Over-prepared is good. good.gif At the Colombian Consulate, we sat with a young woman who did not have funds to pay for her Visa, nor her I-134 documents. She was upset, and her Fiancé was probably not too happy, either.

I'm wondering why they bothered if they cant afford it....like ur gonna get it for free?

Maybe something happened at the last moment... who knows. That's too bad sad.gif So what did they end up doing? (if you know)

That's the right mindset! Hard to keep in that mindset constantly in this process, but I'm crossing my fingers and saying extra prayers for you guys.

Emily and Gareth-congrats on the new interview date! You guys can still be together by Thanksgiving, hopefully.

Hope everyone is doing well. Think of you guys often.

Did I miss something with Emily and Gareth?

Ok, so after careful consideration and reading some posts regarding others interviewing at the Mumbai Consulate. It seems to be that if you deliver packet 3 in person to the consulate they will give you interview date the same day. So, my fiance is going to go next week and do that. I hope it all goes well, as Mumbai is not close by. It's like a drive from Cali to Las Vegas, NV but just imagine the roads to be a bit more horrible.

Well, it's worth it to get the interview date that day instead of later.
You guys will probably be together for Christmas at this rate!

Funny how every US consulate does things a bit differently, isn't it? Good luck!

So, here is the deal guys. NVC sent out my petition on 10/9/09, so my fiance and I thought it would be ok to send out Packet 3 on Monday at least get an interview date. I am pretty sure they have it now. I guess I will just email them to confirm.

NVC operaters are so much more helpful, and provide a lot more information. I like their hours as it helps me out after work.

How is everybody doing? I have to catch up on all the posts.

Emily sorry to hear about the RFE, but I am sure once you provide that you will get the visa. You are not too far away now.

Ian Lisa & St. Louis I am crossing my fingers for you, and as I said before it will be a success.

Hiya! Thanks for the good wishes!

Just wanted to say I hope the rest of the process goes very speedily for you and everyone. We are set to "GET PINK" on Wednesday. Ian is nervous, but I keep assuring him it will be fine! He's just paid the equivalent of $30 for 4 American passport photos. Good gosh! (Snappy Snaps, Allie)

BTW, if you email NVC, they will take 2 weeks to get back to you. Hopefully you're emailing the consulate or DOS. And you've got your new case number, I take it? Keep in touch with DOS... they're really good with providing information.

Have a good weekend peoples!

Thanks for that information. I forgot about calling DOS, and I just emailed the consulate to confirm if they recieved. I am confident it is recieved by now. Just back from my interview in London, England today guys... Frustrating to say the least. Im really tired so I will give you a quick summary! Everything went well up until the last minute of my interview. She said everything looks to be in order but then she told me that they are going to need me to get a police certificate with fingerprints from Australia. I went on a working holiday visa to Australia 5 years ago for a total of 361 days.... not one year or more.

It says clearly in the Instructions of Packet 3 - "If the applicant…lived in a different country for more than 12 months"

I didnt live there for more than 12 months so I dont really understand why they would do that? Couldnt they have told me that they were going to require that before now? I could have applied for it months ago and had it for them today. Now it has set our plans way back and its really frustrating. I was going to book my ticket for the 20th of November when I got home today sad.gif

Emily is really upset as she was really looking forward to booking our wedding stuff today or tomorrow...Now it looks like we are going to have to wait at least another month. Apparently its 15 working days for the Police check with Fingerprints in Australia and combine that with postage times from here to there and from there to here it could well be over a month before I even get the certificate back from Australia....Then I have to send it on to the embassy who have to process it and send me my visa...

Really sucks. Just want to get over there and we thought we were so close.

Wow... That does suck. I scanned through the police requirements, and it doesn't appear there is expedited processing, but you can save some mailing transit time, at least, by overnighting things where you can. I'll be hoping for a speedy resolution!

So, here is the update on my petition. It was sent out to the consulate on the 9th from NVC. That was really fast additional processing smile.gif . Does NVC assign another case number? Or can you still use USCIS case number to send out packet 3. My fiance is ready to send out Packet 3, but we were going to include a cover letter and wanted to confirm what case number to use. Anyone can shed any light? Thanks again for all your help.

NVC assigns a case number based on your embassy. Just call NVC tomorrow and ask them for it. smile.gif

Good idea, Rhiann! Let us know what you find out. smile.gif I've had good luck with DOS. Everytime I call, they have good info for us.

Attaya - Have you thought about getting married at the courthouse? Ian and I are thinking about that. It's the least complicated, and (at least in Nebraska), you don't have to give much notice. Judges or retired judges are usually immediately available. Some will do it off-site. The tough thing for me has been finding a site. So far, the least expensive place has been a B&B which offers an indoor wedding in their living room area and a small reception using their dining area and their kitchen. It's nice, but I can't decide!

SS - Very nice photos! Glad you are together again! Wedding plans?

Allie - Yeah, we got lucky and hit London at just the right time, apparently. The visas themselves are taking about 10 days, I hear. We'll see. Our paperwork reached them on 9/24 and our interview was assigned on 10/7, for 10/21. I have a somewhat nervous SO right now. lol

Good luck to everyone on their journey this week!

My SO got a call from the Consulate to come and pick up her packet 3 yesterday. Woo hoo....and the cool thing is that we are ahead of the curve thanks to VJ, these forums and others members who have went through the Panama Embassy, that we know she already has EVERYTHING they need including the I-134 and supporting docs and completed DS230, 156 and 156K forms. So she will then be able to say "well I have all these things and I am ready to schedule the medical and interview". Now I have a question that maybe somebody can give me advice on....my SO has never traveled outside her country. I will fly to Panama to be with her at the interview, but I may let her fly to the US by herself. Her POE would be ATLANTA and I would meet her there with my parents. I suppose there is no way that I could gain clearance to meet her once she exits the entire POE process is there? My fear is she will get lost and I will have difficulty locating her. Thoughts?

I had the same fear Marverick but everything worked out great for us. I know every airport is different, but at Minneapolis/St. Paul I was able to wait at the doors that ALL international flights come out of ( Pending there isn't a connecting flight ). I would assume most airports do it this way as well. Basically Jenelyn could not get lost. She got off the plane, followed the hallway to the entering lines for the international flights, she had to find the "First time Immigration" line. From there they took her visa and scanned her fingerprints. Than asked her 3 questions, how long have her and I been dating/how long have you known each other. When is your wedding? Than Where is your fiance from. It took her about 15 minutes total. From there she was given her suite case, and followed the exit signs to where I was waiting for her. There was only one way for her to go.

What I did was ask at the airport, what is the closest point I could wait for her at and I had a very nice woman there actually escort me to where I could wait and she assured me she would not get lost as long as I waited there for her. It worked out great. Good luck !

Funny enough, I was worried for myself flying to England for the first time. Heathrow gives little chance to get lost, really... There's a flow to airports.

When Ian arrived in Omaha, the only confusing thing for him was not getting his luggage before leaving the secured area. You may want to let her know she gets her luggage after she meets you if she's used to something else.

I really think she will be fine.

Hello everyone,

I have had a busy week with work and all so I haven't been online other than to check email and pay a few bills.

I skimmed over the past few days of the thread sounds like everyone is moving along with the process!

Congrats Ian and Lisa !!!!!! So awesome and so happy for you two!

Star - I wouldn't worry to much about being told about being in AP ... they told me the same thing the first day I called, the funny thing is our petition was only in NVC for 1 day ... so basically it is just their standard response until it leaves NVC.

Attaya - Sounds like you and Lamine are enjoying your life together !! Today Jenelyn and I will be doing the same .. I leave in about a hour or so to drive to the airport to meet and pick her up ... finally together again .. so excited ! Do you have a wedding date set yet Attaya?

Ken - Congrats man ... Happy for you two and happy the interview was a success ! Sounds like in a little over a month you two will be together here in the States as well !

Endoftheroad- How are things shaping up for you all? Things starting to settle down with her X's family so you can get your interview when they schedule it? I hope so ... you guys have been waiting a long time to see each other in person ... good luck !

Well all, take care, I have the next 5 days off work and I pick her up today. I don't think I will be online much for the next 5 days. So I wish you all the best of luck for the rest of the process and I am excited to see the updates when I get on next !

SS: Yay! Glad to hear you are together again!

Ken: Congrats! So exciting!

EOTR: Hang in there. What a pain!

Hello, the rest of you! Hope you're having a good (and productive) weekend.

For any of you who know Minnew, her wedding day was today (in Nebraska), and I think this was the first time ever it has dumped 2 - 5" of snow in Nebraska this early in October.

When I asked God to hurry things up to winter, I wasn't really asking for winter to show up in early October. smile.gif

QUOTE
Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong

You know its gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together

Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through

The happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Oh Wouldn't it be nice

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true
Baby then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do
We could be married
And then we'd be happy

Wouldn't it be nice

You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But lets talk about it
Oh, wouldn't it be nice

good night my baby
sleep tight my baby

Just that many do not get a P4...... just get an interview date. Our P3 is done too but neither of us have an interview date. Just eliminated the "done P3" status. If splitting the P3 status in two is better for you, you can post what you like and continue the updating, no problem! good.gif

*sigh*

Back to the WAITING GAME thread that started here too but has moved elsewhere.

That's odd... about the P4. In London, the appointment letter is our "ticket to get in" to our interview.

I called DOS today to see if we had an interview date set. No luck.

How long do you suspect you'll have to wait for yours?

While imitation is a form of flattery, what is the difference between being at the P3 status (which means you are past NOA2 and completing the P3 status to get an interview) and "waiting for P4" (which not every country uses)? P4 means you have an interview date so P4= INTERVIEW.

You can change it, of course. It just made more sense to me.

Sorry I havent updated the status of our case in a while guys.... I called the Department of State quite a lot over the last few weeks to find out any updates...

On the 29th of Sept to my surprise....they told me that my interview was going to be on the 16th of October in London! Called and booked my medical straight after I got my letter for the 12th Oct so I am heading to London this coming Saturday and staying with family for 6 days....Cant wait to get it all over with!! Wooooooooooooooo!

Congrats! Ian just went to Bentinck Mansions today and said it was pretty quick and painless (well, after the 2 shots he needed)

Sounds like it was a short timespan between your P3 received date and your interview being set. I think I will call tomorrow.. smile.gif I just have a feeling it's going to come quickly.

Happy days!

Yes it is such a relief. Now I have to get the documents for P3, and inform my fiance what he needs to have ready. I think that is going to be the most difficult part laughing.gif . I am not sure if they have a website, but I heard they can email you the documents you need for P3. I am going to research this and find out about the requirements at the consulate. I just got so excited about the NOA2 that I forgot about everything else laughing.gif .

Thank you all of you for your well wishes smile.gif . Btw how do I keep track of my petition to see when it reaches NVC.

I found this link on the New Delhi embassy site (is that your embassy?)

As far as NVC is concerned, in about a week - 10 days from NOA2, your petition should be there. You can reach them by calling 603 334-0700. Follow the prompts for a live operator. The automated system does not work for K1 visas.

Congrats!

Greetings from Bogota, Colombia - the city shrowded in fog/clouds. I´m stationed exactly 2 blocks from the U.S. Embassy, but at the moment, on Carretera 70 waiting for Leidys´ Medical Exam to be completed. The city is a much different environment from the Northern Coast. Sightseeing is an activity reserved for the idle rich rather than a simple VJer like myself.

For Example: A trip into the nearby mountainside to check out a trendy brew pub would cost $45USD per person each way - taking the Transmilleniu Public Transportation. A simple day trip from Barranquilla to Santa Marta del Rodadero by comparision would cost roughly $45 for two persons, meal included. Leidys and I went this morning to have her TB and blood work performed, and I checked out this cool park on the mountainside near Carrera 38. The photography speaks volumes of the local environs, just too bad it is so expensive to travel the countryside.

With all of the Medical exams being completed today, Leidys and I plan to have a VJ reunion with some local Bogotans tomorrow afternoon. Wednesday morning is the Visa Interview, and we´re both anxious and excited for what is to come. WeLoveBogota.com has an excellent apartment that Leidys really loves. She keeps telling me the apartment is so nice, that it makes her feel as if we are already on our honeymoon ¨Luna de Miel¨. Pretty cool advice on the accomodations, VJ - we really love our hotelapartment! good.gif Hasta muy pronto,

Ken

Sounds like you're having fun!

Congrats on completing the medical. Ian completed his today, as well. One hurdle out of the way!

Hello all .. thanks everyone for the support and congrats ... we appreciate it and we can't wait to congrat the rest of you all as well soon !

Attaya - No we won't be traveling together, I am currently working on some really important projects for work and have not been able to take time off ... I do have a couple days off when she flies to the US ( Hopefully on Oct. 10 ) ... her and I talked and weighed out our options and decided to take a few days off when she is here rather than taking the time off for the interview and flight.

Maverick - Congrats ... finally out of AP ... and it's great Panama is said to be a fast embassy !! Not too much longer than !

Starlight - I am pretty confident that touch is your approval ... from my experience with our RFE I am fairly confident to say it was your approval. You could call and ask to be escalated to find out ... but ... it might not be updated in the system until Monday ... that is what happened to me. I seen the touch on the day we got our approval and called .. and was told it was still in processing, but in reality it was a approval .. but when I called a couple days later I was told we were approved on that date of the last touch. Good luck Star !!! We have you in our prayers !

Ian and Lisa - Are you expecting to hear soon of a interview date? How long is the UK embassy running out right now? I hope soon for you two !

Hiya... Congrats on your approval!

I'm thinking we should have Ian's interview letter within the next week or two. London seems to be moving right along.

Hello everyone,

Interview-wise, Leidys and I are up next. In 48 hrs., I will be flying out of LAX into Bogotá where Leidys and I will meet up, and station ourselves 5 min. (walking distance) from the US Embassy. We have our $131 Visa fee paid, and while the US Dollar is literally plummeting on a daily basis, I hope to be in and out of Bogota before the US Dollar hits 1,500:$1. wacko.gif

We have all of our forms ready, I just have to make copies of some Chats and process some photographs for the Embassy Interview. Our hotel room has internet, so I will let everyone know how the interview goes. kicking.gif

SSN nightmare

SSN issues

endoftheroad-we actually posted the exact same quote--I had just put in the first paragraph and you pasted the entire entry.

Here are a couple of links to topics talking about SSN's and the importance of getting them ASAP. The reason you should try to get it prior to getting married is that there are lots of people who have had a nightmare of a time dealing with poorly trained workers who say that since you are married and you came here on a fiance visa, that you no longer have any valid documents stating your right to be here and you must wait until AOS and/or EAD. I've been reading every SSN story I can find on VJ, and this seems to be the consensus. You might have no problems, but you might have lots of them. I'm just not going to risk it.

Anyways-Allie, I'm glad that everything worked out with the medical despite Nigel's forgetfulness smile.gif Lamine pulled something similar with me and I almost had a heart attack on the spot.

We're giving it another shot at the SSN office tomorrow (in another town), but I'm not too concerned. I know it'll work out one way or another. As Starlight said, Lamine is here with me, and I really can't ask for anything else smile.gif

It would be good to have an SSN for adding your SO to bank accounts, etc., too.

Hey everyone, Sending you guys all my prayers and happy thoughts that everything goes well.

Endoftheroad-regarding SSN's, this is what VJ says:

As a K-1 Visa Holder you are eligible to receive a SSN upon producing a valid I-94 (unexpired). Do
not wait until you only have a few weeks left until your I-94 expires to file for a SSN. Many SSA
offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior
to the expiration on your I-94). On the other hand, you should also not file for a SSN too soon either.
You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN.
If you go to the Working and Traveling Prior to Green card forum, you'll read some stories about people waiting until after they got married who had a nightmare of a time getting their SSN's. Who knows, but I'm going to try to do this ASAP.

Starlight-you're right-the best part is that Lamine is with me now. Nothing else really matters. All this other stuff is just formalities. I'm so grateful to be with him again. I hope you get that NOA2 soon, soon, soon!

Allie-good luck with the medical! Or rather---Nigel, good luck with the medical today!

Rhiann-hope you get that P3 soon.

Try to hang in there, guys. I hope everyone is well and that you all get some good news soon!

Thanks for that! I'm putting it into my VJ notebook. smile.gif Did you make it to the other office yet?

starlight-any news?

Allie- I'm glad that P3 got taken care of and I hope that everything else goes smoothly for you smile.gif

I know I'm missing tons of stuff, but I hope you're all doing well.

endoftheroad-you should definitely try to get the social security # prior to getting married. You should try to do it two weeks after POE when your entry is registered in the system. Especially if the beneficiary is female, make every effort to get the SSN prior to getting married. There are countless stories of headaches and having to wait until after AOS before you can get the SSN (i.e. waiting until AOS to work). I'm going to go into a different office on Tuesday if I haven't heard anything on Monday. I'll go to a bigger city, and it shouldn't be an issue. There are many stories of people not being aware that K-1's are eligible for SSN's.

I'm keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. Hope everyone is well.

I thought K-1 people normally had to wait to get an EAD to work, and if a SSN was issued, it was marked that it wasn't for employment purposes, but it appears this area might be not set in stone, according to this: http://www.visajourn...h...1&sa=Search

Don't worry Allie... you'll still have an interview before me. laughing.gif

And I'd have to admit... if the roles were reversed and my fiance was sitting on paperwork and not getting it back ASAP, I'd be freaking out a bit. hahaha My packet 3 was delayed, but that's just cause I was away until the 5th, and then it was a holiday Monday, and then I couldn't get out of work during the day on the 8th to get to the post office. So technically, that was ASAP even if it was a week later. lol

But yeah, I think if Nigel has his medical on Monday it might give him the jolt he needs to get going!

Hehe... I think we all got to freak out a bit about completion of the paperwork. smile.gif There was a bit of tongue-biting going on, as well. But it's done now (thank God). I think they are a bit more complex to fill out than they look, and sitting down with them for an hour or two just doesn't get it done.

Suggest sending the papers by registered mail, Allie. That way you have a tracking number to ensure it's delivered. Ours got there Thursday afternoon.
