US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 May 2014 Filers

I'm updating mine, KJMAZO and Gap1's. Hope I got them right.

Perfect, thank you! Sorry but I have one more update, biometrics letter received for 7/2.

So my husband and I are planning a quick weekend trip to Canada August 30th. There's no chance he's going to have an oath ceremony scheduled before then, right? Based on the timelines I've seen it takes at least three months start-to-finish, and we are only just at the biometrics phase.

I think we'll be ok to travel, as I know the only time he has to worry is if he's trying to leave the country after the oath, but before his passport, which he cannot do. As long as his oath isn't scheduled until after we get back I assume we'll be fine, right? I've read the other threads on this topic and it seems to be the case.

I come from Southern Ontario myself so I guess I am not used to the complete urbaness. I love big cities but the city is a little too crowded for me. I'm pretty much over it too. I still like going there though. It has a lot to offer.

oh! where from s. ontario are you? my fiancee lives in dresden.

nyc does have alot to offer, but i'm all about being mellow and settling down. and becoming a homeowner! for godsakes...with the amount of money ive spent on rent here i coudl've been a homeowner 5 times over. it makes you sick to think about!

QUOTE (jedinite @ Sep 16 2008, 02:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Your fiancee must show proof that he is returning to Canada. One of the biggest pieces of evidence is a job, since he can truthfully say, yes I intend on returning because work expects me back on this date. I can almost guarantee that the POE will ask where he works and what he does. If he lies and the POE decides it's a good day to follow up on it and your fiancee is lying it could hurt his coming to visit you in the future before he obtains his visa, and it may hurt his chances of getting your visa.

When I went to visit my wife a few weeks ago, it was the first time that I had returned to the US since I was denied admission in Nov 2007. When I traveled to the US I brought my proof of employment, several financial letters proofing where I lived. My proof of employment is my contract letter that states the duration of my job, and since the letter referred to my company and did not state me on there anywhere, I also brought proof of my incorporation with my name as the owner. I would recommend your fiancee just take vacation time and quit his job after he returns to Canada so you'll have proof of his employment. Good luck with that.

his job was only temporary and would end a couple weeks after he returned anyhow. that's the problem. he lives in a very tiny town on southern ontario and there is not much opportunity. but we do plan on doing this legally and i will have him bring the paperwork to show if all else fails and hope they take some pity on us. he has a letter from his dentist (he has to be back to get his wisdom teeth taken out) and a return ticket. so please wish us luck!

CanadaVisiting with an NoA1?
Hi everyone...
My fiancee is going to visit me on Saturday and this is the first time he'll be visiting since we got the NoA1. He is quitting his (temporary) job to come visit for 2 weeks and this is concerning to us.
What do we need to know and what should we expect from the folks at the border when he attempts to cross? Should he immediately show our paperwork and copy of the noa1 or only show if they ask? any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!

QUOTE (aravis227 @ Dec 1 2008, 01:12 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...but I think I know...it's basically the same reason that only two USCIS offices process K-1s. Only two consulates do K-1 interviews: Montreal and Vancouver. Your interview location is determined by where in Canada the beneficiary lives. Western-ish side=Vancouver, Eastern-ish side=Montreal. I hope I understood your question and answered it well. smile.gif

it was EXACTLY what i was asking- thank you!

i ask because it's going to cost us a lot for this trip (i am going too!) and since ottawa is the capital, it seems like the obvious choice for a consulate. i just wonder why there isn't a consulate in every province to make things easier smile.gif thanks for the quick answer!

Canadarefused entry or revoked application to enter?
QUOTE (Carlawarla @ Sep 2 2009, 07:37 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When you're filing out the forms for your interview, then put down that you were refused. If you sent the D-156 already, then just tell them at the interview if asked, that your fiance was turned away at the border as he didn't have sufficient ties to Canada (money) when visiting 8 years ago. I guess given the above OP, it appears it will be on their screen in Montreal. Just be honest when they ask you.

Infopass appointment? Gosh, you don't need that at all. Your application is now in NVC, or Montreal, and you're going to be getting an interview soon aren't you? An infopass appointment in NY isn't going to do you any good, and I don't know what you would say to them anyway? Just be prepared at your interview to explain that when your fiance was turned away at the border that you forgot, as it was 8 years ago, and you thought you'd just explain it at the interview as after he got more money he was admitted.

Didn't you already ask this in the Canada forum on your own thread? As well, another thread in another forum? blink.gif

oh dear. was i supposed to send the D-156 already? i thought i was just supposed to send the checklist, the online DS-160, and whatever form (was is the biography?) i'm leaving out because i'm going insane...

i've asked this question everywhere because i am scared to death that this might ruin our chances at approval and i want to get as many opinions as i can. and i'm totally OCD about this. literally. if i can't ask questions two or three times i feel like i'll be missing something.
sorry.

yeah im reading over and over that the DS-156K is still required

Montreal sent me a very old outdated DS-230. I printed off extra copies from the web and noticed the version difference (really only that they ask for my email address and rearrange the boxes a bit) .. so i sent in the newer version.

this forum is SO DARN AWESOME i can't even say.. and i only found it this past week! I'm relieved to see that so far i've done everything i need to properly. It seems relatively painless, except for the waiting and being apart. i know im preaching to the choir there..

as long as you send/sent what the checklist tells you to send (the DS-230 and the checklist), you're fine.. i'm still collecting documents from the checklist. birth certificate arrived today. yay!

this forum really is the best! biggrin.gif good luck to you!

QUOTE (Danu @ Jul 28 2009, 02:33 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The proof for the doctor will be the first page where they say they are pleased to inform you that the consulate can now begin processing your visa. The checklist and DS-230 need to be sent back, he will also need to do the DS-160 online, and take a copy of the DS-160 application and the confirmation page. The DS-156k is the declaration that everything you have said is true, it goes with the DS-160 and the DS-156, which even though they dont ask for in P3, they do ask for in P4 (silly montreal), he can download it online from the department of state website and fill it out so he has it ready for the interview. The evidence of engagement is just another letter of intent with a date closer to your interview saying you still want to marry him laughing.gif. For now though, all he has to do is check everything on the list (even if he doesnt have it all in hand yet, doesnt matter as the interviews are a few months behind) and send that with a DS-230 part 1 completed. Hope this helps biggrin.gif

that was incredibly helpful! thank you so much!

just to reiterate then. the only things that need to be sent RIGHT NOW are the online ds-160 (which we've already completed), the checklist, the ds-230

i'm just confused because in the only form we got (ds-156k) it asks for birth certificate, criminal record, evidence of engagement and affidavit of support. but all that comes at the interview? i just want to make certain every last thing is correct!
thanks again!

hello all...just a few questions for you about the forms in packet 3.

+as far as i know, my fiancee was given ds-156k.
it says it is to be used with for ds-156- which was NOT included in the packet.
does that sound right? where is ds-156?

+on ds-156k it asks for "evidence of engagement". what sort of evidence are they looking for? a signed statement? something else?

+it also asks for "evidence of support". do they want the affidavit of support? or something else?

+on the front of the checklist is the MTL number. the consulate has made it clear they they want the forms from packet 3 and the checklist immediately, but the doctor doing the medical exam also wants proof that they sent packet 3. will they take a photocopy?

thanks in advance, guys!

To the OP, my full experience with her can be found here. But don't even worry about her. Even if she's the one who ends up reviewing your forms before the interview, just be as polite and diplomatic as possible. When you are asked about the border incident, just be honest about what happened and about the fact that you forgot about it when you filled out the form.

your experience was very informative and interesting! thanks for writing all that out! thank GOD that crazy lady was not the one to interview you. it sounds like you got lucky with your interviewer smile.gif

Oh yes, the infamous dark curly haired tyrant at MTL. I'd heard about her many times here in the Canadian forums, then got the opportunity to witness her temper first hand when I was in the Montreal Consulate. She was putting a man with a heavy accent through the ringer for missing a document that he needed. She is um...different, but most likely you won't even have to meet her since there are a few windows (can't remember the exact number,) you can get called up to, which means your chances of having to deal with her are pretty small.
If no one else suggested it in your previous thread, I would recommend making an InfoPass appointment, and just explain what happened and see what they say. good.gif

i live in new york city...i'd like to think i can deal with angries pretty well, but you never know! so thanks for the info. and if i may bug you one more time- can you tell me what an "InfoPass appointment" is? i've never heard of this before.
thanks in advance!

Angry lady? I'm not really sure I've heard about her... But I supose anyone can be angry if you get them on a bad day! The woman interviewing us was actually quite pleasant. Rigid and serious but still rather pleasant. However the person who was intereviewed by her after us was saying how mean and judgemental she was... So it probably just depends on how hard you make her job that day? laughing.gif

believe me, after our screw up and hearing all this? i plan on being goddamned DELIGHTFUL! lol!

Canadainfamous "angry lady" at montreal?
can someone tell me about this woman. i'd like to know what my fiancee and i have to look forward to when we have our interview sad.gif

she was brought up when i asked this question:

"okay guys, here's the deal we may have inadvertently lied on our k-1 paperwork.

the very first time my fiancee visited me (this was like, over 8 years ago) he was sent back at the border because the ins felt he didn't bring enough paper money with him to be in new york for a week (eventhough he had his bank card with him and he was staying with me, therefore not needing a whole lot of money anyhow).
he went home, went to the bank, pulled more money out and came to visit a day later without further incident.
he's never been denied at the border again.

on our paperwork we put he was never denied entrance to the u.s. because, frankly, we pretty much forgot about it because it was nothing to us.
is this going to come back to bite us?
really. really. worried..."
