Canadawhat needs to be notarized?
for some reason searching for affidavit of support form took me to an old uscis form from 2006 that needed to be notarized.

the i-134 form i have is from 10.30.08 and does not require this extra step.

what to do, what to do?

And just to add, I'm extremely nervous about how our ages will be received at the interview, as both myself and my fiance are fairly young.

may i ask how old you both are?
my parents were 20 when they got married and were a much more mature 20 than i was, that's for sure!

I'm 20, and Ben's 23.

I certainly don't believe we're too young - I know many folks who got married at our age (excluding necessity). I just don't know how it will be perceived there and wanted to make it clear to our interviewer that we're handling this all as anyone would, regardless of age, with all bases prepared.

well you've been mature enough to handle all of this nonsense!

in nyc people don't get married until they're in their late 20's/30's. i was engaged when i was 23- thank christ that never took! i was absolutely unprepared for most types of responsibility!

Tax transcripts = overkill.

Won't stop me from bringing them, but they certainly aren't required.

so what, exactly IS required? i know i should know this, but i'm not bringing anything in the way of proof of income because i don't have any. just an affidavit of support filled out. but my parents...well i want them to supply us with like, everything and more. they're getting testy. :|
so what's required?
i think they've got a letter from my dad's employer and how much he makes and a statement from the bank? but i think that's the minimum and its making me reeeeeaaaaaalllll nervous.

I was just wondering, for CR 1 visa, everything was asked to be submitted through mail. I.e. Birth certs, marriage certs, Affidavit of Support, fees, criminal check etc. Wasn't that the case for K1 visas? Or do you have to take all that at the interview?

some copies of those things were mailed, but most everything else needs to be taken to the interview. which is why we're all freaking out!

Canadacomplicated POE

Haha. Hanging onto the paranoia to the bitter end, I see.

until well AFTER the bitter end, krikit. it's how i was created... :)

Yeah, just make sure your fiance is the first car and that the other cars are directly behind him.

I went over the border 2 weeks ago and we had 3 cars. I went in the building by myself, but honestly it was a breeze. Make sure to get there early so that your fiance doesn't spend an eternity inside.

The BG shouldn't think that his family is staying unless they indicate so.

what paperwork, besides the visa and birth certificate, will be needed at the poe, peachey? (thank you)
bogartnoirFemaleCanada2010-01-11 20:18:00
Canadacomplicated POE

Sounds pretty normal to me - so normal in fact I can't even use my imagination to come up with at possible bad border crossing scenario

(but i'm sure someone will!)

:D well that's a relief to hear!
i, myself, came up with a possible bad border crossing scenario though. if you will indulge me- the border guards think that all three of them won't be going back to canada and staying in nyc instead. i suppose his mum and friend will both have to show the requisite proof that they have jobs, homes, etc and will indeed be going back to ontario as soon as my dude is all settled in.

huh. guess i just answered my own question.
:|

carry on! (and thanks)

Canadacomplicated POE
my fiance is coming to the states (finally!) march 1st.
i'm afraid his POE is going to be complicated though, as his mother and his mother's friend are driving he and his stuff here to nyc.
his mom's friend owns the truck. i suppose they'll drive here and then leave a day or two later.
is there anything that might impede him from poe-ing in an easy manner since he will not be on his own and will have 2 people with him?
thanks in advance, guys!
bogartnoirFemaleCanada2010-01-11 14:29:00
CanadaIs this too much to ask?
eff this ess! i'd put my damn foot down and say guess what? this is the woman that gave birth to me and has supported me my entire life. we are all going to be family soon, so just deal with it. unless you want awkwardness and problems for the rest of your life- i'd get it together, lady.
ask her if her intention is to make things hard for her son. because that is exactly what she's doing.
if she persists- i'd stay far away from them for christmas and have a grand old time with your fiancee, mom and sister.

some people refuse to get things through their thick skulls and insist on being selfish. these people do not deserve to be negotiated with.

the very first thing to do once you get to the states?

Log in to netflix.com and sign up

While waiting for netflix, watch tv shows at hulu.com

honestly? he's probably more excited about these new prospects than anything else ;)

For NYC, all he needs is his passport to get married. You got get the license first and then you have to wait 24 hours to get married once the license is issued. You'll need at least 1 witness. I'd recommend going to the City Clerk's office downtown. It's really nice and efficient there! And the best part is you get the marriage certificate on the spot, so you can file AOS the next day if you want :)

Once he's been there for a couple of weeks, he should go apply for his SSN. He'll need his passport, K1, I-94 and I *think* long form birth certificate. Only certain social security offices in NYC can give out a SSN for the first time, so check out the website or call before you go.

For a Driver's License, once he has his SSN, he can get his DL. If he has an Ontario license, they'll do a swap, and you need to bring the SSN, passport, K1, I-94. The DL will have "Temporary Visitor" stipulation that is valid for the term of the I-94. Then, once he gets his EAD, he has to go back and get that stipulation extended. It honestly is more worthwhile to just wait until you get the EAD to get this done and use his Canadian license in the interim for ID. I only got it with the I-94 because I changed my name and had bank cards in my married name. The DL then has the temporary visitor thing on it for a 1 year period, instead of the 3 month period. Sounds confusing, but it's really not that bad.

If you need any help with places or where to go in NYC just PM me!

Also wanted to add, if you do go to the City Clerk's Office, your witness also needs to show photo ID and must be over 18.

gah! this is so much help! thank you so so much! he doesn't have a driver's license, but he does have an ontario i.d. card and his health card, so hopefully that will apply as well. i will definitely pm you in the near future before my head explodes ;p

thanks for your help, one and all!

Canadathe very first thing to do once you get to the states?
hello once again, my dears.
once again i am freaking out and could use some help.
g will be moving either the end of february or 1st of march. at work yesterday i was thinking about getting married at the justice of the peace and how we need a marriage license. obviously we will need some sort of i.d. for this, right? what will grant use as i.d.? his k-1?

i figures he needs a state i.d. and an ssn, right? but for ME to get a state i.d. (and i've lived here 11 years) i needed SIX points of identification! grant doesn't have that! what do we do about getting him some i.d.?

thanks again, folks!
