CanadaK-1 people waiting for interviews at Montreal
QUOTE (Tina&Roland @ Sep 13 2009, 08:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi everyone,

I'm just trying to be prepared. For those who did their medical in Toronto, how long does it take to make an appointment and how long were you there? Also, do we need to have all of those vaccinations the Department of State lists on their website? I'm just asking because I don't even know where to look for those records.

Any help will be great!

Tina

i went with my fiancee to the medical. we showed up 20 minutes early and were first to be seen. in all it took maybe 2 hours to be seen and the entire medical to be done. we had the rest of the day to record shop! everyone was very pleasant and nice.

Canadadual canadian citizenship for my husband and i
hi folks! long time, no see. my husband and are are about to celebrate our 2 year anniversary (obtaining a visa eventually does happen!!!). with the expiration of his green card looming, we were wondering if it would be possible for us to receive dual citizenship.
he is canadian through and through and i know he will become naturalized to stay with me, but it sort of breaks my heart for him to give up such a big part of his identity.

my father is his sponsor and although he is very fond of my husband, he would like his legal obligation to end when it can. so we are looking into different options. the ideal would be that we would get dual citizenship. but how difficult is that to get?

any help is appreciated!
thanks!

CanadaWhat Are You Reading?
ooh just thought of another great book that has a good design!
"another bullshit night in suck city" by nick flynn

it's a memoir (but i don't believe ANY memoir/autobiography is really entirely non-fiction- but i don't mind). very well written, sort of experimental.
Flynn's wayward father, a self-styled writer and ex-con, describes his life on Boston's streets as "another bullshit night in Suck City": he hangs out in ATM lobbies, stuffs his coat with newspaper and is often "still drunk from the night before." This biting memoir describes the years poet Flynn (Some Ether; Blind Huber) spent, in his late 20s, working at one of the city's homeless shelters, where his path crisscrossed with his down-and-out father's.

CanadaWhat Are You Reading?
QUOTE (eyoa @ Apr 4 2009, 04:11 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
All-time favourites: I cannot pick one. Here is a short-list:

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Who didn't read this in high-school? Holden Caulfield remains as one of my favourite literary protagonists.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
Compelling story woven through the history of a family to uncover the cause of narrator's hermaphroditic affliction.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Classic tale of love between mortal and devil.
The Stranger by Albert Camus
Existential philosophy in prose-form - A funeral, a murder, and death row.
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
What happens when a class of 42 ninth-graders are forced to kill each other or be killed by a totalitarian government program? This is.
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
Sweeping work involving a seemingly mundane man, who in the process of looking for his lost cat comes across a myriad of curious characters including a sixteen year-old neighbour girl, a war veteran, an insane politician, and a psychic prostitute.

i LOVE all the books you've put here, too!!! i second every single one of these!

CanadaWhat Are You Reading?
re-reading roald dahl's "tales of the unexpected". very dark and cheeky. if you like short stories- you should try this one.

also reading "sharp teeth" by toby barlow. i have to be honest and say i bought the book because of the very well designed book cover. i do that a lot*. but the book is interesting. a challenging read.

*last time i bought a book purely on the cover ended up being the REALLY enjoyable "the yiddish policeman's union" by michael chabon

School i've already had set for a while....I will be looking into those places and will see once we get there will be able to make a better choice.

CanadaMoving to NY

Amanda2020-Oh, you meant NYC... .....Sorry..thought you meant NY State...Well that narrows down things then...;)
Sapphire (and anyone else in NYC) can help you more out there about NYC-specific information, as they are more familiar with such...
I agree..Saphire...NY is a big state, indeed! Need to marrow things down...
Lol..I can though help with NY State info...So feel free to ask about that too....
By the way...If you are moving from Ont to NYS...It's a direct no-testing driver's license transfer...no need to take any driving tests....
Good luck with your move to NYC/NYS!

Yea we were looking into Brooklyin my step dad's sister lives there and she owns an in home day care which she can take my little one as of Sept...and no I dont have school age kids I have a 10 month old. Yea I am looking forward to it I am from (Oakville) so were not far from each other its like a bubble here so it will be a change coming out lol. In terms of our buget were pretty flexible and set of what were looking at...Were looking into two bedroom for sure preferably three cause we need a guest room, we got family that will visit alot and my fiance brother is also a frequent US travller and often works there as well both my fiance and his brother are in the entertainment business.

As I mentioned above were not looking to be far from Mannhatten I did not know Riverhead and South Hampton was that far so its out of the picture. My fiance will be working at the Rockeffeler Center and will both be attending NYU so Mannhatten will be our daily route. Any places that we should look specifically in Brooklyn?
Amanda2020FemaleCanada2010-02-23 17:01:00
CanadaMoving to NY
Will be moving near Mannhatten my fiance's job is there.....so far I looked into Forest Hills. Brooklyn....I am going to look into Riverhead, South Hampton Village...we want something within a reasonable price although we found that NY is pretty expensive i was surprised....so far I looked at both rent and own...originally we were to go into rent but if buying is cheaper than will go that route our budget is anywhere up to 200 000...were looking into more condo/house type complex. My fiance also will be attending NYU on campus and myself I am applying so will need to be within distance to get there. And yes we have a car which will be bringing over.

CanadaBought a townhouse in NYC
Hey Guys

Currently in NYC till tomorrow....looking for a place for Sept some may remember my last post about moving to NY due to my fiances job transfer in the fall. We been here since Saturday we looked at a lot of places some we liked some we didnt My step aunt who lives here in Cobble Hill helped us out, were going to be taking over my aunts sister in law and her families townhouse there relocating to another state, rather than having to put it up for sale which they've only had a few oeffers were going to buy it ourselves it is significally cheaper than most prices around here which is surprisngly very expensive. Its a nice famuly friendly neughbourhood and good connections with the subway into Manhatten. Its a relief knowing we got something so quick. We are going to meet with a mortgage specialist today. There moving in August so will have the place ready for when we do in Sept.

CanadaHealth Insurance for Kids
Hmm that sucks about the insurance my daugther is a duel citizen and she receives insurance through my fiance and I as well through common law. My fiance's insurance is through ACTRA which his covered both in Canada and US he is also a duel its a bit different cause he protected by the union, he was able to add our daughter cause she is a duel....I am not sure however if the 3 month limit applies as with us at the time we used it we stayed in Florida for 4 months so it would have kicked in.

Hello

Wanted to ask everyone who went through the marriage on a K1 how long it took you to change your name? in terms of the processes in US and then in Canada. I am POE on Aug 7th and getting married on the 14th. It just dawned on me I will be surpassing the name change processes soon, is it long? any details will be great.

CanadaQuestion regarding Importing cars to NYC
Hello
I am getting ready for my POE tomorrow. We will be importing two cars into the US at the end of the month. We have obtained all the requirements and letters etc needed for the import and both cars meet NFTA requirements. However we have a sticky situation, I am POE tomorrow into Florida and getting married next Saturday, we got our stuff there which were moving into NYC will be our new home. Our plan was to have the cars brought up to us by family as it will only be a seven hour drive from outside Toronto. To import the cars will it have to be me and fiance doing so, or can someone else as long as they have our paperwork?

CanadaADVICE NEEDED ASAP!!
To go about it you will need to fill oit am application for counsular report of birth abroad, http://vancouver.usc...dfs/DS-2029.pdf is the form you need to obtain and fill out. Instruction is on the second page, however yes this is for under 18, we filled out this form for my daughter's birth cause she was born here to my US fiance so she now obtained dual. Here is the information for over 18 http://vancouver.usc...rivative_claims you will need to go straight for passport.
Amanda2020FemaleCanada2010-08-06 11:58:00
CanadaADVICE NEEDED ASAP!!
I think you still can but you so on your own now...that just states under 18 the parents have too declare it, since the child cannot on their own. I would contact the embasy to ask about that according to US immigration laws, a person born to US parents outside of US never loses their citizenship.
Amanda2020FemaleCanada2010-08-06 11:50:00
CanadaPOE at Toronto Pearson
I just POE yesterday and it went well.....very reliable and friendly officers which I had. Only downside is the wait. I went through check in at 12 30 but did not get into secondary till 2 30 they called me in. They asked a few questions and about what I am bringing into US they didnt search my bags though just my handbag with my daughters stuff. Yes having the written list is helpful we had one and gave it to the officer he said we made his job much easier. Other than that nottin to fret, just make sure you got your package to hand in. Once you get your I-94 make sure they make it for 90 days and explain it to you. We found ours very helpful he even went into the details of what would happen if I lost it. Good Luck....coming live from Florida.

CanadaHow did you meet?
Amazing to read these stories, and how differently each one of us meet our love one. As for myself I grew up with my fiance. He is a dual and moved to Canada when he was 7 and raised here till he was 19 than he moved to US on his own after high school. We've been friends since nineth grade but did not start dating till 2006, which itself was not expected or imagined we'd end up together. Throughout the years his gone back and forth from US to Canada. I myself visited him every few months, than in 2008 I found out I was pregnant and had our first born in April 2009. Since we stopped seperating as we both decided its best to stay together so she had both parents. We started the visa process in Sept 2009. I stayed with him from Aug 2009- Nov 2009 in Florida where he last resided and went to school. Upon return to Canada for the holidays, we were to return to Florida but than realized if I were too I would not be allowed back in and risk not being approved for my visa, so than he decided to stay back in Canada during the processs so we been here since. He now trasnferred to NYU for school since January did his winter term through online. He now got a job which he will be transferring to NYC so our permanant move will be to NYC. I myself will be starting school at NYU in the fall.I am POE tomorrow going to Florida and getting married there next Saturday, than we will be shipping all our stuff to NYC end of August than moving.

CanadaAOS Question
Hello

I am just starting to fill out my paperwork for the AOS package. I got a question about the I693? we have to find a civil surgeon to fill it out but does that mean I bring my info there to fill out or do I need another examination?
Amanda2020FemaleCanada2010-09-11 16:13:00
CanadaHow did you assemble you AOS package?
Yes I put mine together with dividers and organized it based on each form. I like organization and find it easier to read and just get through it. I also type up all my paperwork on the computer. I just submitted mine last week.
