Such a shame we can't get this subject pinned....it is so crucial, London is woeful in giving this info out clearly from the beginning of the process and often causes people delays/last minute panics.

Just to add....I know pets are important in peoples lives, but maybe it sacrificing that pinned thread for this information would serve better for people visa journeys? Just a thought.

I agree, I have even debated requesting a more in-depth K2/AOS section on here for a while, it would be so incredibly helpful.

United KingdomParental Responsibility Info
I have just spoken to the Principle Registry of the Family Division's manager. My advice to anyone considering getting a search for prental responsibility is not to phone them, they will chew your ear off with the law!!

Just an update, the price for a 'search' on parental responsibility will now set you back £40 wacko.gif . You cannot order it online or over the phone. I was told to post a cheque or postal order only, for £40 to 'HMCS' with a written request stating you want them to search for any parental responsibilty agreements in place and include the childs full name, date of birth and both parents full names to:

PRFD
42-49 High Holborn
London
WC1V 6NP

Just a quick mention...the manager would not stop whittling on about in English law a mother ALWAYS has parental responsibility until and unless it is over-ruled by law. There is no point searching under the mothers details for parental responsibility therefore, as it goes without saying. You must request a search under the FATHERS name as they can only have parental responsibility if it has been agreed by the courts. She warned me that occasionally mothers signatures have been forged to give parental responsibility to the father blink.gif

United KingdomStudent loan overseas income assessment form

Ok can anyone help me on how you fill out the income part? What do I tick for section B and then what do I put in C?

http://www.studentlo...B VERSION_0.PDF

What you tick in section B depends on your circumstances. For my first year in the States I wasn't expecting to work so I ticked travelling abroad and included a letter to say I would be staying with family so had no expenses. If you won't be working or have a spouse/family that will support you I suggest getting them to write a letter to state they are doing so. The following year I filled another out and as I am working I filled it out accordingly and sent copies of my payslips.

United KingdomAnyone wish they were back in the UK

Better than McVities?! Blasphemy! :o

Hehe. I'd be willing to give them a try! Unfortunately it doesn't look as if there are any Aldi stores within a couple of hundred miles of me!

(It's probably a good thing for my waistline that so many delicious British desserts and chocolates aren't available in the US).

I feel the same...I went from a true choc-a-holic to rarely eating any these days! And cake....the selection here is abysmal.....apart from the cheesecake....thats the best here!

United KingdomAnyone wish they were back in the UK

If you have a CostPlus World Market near you, they sell Malteasers and Flakes, and I think Crunchies too! And they'll be a little cheaper than most British stores. :)

Now, next we need to get shops to start stocking Wispas and Jaffa Cakes...

I was scared to pay with cash for months upon first arriving in the US, because I nearly always forgot about adding tax.

Do you have an Aldi store near you? They sell their own brand of jaffa cakes that are as good as if not better than McVities! They're a German chain so all their chocolate is delicious.....thats where I get mine from between trips to my nearest World Market. :star:

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusNeed CHEAPEST room in Moscow- 2/3 nights.

Hi folks.
We need to know where YOUR fiancee stayed in Moscow when she went for HER interview. Everyone here probably knows how expensive rooms in Moscow are, and we need the CHEAPEST! Our budget is so tight right now, it's insane. Albina and Nastia will arrive at Kazanskaya on 4/9, and have their interview on 4/11. Seriously- UNDER $100 American/night.
Thanks everyone!
Tim

Probably am being fecetious (sp??) here, but are there any public camping areas in any of the Moscow parks? If I could camp with my fiancee in or near Manila while waiting for her interview, we would both be very happy. Then again, we both like the outdoors and we haven't gone camping together yet...and of course, that's not for everybody. But perhaps something on the outskirts of Moscow might be cheaper? Does he/she have any long lost uncles, cousins or other relatives he/she could stay with in Moscow?

United KingdomHow do British qualifications translate?
Don't forget the Honours, that takes it to a whole new level wink.gif
A British Bsc (Hons) is not comparable to an American BS in terms of level. A reputable translation service will give you a document that shows your British qualification next to the appropriate American qualification by assessing various different things.

Its really hard, once I have this document, I then have to apply to the society that governs my field for them to then charge me hundreds more to sit thier exams, before I can pay them hundreds more to be registered!!

Have you looked into whether or not you are able to do the same job over there otherwise it may be a waste of money? My Aunt moved to NY many years ago and wasn't allowed to work as a teacher with British qualifications, she spent her time there getting a US BS in English! biggrin.gif

So is it worth getting a 'bog standard' BSc (Hons) translated?

Haha biggrin.gif !! Your bog standard British degree is worth alot translated, its more like an American Masters, like the previous poster said. However, I am about to lay down $300 (including postage) to get my qualifications 'translated'. I've got no choice though as I work in an industry that is regulated.

I've read that 5 GCSE's are the equivalent to a High School Diploma. Also, and I don't know how accurate this is...many moons ago when I was doing my A Levels, my tutor was on an international board for the subject, and he said that one A level is the equivalent to a US degree.....whether he meant associates i'm not sure...but that would be my guess.

Try googling it, I found something a while back about school qualifications and stuff, it may gove you a better idea of the US equivalent.

United KingdomHow do British qualifications translate?
I have been advised to use a professional 'translation of foreign transcript' company. I'm not sure if that is the correct term but there are many such companies in the USA that literally 'translate' our qualifications and produce a document with the American equivalne t qualifications. Obviously it costs quite a bit! You will need to be able to fax all of your certificates, transcripts and possibly the curriculum/details of hours studied etc to them.

I only found this out as I am a registered professional and will need to be registered with the American equivalent to work out there also. Good luck!

You can do it, just practice alot.

I know how your feel though. When I finally drove in the UK alone, I had to talk out loud to myself. Ok, when I turn this corner I'm going to go into that lane. This is a roundabout, I have to go round to the left. Once I'm on the roundabout, the lorry hauling it up on the next road is going to wait for me because I'm already on the roundabout, and he's not. It's bloody frightening!

I don't think I have a choice, where i'm going theres no public transport so i'll just have to get used to the idea....I just hope I don't have to learn in a shared car with kids from school!!! blush.gif laughing.gif

Its just off Oxford street for christs sake, it couldn't be easier to get to! Its the most famous and easy to find street in the whole country! London transport is fantastic, I have got to the grand old age of 32 without getting a driving license because of it!

Is he very young? I just can't fathom what his reasons are? I don't want to pry (well actually I do, no point lying) but have you got a very well established relationship and has he made much effort up to now to visit you, keep in touch etc etc? And does he live with his mother? Those apron strings need to be well and truly severed if he does!

I'm waiting for mine too...to be honest I don't know how long to expect to wait? I don't know how it works after NOA2....we haven't even had the paper copy of that either! Does that come from USCIS or NVC? And when people say they can see that its been sent from NVC to embassy, just how do they know?? helpsmilie.gif

The NOA2 comes from USCIS, if you don't receive it within a couple of weeks of your date then start chasing them as you need it for AOS and its very costly to get a replacement.

You can ring the NVC 1-603-334-0700 press 1 and 5 to get to an operator. Give them your USCIS case number and they will tell you if you have a case number allocated and whether it has left the NVC for London.

Once it has left the NVC you can start ringing DoS to find out its status with the embassy 1-202-663-1225 press 0 then 1 to get the operator

Thanks for the info good.gif

United KingdomDoes my 11 year old need to have the Medical too?
As far as the NHS is concerned (or at least the hospitals I have worked at) a male Dr or healthcare professional will not do any intimate examinations (breasts or downstairs!) without a female chaperone, simply for fear of litigation.

Hey, I examine womans bits all day long at work, I guess its only fair I get a tate of my own medicine biggrin.gif

United KingdomDoes my 11 year old need to have the Medical too?
QUOTE (Magenta @ Mar 1 2009, 04:04 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
First of all, don't get the vaccinations done at the medical. It costs WAY too much. Go to your local GP's office beforehand and make an appointment with the nurse practitioner. She can look over your records and give you the vaccinations you need. Your child will need the HepB vaccination and the NHS does not give this out for free. However, they charge less than the medical doctors.

I paid 25 quid for the course of 3 shots for my son (over the course of 3 months). The medical will accept you having started the course (so you don't have to wait until the course is finished - that can be done after the medical).

Then, you bring a copy of the vaccination records with you to the medical (make sure the nurse has signed and dated it). That should save you a fair few quid.

Your child will have to have a medical, although it isn't as extensive as with an adult. They don't have to have an x-ray, HIV/syphilis tests, nor do they have to flash their "bits" at the doctor to prove they're male or female!

Good luck!

Thanks Nick and Magenta. I'm assuming the 'bits flashing' part is a joke laughing.gif Or do I need to book in for a bikini wax too laughing.gif

Ok, thanks. So double the expense too huh?? I know the medical costs a bit less for kids....but its still all going to add up especially with the vaccinations. I guess all will be explained when I get packet 3.....does everyone wait for packet three or just go ahead and send off the forms once they know London has received the case as they are on their website anyway?
