well i put 0 for all forms of income, but i do have a bit of money squirreled away in my bank account. nothing terribly significant, but i don't want it to bite me in the ####- you know what i'm saying? like, could i get in trouble for having a couple of thousand in the bank and not disclosing that?

Canadamilk in bags
QUOTE (ashenflowers @ Oct 25 2009, 01:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
hah... it's funny this topic came up. I actually recorded an 'instructional video' last year... it's on youtube... for my non-Canadian friends who could NOT wrap their heads around the concept of milk in a bag. lol

I think milk in a jug or carton actually would have more contaminants near the openings than milk from the bag would. No one ever touches the snipped part. There's no folding or closing attempts, yet jug lids or the carton folding parts are constantly touched. ick.

I don't drink much milk (somewhat intolerant), so I don't actually buy the milk in a bag, but the absence of it will just be added to the list of things that make U.S. stores seem weird to me. lol

that sounds fun! are you shy about posting the link?

i put my milk cartons in the recycling bin, but i don't know if they do recycle them being that they are like, waxed cardboard. so the bags still trump the cartons in that respect.

Both the big bag and the smaller bags are recyclable.

I don't find them very easy to puncture, but I also never got sharp stuff near them.

I havnt had those things in my house for years, my parents went soy and I dont drink milk anymore.
I still think they're cool though.

recyclable is a huge plus. i assumed since they were plastic they probably wouldn't be so.
easy to puncture in the grocery store is really what i meant what with the stocking and sitting on a shelf with pointy-ish cartons...

i dated my fiance for SEVEN YEARS before i knew of this phenomenon.
it's not like me to go in and out of someone's fridge if i'm a guest (and lactose intolerant), so i was caught completely unaware.

i came across it (god knows what i was googling at the time) on a canadian site (i read some european countries have bagged milk as well) and was shocked. SHOCKED, I TELL YOU! or at least very bemused at the idea. i demanded to see this "bagged milk" the next time i was in canada and when he came walking in with the infamous pitcher and it was complete culture shock. i have traveled a bit and had never come across milk in bags.
it seems to me that they would be easy to puncture and therefore less desirable?
is this more common in some areas than others? what are the pro's of milk in bags?

Back when Jimmy Carter was president, there was an outbreak of swine flu in the US. Ol' Jimmy really pushed for everyone to get vaccinated. Problem was, thousands and thousands of people had severely adverse side effects, and became very ill and some dead. Ol' Jimmy really had egg on his face. Personally, I am not going to get the H1N1 shot, but will get a regular flu shot. Keep the immunity strong, and try to avoid hanging out with the pre-school and elementary school crowd. If I was a teach, then I would get the shot. Cheers.

I don't really have an option either way. I hate needles and I've never found the regular flu shot to be effective, so I wouldn't get it for myself, but if I had a child? That would be a much harder decision. I suppose people have been getting vaccinated for years with a lot of questionable additives put into the serum and we're all ok. I still only have 2 eyes!

Unfortunately its too late for my little sister! She is feeling much better now and will probably be back in school by the middle of the week. Apparently it is slowly spreading around her high school and at least a dozen kids now have it, and probably even more than have not been diagnosed or sent to see a doctor. The worst part of it, from what she has told me, is the high fevers. Apparently she wasn't able to sleep much through the weekend and kept waking up feeling like she was on fire. Fortunately she is a healthy girl and it doesn't seem to have hit her as hard as some other unfortunate kids.

i notice that quite a few of the links people post regarding the h1n1 flu shot are on the verge of conspiracy theory. there's healthy skepticism and then there's outright hysteria. and that doesn't help anyone.
ask your doctor questions. get the right information.
i follow a couple of science blogs. people in the field who know the right questions to ask and aren't about scaring people.
the ingredients in ANY vaccine are not attractive. but they work, and mostly without incident.

i got the regular flu vaccine. when everyone who is at a risk (and wishes to) gets their h1n1 vaccine and they have less of a shortage, i will probably get mine.
(my father is a scientist and a doctor and he is getting the h1n1 shot. he trusts his colleagues, and i trust him implicitly)

I am a "witch" as in I am pagan, so the people with green skin and warts does bother me sometimes too because its mocking my religion, but that said its also a holiday where people dress up in many different things to have fun. Its like me yelling at people who dress up for Oktoberfest in Leiderhosen...Germans don't wear that, but I also don't care enough to try to call people out in a thread where they are just having fun. I doubt anyone is ever going to stop dressing up as a witch, or as a mariachi band, or as a sumo wrestler, a geisha, a ninja or any other of the many many costumes that could potentially be labeled as racist. She appologized in advance because shes not intending it to be racist, not because she is intending but doing it anyway. She also NOWHERE in that post said she thought this is the way mexicans dress. Why you are arguing it with adults? Because its silly to get so worked up over one day when people wear a bunch of stupid awesome costumes that pretty much anyone could take as offensive, when all they are ment for is having a bit of fun.

Oh and I do know the difference between witches and mexicans, just so you know. Im just saying theres a lot of people who get stereotyped on Halloween that you wouldn't think of, but thats no reason to jump on people in a thread, just ignore it next time if you can't deal with it.

i am dealing with it and letting you know it's not alright. end of. nothing more to say. i've said my piece. i come from a family who were very involved in the chicano civil rights movement and i was told to stand up for my people because most of the time no one else will. and they were right.

Me thinks you need to lighten up a bit about halloween costumes which are just ment for fun. Not all french maids wear super short skirts, not all witches are green with pointy noises and warts, its just a costume for some fun, and I think its kind of cute that they are going out all dressed up like that. My friends and I did something similar once going as the 3 mousekatiers (I know i spelt that wrong) Had little capes, swords from the dollar store and mickey mouse ears on!

no i don't think i do need to lighten up. if i went out in blackface or gave myself yellow skin with squinty eyes- people would be outraged. or i HOPE people would be outraged. racist constructs have no place in this society now. let me give you a tip- if you apologize in advance that something might be racist, while laughing at the notion (as if it could never be construed as insulting)- you're ACKNOWLEDGING something is insulting and is wrong. if you doubt me, why don't we move this thread to the mexican regional discussion forum and see how they react.
i know this won't stop anyone from reconsidering their costume, but it should.
and if you can't tell the difference between witches and mousekateers and AN ETHNIC GROUP then some of the people on this thread are more clueless than i originally thought. halloween is no excuse to bring out racial stereotypes. why am i having to explain this to adult people? jesus christ...

The purpose of your trip will be to visit your fiance. If they ask for more information, then you can tell them about the interview... chances are that they won't really bother you though. I wouldn't volunteer any information that you don't have to.

Unfortunately no border gives the stamp anymore and to be honest, I can't really see an employer using that as proof of employment for the I-9...I'm pretty sure there is a specific list of things that would qualify someone and the EAD is our best/only option.

The EADs are done pretty fast these days (within 60 days give or take) so it shoudn't be too long before he can start working after you guys files for AOS.

so then we have to wait until AFTER we get married and file for AOS for him to be able to work? :\

The fact that you're going to visit your fiance specifically for an interview for them to move to the States to be with you seems like fairly good basis that you plan to return. If there is a stop at the border, I imagine telling to CBP would suffice, with a quick flash of your evidence if they so ask. But I can't imagine you'll be dragged off the train specifically for this. Not something I'd be concerned of.

The loophole that allowed K1s to work immediately following visa activation has been closed. Even if, by miracle of someone not having a clue about anything, your fiance does get a stamp (which I do recall reading about rather recently on the K1 forums, though I may be wrong), it's useless. They are unable to work until the EAD is produced.

I think you're set. We're all just extremely overly paranoid with not wanting to forget anything. good.gif

all very good to know. especially about the stamp. i THOUGHT i had been hearing about that and i'm glad to know it wasn't just a fever dream/ hallucination brought on by the stress of this process smile.gif

Good luck at the interview. You've been given the right information above. If the border guards ask the purpose of your visit just say you are accompanying your fiancee to his K-1 visa interview at the US Consulate. You'll have no problems.

thanks!

Canada3 qs: what to tell at border, which POE's give job stamps...
okay so last minute business:

do i tell them at the border that i'm going to my fiance's interview? i'm going by train and they just sort of pass through, but i'm worried they'll take me off the train and grill me. however then i can show them my beautiful and very organized binder wink.gif

secondofly, when my guy moves- are there certain POEs that give job stamps? to work? i've heard that? maybe i'm going insane. i suppose he'll be going through buffalo, so it would be nice if that is one of the places they do that.

thirdly, i had an important question that now i cannot remember because i did a double shift at work today and i'm exhausted. what should i be asking? any ideas?

fourthly, good luck to us all!
