Hello VJ members.  I would like to know how much evidence should I send in with my wife's n400 application. should we send in evidence dating back when she came to the united states or just send in evidence going back to one or two years. thank you for any replies.

 

Is she applying based on marriage to you (a US citizen)? Our situation may be different since she applied for a removal of conditions for her greencard in 2010, so we already sent in a lot of evidence for that process, so for the N-400 process, we just sent in updated materials (2010-2013).

 

We sent in as follows:

 

1. Copy of greencard

2. Copy of marriage certificate

3. Copy of US Citizen birth certificate

4. Copy of children's birth certificate

5. Copies of current Passports

6. Copy of apartment rent invoice/lease (current only)

7. Copy of IRS Tax Transcripts (2009-current)

8. Copy of life insurance policies (current)

9. Copy of WIll & Testaments

 

When went to the interview, we also printed out (had both our names on each):

 

1. Copy of bank account statements (2 from each year since 2010)

2. Copy of cable & electric utility statements (2 from each year since 2010)

3. Copy of credit card statements (2 from each year since 2010)

I am one of those people who had to rebook my interview date as I had planned and paid for a three week trip to Asia on non refundable ticket five months earlier, assuming everything would be done with USCIS by then.  Wrong.   lol    I sent a response explaining situation and got a new date 3 weeks after I get back.

Thanks Caro. Great data point. From your signature, it looks like your local office does everything much quicker. The NYC (Manhattan) office took 3.5 months after Biometrics to send us an interview date, so we assumed it would take a comparable period of time to reschedule an interview date.

  Best bet is to postpone the trip.  The oath should only be cancelled in a life or death matter.  A simple trip is not a good reason to postpone the oath as this could set your wife back for a long time as she would be re-entered in the system.  Many people have been delayed for a long time, others have even been lost in the system and have taken them a long time to get another oath.  

 

@Warlord, I'm in a similar situation to the OP and was curious if these cases of people postponing their interview/oath getting "delayed or lost in the system" are actually verified or just urban myths.

Thanks for the tip. I was actually trying to figure out what time to get there. My Interview is scheduled for 12:10 and as per your suggestion I will try to get there by quarter to 11 or 11 at the latest.

 

Quick question. Did you request a name change? is that why there was a long gap between the time that you passed your test and you took your oath.

 

I am getting married 10 days after my interview and then going away for a week. I dont want to have to reschedule my trip or my oath  ceremony so I just want to be better informed as to how I should schedule my trip.

 

Any insight would be  much appreciated!

 

After our Jan 29 interview, we had a trip to Hong Kong already booked for March 5-12 so we told the Interviewer that we wanted to have our Oath scheduled after March 13. He suggested that we might get the Oath scheduled in February, but the letter came March 15ish for an April 2nd Oath date. No promises are made, but hopefully they will accommodate pushing your Oath back.

Thanks MJC79!  Yes, we had the oath ceremony last week. Congrats on getting your interview date! Just note that sometimes the security line to enter can be pretty long. I'd get there 30-45 min early just in case. Good luck!!!!

I am still waiting to be scheduled for interview and I was placed in line on 11/18/13. (its been over 120 days) I tried to make an info-pass and i keep getting the message that there are no appointments available in the NYC office.

 

I was wondering if you ever tried to make an info pass at any point during your application process?

 

 

 

Thank you MJC79. It took about just under 4 months for us to get our interview date after being put in line for scheduling. We did not make an infopass at that point and just waited.

 

We only made an infopass when our interview date conflicted with travel we had already planned. We asked if we could move the interview date, but they told us that they would only put us back in line for scheduling (which could have been another 4+ months), so we cancelled our flights/trip to keep the original interview date.

We passed the Citizenship Test/Interview. For people who are in the NYC (Manhattan) Field Office, our appointment was at 2PM. We arrived early (since there are sometimes huge security/entrance lines) and waited. At 3:15PM, my wife was called in. I was invited to come in, but opted to wait outside for her. She was finished and came out around 3:50PM. We received our Approval/Recommendation document and said we'd likely have our Oath ceremony in the next 2-3 weeks, but that we should wait for our letter for exact details.

 

I had originally thought about postponing the Interview because we had travel plans, but after reading other people's accounts of having to wait another 1-3 months, we opted to just cancel the trip. We're hoping that we can get our oath done soon (or in late March) as we told the officer that we had international travel plans in early March, but we'll see what happens.

For those tracking my NYC (Manhattan) case as a proxy for your own, I finally have some progress to share from the USCIS Case Status website:

 

On February 24, 2014, we placed your application in the oath scheduling que [sic]. We will send a notice when the ceremony is scheduled. If you move prior to the scheduled ceremony, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.

 

Now it seems like I'll have to wait for them to actually schedule the oath ceremony.

I wasn't with the same office as you, but just to give you some perspective, my status was updated to the same as you on December 31st, I had my interview on Feb 6th and was sworn in on the 10th, and my status still says the same as on December 31st. Even though I don't care anymore, out of curiosity I still check every couple of days to see if they finally updated it tongue.png
What I'm trying to say is not to assume they always update the online status.

 

Thanks for the info, Shub. Unfortunately, we also haven't received the Oath date yet. Not a huge deal, but will just have to be patient I suppose.

Also, anyone with experience applying for a US Passport after their oath ceremony? How long did that take to receive it? We have an international trip coming up in early March.

Hi,guys.

I have a weird situation going on and  i was hoping i will get some kind of advise on it.

I have filed my n-400 in august,16th,have received my NOA relatively fast,as well as biometrics notice. 

On September 23d my case has been placed in line for the interview scheduling with a little note in the info box"If you have not received the notice within 90 days of the date above, please call customer service",well it just so happened that it's been over 90 days and there is no status change,i called  their office early in the morning and they said that they are sending the request to the immigration office,they gave me the confirmation number of the form that they filed, and according to what they say,i have to wait for another 30 days until i get some kind of information (not necessarily the interview notice),this is madness and  i don't know what's going on!

I'm upset,it has been over 4 months now since i filed my n-400 and there is no activity at all.

have any of you,guys,experienced anything similar?or maybe your friends?i don't know what to think since  i've read that naturalization procedure is relatively fast.

 

IcyStar - Do not worry. I was in a similar situation. My case was placed in line for interview Sept 5. Then 90 days later, nothing. Eventually they will get to you. I was a bit nervous myself, but on Dec 23 (108 days later), I checked my online status and it said we were scheduled. Still waiting on the letter with the actual Interview Date though. 

 

Depending on where your home field office is, they just may be super busy with a long list of applicants. The national center can't control the process at the local field offices. Sit tight.

Thanks. That's the "I do not have my Receipt #" prompt, correct?.  Unfortunately, it seems every option that would usually get to a person has been replaced with "Please call back between 8am-5pm Monday through Friday."  It's as if they turned on their "closed on the weekend" system even during the work week.

It's been over 90 days since I was notified that I'm "in line for interview scheduling." I tried calling the 800 number but it seems impossible to get a human on the phone, even using the standard tricks (trying to change your address). Any button you press, you only get the "call between 8AM-5PM Monday through Friday" even when you're calling during those times. Frustrating. 

 

Anyone else have any better luck/suggestions on how to get a hold of a human being?

Congrats to everyone getting interviews and approvals.  Seems like everyone around my same date is moving forward, but we're still waiting for our interview invite.  I'm hopeful we'll get our interview date soon, but I'm starting to worry that it might be scheduled while we're away on Christmas vacation. I was scheduled for Bio 9/10/13 and went today. They almost turned me away and was going to re-schedule. She then saw where I lived and felt pity on me for driving two hours. Since it was slow as well I guess, the manager let me in. Phew!

 

 

 

My wife went in to the Manhattan NYC center on Sept 3 (about a week earlier than her appointment). She arrived at around 2PM and they let her in w/o any questions. Best of all, there was no line at all. Pretty easy, though for N-400 filers, you need to show your greencard.

I want to say Happy New Year to everyone when it comes. Look at this... we are all going to be US Citizens in 2013! What a fantastic way to start the year!!! It signals the end of our immigration journey. It's been a long road for many of us but it's worth it in the end. :)

Here is the latest update on my case: on Friday, December 28th, I received an email from USCIS informing me that I've been placed in line for interview scheduling. I will update the list accordingly.

happy for your interviews!

I tried early bio with AOS and they didn't let me, so I'm not even considering it this time (the send me a letter yesterday for bio, we'll se how long to wait)


Where is your biometrics office located? I would try again to do the early walk-in. Tell them that you have to work or something so the scheduled date is a bit inconvenient. Try to go during a time when there is very little traffic... like say on a Tuesday or Wednesday in the early morning. The worse they can do is say no.

AusToUSCitizen I am fixing the format of your timeline to make it linear with the other timelines (I notice that your EB date was running off the page into another line). :thumbs:

Alex27 and Amino, I am updating your timeline with your interview date. I am not that surprised that you got scheduled so early for the interview. I have been doing some research in previous N-400 timelines and I notice that people from the Dallas, Texas area have their case processed pretty fast in general. How fast you are scheduled depends on the volume of applications your local field office has to process. It seems like the Dallas field office is not swamped with applications like other places. People in the New York City area for example are on the opposite end of that dynamic as the local field office always seem to have more than their fair share of applications to handle.

I did my Bio yesterday, Dec. 4th. I have done early bios for all my applications. My local ASC is very accommodating. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. There was no way I was gonna sit and wait for the actual date. I like to be one step ahead of the curve. B-)

I am updating my timeline with the early bio date. I will add the date to the side with the shorthand "EB". I notice that this is done in previous N-400 threads for those who completed their biometrics early. It provides a more accurate timeline to the public. :)

On November 29, USCIS emailed me saying they have mailed off my biometrics appointment letter. Today, December 3rd, I received the letter. It states that I have a biometrics appointment scheduled on 12/21/12 at 1:00 p.m. at my local Application Support Center. Following tradition, I will go in for an early bio after work tomorrow (I also did early bios for my AOS and ROC applications).

Also on my biometrics letter it states that my Priority date is: November 05, 2012 (which is the same as my case received date). I am gonna go ahead and update my NOA date from Nov. 7 to Nov. 5 as the latter is my correct Priority date. I am of the assumption that NOA and Priority date should be the same. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hello everyone,

I mailed off my N-400 package from NYC to the Dallas Lockbox facility on 10/28/12. I received confirmation of delivery from USPS on 11/04/12. On 11/07/12, I received an email from USCIS informing me that they have accepted my case and routed it to the National Benefits Center for processing. They also said I will be receiving my official Receipt Notice Form I-797 within 7-10 business days. On 11/08/12, they cashed my check.

So far everything seems smooth and efficient. :)

Congrats to everyone who completed the journey so far, you have made it over the mountaintop and now have full access to the promised land. To those of you still waiting, fret not; you are now on the homestretch and your victory draweth nigh.

On Tuesday April 16, 2013 my immigration journey was complete when I took the oath of allegiance and was sworn in as a citizen of the United States of America. Today (exactly one week later), I submitted my application for a US passport at my local post office. That's it for me. So long USCIS.

I wanna say thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. This forum is a gem. Best wishes to all. Now that I'm home, my next focus is to make the most of what life has to offer as a citizen of this great land.

Another update... I just got the following email from USCIS:

On March 7, 2013, we placed your application in the oath scheduling que. We will send a notice when the ceremony is scheduled. If you move prior to the scheduled ceremony, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.

Naturalization Applicants: you will receive your certificate at your oath ceremony. You can expect to be scheduled for an oath ceremony within 45 days of receiving your recommended approval. Many offices schedule approved applicants for the oath ceremony on the same day as the day of the interview. Please check the local office profile page on our website to determine if the office where you will be interviewed schedules same day oath ceremonies.

Hi all,
I had my interview today and it was a walk through. The lady told me to raise my hands and i took the oat. she then asked me to write down " The white house is in Washington DC". She then asked me a 6 questions

What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance?
Who did america go to war with in WW1?
What is an amendment?
What is the capital of your state?
Who vetos bills?
what is the supreme law of the land?

After these questions, she confirmed my names were correct and then told me i was recommended for approval. I asked her if i could get sworn in right away but she said no and told me to come back for my swearing in on the 27th. She also told me to wait in order to recieve my letter despite the fact that a copy would be mailed to me. I collected the letter after 30mins of waiting and left.
The lady had a cold and I captalized on that asking her how she was doing and hope she feels better. She did not ask me about my numerous trips back to canada neither did she ask me to provide any evidence. I bless the name of God..

How did your interview go? post some details if you can. Hope it went smoothly.

I'm still waiting for my interview letter, I've been placed in line for interview scheduling aver 6 weeks ago, I'm starting to worry a little, wondering why it's taking so long? :/


OMG Nyla, you know you ran across my mind recently and I said, I better go on VJ and give an update on my case as I know you and many others are probably waiting to hear. Low and behold, I logged in and I saw your post. Sorry for the delay with my posting. I've been caught up with some other things in my life.

I am pleased to announce that my interview on March 5th was as smooth as butter. It's the easiest interaction I've had with USCIS to date. My interview was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. but I took a cab from my house and got there a lot earlier than I had expected. When I went inside there was a number of people already waiting. I went up to the clerk at the reception desk and he took my appointment letter and then he instructed me to have a seat in the waiting area. I took out my cellphone and started doing random things on it because I was expecting to wait a while.

To my surprise, within about 10 minutes I heard a lady called my name. It was the immigration officer calling me for the interview. From the moment she said good morning to me I know it was going to be a pleasant experience. Something about her just made me feel comfortable. The best way I would describe her is friendly but professional. She made me take the oath to tell truth then proceeded with the interview. I had requested to change my name on the N-400 application so she asked me if I still wanted to go ahead with that and I said yes. I told her why I wanted to change my name and she was very understanding and supportive. She made me sign the papers to confirm it. Then she went right into the interview questions. She asked me about 4 or 5 questions on US history and Civics. I answered them quickly off the top of my head (I was well prepared) and she seemed impressed with that. She then asked the mandatory questions about my background such as: have I ever been arrested, used drugs and stuff like that. She then said congrats, you've been recommended for approval then she had me sign some remaining paperwork. She said she was satisfied with the interview and that she require no further paperwork from me as I had already sent enough evidence with my original application. Then she said my Oath letter should be arriving in the mail in the next 4-8 weeks.

That was it. The interview itself was less than 15 minutes. In fact when I stepped out of the office, some of the people who were sitting in the waiting area looked at me with surprise as if they couldn't believe I just came and got through already. The interview was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and I was out of the office by 10:45 a.m. on the dot.

Anyways hang in there Nyla. Your interview date is around the corner. They seem to process things faster some months than others. Once they say you are placed in line you are fine. It's just a matter of waiting for the interview date notice. In the mean time just keep yourself distracted with other things in your life to pass the time. That's what I did... that explains why you haven't seen me around here in the last couple weeks. In fact I was surprised how quick my interview date came up on me. It seemed so far away when I first got the notice. :)

I don't know, I can always tell when I am getting an important letter from USCIS. I just get that feeling before getting home and checking the mail.

I got my interview letter today, exactly one week after I received the email from USCIS notifying me that an interview has been scheduled. My interview is scheduled for March 05, at the USCIS field office in Holtsville, NY. I was a bit surprised as I didn't even know there was a field office out there in Suffolk County. My previous interview during the AOS process was at the field office in Garden City, in Nassau County. Hence I was either expecting that or the office in Manhattan. Apparently, the Holtsville location is a new field office opened in 2010. It is set up to serve people from Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties.
