K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresUK to USA - quickest way
Thanks for your reply...

Did you intend to stay in the US before you came over to visit?

-- We did not, no. We own a home, car - are involved members of our church etc all at home. We got a house sitter for the three months as well. We also brought our dog here to the US with us for this trip (it was too long to leave her) but prior to that, we went through the long and expensive process of getting her a 'European Pet Passport' which allows her to re-enter the UK without having to go through quarantine (this could be confirmed through our vet I presume).

Do you need to go back to England to take care of anything pressing?
-- No (other than talking to the parents - JUST KIDDING) - all of our bills are direct debited and our house sitter is enjoying using our house! (sidenote: we live in Northern Ireland (part of the UK) but that is no issue)

Do you have flexibility as to when your new jobs will start, and will your new employer have to get you a work visa?
Yes I have one hundred percent flexibility, it will wait for me (and my husband can start his straight away I assume). I am also assuming that once I was to be approved for a green card I could work, up until then we can manage on my husband's wage and we will initially be living with his parents (they have a basement apartment that we can use)

thanks smile.gif

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresUK to USA - quickest way
Hi All,

This site is so awesome, thank you to everyone for their valuable input, I have already gleaned a ton of information but I'm still totally confused as to what is the best way to proceed in my case (and I understand EVERYONE wants to get their visa through quickly, but I'll ask my question anyway..)

Here is the background:

-- I am a UK resident
-- I have been married for two and a half years to my American citizen Husband was approved for permanent residency to the UK in February of this year.

-- We're both 27 years old

-- We are currently half way into a 3 month stay with his parents in North Carolina.

A GREAT job opportunity for us both has come up and we have decided, while here, it is best that we move to the USA (something we have always known we would eventually do, but perhaps not this soon)

The jobs are ready now so we want to get me permission to stay here or leave and come back, as soon as is physically possible. We are due to leave the USA on July 9th.

What is the best way for me to go about getting residency, as a spouse, in the USA - do I have to go back to the UK or can I do it from here? If I do go back am I going to be stuck there for many months?

Thanks so much in advance,
Katie

Hi,
I am currently filling out my application for residence (adjustment to status) and it asks for my social security number - I was here in 2001 as a student (with a student visa) and in order to get a part time job I was issued a Tax ID Number..

Does anyone know if I should write this number in as my SSNumber or write N/A?

Thanks,

An individual taxpayer ID number is not a Social Security Number. If you have a SSN, it will not change, so list it. If only a tax id number, no need to list it when asked about SSN. It's not an SSN.

So, which do you have, SSN or ITIN?

I believe it to be an individual Taxpayer ID Number - and so I will not list it
Thanks smile.gif smile.gif

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionA little worried (Police Cert)

My fiance is a Filipina living in S. Korea. She also lived in Japan for a six month period after the age of 16. I've read many places that she doesn't need a police certificate unless she stayed more than 12 months in another country other than the country she is residing, which would be six months.

I read something on the Seoul consulate website that says this:

Police certificates from countries where the beneficiary has resided after the age of 16;

Now, I'm a little confused. We have an approved petition...has anyone dealt with this before or a situation similar? I don't want to get surprised by anything at her interview. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I lived all my live in Peru but 4 months in Venezuela (I was older than 16 years age).
I got my fiance visa and already married in USA, when I did my papers for the K1 Visa I mentioned that I lived also in Venezuela but never gave a Police Certificate from Venezuela, only from Peru, and it was ok.
Good luck!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionVisa Denied!!!!!!!!

Well they denied the Visa at the interview!!!! Reason: not enough documention proving we met before Aprii!!! We actually met in the summer of 2005 and provided 5 notarized affadvits stating so, plus phone bills, pictures from my recent trip to her country, diamond ring reciept etc etc etc. I can't believe this. My fiance saw me through a life threatening ilness at the begining of the year and a 5 month recovery and they question the validity of our relationship! I am beside myself.

If you think that it was not fair and you realy gave to the embassy all what it was requested, contact your USA Senator (by phone) and complain with him/her, they can contact the USA embassy and ask for an explanation. It realy works.
Good luck!

Hello and thanks for all the support on my last question, My new wife (Canadian) and I(American) have started compiling all of our forms and paperworks for the K-3 and are 1 week away from starting the process. Ny question is what would be the final cost of all this after its said and done? She has 2 children who will acompany her here in the States, we do anticipate around $1500 but not sure, an I am aware we have to travel to Montreal and the likes, but can someone give me a fair quote on just the paperwork?? Thanks again an Thank You for support good.gif

$355 a head to file the I-130. Then $1010 for wife and $1200 for kids to adjust status for the K3

More like $3,275 if I added correctly.
MUCH cheaper and MUCH better to go with the CR visas solo.

Ok then so this CR process is better and faster? What would the final cost be with this process?

My wife has 2 children under 14 yrs of age and they will be comming from canada with her here to America, my question is do we send just the one I-130 or do we have to have 3 seperate I-130's for her and 1 each for the children??? I was also told by a gentleman at the USCIS that after the I-130 returns as the NOA1 she is legal to come to America to stay with me until the rest of the processes are finished, is this true?

To be honest, I think the best thing to do in any recession or economic downturn is to reduce the amount of debt you owe.

Nick

Actually that is a much easier plan to follow "Before" a recession.
When things start getting tight.... paying off more than you owe (that month) is not so easy.

The only payment I have is my house and Van, I was thinking about paying off my van early but who knows... I might wish I had that $3500 to buy groceries (or even ammo smile.gif this time next year.

I look at being armed as "insurance".
IN all probability, we will never see such times nation wide but as we have seen it in places before.. we will no doubt see it again; Bad economy or good!

Depending on where you live, determines the need one might have for it.
If in a more urban area, being able to protect your food or other things might be a greater need than anything else.

I just recently found out you can buy ammunition on-line.
When the Obama inspired preemptive shoppers.... cool their heels, I may stock up on some rounds for the SKS. Right now they are selling out.
It's a reasonably priced round and a fun gun to shoot, so why not.

My other fun-gun is this old pump 22 gallery style gun. After I bought that, I quit lugging my shotgun when rabbit hunting. Sure there is a greater chance for a miss but it ups the "sport" part of it.

We're definitely not stocking food away, although I can see where it may be a good idea for some. Our family in Ethiopia is focused on saving as much money as they can (and we send money to help)...the food prices have gone through the roof...doubling, tripling. They live in the capital so there is food available, but price is the issue. Our family in the US is focusing on paying out/not using credit cards...and building emergency funds in the event of layoffs. We've cut back on travel plans and that's about it.

The idea of stocking-up on foods is two fold.
1. In case of future shortages.
As my MIL lives in St. Petersburg, this is not as likely as in some remote areas. (yet possible)
2. Head off buying later at highly inflated Prices.

She is on a pension, as you can imagine her income is small.

As we all have watched the fragile state of the economy both in the USA and especially in the FSU
I wonder if those who have family (or others) over there... if they have taken or thought to taken any action .... considering what may be down the road.

From what my wife relays to me.. (from her reading the Russian news reports), The Govt is
of course say anything and every thing to head off panic or any such reaction.

a number of weeks ago, I told my MIL to start buying non perishable items, a few with each trip to the Market and start storing them.

Since one never knows what might unfold in the next few months to years, I would think this is a minimal and prudent move as prices and possibly availability might be a reality.

Has anyone given this consideration or taken any actions?

Of course the question always remains.... "what would you do for income" over there?

Sure some of you guys are close to retirement .... and others are amazingly wealthy... but does anyone have any hopes of actually earning anything close to a living over there (assuming the economy picks up)?

I talked to one USC a year or so back, he was starting a car rental biz which catered to the wealthy. I have not heard from him since but I do wonder how it panned out.

I know of another guy living in Ukraine who has hopes to start a lawn-care type service which seems like a lame idea to me.

Of course english tutor is most often the path most people take, unless they are already hooked up with a firm which has work for them in Russia.

good point. The jobs that I would want require citizenship which takes time. i could work in as a hitman or maybe resurrect the KGB, Russia is easy like that in the movies

I would consider it, but probably as a retirement type thing.
Problem is, my wife is from St petersburg.... and they have lousy weather. It would be much more appealing if her flat was say in... Sochi or some other area.

I would like to get my Mother in law a visa for a visit.
In the past I heard it was difficult now I hear it's not so hard, what are the steps involved?

I saw forms at the embasy website which are to be filled out on-line but only in English, would I need to get a translator to help MIL to do them? IS a invitation letter still being used?

Has anyone from Russian done this recently?

The sooner the better I can do this as airfares will be on the rise as spring approaches.

I have been searching for Russians in or around Jackson, MS. We have only met a couple and do not socialize with them. It would be great if there were some in this area. It is hard since there is not a Russian community here. Anyone out there?
Thanks.

I found at least 2 Orthodox Churches in your state, at Clinton and McComb, not sure if they are close to you but it is a start.
Also you can google "Slavic churches" which will lead you to many protestant churches catering to Russian speakers.
Where I live in Charlotte we have a number of Russian churches as well as "European food stores" which always seem to be run by russians.

It seems we can hardly go out without running into Russians, (today at the library).
A few years ago (when I was not aware) I hardly saw any.
Russians seem very reluctant to just start talking to other Russians they bump into, but if I break the ice, in 2 minutes they are trading phone numbers.

My wife has met a number of local Russian through a Russian (facebook type) site.
www.odnoklassniki.ru (I think thats it)

To be honest some Russians you will meet .... (Hmmm...how to put this...)
Be careful, not everyone is concerned with you having a happy marriage.

You can also meet guys (it's mostly guys) who married Russian ladies on message boards such as RUADVENTURES.com (there are a few others) There are bound to be some guys from your area.

I met a few Russian/ american couples this way and they has been good company.

You can also try Meetup.com to locate Russian speakers in your area. We did have a Russian language group here, but it kinda fizzled out.

If I were you I would try to locate Russian/ American couples (unless you speak Russian).
For a number of reasons,
good luck.

Typically the cheapest way to go is to locate a individual who does this as a side line biz.

I used a lady like this once in St Pet (yes I admit, I sent flowers on womensDay once).

The hard part is transferring payment. This lady had an American Boyfriend and I sent the money to his USA address. They are broke up now so I don't know how she takes payment if she is still doing it.

With my MIL in St pet, I forward the flower money to her via my check-card.
Of course if my wife and I get divorced wink.gif ... the MIL looses her flower delivery business.

You guys sure are romantic. I don't think I ever sent my fiancee flowers, not even once.

Just remember, whatever you do now (campaign promises) has to be "outdone" after she gets here. (Elected to office.)

I also like to play the "only one holiday" thing. "Either you can have Russian holidays or American holidays, you can't have both." It's too expensive to buy flowers on Valentines AND Woman's Day, they're so close together. "One or the other, honey. Which one do you want." Now that's romance!

And I thought I was the only one with enough backbone to say that!
-------------
If you occasion has not passed, my Mother in law will be glad to buy some nice flowers and make delivery for a reasonable fee.
Let me know.

PS: she also has a room for rent

All of a sudden, Svetlana decides that she misses teaching (she was an English teacher in Saint-Petersburg).

But are teaching jobs possible for Russians to whom English is a second language? What about translation jobs?

She doesn't think she is qualified to teach English to students who grew up speaking it. And of course, there is little demand for Russian teachers.

We are currently having her diploma evaluated by a professional company that specializes in those things, but I have no idea what will come out of it.

I want her to be pro-active in seeking any opportunities that may exist, but frankly, we do not really know where to get started.

I hear a number of teachers with a pretty strong spanish accent working at the school, I would think she could find work teaching in some capacity.

You mentioned she is getting her diploma evaluated; I know a guy who was a doctor in Ukraine or Russia, he has been working as a carpenter since arriving in the USA (more than 5 years ago), as this line of work is now hurtin, I asked him why not go into Nursing, maybe some of his education will help speed things up.
What do you know about getting his prior medical training evaluated? What is the service your wife is using?
Any info anyone has would be helpful, that would be great.

Speaking of learning a foreign language, I stumbled upon this sight which offers a number of different free lessons in many languages.
My preferred method is to "listen and repeat" but I actually found one (of the several) styles which I can see is very helpful to learn to READ russian.
http://www.ukindia.com/zip/zru1.htm

Now the parent site which this lesson comes from is www.word2word.com
They also have an fairly good section to learn English... 4 russian speakers.

If you know anyone trying to learn any language, this seems to be a great free site.

I don't recommend it either, but you did suggest that more immersion was better laughing.gif Refusing to speak Russian to the guy at all does seem like a fairly irritating way to teach him (to me) also - however fast he learns that way.

Immersion is how my linguistics school in did it. For 9 hours a day you couldn't not speak English only you "new" language. And they forced you to ask things so there was no motioning or grunting either. In all honesty.. it is the best way to learn but you need serious passion to make it through that.

What... Only 9 hours a day???
When you get into the "MOX English by immersion Program" it's 25 hours a day, you'd better not even utter a Russian word during sex!

My wife had the most success (while living in Russia) with a tutor.
She first signed up for a class but soon realized the student teachers were at the student level themselves when they couldn't answer questions very well.

She then went to a tutor, I asked for his phone number to call and make sure the guy could speak english. He was an old guy that once lived in the USA and seemed profic. in language.
Of course you don't want the tutor to know you are paying for part or all of the lessons as they bound to be higher in price.
My wife paid, I think $10.00 a lesson in Saint petersburg.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusHow hard was it for your spouse to learn English? How did you help?
My wife has been here for a year and her progress is or seems slow to me... but then I talk to other Russians who have been here for like 5 years and I guess she is doing okay compared to them.

One bad habit I have is to used "code language" when we talk.. safe words I know she will understand even if a more accurate unknown word should be used.
I have to break this habit.

Another thing I need to do is hide this one phrase-type book she studies out of every day.
Good Lord she has been here a year and is not halfway through it.
We recently started getting kids book from the library, sometimes I have to bully her into reading them but when she does she will copy down all the words she doesn't know on a paper and translate for study them.

Some times the silliest phrases will get stuck in her head, such as.
"Take it easy Cowboy" tongue_ss.gif I have to hear this every time I try to get her to hurry up.
Perhaps another reason to get rid of the Phrase book. tongue.gif

I tend to believe different people learn better in different methods.
For me the "stickies" notes would be very helpful and a way to get vocabulary up, which I think is a key to getting "in the game".
Another for me is Repetition, if my wonderful wife would actually use simple conversations I would learn them in no time.

It might be helpful if anyone knows links to web-sites (or products) they think might be helpful to others... to post'em.
Perhaps either to learn Russian or English.

What I would do is use Google to locate message boards which deal directly with this topic.

I had a customer who asked me about it and that night I did exactly that, I found a number of boards which could help you get in contact with agencies and can give you connections to all the things that many of these agencies soak you for.

Experience in your best teacher so learn from others.
If you pic an agency at random they will milk you at every step along the way.

Even through Youtube you can meet experienced people.

My wife works with me but if not, I know she would go bonkers without a job as she does not like being alone at home.
Some others here have offered some good suggestions, I know of at least one woman from Ukraine... whose english is so-so, she works at a Child care place, the pay is small and interaction is not as good as working retail but it's a possibility if she likes kids.

My Daughter put herself through School doing Nanny work. She is getting like 12-13 and hour to basically baby sit.
There are websites you can sign up on that give your info to families interested but you can also look on Craigslist.org
In fact she might want to comb through the many local jobs posted there.

You know, I had all these AIRPORT NIGHTMARE stories in mind when we changed my wifes name (after marriage).

My great idea was to put her Russian last-name as her middle name and my last name of course as her last name.
This worked great everywhere but when we went for her AOS interview. They said her prior last name could not be used as a middle name.
Instead she could use her fathers firstname as in her RU passport.

Now her SSN had to be changed and her Drivers License changed to match the greencard.

If they are selling contact info, that would seem like the way to go rather than get on the "pay per-use" circle.

This guy has a survival/ self reliance school and posted vids in this nature into the hundreds on many topics.
He just recently got signed by Discovery channel" to do some surviver type shows so you might see him there.
Unfortunately they are requiring him to take down all vids on youtube so if they are still up today... they won't be much longer.

The unique thing about the guy is, he will not edit out his mistakes or pretend he knows everything, he credits other Youtube posters who improve on his ideas.

Think he's from Ohio and he does do gun shows.

* I meant to post this is "off topic".
