Not born in Canada but raised in Montreal, Quebec. Lived in the west island most of that time.

Really got fed up with Quebec taxes and politics. mad.gif

Kimbear - I grew up in Pierrefonds! Hillcrest Gardens off of Guien Blvd (spelling - I can't recall!). Dad used to take the train from Beaconsfield into Downtown Montreal every day. It was a great neighbourhood although the forest behind us and the fields down the road from us have all been built on now.

I think we waited about 3 months to register our car and insure it here - I called Geico - Allstate was cheaper for the same coverage.

We are going to go with Allstate once I trans over all my stuff to US....fiance is with them now....and it will only cost $600 for the year to add my car.... but I assume they will only do US registered vehicles?

I had heard that Geico will insure a Canadian car and driver in US, that's why I called them.

I wonder if Allstate will do it? I should call my agent tmrw?

It's also gonna be about 4 months post move before I register in PA...I hope the DMV doesn't give me problems sad.gif lol...

with car insurance in the USA, it can really pay (or save) to phone around and get multiple quotes, the difference can be quite high!

Yes. I agree. It has also been our experience that credit rating also has a significant impact. Geico quoted us the best rate too.

We did have a TD bank U.S. dollar account, which we closed when we moved here. It was handy dandy for checking the exchange rate, just like you guys were talking about, you can just refresh the screen and get up to the minute rates, then decide if you want to transfer it to your Canadian account or U.S. account etc.

Yes, thats what I do and the rates are good. I then just write a US cheque drawn from that account to my bank in the US. All very convenient with no other fees and works very well.

Canadawhen is the good time to transfer CAD to US$
The significant exchange yoyo has been quite a pain especially since I still get Canadian employment income. It's impossible to predict and it's also affected by the current stock market trends and price of oil etc. Typically when the markets slump so does the Canadian $ sad.gif

I can only hope and pray for better days .... like please not 45% as it was in early 2003 sad.gif

If you can, its much better to do the exchange at a Canadian bank though. Get a US$ account with them.

CanadaUS Healthcare going Public
Coming from Quebec, I can say healthcare there sux. Many do not have a family doctor and getting a test .... well you can just wait. My personal experiance in NY so far has been much better, although we are lucky to have insurance. It costs a bit with the co-pays and hopefully we dont ever need anything major .... or worse ... lose insurance. I hope the politicians here can get their act together and stop the fear mongering thats going on .... its so irritating.

Every surrounding state in Texas doesn't have them. NM, OK, LA, AR....none of them have front plates. Looks so much nicer when you cross state lines and see clean front ends. At least Texas has the best window tint laws.

I had to run a plate when I lived in BC too. Well at least I was supposed to. My Texas front plate is hanging up on the wall in the spare bedroom next to my old BC plate. It didn't help that my friends in Alberta would gloat about not having to have a front plate.

Front plates flat out suck.

Ontario has front plates. As far as I can recall, Quebec does not.
Illinois does.

I'm using some Eucerin products that I bought in the US after reading the Skin Type Solution book (got it at our local library). Seriously, I've never read such a good book about skin care. I'm moving from Ottawa, ON to Tulsa, OK. Tulsa is um... interesting. I find it cute that there is a "bail bonds" area of town (perhaps that is normal in the U.S. and I just haven't happened upon it in any of the other cities I've been to?) It also made me giggle when my husband and I ordered sandwiches at some BBQ place, and there was a flyer for the "World's Largest Gun Show" attached to the receipt. It's a VERY different atmosphere than Ottawa. I assume I'll have a hard time adjusting... "why do you all... I'm sorry... "y'all" like guns so much?" "Why don't people wear helmets while riding motorcycles?" "Why do they feel the need to have a billboard for 'Tulsa's #1 Rated Heart Surgery?' How does that even make sense?" "Why did I just get yelled at for accidentally giving the lady a Canadian quarter while purchasing this beverage?" And most importantly... "WHERE THE HELL ARE THE SIDEWALKS?!?"

Montreal is not so different from Boston... yet, I can't believe I was told not to go in certain parts of town blink.gif I'll see by myself how comfortable I get going anywhere and everywhere.

I know the first thing that popped into my head was that they could never do it here because of the crime. Montreal..... not so much. There will definitely be thefts and whatnot, but nowhere near where it will not be economically feasible. Canadians are more environmentally conscious than the Americans.

Bike theft is a big problem in Montreal - however, thieves tend to pick better bikes (resale $$$) or bikes that are easily stolen (no lock, mini lock...) - from what I've seen, it seems a little complicated to destroy the holder to get a not-so-good bike. We'll see... Also, if you don't return the bike, they do charge you $1000 - so you better return it!

Cyclists are taking a shine to Bixi program

26,000 trips taken since launch; About 100 new subscribers join daily

Bixi is rolling along nicely, officials say.

Over 16 days, about 26,000 trips were taken using Bixi, Montreal's new public bike-sharing system, said Bérengère Thériault, spokesperson for Stationnement de Montréal, which manages the Bixi program for the city.

Altogether, Bixi users have cycled more than 185,000 kilometres since the service was launched on May 12.

About 100 new subscribers are joining Bixi daily. So far, 2,200 people have signed up for monthly ($28) or annual ($78) subscriptions, Thériault said. Users can also get one-day subscriptions for $5.

With a subscription in hand, users get 30 minutes of bike use at no extra cost, after which fees apply.

Rates were set to encourage short trips. When they're done, users can drop off the bicycles at any of the city's Bixi stations.

By June 7, the Bixi network is expected to feature 3,000 bikes at 300 stations. As of yesterday, about 800 bikes were in circulation, and 150 stations had been installed.

"We're satisfied with how things are going," Thériault said. "It's something new, a concept people aren't familiar with, so people will have to get used to it."

Bixi will be in service until November.
