Middle East and North AfricaThings to tell your SO

It made me sad to see the other thread go so downhill so I thought I would try to start another one since I do think there are many things we can learn from each other on this subject. I don't venture much past the first page so if another thread for this was started already, I apologize.

You may not get a job the day you apply. You have to call every day until they get tired of hearing from you and either tell you to leave them alone or hire you.

Everything goes downhill in this forum.

I really hope this thread can maintain a light atmosphere to share our experiences. It makes me smile to see others that have had similar experiences as we have had

I take back my Levi statement. I just remember him saying he once got a pair of Levis for 5 dollars so I took him to the Levi store and he saw the price at 50 dollars. he just about passed out!

Another thing I couldn't stress enough to him was, You have to be patient in order to make any money here. You can't just start right off the bat at 30 bux an hour...you have to start small and work your way up (unless you are fortunate enough to have money to start off with or have jobs available nearby in your expected field).

I should have also told him that iced tea is not poison! He saw me put ice in it and said "no no that is bad ... not good" I said "taste it" and he has LOVED iced tea since that day ... he has told all his family and friends to try this new idea of ice tea...they all think he's nuts! hehehe

Amal you can get levis for 5 or 7 JOD in the second hand shops in downtown Irbid. They also have a Levis factory in Jordan. It's all about the trademark in Jordan.

Ok here's my tip. Your significant other will not be use to the food here at first and will probably get constipated and be embarassed to tell you. Another thing if your SO is on the thin side like mine is they might want to bring a lot of jeans and dress pants. If i can donate some of my adipose tissue/fat to my husband I would

Middle East and North AfricaJust mailed my I-129F package

Congrats and good luck.

A word of advice, be VERY proactive when it comes to the complete IDIOTS they have working at the embassy in Amman. Be sure to bug the SHITE out of them and the State Department every chance you get once your Visa enters the Administrative Processing phase. My fiance's Visa was approved OVER a month ago and NO ONE EVER CONTACTED US. I even emailed the embassy and asked about the status of the Visa and they replied telling me that they understand my frustration but have no idea when my visa will complete the AP phase - well, the Visa was READY FOR PICK-UP when they gave me this BS answer. It's obvious whoever answers the emails doesn't even check on the status of your case....they just feed you an answer to get you out of the way.

Flashbacks!!!!! hahaha

Wishing you a speedy process!

Middle East and North AfricaHappy (ugh) Monday

Well girls (and guys too).. Today is the first court date for my father where they decide if there is enough evidence to proceed with the case. :crying: :crying: I hope they get his case done first so we don't have to sit in the court house all day. If it isn't too much to ask, could you all think of us today and send a little bit of positive mojo our way? Maybe some good luck vibes from you all will carry over to the court and they'll just dismiss it due to lack of evidence....ugg

wow amal! sending mojo your way!

Two more days of work and i have the rest of the week off.  hoping these days go by quickly!

ok, i have a question to all you nurses and doctors out there.... this may be a stupid question but i have to ask anyway... here goes
if a woman has had her tubes tied for about 8 years.... is it dangerous to get a reversal and try to get pregnant since the tubes have been tied off and unused for so long?... any input here is appreciated...

i think i might see my OB tomorrow so I'll ask him about it. :)

Middle East and North Africasomething to tell

o DRs and RNs any tips for women who want to become pregnant?

one of the tips my OB gave me when I wanted to start trying to get pregnant was know when I was ovulating. He told me to go buy an ovulating test kit. He told me to start testing on the 11th day from the first day of my period. So the first day of your period will count as the 1st day and so on. Start taking prenatal vitamins before you start trying also. Oh and keep a record of your monthly period.

Middle East and North AfricaIs it SATURDAY??

You know, he's been here a month now and I'm so full of "wow, he's yummy" "your husband is gorgeous" "he should be a model" "if you don't want him, can I have him?" I could puke. He's my HUSBAND people! I guess I should take it as a compliment but its making me uncomfortable. I guess I have some self-esteem issues to deal with. Oh well. He'll make good tips. Ha ha. His looks never had a thing to do with why I love him so this has all been kind of weird. I had fallen in love with him before I ever even saw what he looked like.

Now you've got my curiosity running wild......can we see a pic of him???

You are kidding right????!!

I didn't mean it like that.....I was truely just curious to know what he looks like.......I can't help that i'm a nosey journalist.

I think everyone is a little shy about posting pictures of themselves with their SO. We had a sharmoota who shall remain nameless who exploited a few our ME/NA ladies on her blog. Jean and her husband make a very nice looking couple :)

Middle East and North AfricaDivorce in MENA countries

I am divorced and my fiance nor his family had any problem with it. Although if we were to marry in Jordan they wanted to be sure we waited the 3 months, but we decided to do the K1 anyways. His father is divorced and remarried and his mom never remarried and lives in Turkey. I haven't met her in person but we're already in love with each other, she's an amazing woman. I have a teenage son too (very young mom) and there aren't any issues with that either so far. My son and fiance are very excited to meet each other. Most likely he will be going with me on my next trip in 7 weeks, inshaAllah.

ets: My fiance has never been married

no issues here.

I took my son to Jordan with me to get to know my husband and his family. It was one of the best things I ever did.

Yeah I'm there is nothing wrong with a minivan (sorry to all those minivan drivers outthere!) but it just isn't me. I just talked to the guy at the dealership and he is gonna call me as soon as their next loaner comes in, hopefully soon! I can't even drive the thing, lol.

That's the thing. If you're not driving kids around AND you're not used to driving such a big car, you kind of feel ridiculous. And you don't even have your CD's to make you feel better! :crying:

My friend from work gaves us two cats and we had a dog, my son's dog. Anyways my husband had no problem with the dog until it made an accident because nobody let him out. Middle East and North AfricaWhat's up with all the daily threads ?

Let me break this down for in a simple way.

GEG, Charles, Brnidokiegurl, and now Natty:

People are quite sick of you getting on your soap box about this so called clique as you have been doing it every chance you get. It's quite apparent that you have one of your own. You make a daily thread and its the 4 of your posting back and forth to each other. You say you don't have issues with someone else making a daily thread yet you don't post in them when they are made. I made 3 threads last to show how silly this whole thing has gotten. You feel there is a clique amongst mena, then that is fine. However its friendship which can't and won't be broken up.

You guys talk about being grown adults yet you indirectly talk about everyone here on the boards, that isn't childish? I will admit that I have participated in some childish behavior, but so have all of you. So when you sit around an point fingers as if you haven't done a thing, its quite insulting. We heard what you said about cliques, but let me assure you these are friendships that are open to everone and anyone. On the other hand, many of us feel that some of you go out of your way to instigate a fight. When a subject matter has caused a 20 page argument, ettiquite would be not to re-open that subject. When you do you are only instigating a fight and if you get what you asked for don't be surprised.

Now I know all of this has hurt the board, clearly we are not going to get past our differences but we can at least be civil. I would like to call for a truce, which is not censorship. We all fight here from time to time, we are stressed out and there are alot of hormones running around here. But in the end we all get over it, which makes this a family not a clique.

ROFLMAO, omg my fiance does the same thing! One of his biggest concerns about coming here is finding a barber who does threading. for 1JD.....lol

LOL! I told my Dh that there will be none of that here! I was like this is ARKANSAS and you're lucky if you can find someone who will speak a form of English you even understand, let alone thread.

Actaully, he let me pluck it with tweezers and it was kind of fun! LOL! He made a lot of jokes about how maybe I would finish before one of us died...

my sister in law showed me how to do threading but when it came to try it i couldn't, so now I just pluck the strays from my husband's face. He's the same. sometimes he's clean shaven, then scruffy beard and then just a goatee, but never a full beard. i had my eyebrows threaded while I was there in Jordan they came out awesome and stayed that way for a while then it was back to plucking.

We need to buy one of those we have a huge yard to mow during the summer :) What we should have invested in was a freaking snow blower. We live on a street where the city doesn't clean during snow storms thank god we have a SUV because I don't think we could have made it out of the driveway.

I wanted to buy another car and a house before my husband came but he wouldn't have none of that, and insisted that I wait until he got here. He wanted to pay for half once he was financial able too. We needed another car asap once he got a job, so i just co signed the loan for him and he pays the payment. We recently bought a house together. Not bad for his first year here. I'll have to agree with what Henia said. "what matters is that you are together and have jobs and a roof over your head and food to eat."

Middle East and North AfricaSo What Do YOU Do????

LOL! Yeah those kids! I have perfected the look away and stern "lah shukran" and they don't bother me. If my husband is there, they leave us alone in general. They are cute though! My husband worked in Jerash this summer and I was so jealous! Jordan University was having a dig there and he worked on their faunal and human remains.

You could always volunteer! I know my school takes volunteers and it's like only $55/day plus your plane tickets and spending money.

I take back what i said in a previous post. If i can imagine myself doing something else it would be your job and only if i can work in jordan all the time. :) When we were in Jerash we had all these little kids coming up to us wanting us to buy these old roman coins. Of course we didn't but just to hold them and look at them in your hands knowing you were holding something over a 1000 years old was surreal.

That sounds like a good job! I wonder if they still do that one trick in Jerash. It involves a swaying column..hehehe. I had this one cute chubby kid with cowboy boots asking me if I wanted to see something "Hey lady do you wanna see something wonderful" for 5 dinars I'll show you..heheheh We didn't have to pay but he showed us anyways. He stuck like this knife in a crack and pushed it and it did seem like the column moved. I miss Jordan I could stay all day at Jerash and Um Qays.

Middle East and North AfricaSo What Do YOU Do????

Well my current JOB is working at a hotel, but I am a graduate student in Bioarchaeology (human remains in archaeology which is a subfield of biological anthropology! yay! For anthropology!). I specialize in the Middle East, North Africa, and Western Europe through the Middle Ages... which is how I met my Dh since he's at Yarmouk University and does the same thing. We worked on a site together.

Posted Image

I know what I saw in him, but I;m not sure what he saw in me :) LOL! Except he is secretly crazy too :) Anyway, this year I was teaching the field school for the university and many people fell under my.. ummm. guidance.

Posted Image

But mostly? It's a lot of paperwork.

Posted Image

Both years I worked in Jordan we excavated tombs from the Bronze era through the Byzantine. Tombs are robbed mostly (99.9%) and we're studying the remains we can find and the archetecture. Jordan of course keeps everything. We are trying to beat the looters, but it's impossible. Most of their stuff is sold on ebay actually, and it's extremely illegal and harmful to the cultural heritage.

I am home alone, husband is at work.
I mentioned in off topic my husband was in a wreck yesterday. There were a lot of car accidents due to a freak rain storm which instantly turn to ice. the sidewalks were so icy you could barely stand up. They had to close the viaducts that go over the railroad tracks because cars and trucks couldn't make it over them. One of our vehicles was damaged about 1300 dollars to fix. Thank goodness we have full coverage on it, but most of all I am very thankful my husband didn't get hurt. After work all i wanted to do was hug and kiss him and was very very grateful nothing happen to him.

I am so sick of winter and can't wait for spring!!!!!
