To use it for your visa application, it needs to be no more than one year old at the time of the interview, as far as I know. I paid $45 for mine (Canada-wide, working with minors etc) from my local police station. I also had to wait 6 weeks... it seems to vary across the country...

If she's already in the US, and they've just now decided to get married, it's quite a different process. Maybe look in the forums about Adjusting Status from Tourist or Student visa on this site for information about that. It's a little more straightforward than the K1 route as long as they had no intention of marrying when she first entered the States with her non-immigrant visa.

Well, are they filing an I129f petition for a K1 visa? If that's the case, you can indicate on the petition which consulate you'd like to be interviewed at.

... It felt like I could go online and change it on a whim, except no other dates were available for a little while. Once you book a date, it is possible to see the other available dates and move it without a penalty, up to 3 days before the interview date. But it might depend on the kind of visa your interview is for.

I check obsessively (not that I'll likely change mine at this point) so if there's an earlier date I see, I'll be sure to let you know! :)

I am so glad I'm not alone!! Thank you! Have you changed yours? I thought you were later in May?

Hi all, the DoS told me this morning that Packet 4 was sent Monday so I booked my interview for July 15th, which is far too far away to be acceptable, but at least it's booked

So, I guess it turns out either of the addresses, with XpressPost or DHL, it all works out eventually...?

Anyway, I am happy, but will do even more dancing if I can reschedule for something sooner!

Okay, I also used XpressPost but no signature, and it was tracked as delivered on Place d'Youville... not a big deal, right?

I feel kind of frantic and so want to skip out on work this morning but I'm pretty sure work is the only thing keeping me sane right now... I'm glad you guys are here for the support!

CanadaCanada Consulate confusion

I called DOS this morning and was told Packet 4 was logged in (it wasn't Friday) and that I am now eligible to schedule my appointment. It's been 10 days between them receiving my P3 and them issuing my P4.

Oh my word... thank you so much for the update. Can I just ask real quick if you used DHL and which address you sent it to? It'll be 2 weeks Thursday since Montreal received my P3 stuff...

Coconuts, the dates have been all over the place the last two weeks (it really is all I think about  ) - from April 1st to July 16 with something different nearly every day (April 24, May 4, May 23, June 22...)

Call NVC (maybe bookmark this page) and give them your WAC or EAC number on your NOA2. Ask them if they have a new case number for you, which they should.

Packet 3 should come first, requesting you to fill out a new set of paperwork (well, the Canadian fiance, right?), you send that back, and then they send you Packet 4 which gives you interview and medical information. Those of us filing with Montreal (and visiting VJ regularly) tend not to wait until we have the physical copies of Packet 3 or 4 in our mail - we send the paperwork/book the appointments as soon as the DoS tells us Montreal has sent them, because what's requested is public knowledge anyway and Montreal is slower than slow.

As you can see from my signature, I waited a month between the NVC sending my case to Montreal and Montreal sending me Packet 3 (I had to submit proof of status in Canada in between that because I'm not a citizen, I guess), and I'm calling the DoS every day asking if P4 has been sent yet but no word on that. So, Packet 3 could be on its way, or else soon, if you return the paperwork quickly, Packet 4 should come 2-4 weeks after that?

Hey John, Montreal is really not very helpful though email seems to be slightly more effective for communication than calling.

You might be better off calling the DoS (202 663 1225) and giving them your MTL case number to see if the consulate has done anything. What kind of visa are you trying to apply for? If it's an IR1/CR1, the NVC does do more processing and an interview is assigned to you. If it's a K1, your package should pass through NVC pretty quickly (less than a week) and you sign up for your own interview date after Packet 4 is sent to you.

Check out the Canada Regional forums - we've got a couple of Montreal specific threads that will give you a better idea of what we're facing with this consulate.

CanadaCan I cross the border without activating my K1?
Krikit, I thought I had heard about this before... I'm planning on going through the Peace Bridge with a friend next week (for wedding prep) and will go into secondary (try for a fresh I-94W) so I plan to ask them about their policy to clarify. Of course I don't want to get stuck in the States too early or even worse, get stuck OUTSIDE the States! It would be a disaster!!

Do you think there's much difference in CBP attitudes at each of the crossings?
iampatriciasFemaleCanada2011-03-27 23:39:00
CanadaCan I cross the border without activating my K1?
Little background: I'm a permanent resident in Canada and I get a new I-94W in my Dutch passport every couple of months since I cross the border pretty regularly. Since my most recent I-94W expires soon, I'm going to get a new one (valid for 90 days) before I have my K1 interview. After the interview, I will get my passport back with a K1 inside, and (hopefully) my old I-94W.

Now, my fiance is flying into Buffalo in May. I'd like to pick him up at the airport, come back to Canada, and finish packing my things, and then activate the K1 by crossing a few days later.

Is it possible to request the CBP allow entry based on one visa and not another? Has anyone succeeded in crossing the border with a K1 in their passports, but not activating it until a subsequent trip at a later time?
iampatriciasFemaleCanada2011-03-27 15:54:00
CanadaHow long can you hold off the interview...
That is the first one available, but there are probably 10 days available in April, and another 10 in July - you are free to rebook without penalty, so don't worry if you need more time. I think it only expires if you don't do anything after you get your NOA2 - if you send them your P3 paperwork, you'll get an automatic extension.

I followed Jeannie's advice and only sent the forms and the checklist and was allowed to get an interview.

CanadaDocumentation for DS-156K
Well, I didn't "forget" to attach the paperwork - I followed the advice of the Canadian members who have gone before me and filled out the checklist to say "these forms will accompany me to the interview". Really, the Consulate in Montreal doesn't mind if you don't include the "attachments" as long as you submit the application forms (all the ones that start with DS-XXX) and bring the rest of the documents to the interview.

Also, I didn't get Packet 3 until after I submitted my Packet 3 paperwork - I followed the advice of JeannieL, Coconuts, and Canadiana013 and submitted my stuff (without the official attachments) with XpressPost (tracked) to the place d'Youville address. It was only after I got Packet 3 that I found out about using DHL to submit my Packet 3 paperwork.

Anyway, I wouldn't say I'm one of the lucky ones - I called the DOS nearly every day in March and was on the interview appointment website every half hour looking for earlier available dates, and now it could all be for nothing if the US doesn't get their budget in place today and this government shutdown happens.
iampatriciasFemaleCanada2011-04-08 10:53:00
CanadaDocumentation for DS-156K
I attached none of the forms even though the DS156k says "please attach". Packet 4 was sent to me without my submitting any birth certificate, police check, I134 (with evidence), or further evidence of our relationship.

If it makes you feel better, attach copies, bring originals to the interview. It doesn't seem to matter to the consulate either way.

CanadaVancouver/Montreal
Definitely! Though Montreal did surprise me this month!

Since it's nearly impossible to contact anyone at Montreal, I would send an email/phone call/fax to Vancouver and let them know that initial paperwork suggested your petition was forwarded to Montreal, and you were offered both consulates for an interview so could they please confirm they have everything from the NVC in Vancouver (and also, that you live in AB!). Like you said, you don't want to end up at the interview without your petition, but it seems likely your stuff was moved to Vancouver when Montreal realized you weren't in their jurisdiction.

CanadaWaiting for Interview
Well, the last time I checked there were openings in the last week of July. Have you called the DoS to see if Packet 4 has been sent to you?

We're not sure why the appointment scheduling isn't offering any dates, but it's possible it could be related to the rumours of the government shut down from last week...? The service stopped 'working' on Wednesday, I think, which is when superiors were given instructions on how to proceed in case of a shut down and who could and could not come to work etc. etc. but now it looks like the politicians have shook hands on a budget deal, so Obama offered a 4 day extension on the old budget so that they could write the deal up and sign the paperwork for said deal on Thursday.

Possibly the service will be up and running again on Monday morning? We just have to wait (some more) at this point.

CanadaMontreal Processing Times
I made a poll a little while ago (I am also anxious about the wait time!) and I also can't believe how much the time varies! Please do let us know when your visa arrives! Apparently the DoS can tell you if your visa has been printed - if it has, it's hopefully on its way. If it hasn't, Montreal is having problems!
iampatriciasFemaleCanada2011-04-12 09:31:00
CanadaWaiting on Montreal

Your timeline is for a K-1 theirs is for a spousal visa, this is different and the wait times are longer due to the fact that Montreal is the only consul in Canada that processes spousal visas.

Oh yes... I did not take that into consideration...

I have all my originals and copies separated with plastic coated paperclips. Are paperclips allowed??? Just wondering because of the metal detector and security.
A friend of mine had her interview a few weeks ago. She took 1 expanding file folder and a binder, and a photo album and she was allowed in with all of it. They did keep her car key for her to pick up on the way out.

Oh dear... I didn't think of that... I am also using lots of paperclips and small binder clips... though I guess if they scan them, they'll see they're really just paperclips? Can they be used as weapons?

It sounds like they shook hands and agreed, but the official paperwork will take a few days to write out and sign - so Obama agreed to a few days' extension to make time for that. So, unless someone changes their mind over the weekend, the country's services will be offered as usual.

Well, the general vibe on the "government shutdown" threads is that interviews scheduled on days the consulate is 'closed' or whatever will get rescheduled (near the end of the line, no doubt) and interviews in the days after the government gets their act together should go ahead as scheduled with no interruption.

I'm not saying this is consulate procedure - only passing along the best guesses of other members, and by all means, let's keep hoping the US leaders can be grown up about this mess and come to an agreement without playing these games!

I agree - it shouldn't affect us (haven't we suffered enough??) but if this thing goes through, it probably will anyway. I'm so trying not to think about it, but during the last federal gov't shutdown, no new visas were issued, and consular services were put on hold :(
