Sounds like things are right on track! Good luck smile.gif

I am just happy that I've started networking/job searching and am feeling really good about it. My instincts are telling me that I'm on the right track. My resume is looking good, 2 recruiters have my resume and I've made about 4 connections at different agencies. I haven't sent out any more cold resumes yet, I'm waiting until I'm closer to the EAD... but I'm just really happy with the networking so far. Once I get my EAD and I'm full force job hunting I think I'll be in good shape. I think my career and the city I moved to is the perfect combination.

I got a nibble on one of the resumes that I sent out. I've only been invited for a phone interview. I wonder if I can turn that into a face-to-face one. In Bermuda, I'd just invite the recruiter to lunch but I'm not so sure that's appropriate here in the US.

A phone interview is definitely a good sign! The last job i got started with a phone interview. Usually it means they just want to hear you speak and then they'll invite you to meet with the people in the department/division.

^Congrats ATeam, that is amazing!! Greecard and weightloss smile.gif

My happiness is that today I went to Wal-Mart to buy some towels (my friend got a me giftcard for Wal-Mart Canada, she thought I could use it in the US, but I couldn't so I went and spent it)

Anyways... I bought a Canada flag beach towel to take to the beach and it rang up as $1 and I didn't notice until I got home! I'm happy about that.

Then when said friend calls her old boss that she hasn't spoken to since 2002 and then he says that he would definitely like to meet with me when I move. I <3 Networking and amazing bosses. You've been job hunting only 1 week and get called for an interview!! When I was at the gym I had a message from the manager at one of the companies I applied at, and here's the better part: I applied for a customer service job, and he said on the message by reading my resume he feels I'm more qualified for the CSR supervisor job!! Which is good news, I called him back but no answer so I left a message, hopefully he calls me back soon.... I'm nervous because I haven't had an interview in FOREVER my last job I was there almost 8 years! But this is a good start.... And the office is a 10 minute drive from home, not to get ahead of myself though!

Amazing news Jill!! Sounds very promising! Before I went into PR, I worked as a summer student in Customer Service (at a Hydro call centre) and even though some days were a bit bad with mean people, I did love helping people and working in customer service. Good Luck!! I'm sure you'll do fine in an interview.

There's a good chance that I could get a transfer to our sister company in NYC. Right now, the recession is not working in my favour, but I've put in the ask with my HR person and she is 100% in support of me, so that is a good feeling.

CanadaTD canceling my Visa becase moving to the US?
They tried to tell me that I couldn't have a card either when I first moved, but ended up calling back and speaking to someone else who changed the address no problem. It was annoying because they also said they couldn't send me a new card at one point to a US address. I don't even use my Canadian card anymore, I'm just keeping it on the off chance I move back since it's my only Canadian card.

I keep a Canadian TD bank account too, and they had no problems changing my address, but could only do it AFTER I moved, which was a bit of a pain. They wanted to see a bill or ID with my new address on it.

I've pretty much gone all paperless now though, which I recommend to everyone!

CanadaDo I still have to file Canadian taxes if I don't live in Canada?

Well I called the CRA and they were of no help, the lady basically told me that I have to make the decision whether or not I am a resident. To which I said, "well that's why I'm calling you, you're the CRA and I don't know whether I am or not. You should be the deciding factor, you don't pay taxes to ME. How do YOU make that determination." to which she very hastily repeated her original statement again, and added a URL to follow on the CRA website which, yet again, vaguely explains what are some of the criteria of deeming a person a resident or non-resident. And it did not really state WHO should be deeming the person - the CRA or me?? So I'm not filing anything this year, but I'm still nervous.

I have a line of credit in Canada that I still owe money on, and a checking account.. So, should I play it safe and close the accounts and get a line of credit here to consolidate?? I don't ever plan on living in Canada again, but at the same time, I like having bank accounts there for when I visit. Am I freaking out over something that's not a big deal?

I am in the exact same situation as you with a line of credit and a bank account and I in no way consider myself a resident of Canada. I don't have any other ties, my bank account carries my US address and all of my identification is US-based. I don't consider having a line of credit and bank account a big deal at all.

I don't plan to file a Canadian return as I have no CDN income and don't consider myself a resident.

I notified every agency the week before I moved.... I sent a letter to OHIP so it was in writing, that I was cutting up my card which I did and no longer a Canadian resident.... I also sent the DMV a letter and cut up my license too. I notified the govt and they cancelled my GST rebate cheques.... Of course not my SIN number, that is with you for life! I had a list that I got off VJ and I'm sure there are other places I notified but cannot recall right now....

Did you really cut up your license? Why? I'm guessing you cut it up after you got your PA license?

NYS kept my old license, but I still had an expired Ontario one previous to the one they kept, so I'm glad I still have it because it's in my married name and it's the only thing with a photo (other than my passport) that shows my maiden name and all my Canadian banking is still in my maiden name, so if I use my Canadian visa and someone asks for photo id, then at least I have my old license.

What is the value in telling OHIP that we've left? Just wondering. I'm pretty sure I didn't and I just want to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble, LOL.

Yes, I got my PA license soon after moving and only cut up my ON license then. Well I had no need for it anymore and didn't want a souvenier, LOL but I read a story that Bermycat posted once it scared me LOL. She said that she was in secondary once and a guy was in there with his Canadian license but he had a green card.... and having the Canadian license was proof he was still a Canadian resident or something and was trying to have 2 residencies so they took away his green card or something like that.... maybe she can clarify the details of the story. I just didn't need it anymore!

As for OHIP, I just read it on one of the lists of people to notify. It's on their website that if you move out of Ontario, it's your obligation to notify them so I sent a letter as recommended.

That makes sense. I plan to just not travel with any of my Canadian ID, but I still have it in case I ever move back. I'm especially not giving up my red and white health card! That baby never expires!

I still have all of that. I called the necessary people and canceled my benefits after I arrived in the US (ie. GST) and that's about it. You're still a Canadian citizen, why would you have to give up your SIN card? And you can keep a Canadian bank account as long as you want, just make them aware you are moving so they can adjust your information accordingly. When you no longer need it, weather that be the day you moved or 5 years later, then you should close it.

Good point about the GST! I was going to call them and cancel that and didn't qualify this year, so that solved itself! But yes, that's a good thing to call and cancel.

You just move and tell all the necessary agencies and people you are moving.

I believe the day you leave Canada is the day you give up residency according to tax people. It might be the date you get your greencard for tax purposes.. I'm not sure but I'm sure someone else can chime in.

ETA: Jsut realized you are on a CR1 - so I am definitely not following you the same since I did a K1!

I meant giving up on Social Sec. Card,Health card, advising the bank people that you will no longer be living in Canada etc...that kind of administration stuff which will also affect your tax filling when it is due....

You know I don't think I told OHIP that I moved. I may have, but I'm blanking out now. Either way, I told my Dr., so I figured that was enough for her to accept a new patient and I don't plan on using my card anymore. I left my bank address the same because they required a piece of mail or ID with my new address on it to change and I plan to tell Revenue Canada when I file my taxes next year.

I would just have your greencard out and show that but bring the original letter in case they ask you (i can see them asking) about the extension/expiry.

Treat the extension letter with the care and respect of your passport/greencard so you don't lose it. If you get stuck in Canada longer, you would need it to get back in after the expiry of your card.

If you are flying through Pearson, def leave extra time to go through customs. When I went through on my extension letter they made me go to secondary and I spent an extra 45 minutes in there waiting my turn.

Yeah, I think we can just book another InfoPass and get a stamp extension.

Peachey -- you will get a letter right away, if your package went through. Sent mine via USPS with tracking and got the delivery receipt. Two days letter, I got the NOA-1.

Sapphire -- have you gotten notice about your extension? If you were preggy, you would be a month overdue!!! Are you planning on getting another renewal? How does that work? LOL, sorry for all my questions!

BTW anyone who has questions about cruising with an expired GC - I put up my experience in working/traveling during immigration.

I got the original NOA1 in August, but haven't heard anything since. I think I should hear something any day now, they are working on August cases.

I actually have a temporary greencard stamp on my passport. We were worried I would have to travel for work or we would have trouble on our cruise back in December, so hubby made me make an InfoPass and the guy gave me the stamp so I'm okay until October. I think the letter would've worked fine though and we were overly cautious.

Just a heads up that if you do lose the receipt or if you don't get the receipt or if your ROC takes more than a year to process and the receipt expires, you can always make an Infopass appointment at your local USCIS office and ask for the I-551 stamp to be placed in your valid passport. If you do no have a valid passport, then you can bring your expired passport and 2 passport style photographs and they will make an I-94 for you, stamp the I-551 on the I-94 and place that in the expired passport. Bring something that has your A number on it as they will look your file up by your A number. Stamps are generally issued with 1 year validity, but may be as little as 6 months as well. As I never received the ROC receipt/extension letter, I got the I-551 stamp in my passport and it worked fine.

I went on a cruise back in November while doing ROC. It was fine, although the check in went a bit odd since the desk agent didn't fully understand that the stamp was my greencard. She took my word for it though and didn't cause any issues in the end. Also, we went through the Tampa port and they do immigration on the ship, so they didn't really question the stamp at all... but their process was different than other ports.

I personally felt more comfortable getting a stamp in my passport at an INFOPASS than using the letter for the cruise. The agent gave me one, although he said the letter would've been just fine. There's just so much gray area.

I also just went back to Canada for Christmas and used the stamp at Pearson coming back. I had to go through secondary and luckily JUST made my flight (left ourselves 2 hours, should've probably left 3). So just make sure you give yourself enough travel time to go through customs if travelling with the letter or stamp since they make you go into secondary.

Just when I thought it was getting easier to cross back into the US, I had to go into secondary again!

Hopefully I'll get my new card soon.

I am starting to think about the ROC and getting as many ducks in a row as possible. DH and I still need to go to the water utility "in person together" with "our marriage certificate" to get his name added to the water bill. Been married almost 1.5 years and haven't had an opportunity to take care of this but I want to have it done for ROC.

So if the green card expires while we wait for processing, it shouldn't be a big deal for my DH to keep working and getting paid? We did the K-1 visa and the interview officer said we needed to wait until 2 years of marriage had passed, then apply, but how can I find out how long processing is taking for a ROC from Michigan?

You need to apply for ROC 90 days before the expiration of your greencard. You either apply to Vermont or California (similar to the K1) and you can check out the Removal of Conditions forum area to track how long it's taking for the different service centers. California is much faster than Vermont. I'm not sure where Michigan sends their applications.

No need to do anything about an EAD or your employer. My expiry date has come and gone and my employer hasn't asked for anything. My husband (who works in HR) said that companies only need to re-verify visas and EADs on expiry, but not a greencard, even if it was a 2 year greencard.

I'm in Canada now and still waiting for ROC. I do have a I-551 stamp in my passport though because I was worried about a cruise I went on back in December. Which ended up being a good decision because there were no questions asked using the stamp to get back into the US.

In a few weeks it'll be 5 months of waiting for me.... I'm anticipating a 7-8 month wait.

Thank you Sapphire for your response! Calmed my nerves a little! I've worked for this employer for a year and a half. Long story short they have high expectations above the standard for the field and my impression it's in every department, it was explained in orientation. So I guess we will see, I dont have time for an Infopass appointment honestly but if that what it comes to...

Well, they also have to follow the laws with this kind of stuff and in that regards you're fine. They can't technically ask you specific documents, they can ask you to verify your status so as long as you do that with your letter, they really shouldn't give you a hard time! And as for Infopass, not sure about your city and how far it is for you, but I was able to get an appointment at 7:50 a.m. in NYC and was in and out in about 30 minutes or so. It was pretty painless (I was expecting much much worse!!).

Sent off ROC in September! I didnt think id be this nuts with the waiting... AOS was quick, im worried mine will take 6 months:( My GC expires on the 14th, a month ago i sent HR at my work a copy of my extension letter and a letter attached, I havent heard anything since but I have this feeling they will want something more than that come the day after my gc expires.

What can they do? E verify me? What if the system shows something different? All I can do is make infopass appointment for I 551 stamp? Really cannot afford a lapse in my job.

8 sept filers have already been approved....

I did not send affadavits with my package but a whole bunch of joint stuff and a pictures of us at our wedding and since then. My husband is military ive heard of people getting FBI interviews if their SO is military....

Ahhhck!!!!

My husband works in HR and he said that companies don't have to re verify a green card, only work permits. So they shouldn't require anything from you. If it's a new job, the expired greencard and letter should work. If you're worried, make an Infopass and get a stamp. I did because I was worried about the cruise I went on and documentation. My employer hasn't asked me for a new greencard and mine expired Nov. 9.

I filed back in August. I'm still waiting.... Vermont is taking 6-7 months right now! I'm guessing I'll get my card in March.

We sent a mix of financial/bank/retirement statements showing eachother as beneficiaries and showing a large amount of money in our joint names (we're saving for a house), a letter explaining why we don't have a joint lease/mortgage, joint insurance documents, affidavits from friends, tons of receipts from vacations/trips we've taken together, a couple photos, and various other documents showing both our names on things.

I'm hoping our financial documents will be the most compelling since we have a lot invested in savings/retirement that we both share.

CanadaThe Vent Part Quatre

Interesting. i wonder if thats why this year im breaking out like mad. and not just facial acne but i get these itchy pimple like things all over my shouldres and arms. both my dogs have developed allergies with severe scratching biting fur off in the spring now too. i used to be only alergic to trees up north ya know pollen. mebbie next time i see my doc i should get an allergy test. would explain alot!i mean i'm 38 and why the hell am i breaking out??

The interesting thing about a histamine intolerance is that its not really an allergy, so it won't come up in an allergy test. It's basically like being lactose intolerant and the only way to really know is by eating too much of something and then removing it from your diet and seeing if your symptoms go away. I've noticed that I'm the most itchy and get large hives when I eat a large amount of histamine rich foods in a short period of time and esp. when I drink alcohol, wine or beer mostly, at the same time. I have cut out daily coffee and soda and that alone has helped tremendously and at least allowed me most food without getting too itchy. I have also started to notice what foods give me hives vs. just getting itchy. I'm okay with leftovers, but spinach is always hives.

Other common things that people with histamine intolerances suffer from are bug bites (i always get eaten alive no matter what even when others are not) and less commonly a heart arythmia, which I have (and was discovered in my immigration medical funny enough!). I think the main side effects though are itching, hives, headaches and stomach aches on occasion.
SapphireDreamsFemaleCanada2012-05-23 18:56:00
CanadaThe Vent Part Quatre

My on going complaint are these freaken hives. I'm scratching myself raw :bonk: , I can't do much about it unless I wean Alexis and she is no where near ready for that. So I get to grin and bear it while I wait for her to self wean. I'm not sure what is the caused it this time.

So I recently noticed i have been getting a ton of hives, esp. in the spring during allergy season and I'm pretty sure it's because I have a histamine intolerance with good and then the histamine in the air around this time makes it worse.

I get hives when I eat a lot of foods with histamine and it comes and goes. Avocados, spinach and tomatoes and basically anything with preservatives (esp. things like lunch meat or pop) really make me itch. Histamine also grows on leftover foods, and I get itchy when I eat leftovers too. Mine comes and goes depending on how much i consumer, so I've never really been able to pinpoint it, but i'm almost positive it is because i'm histamine intolerant. I stopped eating many of the foods on the top 10 list and was perfectly fine.

A lot of the food is just really hard to avoid!!
