Still haven't gotten my NOA1. The check was cashed on Friday so I should get it today/tomorrow...I hope. I'm dying for that reference number.

This is frustrating. I thought the check clearing/NOA1 was the quickest part of the process. If even this is taking weeks that's not a good sign for the coming months.

Oh and a random question. How does everyone know their NOA status before getting the receipt number in the mail? Is there a way to check on the application before receiving the NOA1 hard copy?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK1 Work Visa Permit at Dulles
Pretty much all jobs here (including waiting tables) require a SSN. Under the table jobs are pretty difficult to find unless you know a business owner willing to break the law. A majority of illegal immigrants that get away with it have fake social security cards. I don't think you'd have much luck, not to mention it's quite a risk to take with a green card in the works.

I wouldn't see it as "sponging off your wife". If you can't work, you can't work. Part of being married is that you're a team and support each other when necessary. My fiance doesn't like the idea of me having to pay rent while he waits for work authorization either, but we're balancing it out by him paying for the majority of the visa fees now. It all evens out in the end. I'd rather be able to see him on a daily basis and pay a little extra (I'm already paying full rent and bills by myself now anyway) than wait even longer simply to save money.

I'd like to know this as well. I was told London was far quicker than the US. So far our US process seems slow, this is not good news.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresBank statement
Well I am the US citizen, he has the savings. My income is more than enough for the requirements, but I'm worried they'll look at my sad bank account balance (I have loads of debt and bills) to make their decision. I'm told they don't do a credit check or take debt into consideration, but I'm still worried nevertheless. The embassy he's going through is London.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresBank statement

If you direct deposit your paycheck or even if you deposit your check every payday, one of the things that the bank letter will show is the amount that you have deposited over the past year...Should be all of your paycheck minus the deductions. I was amazed at how much money I went through in a year.

Right, but isn't part of the bank statement letter your ending balance? Mine's going to say something like "Total deposited: $36,000 Total ending balance: $4.50". My concern is the balance, not the deposits. I'm afraid they'll look at my pathetic finances and deem me unworthy to support him.

And another thing. He has a lot of savings. I don't understand why that doesn't count for anything, not to mention his currency is worth more! I don't get why they only look at my finances when he can prove he has money as well.

This relates to a question I have as well. I make 43k (no dependents) and have had the same full-time job for 4 years. Do you think I need to provide bank statements as well? My bank account balance is usually pretty sad by the time my bills go through and I don't intend on including this on my form (if I don't have to) since I don't have much savings (especailly with a wedding, visa fees, Christmas and a transatlantic plane ticket coming up). My bank statements wouldn't help my case whatsoever.

Don't get too excited. NOA1's usually arrive right away. I was really happy as well, but since then I haven't had so much as a touch in over two months.

bummer :( me too, although you're about a month ahead of me so I'm definitely not expecting anything for awhile yet.

p.s. I read the latest post on your blog after you posted it in another thread. I laughed so hard, well said!

Haha aw thanks! If anyone else is bored and wants to read my fiance and I's frustrations during this fun process, the blog is called A Waiting Room and is located here: http://transatlantic...n.blogspot.com/

Yeah it's been just over two months for us with no updates. I realize it's not much compared to some others but it's still frustrating nevertheless. Us UK/US folks need to band together!

Hey at least you're at the VSC. You'll probably get through it a lot quicker than us.

Me too. It is true for some people. It all depends on the luck of the draw I guess. We're planning a wedding for April 30th next year in hopes he'll actually have his visa by late February.

I thought the K-1 expires 6 months after the POE? It wouldn't make sense for the K-1 expiration to be tied to the NOA1 as the NOA1 isn't an approval. Not even the NOA2 is an approval as there are still months of waiting involving the interviews and medical appointments and flights.

I'm just hoping no news is good news at this point. I know there's no logic to this, but I keep thinking we'd have received an RFE by now if one was necessary. At least that's what I keep telling myself to stay positive.

Yeah, we haven't been touched since the July 9th. From what I understand touched dates aren't always accurate. It seems some people have been approved without ever getting updated via web or phone and others are touched 2 days before receiving their NOA2's in the mail. You just may see it this week, here's hoping!

I wish they were more consistent.

They're on June 8th?! That's great news. I'm June 30th so I hope it isn't longer than a month or two before the NoA2. I've been reading on here that London is pretty quick after they receive the appropriate paperwork around the interview stage, is this true?

Thanks Amy, that makes me feel a lot better since your fiance is also from England. Does he usually just bring what I mentioned above? I wish I could just relax about him getting in but I won't until he is actually exiting the gate and walking towards me. The worst part will be waiting for him at arrivals not knowing.

I just got back from England in July myself, whereabouts is he from? Mine lives in Loughborough (outside Nottingham).

Amy you just beat me to it!

Yeah, that thread is really helpful. My fiance is trying his first visit to the States after we applied for the K-1 in a few weeks. He's just staying for about 9 days and is bringing loads of documentation (a copy of our K-1 application, our NoA1, a return ticket, a letter from his boss stating when he's expected back, and a few billing statements just in case).

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresRequest New NOA1
No, you're absolutely right. It was really stupid of me. I have trouble discerning when originals or copies are acceptable. I figured since he was traveling here he would need the original going through customs, and my only option was to mail it. I've never had anything lost in the mail to him before (and we mail a lot) so it just figures this one time something important was lost. I'm still hoping the bank holiday they had last week is what's delaying it and it will turn up in a day or two.

So we don't need the NOA1 for anything else? Will he be ok in customs visiting me with just a copy of our application (among other paperwork)or should I request a new NOA1? Can you request a new NOA1? All I have is a photo of it (not the entire form, just the bit with his name and receipt number) right now. I don't know what I was thinking not making a copy. I always make copies, I don't know why I didn't this time.

I know...and he's visiting in a few weeks!

Hopefully it's just delayed and it will arrive eventually. He's also bringing a copy of the entire I-129F application for immigration so we should be good without the NOA1 but I'd still rather have it.

there are a few types of debt that are 'legal offsets to income'.

is this one of those? or not?

(Sorry I tried to PM you but it says your box is full)

I'm not sure where you find the Legal Offsets to Income. I Googled it and found nothing....do you have a link?

The only issues I have are defaulted student loans.

gap1 - hey - work up some I-134s this weekend, see what #'s you come up with, compare yer #'s to the I-864-P document.

I have no idea how to "work up" those numbers...what do you mean (thanks for all of your help, by the way)? I make more than enough money (43k), but it's my terrible credit that I'm so worried about. I'm losing sleep over this and freaking out. He has a lot of savings in cash he can prove as well, but I guess that doesn't matter? My main concern is just being prepared for this in advance. I don't want any surprises come interview day. I just want him here as soon as humanly possible.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresConfused about affidavit of support
So basically, I will have no way to know if we'll need a co-sponsor until the day of the interview? That seems a bit scary to me. Should I have a co-sponsor's AOS ready just in case you think, and if they deny us we can have that form ready to go? I just don't want to find out a co-sponsor is needed at the last minute therefore delaying us months further.

Wait, seriously? I've said this before, I make more than enough money to qualify as a lone sponsor, but I have a lot of debt problems (I have defaulted student loans). Even though people keep telling me I should be fine I'm worried someone will see something on a computer somewhere about my terrible credit and deny me. Do they literally just look at my tax documents, pay stubs, and letter from my employer right at the interview and that's it or do they take this form ahead of time and run a check?
gap1FemaleUnited Kingdom2010-09-09 15:48:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresConfused about affidavit of support
Random question. If they decide you need a co-sponsor do they tell you this before the interview stage? Is this form required as part of the documents the beneficiary sends to the embassy BEFORE they schedule anything or do you have to wait until you're standing there on the last step to be denied due to finances?
gap1FemaleUnited Kingdom2010-09-09 15:20:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresTo Co-Sponsor or Not to Co-Sponsor?

I don't think it's a huge deal--they'd likely send you away and tell you they'll issue the visa when you get the proper sponsorship paperwork to them. Maybe a week or two, no guarantees. What's more of a time suck is gathering all that documentation from a joint sponsor at that point instead of beforehand. It takes a couple weeks to get tax transcripts after you order them, plus the rest, and then there's the time to get the package over there, and get it in, and then wait for your visa to be issued. And, you're relying on someone else to hurry up and gather documents--someone who doesn't have the same dedication to the cause that you do. If you think you'll feel better with a joint sponsor, get one now.

But again, doesn't appear that you need one. Forget about the loan stuff--you make well over the threshold.

Thanks so much. You mentioned ordering tax transcripts, I heard Turbo Tax pdf's paired with W2 forms are fine. Do I need a special transcript?

I think I'm just going to have a co-sponsor prepared just in the event that we are denied. Even though I may be fine it's better to be safe than sorry.
