Thanks -- I hope I get it soon. I applied for it last week. The PS one, I mean. Once I get that, I'll apply for the RPO one. They said it'll take a month but someone said they can expedite it in 10-15 days. So let's see.

Hey guys, I am about to get my PCC done from Calcutta, India. Any idea how long it takes -- I need one from the RPO and one from the PS as I understand. I want to know how long it'll take to get it done so I know which one to pursue first since both will require my original passport.

I'm a Bengali too so I don't know about the Karva Chaut rules. And I wouldn't take part in it unless there was a similar festival requiring husband's to fast for their wife's health and prosperity. Hey, I'm all for equality.

I suppose it's a blessing that you don't have to worry about the cost of the Adjustment of Status procedure. But I believe it's now only a matter of weeks between K3 and IR/CR1. If it were me, I wouldn't want to deal with the USCIS AGAIN. Once, is enough. But if K3 works for you, then go for it!

Haha. Sorry. It was just funny. But I feel for you.

Class 10 pass certificate is your school board examinations pass certificate or admit card. It usually has your date of birth. My school leaving certificate from class 12 has my parents name in it as well. So maybe something like that would work.

In other issues: What is the current waiting time for an interview in Mumbai from case complete at NVC?

Original PCCs. I'd add a regular photocopy as well. Just in case.

Certified copies, from what I understand, is a certificate that is authorized by the SAME ISSUING AGENCY. Thus, making it different from a notarized copy. So, say I got my birth certificate from the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. I would need to go to them and have them issue a certified copy against the original. Kind of like a duplicate original. An oxymoron if there was was one.

Well, the consensus seems to be that every second week of the month is the interview-scheduling week at NVC for the next month. However, this does NOT mean that there are absolutely no interviews scheduled during other weeks of the month. So good luck!

Maybe you can just send the package in with the district PCC and add a letter saying that the passport PCC will be made available at the interview? Is that possible?

I applied for the local PCC from Calcutta. They just wanted passport size pictures, a form, an application cover letter and Rs. 300 or thereabouts. A copy of my passport, a copy of my school leaving certificate and a copy of my birth certificate. I stated it was for immigration purposes but they didn't ask for any interview letter or NOA2 copy. Not yet, at least. They accepted it about a week ago.

Just for someone's future reference: If you need a local PCC go to Bhavani Bhavan near New Alipore. There you will need to present an application letter and they will give you a form to fill out.

Thanks for replying! That's rubbish that VFS needs everything that was submitted to the NVC. So basically, all I take to the embassy (when my time comes, that is) evidence of relationship or do I need MORE copies of everything?

Just to be clear: Does VFS take all the documents and send it to the embassy? Or do they just make sure that we have everything?

How many copies of the I864/DS230's should I keep?

I'm from Calcutta and will be interviewing at Mumbai. Do I go to the Mumbai VFS or the Calcutta one? I'm confused.

Doubtful. From what I understand, you may get an antibody titer test done and get the required vaccinations from your personal physician. But you have to show up on the designated day for your medical and if required they will give you more shots or just the plain physical/HIV/sputum test.
sachinkyFemaleIndia11/10/2009 17:04

Says physical on the site, as well as chest x-rays. Nothing about anaethesia. I assume you can have a titre test done earlier too and just show it them so that they can ascertain what vaccinations are required.

My husband-then-boyfriend and I used to practice during the summer in the empty parking lots up on campus hill. He took himself very seriously as a driving instructor and would yell instructions and I would just flippin' out behind the wheel. It wasn't so bad though and I could drive down to the gym and the swimming pool at 20mph. I got really nervous as the cops drove by but I was good at stopping and signalling a turn. However, I never stepped off-campus. So I guess this is something I'll have to do once I do get back there. Learn the rules of the road.

Asia: SouthPOE's from India
Umm, you could take the Greyhound if you absolutely hate driving. But if he has a lot of bags that'd be painful.

No, he will not need a visa for Germany. Those are layovers, you just wait in transit.

I was gonna say you need to ask him to man up. But if he's never flown before, that could be kind of scary. So try and assure him that POE's usually aren't a big deal. And it's not like you can meet him at immigrations and customs, any way. No matter what you will have to wait outside the arrival gate. JFK is a busy airport but they go through the passengers quickly. I've been through it countless times.

Asia: SouthPOE's from India
Well, I don't know if this will work for you but maybe you guys can stay the night over at the Mariott by JFK. Or is it Newark? It was $95 for a king size double bedroom the last time I stayed there. Drive to NYC. Pick him up from the airport. Order room service and enjoy yourselves at the hotel! Sleep in. And then you can drive back together the next day.

I'm also trying to chart out my flight plan. I need to get from Calcutta to South Bend, Michigan. So that's either Chicago or Detroit. Doubt there's a non-stop flight to either of those.

Asia: SouthPOE's from India
POE is the first stop within the U.S. He will clear immigration there and then take a connecting flight if needed. Most people on the East Coast fly into JFK/EWR. Make sure to have some time b/w the connections so that even if there is a delay at immigration, he will not miss his connecting flight.

Good luck!

P.S. Air India just started a Delhi-Washington flight, if that works for you.

These depends on what the flights are. My husband (then fiance) flew Air India from JFK to Calcutta via Delhi. He was therefore cleared for immigration in Calcutta since Delhi was only a technical stopover.

However, when I flew from JFK on Jet, I had to clear customs and immigration in Mumbai b/c that was the flight path. I had a domestic connection to Calcutta. Work it out in this way.

Thanks you, guys. You've been very helpful with your advice and certainly helped put my mind at ease. I don't know what I'd do without VJ.

No, Trinket, it wasn't because of you that I asked this question. I was asking a different question about whether my cousin's wife would have to sign a I864A even though he makes sufficient income. That's when somebody mentioned that it might look a bit odd that he's my relative instead of my husband. Logically, I know it's not a big deal but I'm close to panic-mode on everything right now. But it's good to know that you had a similar case. Maybe you can point me out to interview review/questions? I'm reading up on everything because I don't believe you can be too prepared for something that will determine the course of your life. But I do appreciate your point about not applying every case to my situation. I tend to do that a lot and consequently flip out quite a bit. Honestly, I couldn't care less about being in an interracial marriage, I love this man and I would've married him if he was white, black, brown, yellow or green for that matter. And my parents only care about my happiness, they just want me to be happy. And they know how happy he makes me. And I'll be glad to explain this any CO.

Rohini, I don't think it'll be an issue.

Guys, I need your expert opinion on this.

I will be interviewing at Mumbai.

My husband and I both graduated college in May so he's currently not making enough income to sponsor me. So we asked my cousin who is a naturalized USC to joint sponsor and he agreed. My question is: is that going to be a problem? That he is my relative instead of my husband's. I didn't even think it'd be an issue till someone mentioned something in the CR1 boards. We'd have gone with his parents but my father-in-law is between jobs at the moment, and I understand that the joint sponsor must be employed. So we went with my cousin.

What do you think? Is this going to cause issues?

There's something in there about not using your house if that's your primary residence. They are looking at assets that can be converted into liquid cash at a short notice. Plus, with the housing market tanking, prices of home properties have declined. And the thinking behind is quite reasonable -- I mean you aren't going to be able to sell your house off at a moment's notice to prevent your SO from becoming a burden on the state.

From what I understand, there must be $56,000 in a bank account in the USC's name for it to work. Simple enough if you got the cash.

Find a co-sponsor ASAP and send them the documents they want. Good luck.

What other questions was he asked, if you don't mind sharing? This was in Mumbai, right?

Hi,

For those who have interviewed at the Mumbai embassy -- what kind of files/folders are allowed inside the embassy? Since we're going to have a TON of documents, I was trying to figure out the best way to organize all that stuff and make sure it is readily accessible.

Any tips/suggestions?

I'm not sure about this either. I jumped the gun and got my PCCs done in end-October. I was hoping for a quick NOA2--oh well. Hopefully, they won't expire before I send them to the NVC. This is what I understand: when the PCC is sent to the NVC, it must still be valid. But for embassy purposes, it is considered to be valid for 1 year. So say you send the PCC to NVC 4 months after you get it, but by the time it gets to the consulate in India, it might cross 6 months. The embassy still considers it valid for a year then.

Have you called the embassy and asked to ensure that your petition doesn't expire?

Logic tells me that since you already have your interview date, it should be okay.

Okay, thanks for that. My passport was issued in 2002 and is valid till 2017. I got married two months ago, so I'm assuming it'll be fine.

I know, right? Man, it made me so mad when I read about Gujarati women on this forum somewhere. That is way out of line and I have no idea how they are getting away with directly contradicting a Supreme Court directive. Absolutely rubbish. If only they'd tried to do that here in Calcutta. I would have given them a right piece of my mind.

Hello,

I recently got married in India and filed for IR/CR-1.

I have a question: I don't plan to take my husband's last name so I am retaining my maiden name. I also didn't apply for addition of spouse's name to the biographic page since I wasn't sure how long they would take and I wanted to get started on the paperwork ASAP. Is this going to be a problem anywhere?

Any thoughts? Thanks!
