Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMoscow June 2008 Interviews
QUOTE (Chris & Olya @ Jun 1 2008, 10:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My fiance had her interview on May 28th. While I do not have the exact details I believe that she had a fairly positive experience. My advice is to ensure you have plenty of documentation in regards to your affidavit of support and proof of your ongoing relationship. Finally she should relax and feel confident.
While i am sure that there are some rejections it seems that almost everyone That I have have met on this site has passed there interviews. The worst case scenario was that the visa was delayed in a few instances but eventually granted.
We had our interview on Wednesday and had our visa in hand by Saturday. She waited in Moscow with her son for her Visa. It was faster than I expected. She should arrive with her son this Friday. Good luck to all of you June interviewees ! May you be reunited soon !

I hope Chris you can post a feedback on Olya's Interview now it it tuesday 9am in US. Hopefully everything went well!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMoscow June 2008 Interviews
Hi Everyone I'm just looking to get a count of how many fellow members are scheduled to have an interview this month in Moscow!

My finance has her interview scheduled for the 19th of this month! She is a bit on edge... and a bit pessimistic that she will receive the visa and will be with me in a month.

She hears a he/she say of people not passing the interview.... and so on. I tell her judging from VJ community not 1 person has been rejected for Russia!

I won't be with her there since they won't let me in, but rather waiting in states for her. But told her no matter what she will be here with me even if it takes me to come with her to the second interview! good.gif

So what you guys think? Any last advices?
How about those in the same situations as me? Are you ready for the task at hand? Any preparation queues?

Good Luck to all of us!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMy fiance Veronika got approval
Interview was easy! Only a few questions were asked. Who we met? When I list visited my fiance. The whole interview took only 3 minutes. No photos, emails, phone calls were even looked even though we had plenty.

Excellent experience!

Just have a few quick questions. I plan for her to arrive to EWR airport (Newark, NJ). Can anyone share a good/bad experience with that airport?
Do they issue the work authorization stamps at the border?

Thanks in advance,
Igor.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusBest Value Way to Call Russia?
I'm surprised noone has mentioned this:
I call thru www.voipstunt.com PC to phone or phone to phone.

You put $15.00 on the account and you receive 300 minutes of free calls a week to Russia.
If you don't use your balance of 15.00 you can call russia for the next 120 days every week for 300 minutes charge free. (Every week you receive 300 free minutes)
If you use phone to phone there is 0.05c fee for connection and no per minute charge.

Can anyone beat that plan?

Europe & Eurasia (except the UK and Russia)Can someone help me translate an English letter into Spanish please?
Hello Emma25,
I hope this works out for you, To be honest I'm not a Translator of any sorts
but I've been speaking the Spanish language for 37 years and English for about 32 of them.
Good luck, in your new journey!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMaps US Embassy Moscow
Someone asked about the location of the US Embassy in Moscow so thought I would resurrect these threads.

And another revision to the map! This adds the three medical clinics. Since everything is located in the Northwest quadrant I made a smaller version that can be printed as an enlargement on the same size paper (8.5 x 11 inches). This is easier to read.

us_emb.gif full size (798 KB)

us_emb_sm.gif NW Quadrant enlarged (284 KB)

Enjoy! I hope you or your girls find it useful.

Hi All, I've been playing with Google Earth and it is awesome!!!

I have created the same sort of map that I uploaded before but this one uses Google Earth and is much better for locating the offices in Moscow (Embassy, DHL, Medical clinics, etc.).

You will need to download and install Google Earth before you can use the file I created but it is worth the effort.

After you have installed Google Earth just download this file [Moscow.kmz] and either open with or save to disk and double click to open the file in Google Earth.

I put some extras on the map (Airports, landmarks, etc...).

Enjoy!

Russia, Ukraine and Belarusother Russian food
These things are really just "Custom & Practice" of different cultures and have nothing to do with cleanliness. It sometimes bothers me to have to remove my shoes every time I enter someone’s home. This really has nothing to do with being hygienic or clean. I can see if I have muddy or wet shoes, then yes I would remove them but just from walking outside, that is silly. This is a cultural difference that is not widely practiced in the USA. I do remove my shoes in the evening but that is more for comfort than for keeping my floor clean! Sweaty feet, I'm sure, have much more bacteria growth than the soles of my shoes. :P I have noticed that the streets in Russia do tend to be dirtier (soil & rocks etc.) than those I see here in the US.

As far as personal hygiene, daily bathing is a fairly modern creation promoted by the plumbing industry (bathtub manufacturers) and the soap companies so they can make more money! If you bathe every day you use more soap!

There are much more serious germs out there than those we might carry on our shoes, clothing, or in our mouth's for that matter (what about French kissing!). For an idea of what to really worry about and a good reason to wash your hands often (especially before and after preparing raw foods) see the Bad Bug Book. A little dirt won’t hurt you but some of these bugs certainly will (if you survive them!). :o

Cheers! :D

They are only held at the embassy in Moscow, I wish they had the interviews in Ekaterinburg since that is where my fiancee lives. :( Moscow is a long way from Ekaterinburg!

Isn't it like 7 hours away by plain? That's just insane

No... Ekaterinburg is not that far... 888 mi (1,429 km) Flight Duration: 2hr 25mn.

I've been to Khabarovsk in the far east... Now that's far!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusPossible Harassment During Medical Exam (link)
This place IOM (MOM) does not conduct the medical exam. The girls are sent about 4 blocks away to a Hospital and this is where the exam is done. I'm not familiar with the other clinics but when I was there last fall we used IOM and this was the case.

I'm not saying that this might not be harassment or abuse and I'm not trying to defend them but they are looking for things other than just TB/HIV. The way I understand it is that it is a general medical assesment (physical) and I know that when I go to my doctor for a physical they usually ask you to strip and put a gown on.

Just beings the  's advocate... :D

I've been to Egypt (Hurghada) on the Red Sea... very nice resorts there and beautiful water especialy if you like to dive. No advance visa needed. Upon entry you simply buy a couple stamps, paste them into your passport and then go through passport control. No trouble for you USC or your Russian Gal. Many flights and packages from Moscow every day.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusInternational Banking

My fiancee and I are working on all of our paperwork and such to bring her over to the USA. I want her to have access to funds if she needs it and was wondering if anyone was familar with international banking and could suggest a bank that is easily accessed from both the US and Russia.

My goal is to find a bank that will issue us both ATM cards so I can deposit monies here and she can withdrawl them their.

Please don't lecture me on scammers and such we are way beyond that, if you are going to post any messages about being careful and such please dont bother.

thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Paul

I've done this for some time... Best way to send money...

Doesn't even need to be a branch over there... ATM now works almost everywhere...

Just get 2 ATM (Bankomat) cards... send her one, then give her the pin over the phone. Simple... maybe costs $1.50 for her to withdrawl any amount from any ATM. Beats the hell out of WU!

Then leave the card with Mom so she can get cash after you two are together and she wants to send money home.

Cheers

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusRe-visiting Russia
The trick is to get registered for the whole duration of your stay... I've done this and not had any trouble, even when traveling and staying at various locations (different cities). I once tried to register again at another location and they looked at my current registration and told me it was unnecessary to register again.

For my future visits I'm getting a one year, multi entry, business visa. I have heard that this is the easiest type of visa to register and they like it because it's the most expensive  but I've been told that with this type of visa you may register it at any place you like... Hotel, OVIR, service agent, etc... With 3 trips over the next year this visa will actually save me money over multiple tourist visa's.

In the past I have been turned away from OVIR with a tourist visa and had to jump through hoops and pay for a nights stay at a hotel that I was not staying at just to get the damn thing registered for only 1 night  but even with that I was not given any trouble when leaving.

Russia, Ukraine and Belarusaeroflot...finally

... Aeroflot is still cheap and the main reason why is that many Russians don't trust the airline. Even thought the international trip is using Boeing planes, they don't trust the maintenance in Russia.

I have been looking at British Airlines to London- Chicago for POE. $200.00 more but my girl feels comfortable.

Maybe Aeroflot International flights using Boeing jets is not substantiated as a risk as I have never heard of an Aoreflot Boeing going down. ...

Aeroflot has not had a crash (with fatalities) in over 12 years...
http://www.airdisast...irline=Aeroflot

and none involving a Boeing aircraft.

For the non-stop flights both Aeroflot (JFK > SVO, LAX > SVO) & Delta (JFK > SVO) use the Boeing 767. The last Boeing 767 that went down was an 'Air China' in South Korea about 4 years ago ...
http://www.airdisast...gi?aircraft=767

Aeroflot gets a bad rap when in reality they are doing pretty well these days. The ones you have to watch are the smaller domestic Russian carriers! :o

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMoscow Interview Dates

Interesting... I wish I would have known to get our interview date from the NVC.

I had no idea that it was possible. I called the NVC ( DC area code), was on hold about 30 seconds. They were friendly, polite, and voluntarily told me everything about the case and the interview. I wish I had the number handy to share ( then again, if the call volume increased, I doubt they would be as helpful).

Last I dealt with them the numbers were...

NVC (603) 334-0700 prompts 1, 2

DOS (202) 663-1225 prompts 1, 0, 0 <-- for this one you'll need your MOS#

I wouldn't be too concerned in Moscow... Moscow & St Pete are far more European than the rest of Russia and some say if you only stay in Moscow you really have not seen the real Russia. I've been to some remote area's where it's more of a curiosity because they have never seen a black person but in the major western cities it's not uncommon.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMiddle name/second name?

As you may know, each russian/ukrainian person has a second or should i say middle name after their dad, it is only used in our official papers. Did you put down that name for your fiance or you left it blank?

I always thought it was called a patronym. But hey, you learn something new everyday.
Anyways, in our case we just turned the patronym into her middle name for USCIS purposes. Worked out just fine. But in my own case many years ago, all of us dropped our patronyms.
As I understand it, on your AOS application you can make your name almost whatever you want it to be. The application does ask all previous names used so they can easily trace it back.

In case anyone is interested...

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusPolish Embassy tourist visa

My fiance is in Belarus. She has her interview on April 2nd in Warsaw, Poland. She applied for a tourist visa to Poland and was denied. What should she do next?

Thanks,

Did she apply for a Schengen Visa? If not, try that. Apply to any other Schengen country, go there first then fly to Poland.

"Citizens of non-EU, non-EEA countries who wish to visit Europe as tourists, and who require a visa to enter the Schengen area, are simply required to get a common Schengen Visa from the Embassy/Consulate of the Schengen country they intend to visit first. After this, they may visit any or all of the Schengen countries as tourists or for business without hindrance. They are not required to get separate visas for all the (Schengen) European countries they wish to visit."

I use Medjet Assist... It's not really insurance but if you are hospitalized in some strange land ie. Russia you can opt for a flight back home to your hospital of choice. The important point here is that it is your choice and not that of an insurance company or a doctor, unless your medical condition prevents you from being moved. Rates are not bad... $225 for one year of coverage.

Fortunately I've never had to test it :)
