Can someone with children who has been interviewed recently provide some insight?

Chester,

Hey would you like to post a list of all the documents that you are taking to the interview? That way some of us here can review anything that you may have forgotten. A checklist sort of speak of all documents, wether or not you have them 'autenticadas', 'notarized', etc. This will help you out a lot. Sometimes we think we have everything and the 1 minor thing we may forget. Just a suggestion.

Man this group is just awesome! Especially you Lucho my friend.

I've been so busy at work trying to get all my stuff finished before I disappear for two weeks.

======================
Documents SHE has at hand -

Passports - Copies of the photo page (notarizado)
Registro Civil - Notarized copies (we have atleast 3 notarized copies )
Fe de Bautismo - Authenticated by the "cura" and also notarized ( 3 copies)
Photos of 5x5 cm - 10 copies
Colombia Pasado Judicial - Librete Verde - Original
DAS Recordo de Migratrio -- Sealed envelope

Photocopy of the original DS-230 submission
Copies of MY G325A
Copies of HER G325A
Copies of the I-129F
DS-156K and photocopies

Vaccination cards original (we're missing a few - but those are being done today)

==================
Documents I HAVE with ME:

I-134 and a Jurat from the Notary and two photocopies
Original Letter from my employer and two photocopies
Original Financial Investment letters from my bank and two photocopies

Photocopies of my "DAS stamps" on my passport

About 22 colored photos arranged in a small notebook

Although she has not stayed in Ecuador for more than 6 months at any given time, the accumulated stay over the last 5 years is over 6 months. I am paying very "dearly" to have someone get her the Certificado de Policia in Ecuador. I'm playing it safe, however, we won't have the document till maybe Tuesday at our hands in Bogota.

I'm flying down on Saturday, Sept 1.
Tuesday Sep 4 - LAB work and in the afternoon is the medical exam with the doctor.
Thursday - D-day

I'm taking tomorrow off from work to do last minute preparations at the house, get my hair done, my nails biggrin.gif

To everyone, I really appreciate all the support that you have given us. I calm at this moment but I am also confident that our prayers have not fallen on deaf ears. I hope that the termination of this process will begin the next stage of our lives being together as a couple.

I have some questions regarding the preparations for the day of the interview.

1. It says on Packet 4 instructions to include "Forma DS230 Part 1". We already faxed this to the embassy and we have a photocopy of it. Do we just make copies of it or fill out a "new one"

2. Questions on the DS-156 - 22. When do you intend to Arrive in the US? (We put a date week after our interview date, is that ok or we say "As soon as visa is approved")

3. 26 - How long do you intend to stay in the US ? "Indefinite", "permanently"

4. 21 - Present Occupation - Since she runs a an Internet Cafe, we wrote "Indepeniente - Internet Cafe Propietaria". Is that ok?

5. I'm making sure DS-156 is printed front and back on the same page.

6. What's the deal with the vaccinations? We can get the ones she does not have in Buga and not from the doctor's office in Bogota. She will have the original vaccination report cards. It's a lot cheaper versus having them done in Bogota. I read something about the vaccinations need to have been applied in the last 8 days. I don't buy that, vaccinations are vaccinations for life.

7. DS-156 and the passport must be brought to the bank when making the payment, correct?

8. DS-156, Hoja de Cita should be brought to the LAB and Doctor's clinic, right?

That's all that I can think of right now, I'm sure there will be more.

Monica never received Packet 3 in the mail. Packet 4 was claimed by a friend last Thursday, Aug 23 and arrived by Servientrega today at her house.

Luis, I really didnt understand your question about the birth certificate. Are you talking about the marginal notes?? I will ask Wendy to show me her registro civil. I'll get back to you later on that.

For Ecuador they don't issue Police Certificates for foreigners. She never really "lived" in Ecuador, but her total stay cumulative in over 5 years is over 6 months. I was taking the precautions, better safe than sorry.

Accumulative time period? That doesn't make any sense.

For example , I have stayed in the Netherlands over the last 5 years with an accumulative stay of over 6 months. All multiple visits of 4 weeks each. I do understand what your saying Buck, but I can't put logic on it why no official 'wording' is made available by the embassy.

Now this has me concerned, but I will still push forward.

Chester,

I,m happy to see that you received a copy of packet 4...did Monica also receive her copies of packet 4 ?

Scott

Nopes, still waiting..... for ANY mail to arrive at her house.
We faxed a letter yesterday to the embassy. The embassy did call her this morning in Colombia that she can "fax" a notarized letter authorizing someone to pick it up. They also gave her an exact time 1 PM on next Tuesday, Aug 21.

And to all the new folks that joined the club, Welcome!!!

Yes, this is the norm. I suspect no one mentions it because usually by the time you get it, your spouse/fiancee has long received it. It's more relevant to him/her than you. As the petitioner, your responsibilities are very limited (unless, of course, you are taking charge of the process and directing your spouse/fiancee, which I did, to make sure everything gets done correctly and on a timely basis; in that case, you probably already got copies of the packets from someone on the baord).

Mike

The mail system in Colombia is definitely not as reliable when it's outside the big cities. If we eventually get the letters, could you imagine the time wasted (3-4 weeks). Thank goodness for the shortcut and the tips we learned from this forum.

FYI - When I was in Curacao, I mailed a postcard addressed to my sister in California. I returned to the US, went back again to Curacao, then back to the US in a span of 2 months. She finally received the postcard after 2 1/2 months.

A postcard from Cali to California, IF you drop it at the postal nacional and certify it, will get to California in 3 weeks.
Official communication from the Bogota Embassy to a residence in the US only took 10 days.

 I don't know why it takes over three weeks from Bogota to Buga, when I could have walked and delivered it myself in less time

Thanks for the clarification Diana.

Lo and behold. I just got home from a week of business trips and I get a nice manila envelope from the embassy in Bogota. It contains the appointment letter and date, Packet 4 instructions plus other related information regarding vaccinations and bank offices.

Is this the norm? The petitioner in the US getting copies/notices of the same information sent to the beneficiary. I don't recall reading this in the forums. Not that I'm complaining, but maybe the process has changed a bit.

What if you make the appointment to pick up the letter a couple of days before the lab tests and medical? That way you can both go pick it up and run the other errands before the interview. All you really need the letter is for those three things, lab, medical and interview.

Another thing is if someone like Lucho for example, can send you a copy of the letter and you can make your own.

Just a thought.

Diana

Diana -
Since I am flying down to Cali on September 1, it's too tight of a schedule. It's also a US holiday on Sep 3, Labor Day which means the embajada will be closed. We've allocated Sep 4, Tuesday for the LAB and medical. Wednesday is for a "just in case" day for anything that might come up.

What do you mean by the letter? The request to get another Packet 4 copy?

Thanks folks for all the suggestions. We have been waiting until yesterday to find out if someone over the phone at the Consular Seccion was going to help us. I was hoping that at least they would direct me to someone that could arrange an appointment to get it picked up, but no such luck. I do remember what Buck and Paola did to get their letter. I just don't want to send my novia on a 9 hour bus trip (one way) to get a letter than can be sent via Servientrega paid upon delivery by the receiver. The other option we have was to have a friend pick it up at the embassy. This is all possible IF we had a window and appointment to pick it up. I know they just won't let anyone walking in without any official business.

Update : 11:51 AM PST -- Faxed sent to the embassy requesting A) Sent to receiver via Servientrega and we will pay upon delivery B) Call her on home number and arrange details C) Someone authorized can pick it up.

We've been calling 315-1566 at the embassy to find out how to get a damn copy of the Packet 4 letter. The person that answers keeps sending us to the automated system saying they no longer answer public inquiries. I spoke English and still no luck. I also told them atleast direct me to another number if I'm reaching the wrong one. All I need is some instructions on how to get Packet 4 appointment letter.

According to recording, it has been April 9 since they stopped answering public inquiries.

Help! How do I proceed in getting a copy of the appointment letter.

I was in Bogota early this month with my novia and she was freezing. She's from Buga en la valle and I've never felt her hands so cold like in Bogota. I'm from the San Francisco area whereby I like the cold weather. We were walking around Parque 93 at night and all I had on was a polo shirt. She had a think jacket complete with a hood and still complained of being cold.

I love the weather here in SFO and the Bay Area. During winter (without snow :P ) it can get very cold down to the low 30's. We have nice weather all year round except during fall when we get a lot of rain and gray days.

I was just down in Buga 3 days ago. It was my 6th time to be with her in Colombia. I will be back again for our interview and I hope that the 7th time I go to see her, I won't be coming back alone to the US. :star:

If you're referring to the I-134 Affidavit of Support, then here is what you will need.

1. Letter from your bank indicating accounts that you have. The information must contained when it was opened, the current balance and the names it is associated with. For my case, Bank of America, the agent called it the "Immigration Leter". My letter contained my accounts, balances and had a statement saying this letter was requested because I was petitioning my fiancee over to the US.

2. Letter from your HR Rep at work (if employed) on a company letterhead, salary, job title, when you joined and if the position is permanent or temporary.

3. Copies of your W-2s or 1040s for the previous year. It is advisable to have more but not neccessary.

Hope this helps.

And Chester... NO, NO, NO... do not get married in Colombia before your fiancée gets here. The whole point of the K1 visa is for the two people to be together faster and get married in US soil. Your other option is to have a "symbolic" ceremony with no legal validity. Ask around to see if a church wedding in Colombia is legal or not, in some places they are, but in others they're not.

Diana

I think I found the answer that I needed. Marriage at a church in Colombia is a legal binding marriage via the church and the government of Colombia. As I interpret that phrase, it invalidates the "approved" K1 if marriage happens prior to US entry.

One other thing to think about in this regard.... Last spring I changed my satellite TV package to include a full slate of Spanish language channels. I thought this would be a good thing. As it turns out, Lorena and the boys spend the whole day - since school hasn't started yet - watching everything in Spanish and only occasional cartoons in English. They are learning nothing! A Colombiana friend that Lorena has made here told her today that this was a BIG mistake and that she needs to start watching nothing but English language programs and movies. If your lady is smart like Lorena is, she'll learn quickly.

Somewhat to my shame for not really helping my new family, I have learned more Spanish in the past 6 weeks than they have learned English - all three put together!!

Charles

I did the opposite :) I ordered HER cable with English channels back in Buga.

Where I live , San Franciso Bay Area, almost 30% speak Spanish. It worries me a little that she might not make the effort since someone is always around speaking Spanish.

While down there we looked at rings and stuff related to getting married. I was trying to find out whether diamonds are cheaper in Colombia versus the US. Wow, was I wrong, they're a lot more expensive.

Anyway, IF I were to plan a church wedding AFTER the K1 visa has been issued, are there any complications to that? Getting married at the iglesia before we leave for the states has become a daily conversation topic now. What do you guys think?

You can get most of the forms from the "guide" section and the embassy web site.

Be sure the boy is identified on the I-129F. You will eventually need to submit an I-130 for him (assuming you are going the K route). You'll see all of that as you review this thread. I went through this with a 10 year old step-daughter, so pay attention to my posts on issues related to that.

good luck.

I-130 for the child? I thought as long as minors are in the I-129F, in the DS-230 they are considered as "one" application. Maybe I misunderstood?

Photocopy of her passport page - optional, right?

As for the Certificado de Migratorio please check the info that Nydia posted. To me it looks like 3 days if you get in Bogota.
Hope this helps.

Hola Chester....

The more photos you can provide the better, especially from different dates/events.
