interesting read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a link to this article (I'm typing it out). It was in the Tuesday, November 27 issue of the New York Times.. Editorials/Letters section page A30. Author unknown (to me).

The Citizenship Surge

About the only point of agreement on immigration in this country is that newcomers who play by the rules - fill out their forms, pay their fees and wait their turn - are welcome. But that great American dogma is being sorely tested by the inability of the federal government's feeble citizenship agency to deal with a flood of applications that arose this summer.
The agency, Citizenship and Immigration Services, is telling legal immigrants that applications for citizenship and for residence visas filed after June 1 will take about 16 - 18 months to process. The agency was utterly unprepared for the surge, and so tens of thousands of Americans-in-waiting will have to keep on waiting. Many, gallingly, may have to sit out next November's election, even though that civic act was what prompted many of them to apply in the first place.
This was not supposed to happen. The director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Emilio Gonzalez, promised this summer that he era of bad, slow service was over. He said a whopping increase in fees that took effect July 30 - an average of about 66 percent across the board, with naturalization now costing $675 per person, up from $400 - was about to make his agency fit for the 21st century. Speaking to newly naturalized immigrants, Mr. Gonzalez promised immediate results.
One immediate result was entirely predictable: people rushed to get their paperwork in. The agency received nearly 2.5 million naturalization petitions and visa applications in July and August, more than double from those months last year. But Mr. Gonzalez's spokesman, Bill Wright, told Julia Preston in Friday's Times: "We certainly were surprised by such an immediate increase." Surprised and swamped. The agency's processing center in Vermont is only now acknowledging naturalization petitions that came in by July 30.
It's telling that we need to explain that this backlog is distinct from other backlogs that plague the citizenship agency. This is not the visa overload that causes people in some countries, like the Philippines and Mexico, to wait decades to enter legally. Those backlogs are caused by visa quotas that no one has seen fit to adjust. Nor are they the chronic delays in conducting criminal background checks that have kept thousands of immigrants in limbo for months, even years.
Many of those immigrants have given up on the agency and sought redress in the courts. There has been a spate of decisions by judges who found that delays by the Federal Bureau of Investigation are unreasonable - three years is too long to wait to have the government decide if you are a criminal - and have ordered the bureaucracy to do its job. Judge Nathaniel Gorton of the Federal District Court in Boston became so fed up last month with a delayed background check that he simply gave a plaintiff, Ahmed Dayisty, the oath of citizenship.
It should never have come to that. The country should summon the will, the resources and the basic administrative competence to carry out one of its most vital functions, the making of ne w citizens. Mr. Gonzalez's agency says that the new revenue will allow it to eventually add 1,500 employees to its work force, an increase of about 10 percent, and that staff members have volunteered to work overtime to handle the latest backlog.
The agency has made such vows before, and the voluntarism doesn't cut it. This is not a benefit car wash or a canned-food drive. Turning immigrants into citizens demands better than platitudes and broken promises.

Im almost sorry I called..... crying.gif crying.gif crying.gif

I got Officer Nancy...who seemed nice but seemed to have a different story. When I called the other day, she said the adjudicator had gotten my case...would be ordering name checks which take a few days and I'll hear shortly after that. THen I get these touches.

NOW today she said he's had it since NOVEMBER 21. That the touch today was simply an update to some data in the system, and that I should call back in 30 days. Many there are on vacation and that some work slower than others (BY AN ENTIRE MONTH??? WHERES MANAGEMENT???) . That it could still be 30 more days.....Ok Im officially broken. No more positive, no more anything. I dont get it....how can it go from a few days, anytime to up to 30 more days????? And now she says the NAME CHECKS are the LAST THING before they issue an approval.....Thats not how it sounded the other day...Im sooo confused.

Please don't let customer service screw with your emotions. Calling them only makes this worse. For all you know she just had a bug up her ### today. Hang in there. Don't plug into anything they say. The guy yesterday told me they are only on May applications. They don't know what they are talking about and it will only make you feel worse.

You are going to get yours so soon! good.gif

Im wondering if she got monitored giving out information she wasn't supposed to....Casue I got what many here consider "the scripted" 30 days call back thing...but thats NOT what she said the other day....I know that if I dont have noa2 by my 6 month time...Im taking action..of some sort..

My advice to everyone is to ignore Officer Nancy and all the rest of them. They are incorrect at least 50% of the time. Why even bother talking to them? If you have a real problem or have gone over the 6 month processing commitment I would recommend going directly to your elected representative and/or the ombudsman.

Its just so aggravating to think that everyone depends so much on these idiots in customer service and it really seems like they really cant give any real info that its the same thing we see on the screen and nothing more!!!!!

I think customer service is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have no clue what they are talking about...are they not hired to try to give customers information...why cant they say ..."hold on, im going to go see what is going on with your file" instead of " try in 60 days or you have not exceeded our commitment date" WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!

I'm running away from everybody who wants to say happy birthday to me!!!! hehehe! And for christmas since we have dinner at midnight, we wait for the 25th and the open gifts, I'm staying at home sleeping!!!! mad.gif

That reminds me to one of my aunts who HATES her bday! It was a couple of months ago and we had a surprise for her, we were gonna have a BBQ at my grandmother's house (where she lives) but another aunt ruin everything!!!! SHe called her to say happy birthday (what she told us not to do) and said we were coming over...
Anyways, we got there, the BBQ was ready on the backyard, we had a bday cake...after 10 minutes she was gone! hahaha! She left!!!! We couldn't not believe it!!! We had the cake, the food, drinks....of course we ate it all without her...hahaha! We left around 9pm and she was still out somewhere! hahaha! It was our fault though, she warned us what she was going to do blush.gif laughing.gif

Mirla you are not alone...i am going to stay home during the holidays...when i started the process i for sure thought i would have Leidy and Daniel here for the holidays and filled myself with illusions of putting up a tree together....ow that it does not seem possible, this Christmas will feel extra lonely!! sad.gif

It sucks! But what about your family? Don't you think they are gonna ask you to spend it with them? What's the tradition in Colombia? Like in Peru, stay up on the 24th till midnight, eat christmas dinner at 12 and then open the gifts? unsure.gif
I'm still wondering what my dad is gonna say when I tell him I'm not going anywhere tonight...haha! Cause every christmas dinner is at my grandmother's..... wacko.gif

Byron! You already got a huge christmas gift! Your approval!!!! Time will fly till Januray, believe me biggrin.gif

I just feel like it will be an empty feeling without Leidy around....I'll just stay home....I hope time flies!!!!

I agree...Its just frustrating to see people who work like they have no chance of losing their job and dont work hard at all...Likde they are God's gift to the company they work for

It really is not fair at all!!!!!

Their system is all F'd up!!!!!!!!!!!

How is it possible that a gov't agency has this much disorder????

If you ask me ...the level of work ethic in this country is going down the drains!!! When you go to a store and ask for help, you getit with an attitude!!!!
For instance last night was the second time i had problems with American Airlines in the last 3 months....the first i was in Colombia visiting Leidy and when i get to the airport, they say " sorry but the flight was overbooked and we dont have a seat for you for 24 hours " what a joke!!! I missed 2 days of work because of it!!!

Last night my connecting flight in Miami was supposed to depart for NY at 9:20 pm...I was in the Plane by 9:00...It didnt leave until 11:40!!!! First they saidthey apologized but that the plane wasnt properly loaded ( Luggage ) ok fine then they start olling towards a take off then stop...we stand there for like 40 minutes and they say..." Folks your not going to believe this but we have to return to the gate because we dont have the proper paperwrok to land in NY".....ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just seems like nobody works with passion anymore!!! I supervise a staff of 9 and maybe 3 of them are hard workers...i have to push and psh and push the others o work....I think that's the case with USCIS workers also....Like when i would call in the beginning of the process with the RFE trick or just for a question, its like i was scared cause of the damn attitude these people had!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like with my lawyer...when calling her its like i am an inconvenience to her...last i checked she works for me!!!!

Seriously , this country is going down the drain if it keeps going like this!!!!!!!
