Maria,
Disregard the statements that you need to send or bring the DS-230 and DS-2001 if you are doing
a CR-1 immigrant visa. I cannot speak on a K-1, but for a CR-1 you send the forms to the NVC along with
a copy of your husband bio page from his passport and 2 passport style photos.
When we had our interview I did not need any documents as they had them all, but still bring them just in case
along with any other additional proof of an ongoing relationship.
The Consul officer did not even ask to see any pictures, although I had them just in case they were needed.
Again I bid you the best.

They will accept online certificates. I was just approved on July 11th and I used them.
You must print the authentication page also.
I was unsure just as you so I sent an email to the Consulate and inquired of them and they replied
that they do accept them. I attached this email in my NVC DS-230 packet and was never asked about it.
If you are still uncertain do as I did, email the Consul and annex the email in your submissions.
I wish you the best.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)power of attorney question
Hello All,

I am the USC living here in the USA, my wife is in the Philippines, I just received the first package from NVC for our IR-1.

I also received the package for my wife.

Instead of sending it to her to fill out and then sending it back, is it possible to just let her fill out a "power of attorney" form and send that to me, so I can fill the forms out and sign them instead of her?
Has anyone else tried this route, and does NVC accept this?

I am really not in a big hurry to get through NVC, but I do have a mis-trust for the Philippine mail system. She has received less than half of the letters I sent her.

Thanks,
rujan

Do u mean a I-130 she filed 7 years ago?

When was the last contact with NVC? You need to be on the phone to them.

The Immigration Visa fee is $230 per applicant. And the $88 for Affidavit of support paid just once for all 3.

Is your wife a US citizen now?

A side note please report the lawyer to the ABA of your state. That is criminal what he did.

According to both my fieance & the lady at the Embassy, she filed for an I140 (from what I can remember) She is being sponsored by a Medical firm in NH. But there is a twist to all of this. Some how in her petition, she is able to file for full immigration status for both her & the girls. Once they are here in the states, and after she completes her contract with the firm, she can apply for citizenship for the thre of them.

You mentioned something about reporting the Lawyer to someone? to who & how ? I'm personnally tempted to making the trip to NY and give this guy a knuckle sandwich.

She was asking me last night, she was wondering, while she is waiting for her visa, can she & the girls apply for a tourist visa so as to come & see our new home here in NC without hurting her status or application?

I will be heading back to the States tonight so it may be a day or two b4 I can respond. So again, thank you in advance.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Frustrated & Concerned

Hi all,

Hopefully "someone here" can help shed some light on our current situation as it seems as though we;ve not only hit a brick wall, but also getting the run around.

As some of you may know, my gal is from the Philippines. She filed for an I-140 about 6 years ago after being promised a job with a medical firm in NH. Instead of just doing the work visa, she wanted to also bring her 2 girls, ages 17 & 13. She had hired a lawyer out of NY who is also filippino and up until recently, seem to have been doing a decent job. She paid him right at $4000.00, WHICH WAS SUPPOSE TO COVER EVERYTHING.

Well, now, almost 7 years later, we went to the US Embasy in Manila & they told us that the Nebraska Service center sent her lawyer an email to make payement for the immigration fees for her & her daughters back in May. & that is the last information that the embasy has. When she spoke to her lawyer back in February, he then told her that everything was out of his hands & that his job was done.

This is very upsetting not to mention extreamly aggrivating for both of us as we have absolutely no idea as to where to go from here. We have BOTH her Reciept  # in which she recieved way back when as well as her Case # from the NVC which starts with MNL.

Can & WILL SOMEONE PLEASE!!! help to point us in the right direction so as we can know & see where our case truely stands? For right now, as it stands, it sounds like that the NVC is awaiting the combined Lawyer immigrant Visa Affidavit of support fee  $405 immigrant visa fee for @ of her & her daughters & affidavit support fee of $65 @.  All of this was "Suppose" to have included in what we've already paid to the Lawyer.

Where can we go on the web to research or see all of the info to her NVC Case #?

Thanks in advanced

Seems like everyone wants to route through NY.
NY has the worst (I think literally) flight delay/cancel rate.

Not only that but, they often require you to go from one Airport to another to get your connecting flight.... that would be out of the question. ( I did that myself last time returning home).

My fiancee routed through JFK with no problems. (So did I on a separate trip.)

I will admit, it's a pain in the @$$, but it's not such a pain that I'd avoid it if it saved me several hundred $$$$$$.

Did she have to go from say Lug to JFK, to catch her connection flight, thats the part that is a little crazy.
I notice some come into a third airport in north Jersey, that might be the way to go.

I have never paid more than 800 dollars for a round-trip ticket to russia. I've flown back and forth several times from three different US cities. Every time i flew to a european hub and then switched to a flight to petersburg. I usually just book through expedia. If you check different dates you'd be surprised as some are significantly cheaper than others. If i had flown the day before on this trip, i would have paid 200 dollars more.

Yes, but when looking at most online sites it is more expensive to book a flight originating in Russia than one that originates in US.

And flights from Pete seem to be cheaper than Moscow, often by a couple hundred dollars or more. Hmmmm...how much trouble would I be in if I told her she needed to take a train to St. Pete and catch her flight there? biggrin.gif

I thought flights origination from Moscow were cheaper, although I did a few checks and did not find much difference.
Natalia lives in St. Pet but would go to Moscow if it would help.

A guy who is moving to moscow told me a cheap one-way ticket can be bought from the delta window or office in moscow but that is the only way it can be bought.

Of course I know the "advance purchase" is the best way to get a better price but, I think it best to wait until she has the visa or at least approved before I buy.
I think the window is 2 weeks, if you don't buy 2 weeks out, it gets really expensive.

With everything that has been changing in airline travel lately, I wonder if anyone might have
advice on doing the logistics of travel when she and her Daughter come (hopefully) by the end of the month.

1. Is company offering a "deal" on one way fares. I know usually it is not much less to fly RT.

2. Is there any discount for 10 yr old kid?

3. Since I will be buying the ticket here, I am concerned about the PAPER TICKET hassle, how to get it to her.

She is in ST pet and will Depart from there so there is not problem with her going to the airport to get the paper tickets before hand if needed.

I just went through the same thing last month, I kept checking the embassy interview date list and not seeing her number posted I was really getting worried, as it turned out (at least in my case).
She somehow ended up with a "new" case number and had been on the list all along.

My GF called and got the answer, (new case number) I never even got a reply from my emails from Moscow.
I am told the 12 dollar phone call is worthless.

This plan was based around the scheme to get me to Move there... rather than wait for Appeals or any other paperwork.

blink.gif

So you wouldn't move to Russia if she didn't get the visa? Why not? And why would she have to come up with some scheme to get you there?

To all the newbies..... slim's tried and true method of weeding out the "schemers" is to offer, before they even talk about marriage and all that stuff, to move there to be with them in their city. Part of their life. Part of their every day normal been doing it since I was born, life.

See what they say then.

But if they're trying to "scheme" you into moving there... you've got a winner!!! Fill out some papers, it's Visa Time!

Slim, I have used this same method of "I plan to move to Russia".... and see what they say.

Natalia was very new at internet-dating, a girl that worked in the library told her about it and helped her post a profile on an independent site, so she never knew much about visa's and all that.
She was really surprised it took so long and as I said before I played up the possibility of not getting approved as an incentive to study english (although she did not really need incentive).

Would I have moved to Russia if it were the only way?
I am sure I would have but to be honest, I never gave it much thought, except to kid her about the subject a little.
I would not want to live in St. Petersburg because the weather is so bad, also, not sure I could make any money (even by Russian standards) over there.

Even so I hope that things turn out where *one day* we can move there to live, actually I prefer Ukraine but how to manage that... I don't know.

Well, this morning I called her and I am glad to report, she did pass the interview!

good.gif

She told me that she was surprised it was mostly young men waiting to be interviewed and a few woman.
As for what questions she said it was only three.
1.What is your fiances name?
2. Where did you meet him?
3. How long have you known him?

But the first thing he asked for was photos of us together.

One thing we did that worked out very good was, instead of using a hotel which can be quite expensive in Moscow, Natalia contacted one of the home-stays offered at
UNCLEPASHA.com
It was only like 40 or 50 bucks and the lady Valintina, made her feel very welcome to use anything in the flat they wanted as well as offered advice about metro and where to eat.
Also, although Natalia only paid for one night, after her embassy business she came back and hung out until about midnight when her train home left for home. (try that at a hotel)

She said the visa would be about 3 days, she made it sound like it would be to St. Pet by then but I think DHL in moscow will get it in 3 days and then one or 2 to arrive to her city.

We were both unsure if she should try to speak english or not at the interview so I suggested when the guy asked IF she spoke english to tell him a little and for him to ask questions in Russian and you answer in english, this worked very well.

I have to really hand it to her, when we first met we spoke maybe 95% russian... (even with my small vocabulary.)
I started her taking lessons from a tutor which was very reasonable in cost but half the time he was out of town, and everytime I told her to find a new person she never really did, I know why..... She is a little tight-wad, she hated to hand my money over at every lesson.
Instead she saw the book he was using to teach her from, she had me buy it on e-bay (five bucks) and send it to her, then she pretty much studied on her own.
Now the teacher wants to buy her "new" book from her! She plans to sell it to him for like 35.00 buy another one from e-bay when she gets here.

But as for her learning English....Very diligent, that girl is, every time we spoke on the phone she would read her lesson, with me correcting her pronunciations.
Of course I was kinda "pushin" her a little on the English by suggestion that she might get turned down at the interview if she did not speak some english. devil.gif
Couple that with her big interest to learn english and she did not need much prodding.
She really seems to be on a roll now, learning fast.

Now I am forgetting my Russian words even though I often answer her back in Russian to keep practice.

Well thats the latest.

Well in the morning (actually in just a few hours) Natalia will make her way up to the Embassy for her interview.

I guess I am a little nervous, not really that she will not "perform" well, I'm sure she will but that there will be a document snafu.

Has anyone every heard of a rejection from the moscow area before, I have read a lot of message boards over the years and I don't recall hearing of one.

Wow the Airfare thing has been killing me, I have found killer deals to fly "TO" Russia Round trip but when looking for a one-way ticket for her they have all been coming in around a grand per ticket at best between jan 15 to say the 30th.

Then I dug into some flagged info that I tuck away in a folder, whenever someone mentions a service or some other item that might be helpful someday.
I called a number out of Atlanta, spoke to a travel lady Natasha and she has me reserved for 2 tickets at less than half the lowest price I could find.
If this good deal materializes ... I will post her contact info.

Anyone know how long it typically takes to get visa-in-hand after approval?

Congrats on finding out and finally being able to make some plans. Good luck, and don't forget to get a copy of the DS-3025. I'll be watching for the "his interview's been over for like 20 minutes and still no word on if the visa was approved yet" thread.

Just kidding! Good luck and keep us posted or ask away with the next set of questions.

Speaking of that form... Natalia forgot to ask for a copy when she was there and when she later asked for it they told her "we can't do that".

I guess now it is securely tucked inside the sealed envelope.

Perhaps when she arrives in Atlanta she can ask them to copy it there?

I know she has her vaccination documents, just don't know if they are translated.

You can also find good deals if you buy the tickets in Russia rather than the States. Prices tend to be much lower when purchased by a Russian citizen.

I was certain this was the case but the problem I had was.... I was reluctant to have my Fiance buy two tickets on-line or even at a travel agency and accidently make a huge costly error, it is not hard to do, especially if you have never done it. On my first trip to see Natalia, I called Lufthanza and intended to combine a "to europe" special they were running ... with a connector to St Pet.

The price she gave me was a little cheaper than what I had found on line so I bought it, later I realized she never included the connector flight and evidently I did not pay closeneough attention when she read back the flight details. I guess what threw me off was she sold me a flight to Europe at 2x what the special was... what was about the cost to fly to St Pet.
Not to worry, I got my money back but it was not easy.

So anyway, I was reluctant to push that new experience on her so soon.

In fact, considering this morning she did not shut the gate all the way when she went to run and now my deaf Beagle has wondered off..... maybe playing it safe buyin the tix myself was a good Idea

Interesting. When I bought the tickets for Natasha and Vika, Vika's fare (to my surprise) was some percentage of an adult fare. For the record, I did purchase them on Expedia.

Yes, but you purchased them at the same time from the same agent.

The trouble comes in when you buy the child fare later elsewhere because it must be on a paper ticket. The fare for the child is not actually a % based on the accompanying adult's ticket it is attached to (particularly relevant to infant under 2 without seat tickets), but rather on the adult fares available at the time & place of issue.

If you purchased the tickets on Expedia, you purchased them both from the same agent at the same time, and the conditions of my warning do not apply.

The tickets we bought via Natasha on Delta were E-tickets and the daughter at ten did get a discount and an e-ticket as well.

Not long ago, I found out how hard it is to find a reasonable airfare when your origination point is Russia instead of USA.

I searched every one of my typical search engines and the best I could come up with was $900 and that was one-way... off season. Thats almost double what I can usually find to fly to russia.

I had heard you can get a good price from the delta office in Moscow but only at the window, not via internet.

BAck in the summer time someone posted a contact number to a RW agent out of Atlanta who had gotten him good fares. I called and not only did she get a good price ( almost half what I could find) she could book the flight very quickly, usually in the USA the closer the flight is to the date of purchase the more it costs.

I would absolutely call her if you need to fly someone here and if you are flying there, you might want to give her a shot at it too.

Yes this is her first time "over here", it's been interesting for both of us, the things I thought she would like or take note of often were ho-hum and some every day things are what she took note of.

I made the mistake of showing her a free website that plays Russian movies, now it is 12;45 at night and she is giving me the "5 minutes more" refrain for the 3rd time. I can't complain through because she really puts herself out in every way to make me comfortable and make our home nice.

Well it's been about a month that Natalia has been here and today was the first time I got the calender down off the wall and started calculating how much time we have.

First I can say with 100% candor, Natalia is even more of a wonderful person that I knew her to be before. We have had not one problem but really this is a credit to her as she is such a warm understanding and caring person. She even insists on going to work with me to help me, I'm in the Kitchen remodel biz so it's no glamor and more words to learn.

Anyway, so I am wondering today..... "Whats the next step"?
We get married (bought the license today) and then file "adjustment of status"?
Certainly on a K-1, the wedding must take place within 90 days but does the paper work have to also be filed in this 90 day time period?

I hosted a couple of Ukraines at my house and the organization they came through gave them $25 a day to eat on. The first thing they wanted to do was go to the grocery store. After about 3 days, they felt it was cheaper to eat out than to buy food and cook it.

I think this is true very often but the food you end up eating is certainly the highest of fat content.

Someone brought up the issue of older RW always being fat (or nearly) and I think it is true, of the RW I see there (and RW here) many do in fact get fat.
Is anyones MIL an exception?

As one lady explained to me, RW expect to get fat when they enter that stage in life, it is normal for a woman to cling to fitness and beauty when she is young but all Russian woman go through a mental change at about 35, what was important before has changed to something else. In the same way a 22 yr old man dreads loosing his hair yet a 45 yr old man can accept it easier.

They say the best predictor of what your wife will look like tomorrow is "what does her mother look like now?"
Weren't all these round 47 yr old ladies once 47 kilo babes too?

Wonder how many guys would be "ok' with their wife sporting the bod of their mother inlaw?

If your girl reads this forum, we will understand if you speak in "safe" terms laughing.gif

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusEngagement Rings

However, this is changing. More and more Russian women are hoping (not expecting) for one if they have a Western fiancé. They've all seen enough Hollywood movies to know our tradition is to give one. Just be warned! smile.gif

As far as I know, an engagement ring is not part of the Russian tradition so I saw no need to "impose" my culture on her.

Obviously you are correct, but the truth is they see a lot of our traditions and customs on the big-screen.
Seems some Russian woman have no problem embracing the ones which come with a sparkle.... before they even get here.

Certainly in time the traditions will blend, I am looking forward to this as is she.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusPlaces to stay in Moscow for interview
If you really want to cut corners on the price tag in moscow, you can go to globalfreeloaders.com and there are a lot of folks there who will put folks up for free or cheap.

In fact, if you are the "personable type" you can travel anywhere and be hosted by locals who like to meet and get to know travelers.
The honor code says you will host others from time to time as well.

Unclepasha.com also has some "alternative" (cheap) contact info on his site.

I swear that guy has the strangest site I have ever been on, it's like a maze of old pages over lapping new ones, you never know where you end up following the navigation links.
Lots of odd yet interesting stuff though.

Isn't her patronymic her middle name? That's the way all my friends who emigrated from Russia have it.

Thanks for that input guys.
After trying to call the local department at Homeland and just getting a "Leave your message at the beep... we will get back to you" sorta recording, I decided to run over there (actually 25 minutes).
I see they close up shop at 2:00 everyday so that was a waste.

Even though I was married before, I don't recall how the wife got her name changed.

Can anyone tell me what is the proceedure. I thought when your got married the certificate would indicate the new legal name for the lady but mine does not say anything more than Danny X marries Natalia X.

I thought it might be a good idea to move her last name to a middle name... as she has no middle name chosen when we did the paperwork for the visa.

Since these days there is a wide range (into the absurd) about how or if a lady changes her name after marriage, where does one normally go to do this official Name change?

PS: slim, where does one find a civil surgeon?

Good question.
I was under the impression the Patroynomic was not an actual *middle name* but something else... of course we know it comes from her fathers first name but for some reason we decided to drop it all together and after marriage bump her last name to the middle name slot.

The only question has been...where to get this last name change done?
