Yes, like Sly Wolf says, there are ways to get on the registry without having an unwilling participant. There are a few posts over in OT where the members know people who are on it for relieving themselves in the parking lot after a night at the club.

I really think that part of the law should be changed. It gives people a false sense of the "true sex offenders" in their areas, but more importantly individuals are getting labelled in a very bad way which is not right at all. I assume this happens less in Canada since I beleive the age of consent is 14.

CanadaDid you feel safer in Canada or in the U.S.?
I live in a small town and was very surprised to see the number of sexual offenders on our list. However, I beleive that sometimes how someone gets on that list can be taken too far.

My understanding is (which can vary by state) that if an 18 year old had consensual sex with a 16 year old, you can be potentially listed. I find that is too extreme and unfair in those cases.

if he goes on welfare/unemployment, will that hurt our case?

if what he does is brought up at our interview, i'm afraid they won't like his using an unemployment check to move to the u.s. :\
what should we do?

thanks in advance, guys

If the fiancee is the USC, it can hurt your case since income becomes factor. If it is not the USC then it does not become an issue.

QUOTE (cdn_gewels @ Sep 24 2009, 12:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello fellow Canucks,

I received my packet 3 in the mail yesterday and will get it back out in the next few days. I'm curious to learn a little more about the medical that's required. I'm in Ottawa, so I'm looking at going to Montreal. From the two choices, would anyone recommend one over the other? From my research, I believe that one is less expensive than the other.

Also, when it comes to making the appointment, I know it's best not to make it too soon as the medical results are valid for 1 year, and this will come into play with AOS. If I send off my stuff on Monday, and make my appointment in early November, do you guys think that this will work in my favour for next year? I have my work schedule until mid-November, so I just want to work with what I have for now. From what I've read, it's taking at least 3 months to get an interview, right?

Also, when it comes to making the appointment, is it difficult to get one, or do you find they're pretty open and can schedule you easily on the day that you're available?

Thanks - and I appreciate your input!

Giulia

Getting an apointment was easy ... within 1 week. I went with medisys and all went well.

A fiancee visa and a marriage visa. The fiancee one has a chance of getting through even though we're married, so the lawyer says. If that one hits instead of the marriage visa, the time gets cut way down.

What kind of system attaches your healthcare to a job?? A system that wants to keep you....at your job. In Canada, supplementary insurance is seen as a small perk that you are able to buy if you want to - in the U.S. it's a huge part of the employment system.

The U.S. is a far more work-oriented society than most countries, including Canada. That's not to say Canada or any other nation are full of slackers, but look at how the U.S. operates:

1. No "long weekends."

2. Federal holidays mean squat unless you work for the government or a bank.

3. Two weeks vacation (it's rare you'll find more and sometimes you'll get less).

4. No overtime pay if on salary.

5. Maternity leave is extremely limited.

6. Health care is often acquired at your job.

All of this boils down to the U.S. putting work ahead of every other aspect in life.

This is very true and I think it stinks! When my husband puts in 80 hours a week at the restaurant, I'm often wondering what the hell we are doing with our lives. Every one I work with is pretty much overloaded with work to the point where I'm currently working on weekends to catch up.

I'm not a fan of the work comes before everything thing. I guess I'm more of a European thinker in that way. Especially where we live in the North East, it's work or bust! Everything is about money, who has it, who doesn't, who is living where...it's kinda disgusting actually.

I agree. I have never seen so many people who need to hold down 2 jobs like here in the US. I think America in general has a lot to learn from some of the European countries. There is really a false sense of that "better standard of living".

There is NO mandatory vaccine in Quebec - only a recommended schedule...

But even if it was given to young girls, okay, if the parents wanted it...fair enough. I actually get that. But at 26 when you get a yearly pap and know you don't have HPV? And you are about to get married? laughing.gif It just so wild.

I think that is why they target younger girls, at that age they should not have been active yet (!) --- I am not anti-vaccine, but I'm really happy to be over 26; I would be upset to have to get it or to have to file waivers and extras...
Also, if I was going to sleep around (not my plan, just hypothetical!), I could still get STDs (even HPV, no vaccine is 100%, and this one protects only from a few strains) and infect partners - I don't see how it's relevant to immigration.

If you do not have a record, there is usually no need for a fingerprint-based search (see the reciprocity thingie: http://travel.state....ocity_3531.html ) -- I tried to find some "free" places, my friend works in the SQ and gave me the information about the stations around Montreal, but they are "traffic" SQ stations, not "full service" because municipal services are available - and then I figured that the cost of gas and all, well, it was not worth it... call your local station and ask them how to get a certificate with the Canada wide search - this should get you started... bonne chance tongue.gif

La SourisNot TellingCanada2009-10-22 02:59:00
CanadaPolice Certificate
hmmm, I'm not sure you got the right one...

Here's what you need:
"Police Records
Inside Canada: Applicants who are physically present in Canada should contact their local police service or Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) office regarding criminal record check procedures. Applicants may obtain a certificate of no conviction issued by any Canadian police service so long as it notes that Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using the applicant’s name and date of birth. Applicants should ensure that the search includes all names that they have previously used, including maiden names, prior married names, or names used before Canadian naturalization. (Note: Because records checks based on name and date of birth only are sometimes less thorough than those based on fingerprints, U.S. diplomatic offices reserve the right to request that certain applicants obtain fingerprint-based searches from the RCMP.)" Source: http://travel.state....ocity_3531.html

and the info from the SQ to get it in Quebec:

Coût/Mode de paiement: Des frais sont exigés dans les services de police municipaux.
Ce service est gratuit à la Sûreté du Québec, mais il est offert seulement si aucun service de police municipal n'est présent dans le territoire desservi. (http://www.formulaire.gouv.qc.ca/cgi/affiche_doc.cgi?dossier=5006&table=0#21 )

*** I don't now where you are located, but I did call the SQ stations around Montreal, and none of them where providing this service (since municipal police services were available...) so, I went to my Poste de quartier (SPM) and they refered me to Complexe Guy-Favreau where "Service d'empreintes digitales du Canada" (lower level, 514-285-2246) is located. $40 and one week later I received my (bilingual) certificate at home issued by the Chief of Police of Charlettetown, PEI.

I've also heard about "Les commissionnaires" or something like that, but I have no information about them.

____

Here's what's on mine:

Canadian Police Certificate
For employment, Visa applicants, Foreign Travel/Work Permits

NAME : My full name with all my middle names - Gender - DOB
Addresss: my address

This certifies that a search based on the above name and DOB failed to disclose any such person with a record of criminal conviction in the national repository for criminal records in Canada. Note: Search not confirmed by fingerprints.

I was feeling a little nervous about whether they would accept a translation from a family member who is proficient in both English and French but is not a professional translator...and what it technically means to be "certified" by a competent translator.

So, i called a couple translation places i found online. the first one that got back to me gave a price of $100 for a certified translation and said that 99% of the time having their certification along with the translation is enough for most legal proceedings. To get it Notarized would cost an extra $160 (transportation to the notary plus the notarization). If the translation comes from an officially certified source (i think they send an affidavit) are they going to be sticky on the fact that it needs to be sworn to before a notary? If that's the case I might stick with my parents.

the bills are piling up so high and deep I can't see over them. They should just tell you to expect to budget around $5000 by the time the dust settles. At least that's what I expect it'll be for us.

Wow, this is crazy money. I paid $25 or $30 dollars for the translation of my Copy of an act of Birth and then, I got a few extra copies for $5. In Quebec, $5 is the most they can charge to notarize a document. Where are you located Rod James? I could give you the details of the translator I used... I've worked as a translator myself and for a "form" document (not that much text), I would never pay more than $50.

Same for the Marriage (I did order both the certificate and the copy of an act - I'll have them for future reference) but I sent the copy of an act...

Then, I got the Copy of an Act of Birth translated... the marriage stuff was done in English from the start.

I can't remember who it was, but I read about someone getting an RFE for the "Copy of an Act" a while back; which is not too bad if you have it already, but why not send it from the start and save the hassle...
