CanadaJob Interview

Another small question lol.. it came up when talking about the wage thing.

I have full coverage through the military. If I get FT position with this place it says medical benefits package. Is it inappropriate to tell them I have full medical and they wont have to pay for medical for me if they hire me? Is that even legal for them to not pay for medical coverage for a full time person if they already have full coverage? My husband isn't sure of how that works and I don't really want to cost them extra if it can be avoided by telling them.

It isn't inappropriate to tell them. Legally they have to offer health care, whether you take it is up to you. Also, hiring you just because you're "cheaper" because you wouldn't take health care is technically illegal. It would be considered discrimination. Not to say it isn't an advantage to you, but health care runs about $600-$1800 per person per month depending on the type of plan you take. It wouldn't hurt to mention it, and it might help.

As far as wages go, when a company asks you how much you want, always throw that ball back into their court. Keep in mind what you want to be paid, but you want to feel out their range before you come out and ask for X amount of money. Say something like, I was curious to know what you were willing to pay. Always keep in mind that the company is trying to hire someone as cheap as they can, and you're trying to get as much as you can. That be said, they'll most likely offer you the lower spectrum of where they're willing to go. The point of wage negotiation is to find something in the middle that makes both parties happy.

Interviews can be a paid in the #### just for these reasons, but remember they asked you to come which means they're interested in the abilities and talents that you have. Never sell yourself short. :)

Good Luck!!

CanadaJob Interview

I moved here on Tuesday, and was lucky enough to be hired yesterday! Only problem is though, I haven't received my SSN yet. I had my POE on the 15th, so is it likely I've been assigned a number and am just waiting on the card itself? If that's the case, can I call and get it somehow?

Jeff got his SSN card Thursday. They spelled his name wrong -.- In any case, I'm just glad we got it, faster that I thought too. Our cases seem to run parallel as far as timelines, so hopefully this is an indication that yours should come too. :)

CanadaA joint bank account.
I would suggest using TD Bank. I searched around to find a bank that was suitable for our situation and I've found TD Bank to be awesome. It's a Canadian bank, so when I travel to Canada and use my Visa/Debit card I do not get fees and they just automatically do the foreign currency adjustment. I also don't get slammed when I use the cash ATM in Canada either. I was also able to put my Husband on my account, him being the Canadian and myself the USC. I realize that's opposite of your situation, but because TD Bank is in both countries they might allow you to do the same.

CanadaTracking your Visa after Montreal Interview

Our status hasnt updated yet. How are all of you that interviewed way after us getting yours so soon? its not making sense.

I used our reference number to track our visa on the DHL website. the DHL waybill number wasn't updated on the visa website. DHL has a tracking option for reference and that should be the # that you're given when you registered.

Yay congrats!

If it says it's at Dorval, you can go pick it up. I believe you need two forms of ID so they know it's definitely you. :)

Sorry that you guys are having to wait so long. :(

CanadaNervous about Interview...hmmm
Delivery of a visa varies from person to person. My husband's visa was ready in two business days for pick-up and others don't come for another two weeks. Your best bet is to call DOS to find out what's going on.

Good luck to you.

CanadaITIN

I filed my returns last week and now lawyer wants certified copy for NVC. I claimed my Moroccan husband as we married in March 2010 and applied for his ITIN (individual taz payer identification number) Will this delay my return. I enclosed copy of his passport, birth certificate, National ID card and our marriage certificate translated into English. I can get copies as soon as IRS does the return but am wondering how long this might be. Thanks

For our ITIN it took months to get our taxes back. I think the major delay in our case is that he is a slacker and didn't have a passport. I had to send in his birth certificate along with photo ID and our marriage license. From there, we didn't realize we needed a translation. Between all the back and forth of the paperwork and the overall headache, I think we got our taxes back sometime during the summer.

Normally it shouldn't delay too much as long as you do it all correctly the first time, which we didn't. :)

CanadaTravel before Plastic Green Card Arrives?
You can travel with your visa, and not the green card. I asked an immigration lawyer about traveling before receiving it. She said that they don't always recommend it, but you can legally do it.

In any case, you should have no problem.

CanadaNeed info from other Canadians....please comment
I also have to agree with everyone here. Take the time and do it the correct way. I realize that it might feel like it takes FOREVERRRRR for it get approved, but the results are well worth it. My husband's visa took longer than normal, almost a year and a half in total. However now that it's approved and he's here with me everyday, I wouldn't trade that for anything.

There is something to be said about the peace of mind you will receive knowing that you did it the right way, no matter how long it takes.

CanadaWhich one?

Mumm... Must have changed then, because I was asked for it at my interview in Montreal (the translation)

When we went for our interview and were called up to one of the windows the man there was extremely rude about it. He asked me where the translation was and I told him I didn't have one. The response I got was a VERY rude "who told you that" and I explained to him what USCIS had told me over the phone. I got a dirty look but that was it. The woman at the actual interview said we were fine and the translation wasn't needed.

J-
Jill & JeffFemaleCanada2011-03-30 13:41:00
CanadaWhich one?

True, and if anyone is reading this, please note that the small one is completely useless with the consulate, and that if your birth was registered in French, you will not be able to have one issued to you in English. You'll need to have it translated.

We did not have to get my husband Quebec birth certificate translated to English. When I called USCIS they said as long as the birth certificate is in English or in the language of the country of interview (We interviewed in Montreal so a French birth certificate was fine) we did not need to have it translated.

CanadaWedding Anniversaires and what to do
When we chose our wedding date, we did it to coincide with his birthday and mine (my birthday Aug 4th, his Aug 10th, and our wedding Aug 7th). We did that so we could basically hit the important dates all at once and something special that covers everything.

For our first anniversary, we weren't yet done with immigration, by far (he didn't POE til January this year, so almost a year a half in total). We chose to take a week of vacation and went up to Prince Edward Island, which I have to say I really really enjoyed.

I think it's important to celebrate anniversaries, even if it's with something small. I'm sure that my husband and I will continue to "do something" on our anniversaries. I'd like to keep the tradition of taking a week of vacation, but I'm sure there will be times that it isn't feasible.

In any case, congrats and happy anniversary!

CanadaImporting my Vehicle
We live in New Hampshire, so there is no State tax. We'll have to pay property tax on the car, but that's different. Looks like we got screwed. Oh well, it's over and done with. -.-

CanadaImporting my Vehicle
I've been told by many on this forum as well on paperwork that you should not have to pay duty on your car if you're coming from Canada. My husband and I were up to Quebec this weekend for the Sugar Shack and stopped in to import his car on the way back. We ended up having to pay $225 in Duty fees. They valued his car at $10,000 and it was 3% on the first $1000 and then 2.5% on each $1000 after. I asked about waiving it because he immigrated but he said they don't do that.

No idea if we got screwed out of $225 or not, but I'm happy it's over and done with.

CanadaMoving furniture and car across the border??

When I moved to the US, I just took a uhaul truck with me. they didn't even inspect it. I packed it pretty good. with isles in between boxes just in case they wanted to inspect it.

When you take your car over, just be sure to have your ownership docs. you wont have any problems provided you own the vehicle and there is no lien on the car from a Canadian financial institution. Leases are even harder. As most leases prohibit you from taking your car to another country.

Within 90 days for your entry, you will need to import the vehicle formally into the United States.
this does not need to be done at the border and can be done informally at any US Customs and Border Protection Field office.

You will need EPA documents, a State Level 2 or Level 3 inspection and you will need to fill out the USCBP forms for importing a vehicle into the united states.
once that is done, you can register your car in the United States.

Can I actually import a car at any field office? When we did POE for my husband he "lost" his EPA letter and couldn't import his car. I figured we'd have to back to Highgate Springs to import his car this weekend.

Canadapregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?

Some will - I have coverage through Kaiser Permanente and they allowed me to add my husband to my coverage even though he doesn't have a SSN - they just used mine. OP needs to ask a rep from the health plan if they allow it.

I think this is a key question. I was able to have my Canadian husband covered on my health plan immediately after we were married and they didn't require an SSN. He did use the doctor and they covered it just fine. I believe you need to contact your health insurance to see what they are willing to covered. Also, some companies have the ability to waive initial waiting periods for coverage.

CanadaBirth Certificate

If you are from Quebec, it's the 1 pager not the laminated pocket-size version. It will have to be translated as Quebec does not provide English birth certificates.

If you are interviewing in Montreal it does not need to be translated. My husband's certificate was in French and when I called the NVC they said as long as the birth certificate was in English or in the language of the country where the interview is taking place, it does not need to be translated. We had no problem with it not being translated at the interview.

CanadaVaccinations
My husband got a titers (sp?) test when it came to his immunizations. He didn't have Hep A, but they gave it to him anyway just to be sure. He also ended up getting a tetanus shot as well. But yes, I would definitely recommend getting all the immunizations updated because they are expensive if you do them with your immigration medical.

CanadaMedisys medical review
Traffic in Montreal is disgusting. My husband lived in Repentigny which was about 20 minutes north. When I was looking for a job a couple years ago, I stayed up there for a couple weeks at a time and I would drive into Montreal to have lunch with him every so often. The 40 is CRAZY. A 20 minute drive would take an hour easily, and that's at lunchtime. Imagine how ridiculous it is in the morning.

When we got our interview date, I made him get his medical ASAP to make sure there were no issues. It was probably being paranoid, but we had the advantage of basically living in Montreal.

That's awesome, Jill! Congratulations to Jeff!! What staffing agency did he use?

He used a place called Premier Technical Staffing. He put his resume up on Monster and the recruiter called him. This was the first job interview they sent him to and he apparently nailed it. It's temp to perm for 3 months so they can decide if he's a permanent fit for the job.

He started today at 1. Looking forward to hearing how his first day went.

CanadaVehicle Import - Duties on CDN Market Vehicle?
Same thing happened to my husband. He has a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer. It was a similar situation, his VIN started with J, which meant it came from Japan. We didn't expect to have to pay import tax on it either, but it ended up being $250 as well. I was under the impression that it would be waived since we were coming from Canada, but nope. We just paid it and got it over with.

CanadaBiometrics After Arrival to US ?
I realize that everyone is saying that you shouldn't have a biometrics appointment, but I wouldn't fret if you do.
This happened with my husband's CR-1 visa as well.

When we did POE they didn't do his finger prints or anything like that. About a week or so after he received a biometrics appointment just like you have. He showed up, and all they took was the pointer finger and a picture. They said it was to verify that he was who he was. When I asked an immigration lawyer why we would have a biometrics appointment, she said not to worry and the picture they took will most likely be the one on his greencard.

No need to worry. My husband was only there for about an hour or so. From there, we just got our welcome notice receipt the other day and I'm expecting his greencard to show up with in a month or so (timeline in sig).

CanadaChanging date of interview

Hello everyone. I was wondering what people's experience was with changing an interview date in Montreal. We have the 15th of this month, which is great, except my fiancee is having a hard time arranging transportation. The train isn't a whole lot cheaper than a plane, plus cost of housing/transportation in Montreal. She figures it's close to $1000 and that's money we can't really afford to spend. Has anyone changed their date before and if so, how accomodating is the consulate. Will she hear right away, or go back into the pool? Thanks!

Hi, I have not myself gone through this but I have heard that once you have an interview and can't make that particular date that if you can't make it, they don't reschedule you. I don't know if others have heard this or not but my advice would be not to reschedule if at all possible. Like I said I have not experienced this but I know a friend of ours wanted to and was told they can not give them another date so what ever you do, make every effort not to cancel this appt....

Canadamedical exam

I read a little about this and seems like medicals for other types of visa requires the interview letter....BUT

Since you need to check mark that you have your medical results PRIOR to receive your interview letter with the date, I think for K-1s all you need is your NVC number on your letter that comes with Packet 3.

I need a clarification on that one but I think you should specify its for a K-1 because it would not make sense then if you would have to have it before they even assign you an interview date....

Let me know cause Im going through Montreal as well for everything ( i live there!)

mephys......thank you for the info. from what other people have said, some Dr.'s request the letter with the interview date on it and others don't. Other people have said they have called the Dr. and checked it off on the list and then sent the checklist in.....That's what we did as well.......

Since I am all confused re:translations (as you can see in my other posts); I wondered maybe I should contact MTL directly and ask them. Now, I wonder.... which method is better for this? CanadaWinnipeg Medical Experience & a question

I went for my medical today... Went to Dr. Drexler's office in Winnipeg. Tons of paperwork, chest x-ray, more paperwork, 2 vials of blood drawn, more paperwork, and then the exam. Dr. Drexler is a nice guy, he has a good sense of humor. It was a full exam, had to strip down and put one of those stupid paper gowns on. Nothing "abnormal" though.

I do have one question.. The head nurse kept telling me that I was supposed to have my appointment letter in-hand at the time of the medical... I didn't think this was the case. I thought I just had to have my Vancouver case number. Can anyone clarify this for me? She said it was because hte medical is only good for 6 months and they were supposed to confirm that I actually had an appointment.
