east coast time wise. She was someone the wife knew.

PhilippinesWhen to buy plane tickets through K1 process

Hello just wondering if anyone can share their experiences on buying the plane tickets for their fiance through the K1 visa process.

I have no idea when i should try and buy ours. It would be nice to get them 3 months in advance in order to get the lowest price but with all the waiting on approvals and everything it looks like i will have to purchase them a week after she gets her visa or something

Im planning to go there for a week then come back to the U.S with her. I also am thinking it would be better to get a round trip ticket for her as well just in case she has a change of heart. I heard its cheaper then a one way ticket anyways

When you have the visa in hand. Unless you like to gamble.

PhilippinesKorean Air vs Delta to Manilla

We're in the planning stages of going to get Rovie. I have been flying Korean Air to and from Cebu and just love them. BUT......in looking at airfare for the first of December, there is a huge difference between Korean and Delta. Flying Delta in the states, IMHO, sucks. I avoid them when ever I can for domestic travel. So can someone tell me how they are on the overseas routes? Anyone with experience with both?

Tanks.....

Got back yesterday from Cebu on KAL. Top notch...P.S. No faster way to get to Cebu from Atlanta than KAL even with the 3-4 hour stop in Korea.

Philippineswhen to get a social security number

Fiancee is here in the states..... the K 1 flow chart says....get your social security number before getting married and then change the name after marriage. Our local SS office said we can't get a SS number until after we marry on a K 1 visa.... Hows correct?? and Why get before marriage?

Thanks

We got married about 6 weeks after she got here. I did not really see any point in getting it before we got married then having to make another trip to the SS office. Nothing much to be gained by doing it before your married other than feeling like your one step further along the journey. You can open bank accounts etc with a Taxpayer Id number.

You don't need your SSN to start your AOS, and getting it before you get married is not going to help speed up your AOS>

My companies insurance company BBS tried to refuse sign up without a SSN. After a very tersely worried E-mail explaining the law the caved in.

Thank you, I was actually wondering about this... can I still claim him when he's not a US citizen? My fiance is scheduled to come on November 15th... yikes, that doesn't give a lot of time to plan a wedding!! Although, justice of the peace could work and then a bigger one later? :)

You sure can. As long as you are married. I claimed my wife for 2012 and she is still a long way from citizen. Just got our AOS this year.

I just wanted to remind my fellow VJ's who have fiancee's due in the next few months.

We are approaching the end of the year. If you are married before December 31st you can claim her on your Income Tax return.

Since it is almost 100% guaranteed that your fiancee will not have any income to report in the U.S. for 2012 this will save you a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I am not suggesting getting married for this purpose, I am just saying that if you are planing on a January or February wedding move it up and save the money. .I did this last year and it saved a large sum on my taxes.

Philippinesprepare for interview help!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell that to the lady who was ahead of us. That may be a prescreen option, but the CO never gave her such an option during the final interview. Just pointing out what we observed prior to our own interview. She was with her American Fiance, who for whatever reason chose to sit down down for the interview instead of standing beside her. Perhaps it was his choice of action that initiated that line of questioning. I guess go with the idea that every interview is different as are the COs. Just be prepared for anything.

Our interview(with a different CO) was hassle-free, but we were prepared(over) for any situation that we thought we could encounter. We chose a course of action that included our CO, meaning we were talking to him and tried to get into mode where it was a personal conversation instead of a formal interview. We noticed our CO was married, so we asked asked questions like, Hello sir how are you this afternoon? We noticed that you are married,is she also filipina? How long have you worked here in USEM? If you can connect with someone on a human level and try to understand them, I've noticed people are usually more willing to help. Paying attention to detail and knowing how to speak to someone could be the difference from having a pleasant or unpleasant interview experience IMO.

I suspect this is onecase when the Fiancee going to the interview, actually hurt the case. I bet if he had stayed home they would have been approved. They did something that red flagged them big time.

I suspect them not being able to communicate was just the tip of the iceberg.

Philippinesprepare for interview help!!!!!!!!!!!

Relax, be honest, and smile. If your relationship is real and you have the requested documents and such you will be just fine.

Worse thing to do? Not show up, forget your paperwork. Serious ... relax all will be fine.

Second what he said. My wife has been here almost a year now. I did it, and almost all do it. we over prepare and get too nervous about the interview. Like he said, if your paperwork is correct and relationship meets the guidelines you are not going to be denied. You do not need 50 photos and 5lbs of chat transcripts.

I know of only a few that have been turned down or delayed. If I remember correct, the main thing was the affidavit of support and meeting income requirements, and proof related to that.

They hardly looked at my wife's package. I don't think they even looked at a photo. If I remember correct she only had about 5 mins of total face time.

Philippineshow long to hear from manila

Hello everyone,

How long does it take on average to get your package from Manila? We had our MNL# number for two weeks now and as well as interview date. Do they send it by regular mail or by Fed ex? Thanks for the input?

PhilippinesMost boring visa interview ever

So, she was so nervous that she had a small vomit in the hotel room the night before interview.(She will kill me for mentioning that  ).

Anyway, we spent SO MUCH time, money, and effort preparing all supporting evidence, chat logs, phone records, pictures, documents, etc....($300+ to send all that to her), they asked for NONE of that.

But, they did ask to see 1 document that is NOT listed as a requirement for interview. I will get to that one later.

They asked her only 3 questions. 1) "Who is your petitioner"? Reply: My husband, Thomas P______ J_______.
2) "You have a son"? Reply: Yes
3) "Oh? You were married before? Reply: No

This is where all you IR-1/CR-1 applicants who have a child will want to listen.

Interviewer: "You will need to go apply for your "CEMAR" to show that you have never been married before".

My wife: "Oh, I have that already" ...the interview had a look of surprise on her face.

Interviewer: "Ok then, your APPROVED!

My wife said thank you to VJ....that CEMAR was her "Saving Grace"! APPROVED!!!

Congrats. I think Fedex stock would go down if onerealized they don't need all those chat transcripts and phone logs. :)

PhilippinesFiling marriage in U.S. with Philippine Consulate in Chicago

We are both Catholic, but had a civil wedding here. So can we do a renewal of vows without a marriage license in a Catholic wedding in the philippines?

Just as a footnote our renewal of vows was done by a Methodist Minister. I had been married before etc and I think that is what was a problem for the Priest.

PhilippinesFiling marriage in U.S. with Philippine Consulate in Chicago

Why would you want to report marriage in USA to Philippines Embassy?

Because they will report it to the NSO in the Philippines and the Philippines will recognize your marriage. It's really easy, cost only 25 dollars, and as opposed to the Visa process is quick.

It is also a must if your spouse wants to hold dual citizenship or change her name on her Philippine passport.

PhilippinesFiling marriage in U.S. with Philippine Consulate in Chicago

Jovi and I are married since July 8, 2012. I know we can report the marriage to the Philippine Consulate in Chicago, Illinois. The questions I have are 1) Will they report it to the NSO Office in Manila so the marriage is recognized, 2) If they d and we want to renew our wedding vows in front of her family and friends, will we be required to get a marriage license and wait the 10 day waiting period, have to get the certificate of legal capacity, get CENOMARS for each of us and attend the BS seminar on family plannig? 3) If we still have to get a marriage license, are there any provisions for couples who are already married wanting to renew thier wedding vows without having to wait the 10 day waiting period and jump through all of these hoops? It seems to me that if you are married in the United States, then the Philippines should recognize it if you produce a certified marriage certicate. I know I can have Jovilyn's passport changed from her maiden name to her married name, but it would require and appearance at the Philippine Consulate unless they happen to visit Indianapolis likee I heard they have a tendency to do by going to other cities. Anyone who has any experiences in what I am asking please feel free to share them with me. Take care.

Rick

You can just send in your report of Marriage to the Embassy in Washington. We did back in July and withing a few days the embassy called to tell me I forgot the check DUH! I sent it right away.

We traveled back to Cebu last month for the family wedding. The family in Cebu had already gone and gotten a copy of our marriage certificate from NSO so it went from the Embassy to the NSO in Cebu quickly. All we did was give the preacher a copy of the wedding certificate, and they just performed a wedding but filed no paperwork. No point since we are already married. Dealing with the Philippine embassy was quick and easy. No problem.

On edit we did not change her passport. We traveled under her maiden name, and had no problems. We will change it when it expires in 2 years. Of course like the OP said changing it is no problem either.

PhilippinesPaying tax??? CFO said so???

Could it be exempt only for permanent residency rather than conditional residency I wonder?

No I did not read it clearly. You have to pay it unless you go get a Travel Tax Exemption Certificate in Manila. Well I am in Cebu once very two years. It's not worth 35 bucks for me to go to Manila. Heck for that matter across town. So yes they still charge it unless you go get that certificate., which I am not going to do.

S Nationals and Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) are exempt from the Philippine Travel Tax. US Permanent Residents need to secure a Travel Tax Exemption Certificate from the Philippine Tourism Authority at the Department of Tourism Building at TM Kalaw Street, Ermita Manila. The Philippine Travel Tax is PHP1,620.00 (approximately $35.00).

From the Philippines Embassy website:

TRAVEL TAX AND AIRPORT FEES
Philippine Nationals are expected to pay for the Philippine Travel Tax upon departure from the Philippines. It is usually paid at the airport upon departure or; oftentimes, already included in the cost of the ticket when purchased. US Nationals and Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) are exempt from the Philippine Travel Tax.

All passengers departing from the NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) are expected to pay the Airport Terminal Fee of PHP750.00 (approximately $17.00). No one is exempt from paying the Airport Terminal Fee.

Philippines Embassy link.

Note: The terminal fee was lowered earlier this year and currently is PHP550.00

Green card holders still have to pay the 1600. I was just there

PhilippinesHow soon is TOO SOON?

Would applying for a K-1 visa after only knowing each other 7 months and 1 visit be TOO SOON in the eyes of the USCIS? Has anyone here applied within the same time frame and been approved? While I don't want to make a mistake by being impatient, I would also rather not delay starting the process any longer than necessary.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Almost my exact time frame. We have been happily married a year next month and she has her green card. As long has your relationship is real, you have proof and, you meet the income guidelines, you are both free to marry, etc you will have no problems. Everybody including me over stressed about the task ahead of you. I have never heard of a case in which both parties meet the guidelines and followed the rules, and where turned down. Take it serious, dot your I's and cross your T's but don't feel like your in a court case because your not.. This is an administrative process much like applying for a gun permit or car loan. If you fill out the right paper work correctly , pass the background check/credit report, and meet the requirements you will be approved. Also you don't need to send 100 pictures, a 10 page narrative on how you met, and 10 lbs of proof at any stage of the process, I am of the opinion it slows it down. My sweet landed in the USA a little under 5 months from the time we filed the K-1.

As you start your Journey I would also caution you this. Be careful of the answers you get here. Some people will drift in here that are fairly new to this, and sometimes, people give out bad info. I don't think it's on purpose but the guess, although they sound like experts. Look at the majority of the answers, research and make sure before you move forward. A lot of us that are further along in the process tend to stop osting after we settle into our new life, and often times the so called experts are newbies.

There is one more experienced poster in here that is very active, "Hank" I have never seen him miss on an answer. I think he has most of his info on cut and paste, because he answers the same questions over and over, but what you get from him is always dead on accurate. Heck I have even been technically wrong on a point once or twice, so like I said pay attention. I just don't post that often in here anymore.

Good luck. It will be over before you know it.. So Yes get your K-1 moving now.

On edit I see someone has already told you more than 1 visit will help. If you have the time and money by all means go it will not hurt. However going to the interview or making multiple trips will not affect the outcome of your K-1 in anyway other than helping you get to know your future wife better. The Legal requirement is to have met in person 1 time jn the past two years. That's it. Your not going to get bonus points for multiple trips. If you are like me and in a job that makes it hard for you to take long periods off for travel, then 1 times all you need.

PhilippinesBring Wedding Dress from Philippines to US

What is the best way to bring a wedding dress to the US without getting it crushed or soiled? Will using a shipping carrier work? Should she take it as a carry on on the plane as a hand item? If so how should she pack it and meet the Delta travel criteria? Any ideas will be appreciated.

We just got back last Friday with a Wedding dress. Much like everyone here we just packed it very carefully in a big suitcase. It was fine. In fact , it is at the cleaners now. Get prepared you are probably going to spend more in the u.S. to get it cleaned than you paid for it.
