United KingdomHi - New to VJ
Hi, I'm new here!! I've posted a thread in the K1 forum regarding forgetting to include our 'Letters of Intent to Marry' in our I-129F petition that we mailed to Vermont yesterday crying.gif

The advice I have had so far is to not bother trying to send them now seperately as they will never connect the two - we don't have a file numebr yet. I'm just worried how it will affect our application and how long it is likely to delay our approval. Has anyone else here done this before or know of anyone lese that did?

Also, as incredibly helpful as this site has been, i'm starting to find even more things to stress out about blink.gif , like writing on the back of the passport photos in black ink - I used a fine tip black sharpie as I thought that would count as felt??!!

We only got engaged on Tuesday and I just want to enjoy the moment without worrying about paperwork!! We've been together for 5 years now, I can't wait for the day we (hopefully) get approved!!

United KingdomCouple quick questions
I personally would get the Victoria line and get off at Oxford Circus just for the simple fact you won't have to faff around getting connecting lines. You can walk down Oxford Street and cut down a couple side streets to the embassy...it'll be a 5-10 minute walk. If you have never been to Oxford Street maybe get the connecting tubes....but you will still have to walk down the side streets to the embassy...and it will be no quicker...just get an A-Z for those....you can't miss the embassy though, its enormous biggrin.gif

Mine was issued in London cos I went to the Victoria passport office. But if you look on the photo page of your passport at the top it will say 'code' or 'issuing code', under this it should say GBR (Great Britain!!) if it was issued over here.

United KingdomDocumentary proof
Hi, so I have been reading the VJ guide and would like a little clarification please!

Once the NOA2 is received, it says the USC should send 'all originals of the documentary proof' to the beneficiary. So does that mean his original birth cert, passport etc, not copies? I already have a copy of the I-129F.

Also, for the financial documents, will a copy of his mortgage or house appraisal be good, a letter from his bank, a letter from his employer, this years and last years tax returns, his 401K stuff, 3 pay stubs, shares. Must these documents be originals or are capoies acceptable? Should he send anything else?? Thanks

This may or may not help. Check out your local independant electronic shops. I have one that the guy takes the picture with his digital camera and the software sizes the picture to US or UK specs, then it prints out of the free standing machine like they have in Boots. Its just a thought, good luck finding a place!

I hope they don't, no doubt the university would charge for that! I have the transcripts here plus my certificates.

They do charge for transcripts. I misplaced my first one and of course as soon as the copies arrived I found the originals. blush.gif

Even though I need to have a professional licence to be able to work in my field at the same level as I do here, I wasn't planning to have anything transcribed. Didn’t think it was necessary… Obviously wrong… but I just can't stress about that as well at the moment. One thing at the time... NOA2 first and maybe somewhere along the line, if I really need it... innocent.gif I suppose I'm hoping that if I were to find a job in my field, the employer should recognise at least one of the Unis I went to whistling.gif. I'll have to wait and see how that goes smile.gif. But I'm looking forward to my US government imposed "sabbatical" for a few months smile.gif.

haha, I swing from relishing the prospect to enforced time off work to worrying about the loss of income etc. I'm only getting mine translated by the way as the 'society' I have to join for licensing requires it, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Once this is done I then have to apply to join the society and this requires my CURRENT boss filling out forms and all sorts, so I have no choice but to get the ball rolling now.

I believe A-Levels are assesed similar to what US schools refer to as "advanced placement" tests in American high schools, which are tests you take as a high school student that can give you college credit. I took AP tests and entered college with about a semesters worth of credit, though I know of people who had more.

I don't think the UK BS/BA=US Masters since Masters degrees are 2 year courses in the US compared to typically one year course in the UK.

I think UK Masters (at least mine) was a minimum of 18 months for the first 2/3 of the course (up to Postgraduate Diploma level) and then you have up to 2 years to complete the dissertation, so its a minimum of 2.5 years. An English BSc/BA is typically 3 years here, sometimes 4, and some degrees have recently squished a 4 year degree into 3 years to attract more students, hence the long academic year (start early September and finsh at end of July). This is where the transcripts come in handy as it states the required minimum amount of hours etc along with the credits.

I entered college in the U.S. with jack sh!t, having left school in the UK with nothing at age 16. How? Because they saw the colour of my "international student rate" money, is how. wink.gif

Oh good, I was a bit worried they might be rubbish but it seems they (hopefully) are reputable. Don't be surprised if some of the companies want sealed transcripts from your universities and such, the few I looked at all did except the one i'm going for now (I hope, although there is a disclaimer they may ask for it later on).

Don't forget the Honours, that takes it to a whole new level wink.gif
A British Bsc (Hons) is not comparable to an American BS in terms of level. A reputable translation service will give you a document that shows your British qualification next to the appropriate American qualification by assessing various different things.

Its really hard, once I have this document, I then have to apply to the society that governs my field for them to then charge me hundreds more to sit thier exams, before I can pay them hundreds more to be registered!!

Have you looked into whether or not you are able to do the same job over there otherwise it may be a waste of money? My Aunt moved to NY many years ago and wasn't allowed to work as a teacher with British qualifications, she spent her time there getting a US BS in English! biggrin.gif

My degree is in Forensic Science and I really want to get into it (I don't do it at the moment) so it's probably better waiting to see what sort of jobs there are first before I get anything translated. I may have to be a US citizen for some jobs anyway.

Which companies have you looked at as I know there are various ones about?

EDIT: just saw the one you mentioned above.

Thats a coincidence! My aunt moved to NY as her then husband is a Forensic Scientist and worked for the government I think out there for 5 years. I wish I was still in touch with him as I could have possible given you some useful advice, darn!

I'm using this company to translate my qualifications:

www.ece.org

It asks for all of your school history, wnats faxed certificates, transcripts and professional society documents (if any). I will be sending mine on Monday.

I have read somewhere though that in a resume you don't usually include school qualifications if you're over 25? I have no idea if this is correct though.

I just saw a press release about the groundbreaking for the Raleigh office in July of 2007. It said the office would be opening in March of 2008, so maybe us eastern NC folks can get transferred to the Raleigh office!!! I might call the USCIS hotline and see if it has opened yet.

I must be behind the 8-ball...I had no idea they were opening an office in Raleigh. We're about to apply for AOS and this would be an absolute blessing, since 1) we live closer to Raleigh (eastern NC) and 2) I've never ONCE been to Charlotte!!!!, 3) the drive is at least half as short. Will look into some more since this is of particular interest to us!!!

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)Lawyer fees

we had a telephone consultation with Laurel Scott tonight, and she sounds terrific! I've been reading that people have been very pleased with her, but i want to ask a vulgar question: she quoted us a price of $5000 for preparation of our waiver---is that about average for lawyer services? do you get what you pay for (in other words do you get cheap service if you pay cheap money?)? and has anyone outside the US used Laurel; was it difficult having a lawyer so far away?

thanks for any input people might have!

anna

I don't know about the others here on VJ, but I think VJ is a GREAT help that is free of charge. If the main guides don't help you, ask a question in the forums like you have done. Most lawyers are not looking out for you and your interests. They spend little to no time actually on your case. The assembly and preparation of your paperwork is more than likely handled by an underpaid paralegal. The lawyer may have to sign the paid preparer thing on the last page of the I-129F or whatever form you are submitting, but that's probably about the extent of what the lawyer will do for you themselves. In my opinion, you could easily save yourself thousands of dollars just by asking questions on the forums here. We're not lawyers, but we are going through the same process you are going through, so we know what we've done and can possibly help you on your journey.

So, does the I-824 really take 6 months to process??

YES, it may take up to 6 months to get the I-824 processed.....

My I-130 was approved last September by USCIS, it was then sent to the NATIONAL RECORDS CENTER instead of NVC.
It took my congressman from October of 2008 until March of 2009 to locate it for me. To make a long story short, I had to file a I-824 and send $340.00 to get it "released" from NRC. It was then I was told that it would take 6 months for them to process my I-824.

Yeah, we been kicked in the ### a few times already, but what to heck, we will win in the end, may take a while but sooner or later they have to run out of hoops for us to jump through. One saving grace we have right now is my congressman, since I talked to his staff, they have bent over backwards for my wife and myself. I can't say enough good about his staff.

I had an attorney since late 2004 when we first met.
He helped with the annulment, our marriage, I-130, I-485, work authorization cards ( 3 of them ) and finally when she was sent home, the attorney and I met, talked for quite a while, I wrote him a big fat check for the up coming help....... he then moved on, quit his attorney business and moved on...... I learned this from my congressman, who is also helping me on this case. So right now, I don't have much faith in attorneys any more......

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)Sending wife back to Philippines
You are not alone.......
I had to send my wife back to the Philippines last October for the same stuff.

She came over on a K-3. On her first night here, her husband told her he was already married to an American woman and she was to be his SECOND wife. She went to stay with her sister and that is when I met her, she got an annulment from him and we married after that. After the wedding, we submitted the papers to USCIS and went through all the hoops and was finally told they denied the I-485, and she had 30 days to "voluntary depart" American soil.
We started the process again, and are at the NVC stage now, We think her interview will be near the end of the year, and then we will know if she is placed on a ban for "overstay"

From what I can gather, the "overstay" started the day of her annulment, and ended the day USCIS received her I-485. In our case that was exactly 200 days which will put her on a 3 year ban.

congratulations on your approval, from what I hear, an approval for a 601 is hard in Manila.

If I may ask, what was the reason for needing a I-601 in the first place?

The only reason I ask is my wife and I may need to do that process for an over stay on her visa.
